Oscar Peterson, even this many year's after his death, is still the standard I measure all jazz - not just pianists- against. He has a beauty elegance grace in his playing that does not fade with time. He had the ability to improvise but not lose the beauty of the underlying melody. In my mind, he is and was a giant.
He inspires me so much because of how hard he worked to reach the level he did. People will say Art Tatum was better, fine, whatever, but Oscar shows us that we can all strive and reach the heights we choose to if we persist.
Why the crowd didn't immediately rise to give him a roaring standing ovation is beyond me. They obviously didn't know what they were listening too. What an incredible performance, it was timeless. Thank you for sharing.
Chill out, Mr. Peterson. My heart can’t take this much intensity! You were one of the Masters. I am a guitar man, but I will always respect your prowess.
Music lasts forever. Tapes don't. "Convert" them to today formats to not loose that invaluable treasure. The Montreux Jazz festival is doing this for more than 40 years of video and audio. I can't wait to discover such an incredible amount of JAZZ! Thank you for uploading this video.
Quel talent...
There's a great video out there with Andre Previn interviewing him in front of an audience, and that subject comes up. It's funnier in the long version, but basically Oscar was a teenager and starting to get a little cocky, so his dad played him a record by Tatum. At first Oscar wouldn't believe it was only one guy playing. After being convinced, he gave up playing for a month. (I would have given up playing for a year, LOL!)
Oscar Peterson--- I started listening to Oscar back in the early 70's on KKGO JAZZ station out of LA and I always thought there had to be at least three piano players or more. I never had heard anyone play the Jazz Classics with all-time ten finger chords for every note. He played the melody, his style. The rhythm and chords with his left hand. And adorned the song with Ocar Peterson's own claasic style. Is the ultimate Classical Jazz Pianist in the world.
Guitarist Herb Ellis, who played with Oscar for many years, when asked how good he thought Oscar was, said, "I've played with all of them. No one is even close."
To me, jazz is not cheap entertainment (like much of pop music) that is easily discarded once the melody becomes familiar. The greats add so many layers and so much flavor to the music that you can hear something new every time you listen. In other words, enjoying jazz is more educational and takes more effort, which is why I think fewer people really enjoy it.
@@squoocher I'm priiitttyy sure Christoph's comment was meant to be read as 'piano heaven'(i.e.,the music is heavenly),not as 'piano,heaven'(i.e.,the piano itself is heavenly). It goes without saying it's his hands that are used to bring the great sounds out of the piano. After all, no-one uses their toes to play.
Bass player (like other musicians around) has been listening to that Oscar's introduction dozens of times, every time in a different way. But their smiles and surprised eyes were always the same. Unbelievable.
@Daniel...I've just finished listening to Nat Cole, the instrumentalist, not the singer, and I find his piano playing mesmerizing, straightforward and beautiful. Do me a favor? Please listen to Cole's rendition of "I Hear Music," and let me know what you think, okay? I would appreciate it.
Incredible. This is as close to perfection as you can get. So moving and the genius that was OP. Stunning and thanks God we have these memories. He always said he never practiced because his performing was his practice! What a guy!!

I'm so glad now I'm able to understand which scheme he's using when he does his finger runs ! To every musician out there, learn your diminished chords !
LOVE THIS!!! Wow, what a gem. Thank you so much for taping this initially and then posting it!!! :-) And I thought I had most of his appearances on video!
Like Ms. Staples put it was really wonderful of him to visit our planet. Maybe I'll be fortunate to meet him in another world. Him and Armstrong, Bechet, Ellington, Mingus, Montgomery, Jackson, Coltrane, Washington, Gordon, Davis, Getz, Dameron, Brown,Goodman ,Gillespie, Monk, Jones , Garner, Evans, Eldridge, Adderly, Dolphy, Hampton, Hawkins, Hill , Henderson, Kelly, Hubbard, and all the other all-time greats. May they be eternally blessed...
Are you f-in kidding me!!!! This is an amazing artist here! His playing is beyond belief. I've known for a while that he is a great all-time player but this is extraordinary technique. I'm really sorry I never got to see him play live. His music will go on forever, an endless epoch of artistry.
@1965JWP I used to record everything I could on VCR and I was lucky enough to be in front of the TV the night it was on. 27 years? Wow...glad I found it.
There is loaded emotions along with virtuoso techniques in Oscar Peterson is playing. I think this piece that he plays, is one of the best arrangements that I've ever heard .
the dislikes make me feel special i dont know about you ha.we know how good this is dont we?beautiful music from a genius r.i.p.oscar i will listen till the day i die.many thanks.
You get the sense that someone with Oscar's skills is actually reigned in by the limit of only 88 keys
His bosendorfer had 98 for that reason lol
@@pianist554 He could have bought an Australian "Stuart" grand with 101 keys if I remember correctly. And how beautiful they are.

Beautifully said and very accurate. Glad to see so many OP fans here. I've been for decades.
A real titan of music and of all things worth relishing.
musicloverdavid wow
He inspires me so much because of how hard he worked to reach the level he did. People will say Art Tatum was better, fine, whatever, but Oscar shows us that we can all strive and reach the heights we choose to if we persist.
And an absolute gentleman to boot
All I could do is shake my head! Oscar's unreal! One of the greatest pianist to ever walk this earth. Jazz, classical, or otherwise!
IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR JAZZ AND CLASSICAL PIANISTS TO MERGE. IT´S ADIFFERENT WORLD.
bass players reaction to oscar is timeless
Buena Música y muy buen Pianista.
Also happens with Oscar
Peterson had that effect with anyone, but especially musicians and other jazz lovers, am I led to believe
Tears for this great performance.
This should be in our NATIONAL ARCHIVES.......!!!!
John Williams+Oscar Peterson=Perfect ❤🎵
there never was and there will never be a talent like that of Oscar Peterson.
I just love John Williams’ reaction when signalling Oscar back in at 3:12. He’s like ‘oh yeah, that’s perfect playing!’
I’m fairly sure I’ve just witnessed musical perfection.
Wonderful! What more can you say? Tatum, Shearing, Peterson, Garner...Giants! God bless them.
And Evans.
Yes don't forget Billy@timchapman5567
Why the crowd didn't immediately rise to give him a roaring standing ovation is beyond me. They obviously didn't know what they were listening too. What an incredible performance, it was timeless. Thank you for sharing.
SOMETIMES, WHAT A PERFORMANCE IS TOO GOOD, THE AUDIENCE DOESN´T KNOW HOW TO REACT AND THEY JUST SIT THERE STUNNED FOR AWHILE. I HAVE SEEN THIS.
The bass player and drummer exchanging appreciative smiles.
When the string orchestra began to play and John Williams appeared, I felt like I was dreaming. I never imagined they would ever be together.
He's still pure human magic!
Soooo BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Erinnerungen werden wach. Habe O. Peterson in den 50er Jahren bei Jazz at the Philharmonic in Frankfurt erlebt.
He was and remains the god of jazz.. I'm sadly born too late to enjoy Oscar Peterson Alive, and maybe go to one of his concerts..
I can listen to OSCAR PETERSON ALL DAY LONG!!!!

Oscar, my musical hero since 1962, has no equal. To quote Monty Alexander:, "Oscar does no wrong". Thank you for sharing this stellar performance.
I remember reading somewhere that Oscar Peterson, in days past, would weep in frustration when listening to Art Tatum!!! :)
I saw him live and he was just like this - effortless, elegant, unbelievably great.
Unique and beautiful. Oscar Peterson is a genius!!!
Have enjoyed Oscar for many years. And still... wow.
UNICO GENIO !!!

10 powerful fingers All 12 note chords thru out in any key.
Nathan P. !!
The only great Pianist I know that played songs all the WY through with 10 to 12 note chords!
Guitarist Herb Ellis, who played with Oscar for many years, when asked how good he thought Oscar was, said, "I've played with all of them. No one is even close."
I'm always blown away to see that Oscar's videos have not gone viral.
you shouldn't be. jazz has a niche demographic.
and yet, many are fooled by the word 'niche'. that niche audience is big.
Will Raye "niche" and "big" aren't exclusive to each other.

+Todd Wight it's more art then entertainment basically.
I remember seeing this myself,,, at a young age, and just being blown away by this performance. His kind will not come this way again.
You were there, Sam? Wow. You're a lucky man...
Oh man! Is that piano heaven or what?
Nope, his hands are
Can't remember saying that his hands are not a part in the equation of my statement, buddy!
it's explicit in the 'isn't that piano heaven' part. That and the fact you don't reference his hands, buddy...
+Chris Horton Exactly :)

the best pianist who’s ever lived
ASDFGHJKL dfghjhgcgyuigfyuij What about Liszt?
Bass player (like other musicians around) has been listening to that Oscar's introduction dozens of times, every time in a different way. But their smiles and surprised eyes were always the same. Unbelievable.
No, this bass player is a part of Boston Pops and this is probably the first and only time he worked with Oscar. You assuming too much.
Thanks Oscar for this delicious symphonic poem of Jazz !!! Beautiful, Fabulous, and ... Unique !!!
One of the most incredible musicians I've ever listened to, with a super orchestra, conducted by one of the greatest composers 😮
My Favourite of them all 💯❤️
A timeless piece.done by a master and backed by an absolutely exquisite Boston Pops. You can’t improve on perfection. 4:04
Oscar set the "bar" so high... God bless him !
To call him a giant is unappreciating. My favorite jazz pianist of all time. I know jazz music from him ❤️
@Daniel...I've just finished listening to Nat Cole, the instrumentalist, not the singer, and I find his piano playing mesmerizing, straightforward and beautiful. Do me a favor? Please listen to Cole's rendition of "I Hear Music," and let me know what you think, okay? I would appreciate it.

Simply the best.
Absolutely flawless.
I saw this on PBS. It was the first time I had ever heard Oscar. I was an immediate fan.
Probably at the peak of his career, this breathtaking performance toys with Oscar's body and our Souls. With doubt left me spell bound.
Well before his Stroke that's for sure. After his stroke, his left hand was essetially gone.
Can this be real just amazing

1:08 - 1:14 :( felt that in my heart! Peace and love
Simply magnificent...
More of this PLEASE!!
this is my favorite person in the world
Such an epic performance!
This is gorgeous!
The one and only jazz piano GOD. Now he resides in jazz heaven.
What a night that must have been.

I'm so glad now I'm able to understand which scheme he's using when he does his finger runs ! To every musician out there, learn your diminished chords !
I was trying to figure out what he does when his fingers do that, thank you so much!
Gift from GOD..Sadly missed...Loved Oscars voice also ..x
Difficult to tell between his voice and that of Nat King Cole
If ure still here in 2050 … KNOW YOU ARE LOVED ❤
See you then. 😏🤙🏿
(Somebody like this comment during that year. Godspeed, and God bless! 🕊️)
Love Oscar Peterson piano.
Perfect performance by the epitome of of the foremost jazz pianist......
astounding and very humbling. i cannot believe what i'm hearing.
TY billylovesjazz for this wonderful posting.
LOVE THIS!!! Wow, what a gem. Thank you so much for taping this initially and then posting it!!! :-) And I thought I had most of his appearances on video!
It's how perfection sounds,Thank you OP.
Jazz is really the purest form of black culture... It really should be introduced more to young black people...
Bass player was grinning like an idiot and so was I. We'll never see another talent like Peterson or Tatum for that matter.
Only Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock.
Hiromi Uehara
Makoto Ozone !
@salem blackstock hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Cory Hall I saw and heard them both many times. Extraordinary talent.
Like Ms. Staples put it was really wonderful of him to visit our planet. Maybe I'll be fortunate to meet him in another world. Beautiful. The best.
Increible Orquesta
Magical, so engaging!
I love how he uses the same runs in Round Midnight that he played by Monk
This piece makes me feel....... There's no adjective that will allow me to finish that sentence accurately.

00:35
the bass player's like "are you seeing what I'm seeing..."
oscar peterson was one of the greats no question but sometimes his extraordinary technique took over and (IMO) became an end in itself
jim partridge yeah definitely not. He’s playing some of the most beautiful and intriguing melodies throughout all of his “technical” lines.
And so it is here.
A fair comment -- but a forgivable tendency when you have Oscar's level of talent.
Incrible bello❤
Dont forget of the second genius in this clip and that is John Williams.
AMAZING.....
the dislikes make me feel special i dont know about you ha.we know how good this is dont we?beautiful music from a genius r.i.p.oscar i will listen till the day i die.many thanks.

Do it...why not! I remember that night. It was a new Super VHS Tape and VCR, so I rolled it. Everything converged as it needed to be. I was lucky!
-you've written all the things, so I can't write anything, only Thank you Master !
