So was she an MGB ?
I see the old pictures and there’s no torpedo tubes, so she wasn’t an MTB, or was she ?
I would love to know 🙏🏻.
Also did you know that these were selling for £10 in our docks post WW2. But that was also the price of a house back then, so not as cheap as ppl actually think.
My granddad nearly brought one, but brought the house instead.
Still he did get to thrash about the WASH (North Norfolk) in one and open up the original V12’s they had in them.
Apparently u could hear her coming out of our river Ouse from the Hunstanton cliffs 😂
Not had the time to binge watch all this, but have u already learned it’s a ‘double diamond’ construction ? Just in case u haven’t been made aware yet.
Though I must say u have way more balls the I have to take on suck a mammoth task 😂 best o British ✌️❤️&🍀 too u both 👍

Guys, serious question, when you cut a section out and then comment that it’s a right mess you’ve got yourselves into……. Do you ever then just stop filming, go to the stern of the boat with a pillow in hand and then just yell at the top of your lungs into said pillow all the cuss words you can muster, then remove pillow, give each other a kiss and then start filming and get back to it…… your resolve, patience, perseverance and oneness is bloody awesome, kudos to you both, you certainly are resilient buggers. Mortice and tenon. The hole is the mortice. the tenon is the poky bit. If you want the joint tighter cut down the grain of the tenon then when the joint is assembled drive a wedge into the cut (same way a hammer head is retained on the shaft).

The essence of any restoration really comes down to what you have to do to keep it going - when it's a sea going boat safety is paramount : I applaud the balance you are striking between keeping original pieces and making the boat sea worthy. You are keeping the spirit of the old dear going, and that is most important to its history.

By and by, there's nothing wrong with adding a little shim to fill out a cut that leaves a gap. Just match the grain direction and then glue it to the tenon and you got instant perfection.

So, in the same way that the original builders used cast iron knees to join deck beams to frames, you could do your mortice joints & then supplement them with a stainless steel flat brace that covers the entire joint from one side of the mortice to the other...

Simon and Gemma I’ve followed you from the start and think you are doing a really amazing job of restoring this beautiful historic boat , don’t let the side board critics get to you they’re not worth it. Love your vlogs Best wishes from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I love watching you two work together! It’s very entertaining and relaxing. Relaxing because I don’t have to worry if the boat is going to blow up or sink😅

Now you can say that boat work is definitely in your wheel house... Looks great. Can't be easy to persevere over the years. The end is probably in sight. Well done so far.

It is so satisfying to watch the two of you fix up this grand old boat. Best part of my week is when you post a new video. Good luck with the rest of the build. Very much looking forward to the day when you sail her out for a cruise.

    RESPECT!!
Clear out here in No. California, I could FEEL the temptation to avoid the time and effort to do that beam correctly!! But you did NOT SUCCUMB!!
I have great admiration for the two of you - for taking this job on, and for doing it RIGHT!!

The replacement deck beams look fantastic so much hard work there, certainly put the strength back in to the boat now. Glad to see the old rotten wood coming out thick and fast. The mortise and tenon was a great idea nice work there Simon and Gemma. 👍

So back the workshop to glue up more beams.
Also prop the wheelhouse up good and proper please. I would hate to see anything happen under it you were not expecting. PS great work and video 2x👍

Love the progress! And...click..click..click, pause, smack - ding! Saw works. Just like an old starter motor! 😆

At least once you get further aft you can stand some beams on the exhaust tunnels, screw the uppers to the hull and run some ropes between them for added safety when working above decks... Also, for the stanchions, square aluminium tubes can be inserted, marked at deck level, notched and bent to whatever upright position you like, then welded up. The uppers will all be painted anyway, so they will blend right in. Plus, being hollow, you can run wires up from below without drilling holes in the deck... You can drill and counter-sink holes below the tenons, insert S.S. screws and finish with wood plugs for an almost invisible join... This old retired sailor thinks you both are doing great work! 👍

Please oh please apply glue to the end grain of any timber you are replacing, this is where the deterioration/rot always starts. I would like to think the rebuild is going to last another 100 years. I would love to be there on that glue gun squirting it everywhere !
Really admire your positive approach to this project no matter how difficult the challenges ahead, what a fantastic attitude!

I missed this when it came out on Patreon…sick again w/ fevers and weird dreams so some of it was familiar. This week’s makes more sense though. Love the nails, Gemma, as usual. Neat hearing Simon talking about how he sees the weight distribution and how much material something needs.

Use recessed carriage bolts for the big beam and they can be hidden from each end.
