Superb walkthrough. Love the kick. It sounds unique and not trendy. Holy good god they put a lot into this. Was under a spell when you got to the FM section.
analog drum synths are one of the coolest instruments in electronic music imo, has that "no two hits are the same" vibe as live kits while still being synthesized... oh god, am i really gonna watch an hour long video about a device i already want to own and play.... ya, of course i am... amazing work, subbed
A lovely jam and a nice overview of the Alpha Base! Something you didn't mention that I think is important is: 1) To really grasp the MBrane, remember that its default setting is cup1=0 and cup2=64, not both = 0. This setting gives you no modulation as a starting point. Cup2 is different from cup1 because its 0 value is at 64 setting and you can go negative or positive modulation from there while cup1 only goes positive from 0 to 127. 2) To get predictable results from the FM synth with classic fm principles you should turn off its polyphony (shift+9 -> FMvoi=0). Otherwise you get weird polyphony not from the sum of all operators but from a different operator each time. This applies regardless if you use a midi keyboard or not. Or at least this is how it works on my model? These are two most misunderstood parts of the Alpha Base that I suddenly found much more manageable after applying these tips :-)
Appreciate it!!! I missed a couple of things, but I think I covered most of it. Need to go back and add chapter markers!! And yeah? The resonance is impressively smooth. My quantum sounds like it is about to explode when you turn the resonance up to even 15% lol
I was in a similar boat, but I just opted to get the Mk1. I’m sure it will still sell for a decent price and offset the cost of the Mk2 when it comes out.
Well done. This is is probably the best Jomox AB video I've seen. I've owned mine for a couple years and I absolutely love the sounds. But I've always found the kick and mbrane to be a bit overwhelming in their variety. You described them so simply and clearly, I'm going to revisit tonight. Very helpful! Still, sometimes I just want some simple 909 sounds, and that jomox kick can be hard to tame. It'd be really helpful to have a tutorial on getting those sounds if you are ever so inclined. In any case, thanks! Subbed!
Oh wow! Thank you so much!!! Appreciate the kind words and the sub 🙏 The manual is super helpful, but it took me a couple of read throughs to really get it all. There is a lot packed into this box :)
Thank you!!! Needed to save up for a new camera, some nice lenses, and some quality lights. I don’t like buying cheap stuff, so it took a minute heh :)
Amazing overview! I own Alpha Base already 5 years, but didn’t know about self oscillation possibility. Going to try it for the next session! I tried FM bass, but it sounds not that low as made from MBrane. However, MBraned one has klicks, which you can’t hide, because there’s no attack param for that channel. Btw, you just need to change the channel (and then go back to selected, if needed) in order to exit FX settings mode. Definitely not user-friendly workflow, hope Jürgen will fix it in MK2.
For me, the Mix from the beginning, was very unique and sounding like I'm hover on the dance floor, and this feeling could be hold on for hours and hours with a feeling of brightness and freedom inside my mind. 🎉😊❤Thank you for your video.
Thank you and both!! I picked up a Nikon ZF and a Z30 as well as a 50mm 1.8 and a 20mm 1.8 as well as a little DX zoom lens for the Z30. I also invested in some quality lights from Apurture. Thank you so much for the feedback!!!!
I have Both the Perkons and the alpha base and frankly, I find the Perkons underwhelming compared to the alpha base. The user interface is great for live performance but I’m really not impressed sound wise, after having spent the last 3 months on it. Probably gonna sell it.
Hey Dimund...I noticed you have the Moog, Quantum ,etc, and use them trusty Sony headphones, I tried many others yet nothing is like them Sonys when I spin music. The drum machine sounds nice, and the track is something I can spin 3am in a club. I have seen one of the older machines from them, and then I saw the Soma23. I primarily just use my hardware samplers . I will go have a peek if one of these stores has one to demo. Oh yeah, I like your setup which is the opposite of the mad scientist jumble of cables and gear that's strewn all over the place.
Hey, thank you so much! Yeah, the sonys are great. Super reliable and decent sound, for sure. Super helpful context regarding the track; when I used ti DJ it was much more like 12 AM trap, dubstep, and house. I love dub techno, but I’ve never really been to a club or party where that was the vibe - probably because I never stay up that late lol

Years ago, I had the Jomox Xbase 09 which was supposed to be based on the TR909, certainly soundwise. I even found a very clever electronics engineer who had designed a piggyback board which expanded the soundset. However, I never really got on with this drum machine, it had some quirks when editing/creating rhythms and eventually sold it for a decent price. It was never anything more than a boutique drum machine to me. I guess this latest incarnation from Jomox is a huge step forward though.
It is certainly still quirky, but it really is the best sounding drum machine out there, imo. The new Mk2 version should be a great step up as well, and is supposed to come out in October.
@@dimund agree you made a killer walk through and demo of this amazing drum synth. Now I want one haha. I have a Rytm and bunch of eurorack drum modules but this seems like a great dance machine. I could do sets with this easy. The quirky user interface is the only turnoff. How is support?
@@dimund no problem, yes a couple of the other ones you mentioned I’ve been looking at too but I keep coming back to the Alphabase. Keep up the great videos!
@@dimund agree well done the trick is choosing the Jomox versus Perkons. Both Jomox and Perkons have amazing sound. Love my Elektron for the sequencer and features but Jomox and Perkons have that harder hitting sounds.
Damn... If I was in the market for a drum machine I'd probably save up and grab that. Tho this year I'm clamping down hard on my GAS and being ultra selective on what I buy.
It’s a solid choice!!! Always good to be selective. I have a rule about selling a piece of gear if I’m going to get something else. GAS is real! Don’t let it get you hah
Thank you so much! I have two kind of parallel styles that are super different: one is dance/synth pop with vocals and the other is more like dub techno / minimal / melodic instrumental. I think I’ll need two separate projects to release it all.
I agree on the user interface, it's kept in a "Berlin"-tradition, similar to mfb. The "Swedish" approach is more user friendly, but there seems to be a new, even more intuitive contender now from Belgium called Modor.
True that! It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, logically, but just maybe less intuitive from a behavioral standpoint. Once you get used to it, it is fine, but it can still be a bit of a liability when using it live; I think the Swedish model is definitely geared toward the box being hooked up to a mixer and blasting out a PA with little room for error hah

very interesting. By the way, There are individual outputs for all 8 parts! Beautiful insights from you.💪 I have a Korg Drumlogue. analog, hybrid and digital voices too. But little different 😅
Nothing wrong with using samples!! If I were traveling a lot, I’d just be using samples. At a certain point, I just got tired of scrolling through samples endlessly looking for a kick that worked. Drum design takes a while to get good at, but I find it super rewarding and more fun, which is why I make music in the first place!
Really cool ‘review’ , and I agree about the fact that it is both one of the best Drum machines available- as well as an awesome studio tool - great walkthrough thank you 🙏
Hello wow thank you for this wonderful video!!!! I have three questions for you, please : - is it possible to plug an external synth (my beringher poly d, or lets say your minimoog) into alpha base and then apply alpha base effects on it and hear it with effects in headphone out or main out. - i guess it is impossible to séquence some polyd chords (paraphonic) with alpha base without saving chord samples in the first place, but at least would it even be possible? - how long are the samples you can record ? Thank you and i love this video which i looked entirely and your other jams as well. I love how you shape your kicks mostly. Wow. Also you mélodie progressions are cooool and make dance :)
Thank you for taking the time to watch! 1. No, I don’t believe so. You can sample an external synth and then apply fx to the sample. 2. It has midi out, and I think you could use it as a sequencer, but I just wouldn’t. 3. I don’t recall the sample length. To be honest, I just wouldn’t look at this for the things you are wanting. It’s a great sounding drum machine with a usable sequencer. That’s it. If you want to have something to route audio into, sample, send midi, etc., I would look at an Elektron box like the Octatrack or Syntakt. Hope this helps!!
do you use the onboard sequencer with most instruments or do you like to just sequence everything from another source? I like the idea of using an onboard sequencer of an instrument, and just triggering its sequences form another source, but that doesnt always work out...
Depends on the situation!! I like both, but I think for most people just sending midi will work best; delays between devices are a pain in the ass to deal with. I have an external midi clock that is easy to nudge a midi signal forward or backwards in time for different devices, so it is easy to keep things in sync and in time. You can do this in Ableton, but it’s really inconvenient to set up; you have to access it through the preferences menu. Workflow killer for sure.
@@dimund I also like the modor drum machine. Not many people know about it. Btw, looks like you have the mm26 or mm27 monitors. How do you like those? I ended up getting the microstack45.
Thank you so much! I will definitely pick up the Mk2 when it comes out. My understanding is that the big change is a new display and some more hands-on control, but the fundamental circuitry is staying the same.
You are fantastic doing reviews... the best I've seem this year and I've seem a lot. You should it more often. The content is so great for 1 hour that you can post the full hour and also post the diferent chapter example kick part, hihat Parr, Tom part. . Just like they do it in podcasts. Well keep up the good work girl. You are talented and you good. I'll keep up with your content. Cheers from Angola africa.
Great rundown, super helpful as I've been sniffing the AB out to go alongside my Tanzbar and replace my ARmk2 (don't love the sound either). (Had both an XBase and an Airbase ages ago.... can't beat the sound of the Jomox stuff. Favorite line: "As a beginner, get a Digitakt." 🤣
I have an alpha base and i will say the samples provided do sound phenomenal. I wish he would release another sample pack for download. Not sure how he made them sound so good. Anyways, the overall fidelity of it is pretty impressive and i have yet to hear another drum machine that sounds this good. The kick is incredible and very inspiring. The mbrane doesn’t do much for me. But the analog vca and filters fill the gap. This and a perkons would be more than enough to do an entire show
I was offered one of these as a gift (as a choice between it and several other machines) Still haven't committed. .. So great to see your walk-through of it - but painful to see you searching for the effing conga... 'more is less'?
Thank you! The Sony headphones are great. I primarily just use them for recording. For mixing, I have some sennhesiers that are open back that I really like.
Gotta ask, have you had a play with the Elta Music, Solar 42 Ambient Machine? I'm sooo getting one, they sound amazing, Can't wait to mix it up with an Iridium!! 😮😉
I haven’t… seems like a dope machine. I try to keep my setup pretty focused and don’t turnover a lot of gear. Hopefully I can try it at a synth expo or something
@@dimund Awesome, I'm sure you'll be tempted😁👍🏻. I've not dabbled with one, seen one in the wild, just YT reviews, and I was blown away. Such is the advantage of YT, in fact it was Someone elses review, and yours, that made me certain I wantba Waldorf! 😊😁. BTW, when you drift off into your little 'self indulgent' reveries, I like it😊, It shows the ability of a synths sounds to hook someone in. I mean, who hasn't sat down to do some composition, then got lost down some cosmic rabbit hole by holding down one note, and sitting there vibing out to it for 20 minutes😳😁🤣👍🏻
I used to use the jomox 09 back in the day and I know what you mean by instantly sounding good but I hated programming it not sure if the AlphaBase is much more useable? For me there is nothing the Analog Rytm can't do in the right hands with resampling and sample playback on top of the Analog it´s just incredible Ive had mine for 6 years it takes time to learn but once you do like I say there really is NOTHING it can't do and its also so much more than just a drum machine. If you don't like the resonance so much on the RYTM its easy to tame by just resampling in the machine and taming it however you please. Also how's that Quantum? would love to see more videos on it..
Nice kitchen ! good cuisine too.. if i'de have to choose a new drum machine, i think i'de go for trhe jomox over the electron, had an sps1 ages ago and tried one of those small things they made lately, i just dont get along with them... the vermona sounded like a toy, and i always wanted to try the tempest...
Haha thank you. Yeah, I went through a lot of machines before I found the alpha base. The only other that I think would enjoy might be the soma pulsar 23, but I try to stay away from patch cables
@@dimundnah i wouldnt, those things are for time losers not for people that are after producing something they can perform or record. i'm shure you'll have fun with it but in live situation for techno, i'm not shure. btw, look what the grand priestess uses in the bedroom... th-cam.com/video/B2uo7olxy9o/w-d-xo.html
@@dimund nah your gonna loose your time these things are rabbit holes for bored nerds that dont produce or release. if you are after serious live performing (i mean techno not ambiant, and god knows i love to go to bed with a good ambiant session), it's the kind of unit that wont help you to achieve that. a mono analog is nice when you know it well for one track, and maybe another generator dedicated to kicks, but, and i dont know you it's just a feel, if you are after playing sessions live, presets will help for one theme from another, especially for drums, even if you'll tweek you want thing to work together. soma for one track why not. i have been working on some synth design lately and asked around about topology and controls; well perference are pretty various, but one thing we have come to mark as a must be, is that switches are much more a preformers friend than patch cables... th-cam.com/video/PMaWnyDFWmo/w-d-xo.html
I used to own the JOmox Xbase 09 I switched to Elektron MAchine Drum. I now own the Elektron Oktatrak and Analog rytym mk2. I lkke them for the powerful capabilities but thats just me.
Yes! You can send the filter into self resonation, which essentially produces a sine wave. Pretty common on a lot of synths, but it’s an unusual feature on a drum machine. The DSI Tempest is the only other one that I can I think of that does this, but I’m sure there are more :)
Love my Jomox but that kick is like the oberheim of drum kicks. Sometimes, fitting it in a mix takes work. Using the compressor can work wonders in controlling it
i have the alpha base..im really happy with it..but is difficult for me sync with Ableton..it will be great see a tutorial how did you connect with the daw..thanks
its known ableton bug that it cant send unjittered clock to externals. Atm im installing ableton 12 trial so maybe they fixed it in this new version. If not you can buy erm multiclock or midronome or change daw to bitwig like i did.
I would make a drum rack in Ableton and sequence from there; you won’t have clock issues, or if you really want to use the onboard sequencer, get a midi clock. I use the Multiclock from Floatingpoint Instruments.
Any gear similar to a vermona drm1 in terms of simplicity, knob per function, great build? Doesn’t necessarily have to be a a drum synth but could be a regular synth

Really cool ‘review’ , and I agree about the fact that it is both one of the best Drum machines available- as well as an awesome studio tool - great walkthrough thank you 🙏
Appreciate the feedback and thank you for watching!!
Nice warm rounded sound!
Very cool Sounds. Thank you for the vid.
I will keep my Alpha base 🤙Love that machine 🎉
Thank you for watching!!
Hello wow thank you for this wonderful video!!!! I have three questions for you, please :
- is it possible to plug an external synth (my beringher poly d, or lets say your minimoog) into alpha base and then apply alpha base effects on it and hear it with effects in headphone out or main out.
This helps a lot ! Thank you !
Sounds awesome! I've definitely slept on the Alpha Base.
It’s really, really good
Never come across your channel before, great video, great machine, I'm curious if this is a Mark 1 or 2 alpha base? Subscribed.
Thank you! It’s a Mk1. The Mk2 is not out yet, but I will definitely be trying to pick one up when it is :)
Dimund cooking in the kitchen, mmm tasty Quantec vibes!!! 😉✌️
Thank you ☺️🙏
Your sound is impeccable.
do you use the onboard sequencer with most instruments or do you like to just sequence everything from another source? I like the idea of using an onboard sequencer of an instrument, and just triggering its sequences form another source, but that doesnt always work out...
Depends on the situation!! I like both, but I think for most people just sending midi will work best; delays between devices are a pain in the ass to deal with. I have an external midi clock that is easy to nudge a midi signal forward or backwards in time for different devices, so it is easy to keep things in sync and in time. You can do this in Ableton, but it’s really inconvenient to set up; you have to access it through the preferences menu. Workflow killer for sure.
Very Great! I have the Alpha Base too and I LOVE it also!! Great Tool ❤❤
It’s a special one for sure :)
Great video!! Good to see you again!!!
I had one and sold it... now regretting it. Sounds so good. I have the analog rhythm II and also the Vermona :)
Those are both great too. I miss the elektron sequencer!
@@dimund I also like the modor drum machine. Not many people know about it. Btw, looks like you have the mm26 or mm27 monitors. How do you like those? I ended up getting the microstack45.
@@OryShihor the 26s and yeah they are awesome!! All of Barefoot’s stuff is excellent
Wow..
Evemerything from Jomox is just awesome..
I'm the proud owner of a T-Resonator which probably is my favourite pedal ever..
Was this video inspired by my comment on your last video where I said "You don't see a lot of Jomox out there, Nice!"?
It was!!!!!!!!
Yeah, it’s a great drum machine. The sound always delivers - if not the workflow
@@dimund HAH! You did a great demo. Glad you spoke about its party trick, the mbrane modeling. Cheers.
Very Nice demo! There was an alpha base 2 announced like a year ago. Curious to hear your thoughts about should you get one at one point.
Minimoog -- every kitchen should have one 👍
Sounds great! Maybe my next drum machine. I'm enjoying the Tanzbär at the moment.
Great Video, great sounds. Thank You!
If i use it with midi keyboard do i have then full velocity?
Thank you, and yes!!
This and a perkons would be more than enough to do an entire show
Yeah, the only ones I don’t care for are the instrumental chords. There are a lot of them, and I would have preferred more percussion.
Like to see a diagram of your cvs etc. what is triggering what etc.
(Edit - I think you clarified my main question. Thx)
I was offered one of these as a gift (as a choice between it and several other machines) Still haven't committed. .. So great to see your walk-through of it - but painful to see you searching for the effing conga... 'more is less'?
Groovy beats! How do you like the Sony heaphones? I use the V6 to hear flat- frequently, very similar to those, I believe.
Thank you! The Sony headphones are great. I primarily just use them for recording. For mixing, I have some sennhesiers that are open back that I really like.
I have a similar set up in my living room, just gotta handle them reflections and you're solid
Gotta ask, have you had a play with the Elta Music, Solar 42 Ambient Machine? I'm sooo getting one, they sound amazing, Can't wait to mix it up with an Iridium!! 😮😉
Thats my next purchase. The drone sounds from that thing are just sinister.
@@cjlewis79 yep, it seems, the Everything sounds on that thing are fantastic. 👍🏻
I mean, who hasn't sat down to do some composition, then got lost down some cosmic rabbit hole by holding down one note, and sitting there vibing out to it for 20 minutes😳😁🤣👍🏻
not really in the same vein other than being a drum machine, but what do you think of the erica synths lxr?
I haven’t used it, but the Erica Synths stuff has a pretty distinct sound that isn’t totally my vibe. A little industrial and hard sounding.
used to have a jomox, absolutely loved it. should never have sold it, i miss it.
The Quantum is great! Just put up a video today about it :)
that was very cool... the use of the Minimoog as a stab was fab...
Sounds really nice if you were to record some one shots and make a sample pack out of it i would totally buy that (cuz no money for the actual unit 😭)
Fantastic video thank you
Love your intro and love your style and my hair is chaos.
Thank you ☺️☺️
Nice kitchen ! good cuisine too.. if i'de have to choose a new drum machine, i think i'de go for trhe jomox over the electron, had an sps1 ages ago and tried one of those small things they made lately, i just dont get along with them... the vermona sounded like a toy, and i always wanted to try the tempest...
Gorgeous work
Nice jam! Period!
Thank you ☺️ 🙏
The most feminine studio I’ve seen. She got talent all over her! Great musician, great chef and deammmmm you know 😍
I'm still waiting for the mk2
Thanks for the awesome track 🙏
Thank you for the awesome instrument!!!!! Can’t wait for the Mk2 :)
I used to own the JOmox Xbase 09 I switched to Elektron MAchine Drum. I now own the Elektron Oktatrak and Analog rytym mk2. I lkke them for the powerful capabilities but thats just me.
Electron crushes it when it comes to programming, but I didn’t fall in love with the sound
@@dimundI have never had it crash I must be lucky. I may get the Soma Pulsar 23 next.
Crush not crash! The sequencer is great :)
@@dimundmy bad i misread that :)
Wait… tell me the sub bass that gets unmuted around 40 seconds wasn’t also coming from jomox.
Using the compressor can work wonders in controlling it
Oh interesting!! I’ve not really had that experience, but I also am partial to having drums being absolutely massive in the mix heh
That kick Phat 🥵
Great run though, got mine recently and it does sounds amazing!!
I like to see them bounce!
i have the alpha base..im really happy with it..but is difficult for me sync with Ableton..it will be great see a tutorial how did you connect with the daw..thanks
She's got an ERM multiclock
its known ableton bug that it cant send unjittered clock to externals.
@@Judasz696 thanks a lot 👌👌👌
@@dimund thanks a lot 👌👌👌
She is literally cooking in the kitchen. Great content.
Thank you so much ☺️

Super Cool Person #1 and the intro had be jump'in ;>)
Hah, thanks 🙏☺️
"thuddy" ur so legit!
Hah, thanks :)
Great arguments
Thanks ☺️☺️
Any gear similar to a vermona drm1 in terms of simplicity, knob per function, great build? Doesn’t necessarily have to be a a drum synth but could be a regular synth
I think the new UDO Super Gemini would satisfy that, but I can’t speak to build quality, as I haven’t played one.
@@dimund that would be cool but don’t want to sell my kidney haha
I can see new synth - quantum. Cool). I’ve got iridium keyboard - great synth)
Yes! Planning to do a video on it after I put together some more sounds to showcase :)
I know this song. It’s in Triple D minor
this the best demo of the Alphabase on TH-cam apparently Alphabase II is coming. He said the firmware will be available for Alphabase 1 users Oh how I wish there was an UNDO mode. Ive lost hours worth of programming by accidentally hitting the wrong button. Please Add undo !
Oh wow, thank you!! There are some good ones out there, so I’m flattered :)
damn! girl, nice sound
Thank you!!
Like your sound ❤
Thank you!
Everything including the kitchen sink ❤
this is what you call cooking in the kitchen!!!!👍
