Her control is a 10. Her power is a 10+1. It’s rare to find an artist with such mastery that the edges of control is all she has left to earn extra credit.
Hayley Williams is one of my absolute all time favs. She is just… she’s the full package. Undeniable talent, pure charisma, and just an overall magnetizing personality onstage. She’s on my top 5 easily.
If you think about it, what she's doing in the verses is like a mix between rapping and singing, so like many rappers she uses her face and her mouth to articulate the words in the best possible way and be percussive with them. Very interesting analysis as always
@@caitlingillAlso in Misery Business as the verse are so rythemically sung/ spoken and very much on the beat, which definitely adds even more challenge when you try and copy her and sing along.
This is so great! Definitely need to do an analysis of her live vocals singing 'All I Wanted' on Bonnaroo this year which is probably the most vocally demanding song she's ever sung.
Her voice also got slightly raspy in the final chorus. Not sure if it was because of how vocally demanding the song is or if it was a stylistic choice.
Saw her a week after she had a lung infection that forced her to cancel some shows…and she was absolutely mindblowing. During their song crave, she BELTED the most beautiful notes that filled the entire stadium. 1 week after a lung infection!!!!??? I’ve seen paramore live 3 times and every time I’m blown away. Her voice is insane while also dancing like a madwoman the ENTIRE time. Paramore is simply fantastic. On a whole other level.
Honestly, Hayley is at her best right now in 2023. She seems to have really found and grown into her voice and range, and damn near mastered it. She sounds great right now on all there new stuff, especially live.. Really the whole current band are top notch musicians.
The part of “rose colored boy “ where she playfully shouts, “low key! No pressure! Just hang with me in my weather” so fun and playful I can shout it all day in my car
The tiny bit of grit in her voice when she leads back into the last chorus is absolutely perfect as well. Check out the isolated vocals of Brick By Brick and Ain’t it Fun. Absolutely incredible
Also it's just really good and deliberate story telling. Every time she says "you" it's soft and sensitive, it draws you in and adds a personal emotive touch to the word. The "you" she is refereeing to, she loves that person.
please, do more analysis about Hayley's voice!!! it's so hard to find videos like this about her, and I don't know why because she is one of the best singers I've ever seen!
i think that's what makes artists like her a professional. you look at a lot of cover artists on youtube and they got great vocals and editing, but the just lack that "feel" and conviction when performing a song. it's that intangible quality that gives these great pop punk bands the energy and drive that make their music so good
they've done this for most of their life so they're not 'percussionist mains'. playing drums or triangle in high school doesn't make you a percussionist main for the rest of your life, especially if you've done something else musically for much longer than that
Hayley doesnt do any percussion...she has openly stated she cant play any instruments minus piano which she had to force herself to learn for years lmao. you pulled that straight out of your ass. Taylor plays guitar too not percussion
it's insane how incredibly nuanced her vocal talent is, too. she cultivated *her* sound that only *she* can do on a whim. i've always sung along to Paramore's music, for nearly 20 years now, but could never really quite catch the same soul that Hayley puts into her voice. glad to know i'm not talentless, but hayley is just on an entirely different level. i always knew that hayley sounded unique and powerful but never could parse why. one of the greatest of our time, for sure.
She has more of a tremolo than vibrato and it sounds phenomenal. And her note releases are perfect, with slapback and/or reverb I'm sure it sounds fantastic.
Also I'd love to see more female vocalists featured! Kelly Clarkson, Amy Lee, Stevie Nicks, Celine Dion, Lizzo... And maybe it would be cool to hear your thoughts on some folks from non-rock genres and how we can use some pop or classical technique in a more rock genre. (I know you already do everything I'm saying here, but I'd love to see more!) Thanks Chris!
Oh my gosh, this was so exciting to watch and listen to! I loved your breakdown of Haleys voice and this particular song. I have loved Paramore since they began, and enamored with Haley's voice and her performances. Just outstanding. Couldn't take my eyes off her mouth movements, just truly shows so much how she was sculpting those sounds. Don't know another way to express that, but....so happy you did this Chris, TY!
Chris, this was a great analysis of the singing style that Haley brings. Both of my daughters have performed several of Haley's songs with their band. So, I am looking forward to showing them both this great vocal break down. Thank Chris.
Expressiveness also subconsciously manages breath control... can do so consciously, yet it's often some of our first unconscious introductions to throat length breathing control. Hayley's breath control is spectacular. Thanks for the video! Love your energy in descriptions and how you "act the part" for a bit! Grateful to have found your channel!
Just astounding. She literally nailed it in every single aspect in one take. Not one bit of autotune needed here. The chorus, to me, almost sounds like a confession. Like she is exclaiming to the world or the one she loves how she feels, and there is this inherent embarassment and vulnerability and uncomfortability that comes with that, and it really shows in the performance with the vibrato and sighs and breaths. It makes it so endearing and engaging to watch and listen to. Edit: after finishing the video it seems like the climax is this breaking point and after she does it the final chorus is way less embrassed and she attacks it with confidence, giving this sense of character development within the song where she is now not scared to proclaim her love. I wonder if this was all intentional and she wrote the lyrics with the intent to perform them differently on the 3rd chorus, and even if she did was it intentionally to tell this narrative, or is this all just incidental? Either way, im taking notes.
Hayley is such an amazing singer, I went to see paramore a few days ago it was awesome, I'd highly recommend their live performances of let the flames begin from the final riot, and hallelujah from the final riot. For album I'd recommend the song all I wanted. And acoustic I'd recommend decode acoustic and in the morning. Their newest album this is why is like emotional therapy for the millennial generation
She was the first singer whose technique I was absolutely stunned with when they came out with Riot. I knew enough about voice by then to realize she was remarkable. And I was very jealous lol.
man, it’s x2 combo hit - your MJ analysis videos are one of a kind, now Hayley Williams - even a single upload takes it home - but another series is mindblowing, will keep an eye out for what is about to come out next. as of Hayley - she’s a singing machine, it’s really difficult to find a single weak phrase in a shit load of live videos from early 00s up until this point. she’s *disturbingly* consistent in quality
Please check out other Paramore songs! There are so many! And please check out her 2 solo albums! You really hear her vocal prowess on Petals for Armor.
Well, gained a new subscriber! HUGE Paramore fan. I would like to think the percussion thing she does from her voice makes sense because in interviews it's explained they all started out on drums and resonate with that. I would love to hear your analysis of All I Wanted, because when she hits those high notes she has a closed vowel sound into an open one. A lot of people that try to cover it can hit the note but not the right vowel sounds.
She can deliver the song and captivate the listener just by her singing, even without us hearing the track. She sings the whole and such a pushed high range sh*t in just one take and perfect. Instead I have to record even a low-medium voice range song phrase by phrase so I can take breath and get the pitch and the performance consistent 😆 There's loads of recent and daily live videos and NPR Tiny Desk Concerts where she sings perfectly while dancing, having fun like mad, with an explosive stage presence like a female Freddie Mercury, she's so engaging. She's a true artist, not just a singer. You can hear she has a trained technique BUT she never does "vocal gym", she sounds authentic and emotional just like the best, most sensitive and most real non-trained singer, she delivers something beyond just her skills. She can deliver all ranges of emotions, and she "feeds" you the lyrics, she makes you feel them, specially in her beautiful solo albums, whether she sings softly or pushing high, and that's the most difficult "something special" for the ordinary trained singer. That's because she's a real and good person that has been through hard times. Honestly she's now one of the best female singers in rock history.
@@boneless9305 I've checked them out, mostly live, and I'm not sure they're really my bag, but This Is Why sure grabbed me. I'm more Deep Purplish. Heavier progressive rock. Good stuff, though.
