Been in a 3 month rut, and it got pretty bad. I lost my job, i defaulted on a couple bills, but recently I started to feel the motivation to get up again. So right now I’ve started with simply hitting the gym. After a couple days of doing that, I cleaned my apartment room at a time. it’s been a couple weeks now and I’ve really gotten into a grove with these. Headed to a couple potential employers tomorrow to see about getting another job. Fingers crossed that my gradual introduction this time leads to better results. Thank you for the content, this was exactly the motivation and reassurance I needed!

Been in a 6 month rut... I was exercising and reading and writing from home very consistently and still keeping up with hobbies and gaming with friends here and there, then my girlfriend came to visit and I decided to relax while she was there and it put me in that rut and I've been struggling to get out ever since. It's getting to the point where I'll sleep past alarms and get late to work, and I'll be a lot less motivated there too. Today though, I'm going to do the dishes and cook myself a meal.

I've dealt with the same thing. My first job after college was around the 2008 recession. We went from being very busy to having no work. For months, I sat at my desk with nothing to do. Before the recession, I was always motivated. After, I found it very hard to get back to work. At first I had to force myself to work and it felt hard. But, I stayed consistent and it wasn't long before my drive came back. I notice the same thing can happen after taking a vacation.

@@egeniojaramillo9048 No, idiot, you feel bad all of a sudden. Not motivated to do anything, besides eating junkfood, and watching tv shows. Eating junkfood etc, triggers dopamine wich makes you feel good. For example: that bag of cookies you're eating, the reason why you keep eating them while you know you shouldn't isn't only because they are tasty, but also because sugar stimulates the dopamine receptors, releasing dopamine in the brain wich again, makes you feel good.

Rewording my goals has helped me stay on track. Instead of something like “get fit” I used “become more in-tune with my body” followed by ways to do so such as bow flex, skate, dance, etc.
I also labeled my goals as falling under one of four categories: physical health, intellectual health, social health, and spiritual health. This helps me remember to keep balance in all aspects of my life and also not be so hard on myself if I don’t work on all my goals that day. If I can work on at least one goal in each category, I’m making progress.

The "do something" principle is really a great strategy. But the biggest takeaway for me is knowing I'm not alone. Every time I enter a rut I always feel like I'm the only one in the world who can't stay on track. 1. Don’t think. Just do!
    2. Lower your expectations for results. The important thing is just to TRY.
    3. Start small. Break down large tasks into much smaller tasks.
    4. Set a short timer (2-10 minutes) for each task and repeat timer until you have finished said task.
    5. Consistency is key! Find a routine and stick to it.
    6. Be kind to yourself. Reward yourself for completing every task.
    7. Hold yourself accountable when you know you’re not doing your absolute best.

@@realmadamebproductions6202 If you haven't seen it already, search for "Alan Watts on education". He describes exactly what you're talking about, and concludes with (paraphrasing from memory): "But we fooled ourselves the entire way. We thought of life as a pilgrimage, as a quest, with a serious purpose at the end and the thing was to get to that end. But we were wrong all along: it was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing and dance while the music was being played".
And that's a good attitude towards life.
Furthermore, you're not responsible for everything in life. Your first responsibility is to yourself. Treat yourself as you would treat others. Lots of people put their own physical and mental health in second place. While it's commendable that you would take excellent care of a child or a pet, remember that you owe yourself that same level of attention and care.
Your second responsibility is to your loved ones. Be they family, partner, friends or even pets. Take good care of them, and they will take good care of you when you're in need. Even if it's just offering emotional support.
Your last responsibility is to humanity as a whole. Try not to do anything to jeopardise the future of the species or harm society. In concrete terms that would equate to trying not to contribute to the toxic atmosphere in online comments sections, trying to minimise your ecological footprint, that sort of stuff. Now, I'm not the best at all of that either. But it being difficult to follow doesn't invalidate the advice. ;)

as someone who regularly struggles with executive dysfunction, this video is very helpful! i do a couple of these already- the “do something principal” is basically how i get anything done lol. giving yourself extremely easy goals that would be nearly impossible NOT to do is a great way to trick your brain into starting on tasks you put off. (and if you really don’t end up doing anything beyond that easy first goal, at least you got a little done instead of nothing!)
i especially learned from the 2nd and 3rd strategies. i tend to want to ride the high of motivation and end up tiring myself out, putting myself in a brand new rut. even though i know it isn’t working, it’s hard to convince yourself in the moment that taking a bunch of small breaks and rewarding yourself before you’re even that tired is a good idea. hearing someone talk about the logic behind the method is really good for silencing the part of my mind that insists i’m being lazy for not getting everything done in one sitting.
all in all, thanks for the video!

Hey man, aside from a few jokes in the comment section, this is actually a really good video and very good advice. I have been in a rut since I left my job 2 months ago. Idleness definitely plays a part in negative thinking and self-loathing. I have slowly added more and more responsibilities to my daily tasks and am now almost completely up & running again. I tried to do it all in one day and burnt out rather quickly. You are definitely correct, you have to slowly progress and improve, not take it all in at once. We are human and yes, even the strongest of us can and will burn out in life. I used to work in a Psyche Ward and would see men and woman check themselves in not necessarily because they had mental issues per se, but bc they burned out from life and trying to take on so much at once. It was really cool speaking with them bc I realized anyone of us could be in there. It is okay to relax, reboot, and do nothing, some would go as far to say it is rather healthy and healing. This video is exactly what a person needs after the reboot to get up and back going again. Keep up the great work. 👍

I really appreciate your comment and the perspective it brings. When you consider the alternative to taking time to reboot being checking one's self in to a mental healthcare facility to force downtime, it makes it seem much more needful/necessary. That perspective allows me to feel like less of a slug for taking time to rest and reboot. Thank you.

Johnny Five I feel you sir. I worked in a manager position in retail for many years, and although I did not reach a corporate level position, man did I feel the burden and weight of the entire organization. And the commute too was horrific. It seemed like I had zero time nor energy to devote to myself and my wellness. No time to decompress and refocus after the mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion. Our careers play SO MUCH into our wellbeing. If we are stuck w toxic co-workers and in a place where the positive mission statement goes no further than a PR campaign, we will eventually suffer physical and/or mental tribulations. How do I know? Been there. I quit a few jobs, not because I couldn't handle the work, but because it was so taxing to my inner spirit. The careers I get into always place me with negative co-workers and negative superiors. But you know what sir, it's okay. I learned a lot every time, most importantly what I personally and professionally forbid to put up with. Don't be hard on yourself, you did everything that you could do. They didn't appreciate you nor were they worthy of your sacrifices anymore. You removing yourself from such a high position tells me that you understand your self-worth and are willing to sacrifice for your happiness. I think you also learned that although money is good, happiness holds more value. Very admirable sir. Yes, it will take a few months for you to shake off the negative traces of what you just selflessly endured and that's cool. Take the time you need to get that spark back. The Universe, be it God, Destiny, or any other force you may believe in, was directing you to something greater. That role you played, was just that, a role, where you discovered truths about yourself and the unfortunate realities of that particular profession (or corporation). Stay strong, you are not alone man. Millions of people are either suffering through the exact same thing you just went through without standing up for themselves, or like you, they removed themselves from the situation and are re-focusing. That passion that drove you there, will eventually come back with rest. You deserve a breather brother. And there's nothing wrong starting back at the bottom. Something small will cause your inner determination to boil up until you shoot for the stars again. I know you probably feel like a quitter, but brother, you aren't! You are a professional who decided to be brave enough to remove yourself from a situation that was compromising your health. We must remember, your health & well-being should ALWAYS come before your job. Start slow as the video suggested, eat healthy, exercise if possible, and I promise you sir, you will attract the right energy to get you back on your feet. I have been through this a few times, and I always bounce back a better person and a more informed professional. P.S. Much respect for earning and accepting a corporate (salaried) position. Those never come easy and always at a very high price!! Is or was that price worth it?? You will always be a corporate professional sir, you just need to find the right place. Until then, reboot, refocus, then kick-ass!!!

I had this about 5 years ago. I was doing awesome in life. I lost 50 pounds and I did great at school. Then out of nowhere my dog and Grandpa died. A few months after that, my grandma got a stroke and could never walk again. I fell back into gaining weight again and doing very bad at school. At one point I weight over 270 pounds at 180cm... I stayed like this for 4 years and dropped down 2 levels on school. Now FINALLY, I've seen the light and started working out again. Now I lost 30 pounds and I'm doing great at college😁

I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and spend years at a time depressed. I appreciate the author of this video saying it wasn't a replacement for therapy for a doctor but what most people fail to realize is whether or not you take medication this video is a powerful tool for people who are experiencing depression as well. Most people assume it's medication that makes you better but medication is only a tool. Sleep, proper diet, exercise, socializing "a routine"/being productive is what helps you get better and keeps you well. I have been depressed for nearly 4 years and trying to rebuild my life back up but I am having trouble getting out of the "rut" depression leaves you in when it starts lifting and these tips are 100% exactly what I need as I was having trouble figuring out WHY I was so successful last time I was in this position which this video helped me understand. Larissa Pienaar, confusion and pain is not what God wants. That’s what men choose when we disregard or ignore completely Gods words in the Bible. If we read His word (the Bible) he tells us all clearly What His will is. He loves us all and can heal anything but we must turn to Him for that healing. Most people, including me before I was born again, think that we have so much logic that we can argue away God. We’re we there when he created everything? Can man create even one grain of sand from nothing? No. Are we Holy? We aren’t. But The God of creation is holy and righteous and rather than us fighting against him without understanding, we should try to throw off our pride and seek to understand Him. God is so good.

@@missmittens4526 I’m 8 months post baby now and I was in your boat.
      1. Yes hormones play a huge role. Your body is working overdrive every single second of the day to prepare and support this baby inside you. Literally you are living for 2!
      2. Give yourself a break because pregnancy is not easy. Yes it’s a physical change but you change emotionally, mentally and spiritually so try to fuel yourself positively. Take it one day at a time.
      3. Talk to your doctor. Since your body is working hard you have to make sure you are getting enough vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. This changed the game for me. Sleeping 12+ hours is perfectly normal in pregnancy. A lot happens while you are asleep.
I talked to my midwife about all this and she suggested some vitamin supplements. I was already anemic and so the pregnancy was causing an iron deficiency. Once I started incorporating the advised supplements and switching my diet around to support both of us I started having more energy and feeling a little more okay. Trust me it gets better, just give yourself Grace.❤️🙂

Something I do to help myself get into the swing of things at work: I write down a very short "To Do" list. I will put THREE items on it that I KNOW I can do without difficulty. This can be emails, reading a chapter in a book on leadership, or sending a text to my active clients to let them know I'm thinking about them. Then I cross each item off the list as I complete these menial tasks. Once the three items are completed, I write down three more. Because I have ADD, sometimes I need to write down the entire day's list on a separate sheet of paper, before I forget anything. Then I will take out a separate sheet of paper (of my daily planner) and transfer three items at a time from the master sheet. This has been very helpful to me since I have a tendency to become overwhelmed when there are many things to do. And when I feel overwhelmed, my mind becomes cluttered and I can't be as productive as I should be, and it also seems to take more mental energy which leads to premature fatigue.
I hope this helps someone out. For the record, today is February 5th. For those of you who feel as though the ship has already sailed to have a productive year, stop the negative thought process. Before the end of this week, you can write down your yearly goals, and break them down into monthly, weekly, and daily goals. Set yourself up to hit the ground running HARD next Monday. Remember that the goal is never to be as good as somebody else you're envious of. The goal is to be better than you were yesterday. Even if only slightly. You CAN be more patient. You CAN take a 5 minute walk. You CAN call up your parents to thank them for everything, and see if there's anything they need a hand with. You CAN greet your pet with silly talk and a walk when you walk through the door after work. You CAN pick up a book and read 5 pages.
You can do this. I know you can because I have gone through this process myself. It isn't easy and it takes WORK. But remember: Everything is difficult before it becomes easy.
God's blessings on your marriage, relationships, health and business in 2020.

My advice to everyone on how to not get INTO the rut, is something my father taught me. My father has been self employed all alone for more than 20 years, so he needed to be his own motivation in order to work every day and earn money.
My father only gave me one advice. He said: At the end of a day, make sure the start of the next day is as easy as possible.
That means to already know what the next task is for the next day, and solving any problem of getting started, while you’re still riding the momentum of the end of your work day, so that when you come in next day snd motivation is low in the morning, your task is easy and there’s little to think about, you just have to do the thing you prepared for yesterday.
And this advice is very real, it works very well for me also.
Hope this helps you too 👍

Being in a legit, life harming rut is something I had never experienced before until this year. (I’m 32). Nihislm penetrating my every day life, it’s been awful. I completely agree with the first tip in this video. If I do the dishes I’ll often then sweep the floor, and then that will lead to me organizing my art area, which may lead to me painting, and so on. Its crazy how one action can be so important. Granted the hard part is when I’m really depressed and it’s hard to even do that, but you know, baby steps.
