It's me. I started many times, making ugly rockets, installing a bunch of mods, but suddenly... I deleted all the mods. I read about real space flights and started a new game. Now I make beautiful and logical rockets. I'll be flying to Minmus soon. I like to send probes and landers first, do non-landing flybys, and then do landing missions. This feels like a realistic approach. But I think the flight to Dune will be different, we will have to send a large expedition combining all operations at once. Of course, I still use saves and fast loading, but as I said, the realistic approach creates an unprecedented level of immersion.
There is actual lore within the game via the anomalies. The duna pyramids broadcasting a signal that can be converted into an image to show some strange stuff. The face on Duna as well. At one point there was a planned 'planet x' type planet that would contain an ancient city. The strange mun archs are actually artificial as well. There is a plethora of bits of lore scattered about.
I think the old lore is something along the lines of "planet X were really intelligent and tested interstellar tech but messed up and launched there planet out of the habitable zone. They sent the obelisks that you can find in game to try carry on there species using DNA but they messed it up and the Kerbals were made. To get to the planet you must explore the kerbol system and find SETS signals (like the one that still exists on duna) that would give you coords to the hidden planet (you cant see it normally on the map)"
