    i didnt use wraps or gloves for the first 12 years i had my heavy bag(got it when i was 8 years old) i started using wraps and 16oz gloves and sprained my wrist a dozen times in the last two years. Seriously be careful with gloves, they will fuck up your idea of where your hand is in relation to the impact zone and your wrist. Be careful.

    I'm speaking in relative terms. As in the pros do not use the heavy bag as that much of their training. At best the heavy bag is maybe 10-15% of their conditioning. Whereas for the average guy in the gym, the heavy bag might be as much as half of his training...which is too much.

    After watching this video, I think I need to go to a new Boxing gym/class! The class I have been going to has me hitting the heavy bag for almost 30 minutes non-stop...my knuckles, wrist/hands are fried.

    You can throw a bunch of lighter punches at the heavy bag. Some people say this helps pack in the bone or makes it more dense. There are some other videos and guides online on this. There's also knuckle push-ups on the ground.

  • @expertboxing
    @expertboxing  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Check your technique. There's a good chance you're hitting with the last two knuckles instead of the first two knuckles. Aim with your first two knuckles or even the middle knuckle. Make sure your forearm/elbow comes up high for straights and hooks. And of course, a low elbow for uppercuts.

    My hands / knuckles used to hurt for days after training until I did the following: 1. Bought Winning Knuckle Guards to include with my wraps + always wrap my hands 2. Bought the Ring to Cage C17 2.0 16 oz Gloves (Johnny reviewed these) 3. Hit a softer heavy bag and an aqua bag.

    My $30 one from BrainPad was and still is the best mouthguard I ever had. I tried to get a $175 custom one from the dentist but it was terrible. It fit my teeth perfectly but the material was too soft IMO, and the way it was built around the gums caused my mouth to salivate excessively. I would recommend custom mouthguards for other sports but not for boxing. Just my experience.

    hi Johnny, how hard are you supposed to clench your fist? i am having some pain on the palm side of my hands, right on the opposite side of my knuckles, could it be that i am clenching too hard when i make a fist?
    i've been double-wrapping my hands since, and a fatter wad of padding on my palms has helped somewhat in reducing hand pain after practice.

    Johnny, have you heard of any successful fighters not using hand wraps, and not being injury plagued?
    I only know of Gunnar Nelson(UFC) and 2 others I can't recall off hand. I ask because I've been NOT using wraps, starting since age 9 in karate- where they had us hitting everything from heavy bag, trees, concrete walls, and sparring with no hand wraps and only those flimsy red 'street fighter' kickboxing gloves with the open hands...I've only had one significant injury and it only happened because I was drunk and fractured my wrist on a cement pole because I stumbled while punching...
    I know I'm only one case but I believe it's like with horses and leg wraps and horse shoes...if you never start a horse with those things, they don't need them, even at high level racing. My wife has literally worked with said horses

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is one of those questions you should go to a real boxing gym and see for yourself. i recommend common sense. there’s no such thing as “getting used to”. either you want to give your hands extra protection or you don’t. random anecdotal accounts of outliers don’t justify going against common sense. even if you don’t think you need the padding protection, the wraps still help you when landing at bad angles against moving targets (something your stationary objects were not).
      but as with anything, you’re free to do whatever you want with your own hands.

    You have too much focus on tension. 99% of your punching motion is relaxing the entire body to release the body into rotation as fast as possible, while releasing the fist. And then the last 1% is when you apply the tension at impact to add leverage to your speed and connect with a hard impact force.
    What you're doing is the same as all beginners. Too much focus on using tension instead of using relaxation.

    Newer boxers shouldn’t try and hit with max power because it’s too much pressure on your unconditioned wrists they aren’t yet ready to bear all that power. Also the wrist and forearm muscles aren’t strong enough to keep the wrist from bending or you just aren’t keeping it straight after impact. Combine this with lack of proper technique and it’s a perfect recipe for injuries
