- Oct. 2, 2017 | Lars Gotrich -- Paramore's After Laughter captures the moment between rapture and its comedown, the glitter wiped away, left with skin rubbed raw. It's a record, more than a decade into the band's career, that not only exposes the sparkling pop that's always lit Paramore's songs, but also deals with the ache of growing up and growing apart. When Hayley Williams sings, "Tell my friends I'm coming down / We'll kick it when I hit the ground" from the '80s-tastic jam "Hard Times" at the Tiny Desk, the stark dichotomy is laid bare by the band's stripped-down performance that still packs a small synth and Zac Farro's drum machine into its Afro-pop-flecked textures.
Backed here only by guitarist Taylor York, "26" is Williams' letter to a younger self, to still believe in dreams, knowing its costs. Paramore's quieter songs have never quite shown this depth of understated devastation and determination, and Williams reflects that nuance in a voice that scales the end of the line, "And they say that dreaming is free," with just the slightest trail of regret.
These songs extend After Laughter's themes, racing across the spectrum of hope, with "Fake Happy" as a soaring anthem to expressing your truest self (and calling out those playing pretend). At the Tiny Desk, the shimmering guitars and synths almost become tropical, as if the band's all taken a big swig of Drake's "Passionfruit" and started a lowkey jam among friends.

Her voice has a lot of character, she's adding a lot of colour and choppiness especially in the first song. She's just enjoying herself and that naturally means a performance that's more involved. I never listened to Paramore back in the day, I wasn't a pop-punk kid so I didn't feel the need to check em out. I watched this performance last year, I did a deep-dive, and Hayley/Paramore are one of my favorite musical acts ever. Her solo stuff is amazing, and After Laughter is one of the best albums of all time. Wouldn't have looked into them without this video, thank you for posting.

This video is how I found Paramore, I listened to it three times in a row and have loved Paramore ever since
I think Tell Me How also strikes a chord with sadness, but both 26 and Tell Me How go hand in hand. 26 is about the past onto the present and TMH talks about the present onto the future.
I also really enjoy how that guitar sounds on 26 its like an alternative 90s guitar sound
Maybe it's weird, but the part of Tell Me How that always gets me emotional is the outro: "You don't have to tell me if you ever think of me / I know you see me dancing wildly in the fog of your memory / You don't have to tell me, I can still believe." That very last line is just... heartbreaking.

I stopped listening to paramore after brand new eyes. When this new album came out I ignored it for awhile and finally listened to it about two months ago. They changed a lot, so much that it's a new genre. I love it. It's not riot and that's not a bad thing, it's just different and awesome in its own new way. I can still feel paramore and this is my second favorite album of them (I just fucking love riot man).
26 is in my top 3 absolute favorite songs from them, ahh it's so good!! I'm glad I came back and I'm glad Zac also came back. Now if only Josh got his shit together... lol

I LOVE that they can tailor a performance for any audience or venue. When they perform, its not just a live rendition of a song on the album. Each performance is so unique and special. it really makes me listen closer because i know it's not going to be the song i already know. They are great at putting some special twists on it. True artists!

This sounds unique and full of little surprises and almost spoken wordish at times, really holds my interest.
Every band goes through the phase of evolving music. Paramore, Linkin Park, Fallout Boys and etc. There will be people who don't keep up with time and there will always be supportive fans to match the negativity . When Paramore started out , many wouldn't think they would last. Now the same many are claiming they aren't as good as they were before. Just keep in mind that it's their band(they can do whatever they want) and if you have so much opinion about their sound and how they should act go form a band on your on and good luck with that.

Easily the best female vocalist to ever exist. Without even focusing on her natural ability she is able to use so many vocal tools to make her listeners feel what she feels. For example, in the song "26" she keeps starting the measure low and building high and dropping the note. It feels like you're just being lifted and dropped over and over again... incredible

I’m a huge paramore fan but this is reallllyyyy far from the truth. She has a lot of flaws in her voice, but she uses it perfectly for story telling and the music they make. I absolutely love her voice but she is nowhere near the best female vocalist.

I feel like if you've ever criticized Hayley Williams' vocal abilities (I don't know how but whatever you do you!) this really shuts any perceived weaknesses down. Her megawatt voice has always had bluster, but you here's where she shows off that she also has very precise vocal control. She's not searching for notes, she just spots them and hits them bull's eye, without feeling like she's exerting herself. Everyone who's ever been a serious music knows the adage about how a truly talented musician is the one who can perform slowly and quietly.

Even though the upbeat of the album of After Laughter, the feeling in the songs are there that express more than people would think. It describes depression as a real thing. Exterior is upbeat but deep down inside the lyrics describe the many people that suffers from it. Everything is fine on the outside but inside we have our troubles in regards to many things including self harm.

Uh, no. I think most people who are saying paramore is too pop is because they know paramore to be a ROCK band. As a huge fan of their 2nd and 3rd album, I come to paramore to get my rock music fix, but their recent albums have skewed towards being more pop than rock, which is sort of disappointing. It has nothing to do with her being a girl or whatever you wrote about.

sheepgray08 | Hayley, Taylor, and Zac did a rather long interview with Zane Lowe right around the time After Laughter came out and they go pretty in depth into the album. I'd recommend watching it, but, long story short, Hayley's kind of not okay, and AL is the product of the two worst years of her life. There's also a good interview with Hayley in Fader you can check out.
She has had it rough. She doesn't have to be ok because that's life and things happen. You can clearly tell she is hurting but she is using it to give her music and voice life. As long as she is alive and doing her thing what more could we ask for.
She hasn't been okay for a while now and I might be wrong, but since the divorce she's been even worse. :(

Fall Out Boy has broken my heart. I tried so hard to like their new stuff, and I bop along to some of it, but it has no feeling. I was so worried that Paramore would go the same way with their different sound, but WOW. This album is flawless.

I use to skip 26 because I couldn't really relate to it...until today, I listened to it while driving and I balled my eyes out that song truly cuts deep but at the same time reminds you to never lose hope.
