The first time I heard Sarah's voice I immediately became a fan. Her voice is simply addictive. Today I learned that she's a piano player. This is an example of how greatness solidify's itself. I encourage young people to study the greats like Sarah. Greatness is born from Greatness
This is Brussels 1974...and we are now in 2024..fifty years on..and not a single female or male singer to even come close to this Sarah Vaughan rendition of Body and Soul piano and all...the whole shabang!! NOT even close!!!!
I love finding all these new videos resurfacing after so many years. Sarah was a brilliant recording artist, but her live performances truly represent her virtuosity and genuine God given skills as a lyric singer that is unmatched. I'm not challenging "better than" or the "I prefers", but NO ONE is like Sarah Vaughan.
I was tending bar at Carmelos Jazz Club in Los Angeles in tge 70's. when bill berrys big band was, scheduled, Sarah would sit on the corner bar stool drinking o.j. she would join tge band for one song each set to great applause. after hours one night pianist Fred Hersch sat at the piano and Sarah joined him
The voice, the piano, the humour, the audience interaction, the sassyness, everything about the woman is divine. Every time I see one of these posts I cannot take my eyes off her. I have been a music lover all my life (79 years) but am ashamed to admit that by the time I discovered Sarah Vaughan she had already been gone 15-20 years. Thank God for the recordings, the concerts, the videos AND you wonderful people who take the time to share these posts with us.
She is an immortal treasure. I first heard her, I',m now 78, on the hit parade when I was a teenager. She had something special that appeals to us; that's all there is that's important. Most did not appreciate her 60 years ago, but she was entertaining then. It's all about entertainment; she transcended that.
I was totally blown away!! This lady was so masterfully skilled vocally.she definitely knew how to connect with an audience. Her piano is cool too. Really laid-back. I could listen to her all day long!! 4:24
I feel Sarah is the best singer the world has seen to date, with Ella about a half-a-hair's length behind. Moments like this performance remind me why she's the greatest to my ears. And the sense of humor ("shut up" to the pianist holding her mic while she's in mid-song!) is a wonderful bonus.
100% agreed with you, Gary. Perfectly put, “half a hair behind,,” about wonderful Ella. I don’t really hear how anyone could not hold the Divine Sassy just that tiny, but OH-so-soulfully-meaningfully higher, too. - Gratefully, here from Newark, NJ, where we are so proud because it’s her hometown, - VCH. 🙏🏼 SARAH VAUGHAN FOREVER! ☮️ ♥️
@@Magnet12 I don't think that's what happens. She looks directly up at the pianist holding her mic, says "shut up" (in a playful manner) then starts laughing herself. It's only AFTER she says "shut up" that we hear the audience laugh. (This occurs at the three minute point for anyone wanting to check it out.)
Sarah's voice is magnificent. She embraces each note and holds on for dear life, getting the maximum value. She has definitely inspired me as a chanteuse/singer-songwriter.
In her era of reign, she came with the package of humor, talent, musicianship, elegance and class that she navigated her career. Dionne Warwick called her Aunt Sassy. After watching her, I agree. A job well done.
Thanks for this post. Just subscribed to your channel. I was lucky enough to hear her at the national association of jazz educators convention when I was in high school
@Prímabélla Dívína She had another habit possibly worse than smoking that did not help the matter. Regardless her voice was still strong even in her last performances
@@googleuser7454 In the documentary, "The Divine One", someone once asked Sarah Vaughan, "hey, Sass, how you sing so pretty like that?" Her reply, "I drink booze, I smoke cigarettes, and I hang out!"

totally have to agree on that. She is my all time fav. I study her style.
IMHO, Sarah Vaughan is always better LIVE, and her best accompanying herself on the piano!!!

Singing and playing piano like that. The complete musical package. Such a natural talent. And funny too!
To any of today's divas thinking they're the cat's whiskers, this performance will bring you crashing down to earth.

She said shut up because they were laughing at the way she sang that part

This is astonishing. I've only seen her accompany herself on "Once In a While".

Just the range of that voice!! Incredible. One of the great jazz instruments of the 20th century . And oh yes she was a decent piano player too!

So beautiful. She got better with age.
VOCAL technique! INTERPRETATION......musicality, she was a HORN PLAYER.....
She was so incredible!!!
The many lovely artists of that time would have a fit seeing the acts (lyrics, clothing or lack of, etc.) of today.
