This is after his stroke in '93, so because of that and his arthritis, he wasn't even using his left hand a majority of the time. Oscar Peterson with just one hand is much better than any other pianist with 2. May he rest in peace.
Your comment is unfair to the other two in that trio. In that trio, all three of them were geniuses. Now, you can't say this for many other trios but here it is in order and so your comment was incomplete.
He does use his left hand but only for voicings. I remember he used to play all kinds of crazy things with his left hand before, so that means his left hand has worse coordination because of the stroke?
@@adrimstyler I spoke to the bass player on this (Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen) in the early 2000s Pipoliini, in the interval at Ronnie Scott's, where he was playing in a duo setting with Mulgrew Miller). He said that Oscar had unfortunately lost most of his left hand facility after the stroke. That's why he always took a top guitarist on tour with him when he came back, because it just helped fill out the chord voicings and enhanced the soloing capacity within the group. He always loved playing with guitarists anyway (Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis and, of course, Lorne Lofsky here).

That Martin Drew always knew what to say with his drumming and how much to say when he said it. Rest in peace all of them… Oscar, Martin and Niels. Was blessed to see them many times…
Oscar Peterson remains (to me) one of the most entertaining pianists to listen to. His style is unmatched, and it's so lively. I can only listen to so much McCoy or Keith Jarrett or the like, but I absolutely love listening to Oscar. The only other pianist I can think of that I enjoy just as much is Bill Evans

+Pierre S , not a thing rude about vanislefan's comment. This was shortly after Oscar suffered the stroke that, essentially, disabled his left hand. This recording is nothing short of miraculous.
He's amazing! With 2 hands it sounds like 4 hands when he plays! With 1 hands it sounds like 3 hands when he plays! He is tremendous! I wish I was half as good as a one handed Oscar Peterson. RIP, he was the best piano player the World has ever seen.

After seeing Peterson play live at the Hollywood Bowl and how he buried his entire rhythm section right off the stage with only his left hand. Well, you'd be fortunate to even come close to doing with two good hands what he was capable of doing with one. Case closed!

This song was written in 1942 by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon. At first blush, it sounds complimentary and romantic, at least by virtue of its hook phrase. But it is about AN IMPENDING BREAKUP. The verse tells of two lovers parting. The refrain describes the 'other' nights, lovers, songs, seasons, and lips that lie in store, though “There Will Never Be Another You.”
You notice when that left hand is not there but it does not matter, this man was the ultimate for me. Met him once. He was not in the mood for an interview that day, but hey..."He was Oscar"... Was amazing just to be in his presence...
What a talent. Think how much pleasure Oscar gave to so many people. And I remember some great sessions with Martin Drew at the Bull at Barnes with Tony Lee and co.Tony did a great impression of Oscar ,Errol and a few others, any recordings of that?
I agree with enzo 321 and would like to say how this was important pianist in jazz. Oscar with his impeccable technique has established a unique style and striking so that it could differentiate itself from many other geniuses of the same instrument. In the jazz genre has existed perhaps as many musicians of the highest competence than any other genre but of course, in classical music as well.
