I am a pianist, with more than 20 years experience. Belive what I say : this guy is not a pianist, he was a real musician. I could play like any classical pianist, I could have won competition. But never, I could reach this level of musicallity. Ciffra, Rubenstein and other pianist are not comparable to Oscar Peterson : he was a real musician
It’s difficult to compare jazz pianists to classical pianists. In technique i could name a few that are superior, like Cziffra, Marc-Andre Hamelin (although he is a very unmusical pianist) or Hoffman, but musically there is no way to compare the two genres. What makes a great jazz musician, would make a mediocre classical musician, and vice versa. However, Peterson is surely still among the greatest pianists to ever live
A composer and arranger. When his father played a record of Art Tatum to him he thought he was 4 hands playing. He decided right there and then what he was going to aim to play as great as Tatum. To deal with become known and to face the racial prejudice in America at that time and he in Toronto. He decided if he was gonna come to America and tour he’s going to have to scare people, have to frighten people with his piano playing, so he would be respected and treated right. And that he did!!
His combination of dynamic single note runs and massive chords has never been matched, because there is feeling in everything. He never sounds like he's gratuitously showing off. Magnificent.
This piece is called “I CAN’T GET STARTED” It was written in 1936 by Vernon Duke (music) and Ira Gershwin (lyrics). An American standard treated with exquisite experience of a lifetime employing every influence and era in jazz. What a masterclass in solo jazz piano this is!! Omnipotent Oscar!! Everything a musician needs to know and hear about mastery of an instrument and pure self expression free and bouyant! My biggest influence and love
At first I thought you were joking about the title then I disagreed with your title, then I realized you were not. I thought you were joking and saying, I can't get started describing how incredible this performance is. I disagreed because I thought your title should be I shouldn't get started trying to play the piano. Then, as I said, I realized that's the name of the song and yes indeed it's a masterclass. Thanks for sharing the name of the song.
Many of the jazz greats, including Oscar, have said that Art Tatum was the greatest of all time. But Oscar has always been my favourite, he played so wonderfully, Nat Cole's influence and Tatum's influence show in Oscar's playing. But he wasn't trying to be anyone. There will never be another. ❤❤❤❤

It is all about the joy of playing, no matter our level, all about the joy of listening. Listening to Oscar P. is always a beautiful heart experience, without comparing to other pianists.
I saw him once in concert. But I was probably too young (18 years old) to fully appreciate his talent. Tickets were $6.00. I saw Joe Pass playing solo. Tickets were $2.00.
I'm wondering how is he able to get all the characters out of his touch tht you mentioned simultaneously is he pressing hard soft just in-between it probably varries
Besides the ability to instantaneously play whatever he was hearing and feeling, often at an extremely high level of technique, somehow he was able to keep it pleasing, happy, not dark, even though his playing was frequently overwhelming. That's why Oscar is my fav
Oscar Peterson is to piano as Tommy Emmanuel is to guitar. Complete and total mastery of the instrument. Technique is transcended, allowing the artist a level of freedom of expression not available to mere mortals still struggling with technical details. Look no further than 4:18 to see what true instrument mastery looks like.
Oscar Peterson was light years ahead of others his style and passion for tickling the ivory’s is World Class Outstanding a real musical genius May he Rest In Peace
When I listen to or watch Oscar I am reminded of the human intelligence and cunning which evolved the building of sophisticated instruments and an evolved musical creativity to reveal the beauty of his talent and our species it’s like everything that is right in our galaxy is right here
Jeezus, I'm a musicians musician, I can play a LOT of instruments really well. God gave me the gift. But, when I watch and listen to this guy... just .. wow. He's a Treasure. I'd love to have been able to get into that guys brain and see how it works. The way he "thinks" about music fascinates me.
I’m an (aspiring) electronic music producer and a DJ. I exist (almost) completely in the world of modern music and yet, I still watch videos of Oscar throwing down on the piano and am completely mesmerized. It’s like that instrument was made for him and he was made for it. The connection he had with the piano was one of the all-time greatest relationships in music.

An all time master craftsman...he is the bar....Jesus Molina, Herbie Hancock, Joey Alexander, Glenn Gibson jr. Corey Henry, Joey Defranciso all are utterly fantastic but Oscar is just a different cat.
Once a great pianist Glenn Gould, said, if Oscar Peterson would play Bach- then I will stop play piano. This is most compliment and respect for this hilarious genius of Peterson, who to compare to most Jazz pianists practiced every day without exception. That feeling when no matter how much you practice, you will never achieve such mastery. This is genius. 👏🏻
Oscar Peterson did “play Bach”. He started off playing classical. Or rather he was classically trained. You can clearly hear this in his accuracy. People forget this. That’s what makes him absolutely unassailable - classical rudiments underpinning his technique plus jazz understanding and creativity.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC, has many hours of Oscar Peterson, which they played when he passed away. There was one piece in particular that floored me. He was playing along in his usual masterful way, but about 3/4 of the way through the piece he just took off! It was unbelievable! How he transformed from merely great into godlike in a second. I'll never forget that as long as I live. He was one of the all-time greats.
