I am constantly amazed that you are still a couple. It is a testament to the love you have that you can work on this project without constantly be "at" each other. While I am sure there are some off camera moments, you can't have gotten this far without being able to love your partner. A real life lesson for many. Thank you,
😊ive said it before…my ex and i couldnt move a sofa from one end of the living room to the other without hard feelings😂😂😂. Simon and Gemma are relationship GOALS❤
Guys, I honestly think that those varnish timber beams under the white plywood ceiling look absolutely stunning and it really shows that all the hard work, and proper work that you are doing, is beginning to really show the beautiful side of this old girl. It’s a wee glimpse of the finished product. Pleased you had a reasonable day for a change, you two are so bloody determined, it’s admirable. I think you guys just keep going the way you are.
For your slippery problem, order skateboard. Grit tape, you can buy it in strips and hundred foot rolls, and you can put it down wherever you need to and easier to remove when you need to remove it, finely slip tape
Non-slip adhesive tape, you can buy it at any IKEA, Leroy Merlin, etc... for any surface! It will always leave some kind of residue due to the glue, but cut into strips and spaced across the entire deck, it can do the trick!
Simon and Gemma have shown us that a genuinely shared project binds people together. They were already a couple but Sarinda has glued them even closer. They have shared aspirations and neither will put up with 1/2 measures. Not to mention that both are skilled craftsmen.
I believe that you two represent the best of British ingenuity, tenacity and grit. As an American Colonial that is the Britain that I've always admired.
Simon, Gemma, Do not ever think you need to justify what you are doing or how you are doing it to ANYONE!!! YOU TWO are the team who have successfully come this far and will, I have no doubt go all the way!! So keep on keeping on and we will see you next week!!
All I can say is you two are amazing, I love to watch the work you do. How much you accomplish and how well you work together Thanks for such an entertaining channel
much better response from Gemma than they would have got from me. From me it would have been a "Ya Boo sucks to You' 😝 with maybe a RRRAAAAAASSSSSSPPPPPPPBBBBBBEEEEERRRRRYYYYYY for good measure
Grasshopper is there to ensure you walk the rice paper correctly 😀, though I doubt if you will be old enough to remember David Carradine in Kung Fu. Great channel and a great job in progress. 👍
I have recently found out through wikipedia that some of the HDML's were converted into Seaward Defence Boats after the war. One of these was HMS Dee which was attached to HMS Eaglet, Liverpool RNR at the time based in Salthouse dock along with HMS Mersey, a ton class minesweeper. I spent two weeks out of school as a sea cadet on board HMS Dee during post refit sea trials in Plymouth in 1966 or 7. I have been watching the channel for a few years and wondering if there was a connection between the two types of craft. Keep up the good work..
Once the deck is on the front of the boat should be weather tight. The lacquered beams look stunning against the white paint. You've both done an amazing job so far.
Gemma and Simon, you are shinning at the moment! Those beams are beautiful, and the complicated pieces are fitting very nicely. And, as others are stating so well, it is a pleasure watching your interaction with one another. Good luck with the project!
Temp non slip use sticky mesh for preventing slip on carpets over polished wood flooring. Stays grippy even when wet but just lifts off when finished with it. If it stops sticking you just wash it down to refresh it. Worth a try
Re the slippery Deck, bit of a bonkers idea, but what about pre owned artificial grass? Cheap as chips, run it over the sides and tack batons around the sides to stop wind getting underneath? Not glued down so easy to get off in a couple of years time. You might get stuff growing in it over time, but should be fairly grippy?
I think this episode is my favorite one from you guys! As always, I laughed out loud multiple times, while at the same time being thoroughly impressed with the work you're doing. Well done, team!
OBSERVATION..that old deck is beautifully made. Should make small foldable tables that attach to the walls in the new boat with it or sell squares of it to the public. Thats great project wood. You should have a small glass case or table filled with artifacts from the boat to show how and what it was made of covered in clear epoxy as a story piece to keep inside the boat in the salon when its completed.
What all these experts forget is that this boat was an expendable wartime construction. It was built cheap to do a limited job for a limited period of time. That time has now expired, hence your current work. Tanks, guns, ships and aeroplanes had an expected life of weeks and months. Crews were expected to be lost the aim was to limit these to an acceptable percentage. Wiring improved during the conflict because it gave better fire protection which enhanced the likelihood of crew survival. Crews in all these facilities were expensive to train but small ships, aeroplanes and tanks were cheap. If it is as good as was your OK!
This is so true. And was then botched in the 70s/80s with cheap plywood and crude construction. I fear the wheelhouse is going to compromise the rebuild. Who knows if it’s possible but suggest you jack it up and support on temporary pillars. You can the replace the beams beneath. When done you can decide if the wheelhouse (despite its 2022 roof) is worth keeping.
The problem will be when you insert several hundred screws through the fibreglass to hold your decorative wood deck. There’s bound to be a few which will leak water to rot the ply beneath.
I have loads of used rolls of material backed sandpaper, 150mm wide, 15m long which you could stick to the deck for grip & remove later, let me know if you want any. Doing a great job. Andy
The curved nature of the deck gives it added strength, the fibreglass gives even more, on top of all that with thicker deck ply and future bulk heads you have no worries facing heavy seas braking waves on her decks, not forgetting the finished deck planking, Iam puzzled why anyone would think it’s not enough?
My Friday fix. Totally unmissable, and thank you so much for that view of the beams from below deck, a masterpiece in the making. Those laminated beams bring a dignity back to Sarinda that will be admired for years to come. Just a suggestion, that now, might be a good time to bring out a video, in time lapse, or however you feel might be appropriate, of your progress on Sarinda thus far. Thank you both. And, as always, thanks to all your supporters for making these videos possible. Much appreciated.
And maybe, perhaps at the very end, you could show us some of the really hateful comments you were receiving at the very beginning. Some of them were so nasty that, not surprisingly, they were affecting Simon's mental health. I'm so pleased you've been able to silence all, or nearly all, of those naysayers!
You guys are amazing, can’t believe what you have accomplished. I was sceptical when I first started watching at the beginning videos that you could restore this ship. Wow was I wrong….
Rather than coating the new decking with some kind of non-slip material, have you thought about wearing shoes that are fit for purpose? I have a narrow boat - steel construction, and while there are sections of the roof and deck that are paited with non-slip paint, there are still sections that can be lethal in wet weather. I'm a big fan of footwear made by a company cslled 'Shoes for Crews'. I wouldn't recomend them for use in icy conditions or for walking on snow, but for your fibreglass deck, I think they'd be ideal, and cetainly cheaper than the alternatives. (No, I don't have any connection to this company, nor am I on commission!)
The progress is awesome! Everything is coming ahead step by careful step - it is really showing what a shoddy job was done by the 1980's conversion, both in materials and workmanship - I really hope that some of the "converters" have seen your workmanship and cringe at how their incompetence has been shown up.
Looking a very professional job there Gemma and Simon, your getting good at this now guys ,I love the way you have a laugh while doing the restoration 👍🤣🤣
More glue more better, the bigger the blob the better the job. It's amazing how good it's looking, it feels like you are going so much faster lately maybe the dry days just allow more to be done.
Another great video , you two with what you have learnt in refurbishing your boat , could teach even other people , so dont take any notice of all the so called (they think) experts on TH-cam !!! You both have done an amazing job , I am waiting in anticipation for the day of your first cruise !! Thanks for sharing !!
yep, i think many of us have commented on the passion these two have for the boat, not each other of course, but they are a great team, i think more people should do this, find something to restore and enjoy the journey, the fact that they both ran or still run a business together and enjoy each others company is testiment to a perfect relationship the big plus for me is Gemma, there aren't that many women who can share in mens hobbies, understand it and want to get their hands dirty, use power tools without screaming all the time, having said that, i think being from Liverpool helps, the women are way more resiliant than those from down south, more practicle, and Simon is a very lucky guy, i'm sure come Christmas and Birthday's buying something for Gemma is easy, just more tools, at least do what i used to do, you buy something you need for the boat love you both, great characters, the boat is really starting to come alone, the new sky light is a great addition to the boat looks like the two painted white timbers that run aft-fwd, under the wheelhouse (i guess were either side of the corridore?) don't need replacing as they wern't doing much anyway - i might suggest Simon, where you have you beautiful new forward deck fibre glassed and painted to cover with plastic sheet to prevent the UV destroying it prior to putting the planks down if and when you get that far - excellent work though, should be dead chuffed with yourselves, i am
To rebuild something of this stature is a good test of their relationship. They are a strong couple who bounce of each other in every direction and produce atoms of entertainment. The work is first class and i am sure that the pace is just as enthusiastic in all they do. Bounce on my friends as i will have to paint another SARINDA SOON.
Apart from having to decipher all of the accent, I'm a yank, you seem to just "stumble " through, you produce a stellar end result. Bravo and thank you!
I feel that when it comes to structural integrity, Simon went to the same school of thought did. Our motto is, “if you’re not going to over build a thing, why did you start?”
You never stop to amaze me of what you do. but i cannot wait till the end to find how much it cost and what it will be worth. Well done to bothe of you.
Iam glad you guys decided to cut the deck off,I would of did all the way to wheel house, but understand what you are doing, wish I was there, you guys are doing a great job, keep up the great job.
Gemma / Simon. It’s really getting exciting with new deck beams (gorgeous) installed. And planking too. In the states here is a patio paint that different grits can choose from. Smooth-rough-REALLY ROUGH. IM sure they have that over there.
ok, well done guys, you work so hard, i love your work and so glad i found you when i did, love the history of the boat, what you are doing, amazing, keep up the good work.
I was going to say the beams look stunning and fantastic, but I don't think that covers it. They are a testament to your wood working skills. One in the eye for the nay sayers from the early days. 😍
After watching since when you began the hull structural repair up until now, I hope the deck work is as satisfying for you as it is for us. You two are insanely dedicated to an overwhelming goal. Well done so far! Look forward to watching the rest.
All that preparation on those bows has certainly paid off, I am reading the diary about the boat and can't believe how many men they had on that thing in WW2. The work you are both doing is, as I've said before really important. People need to know what those young men went through', coming off those beaches at Dunkirk and then landing at Normandy. You should both be really proud of what you're achieving, the refurbishment is really, really good. 👍
Woke up this morning, couldnt wait to see the video! That view of Simon pulling up handfuls of rotted deck makes it clear there is nothing to salvage here, total demo was the only way to go. Wonderful work you are doing!❤
They make anti-slip tape that people use on stairs. You could make walkways on the slippery deck and, when ready, peel it off and clean up the residual adhesive. I would buy a small piece of it and test it to see how well it works. Also maybe put some along the outer edge so that if your start sliding, it would stop you before going overboard.
Recommendation for you is to remove all the old wiring and replace with a new wiring system that you have a schematic for. With an 80 year old boat, who know what wiring is redundant, not used, or faulty installation. Save yourselves a lot of headaches in the future. Just want to add it is a joy to watch the pair of you work together. You keep a sense a humor and don't let the work get you down and accept it as a new challenge to overcome. The new decking is looking great.
For the slippery deck you may consider using KiwiGrip non-skid deck coating. I’ve used it on my boat and its easy to apply and once you eventually decide on how to finish the deck you may easily sand it off. Its a great product 👍 41:30
Love your channel as I have said many times however can I thank you for just starting your vlogs without a spoiler section or drawn out repeat of what I am about to watch. Very refreshing and respect you both for it.
You two continue to amaze us watching on the sidelines. The finished product speaks for itself...you are doing a masterful job. Thanks for sharing, and as always, thanks for fitting this fine lady up to once again prowl the oceans!
My heart stopped when the huge lumpy piece of decking almost fell on Gemma. What a feminine woman - beautiful nails and gorgeous hair - doing expert ship wrighting jobs bring adaptable and ingenious in solving difficult ship problems. I also love watching the interplay between two decent adults who have utter respect and consideration for each other😊
I am constantly amazed that you are still a couple. It is a testament to the love you have that you can work on this project without constantly be "at" each other. While I am sure there are some off camera moments, you can't have gotten this far without being able to love your partner. A real life lesson for many. Thank you,
Yup. More cooperation than Sesame Street!
It's called having affairs
😊ive said it before…my ex and i couldnt move a sofa from one end of the living room to the other without hard feelings😂😂😂. Simon and Gemma are relationship GOALS❤
Awesome seeing man and woman together to reach a goal. Communication, compromise, budgeting, cussing, loving… Great job
I second this. As much as I love my wife, it would not be a good idea for us to take on a project like this and still have a good marriage.
Guys, I honestly think that those varnish timber beams under the white plywood ceiling look absolutely stunning and it really shows that all the hard work, and proper work that you are doing, is beginning to really show the beautiful side of this old girl. For your slippery problem, order skateboard. Grit tape, you can buy it in strips and hundred foot rolls, and you can put it down wherever you need to and easier to remove when you need to remove it, finely slip tape
Ikea carries tape meant to go on stairs to stop falls…
Now, that, is a great idea.
Non-slip adhesive tape, you can buy it at any IKEA, Leroy Merlin, etc... for any surface! It will always leave some kind of residue due to the glue, but cut into strips and spaced across the entire deck, it can do the trick!

Some type of couch upfront against the wheelhouse would look and be very functional with the passengers on board.
Simon, Gemma, Do not ever think you need to justify what you are doing or how you are doing it to ANYONE!!! YOU TWO are the team who have successfully come this far and will, I have no doubt go all the way!! So keep on keeping on and we will see you next week!!
Not only is the new deck thicker, it’s not ROTTEN! Yay!! 😎👍
I love how it all fits together after the scribing and cutting.
All I can say is you two are amazing, I love to watch the work you do. How much you accomplish and how well you work together Thanks for such an entertaining channel
Jemma "we're all good" with reference to deck. Translation "mind your own business!" 😊😂 love you guys, and bless your polite responses to naysayers
much better response from Gemma than they would have got from me. From me it would have been a "Ya Boo sucks to You' 😝 with maybe a RRRAAAAAASSSSSSPPPPPPPBBBBBBEEEEERRRRRYYYYYY for good measure
For the slippery deck issue, use self adhesive non-slip rubber tape. Comes in 50mm wide rolls and is available in most chandleries.
Grasshopper is there to ensure you walk the rice paper correctly 😀, though I doubt if you will be old enough to remember David Carradine in Kung Fu.
Great channel and a great job in progress. 👍
Omg that old deck was a mess and the new is divine , bloody good work impressive stuff!!
Ha Ha it's a funny one 😛. My heart almost stop when Simon almost fall off the deck (Aka underwear change 🤣) Cheers from Belgium 🥂

I hadn't heard the verb 'fettling' ever before! I had to look it up. Brilliant word. So many meanings!
Used alot in Suffolk 😂😂👍👍
My mate was a 'Fettler' at a foundry
My mom always used to say I’m going to have to fettle the cooker it’s aky
Once the deck is on the front of the boat should be weather tight.
The lacquered beams look stunning against the white paint.
You've both done an amazing job so far.
At the front maybe but the side decks are still dodgy in places... Unless I missed that one.

What a feminine woman - beautiful nails and gorgeous hair - doing expert ship wrighting jobs bring adaptable and ingenious in solving difficult ship problems. I also love watching the interplay between two decent adults who have utter respect and consideration for each other😊
A day of you two with Guy Martin would be epic! Not sure if much would be done between the brews but would be brilliant viewing!
