BMW M140i vs Ford Focus RS - Which one should you buy?

  • Little comparison video (if you can call it that) between my M140i and my mates Focus RS 👌
    Very capable car. Valved Scorpion cat-back sounds crazy - shame the microphone doesn't do it justice. Pity the build quality let's it down. I'd consider buying one if the interior was better.
    What do you think about 'em?

    M140i all day for the money IMO. Add a LSD and stage 1 and it’s the best car for under £30k by some margin.

    Personally, I'd go for the RS. Not bothered by snobby comments about it being 'chavvy' or having an inferior interior! You get a fast Ford for the driving experience so on that score I'd go for the RS all day. If I wanted a more refined drive and more creature comforts, I'd go BMW or Audi or VW. But I don't want that, I want the driving experience.

    Great review, having had an RS3, M140 and a RS Focus mk3 the two cars here are just different- I think they are equally as entertaining, the focus grabs more attention and handles fantastic but the M140 is quicker (auto) handles well and can be also entertaining especially in the wet😁 . It’s great when we have so much choice and in my opinion l would choose both of these over an Audi RS3 - they are fast - full stop.

    My last two cars, 19k miles in my RS and 25k miles in my manual M140i. I reached a conclusion similar to yours; to drive just for an hour or two, Focus RS. To own, M140i. PS, tell your mate to lose the wind deflectors, they are tragic 😘

  • @KyTaundry
    @KyTaundry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Coming from a Fiesta background, mk6 first car, then a mk7 ecoboost, then a mk8 ST which I modded the shit out of, the obvious choice was the Focus RS next, but I went with an M240i and couldn't be any happier. That said the RS is a riot to drive when it wants to be, but just doesn't have the character that the 140/240 gives you with that B58/ZF combo. If it's strictly hatchbacks then 140 all day is the best bang for buck, but having driven both the 140 and 240 I've gotta say the 2 series chassis is far better and the rear wheels seem to not direct you off the road as much! That said again, whichever one you choose you're gonna be quicker than 90% of these average joe everyday cars ;). Top video mate proper well made 👌.

    The RS was actually built by German engineers in Germany, so technically.. It's a German Ford.
    If your friend is smart, he'll keep and really look after his RS.. As Ford officially announced that due to incoming manufacturing emissions rules/policys the famous line/brand of RS models has now finally come to an end, and they have zero plans to try and make any other RS cars in the future (That aren't petrol engined at least..), being the last and best RS Ford has made, his Mk3 will very likely be worth a small fortune on the collector/rare car market in a few years time.
    They are already going up in price even with the used car market in a state of covid chaos, when it starts to get on its feet again, I strongly suspect that dealers will quickly start to push the RS into the collectors market and use exclusivity to push the prices up with it.
    If anyone wants to own a RS, now is the time to do it(!)... In five or so years time, most clean exampled RSs will be bought up and locked away in collectors garages as investments, it's rare to see a RS on the roads now... They'll be like unicorns in the future.

    Currently looking at a BMW M135i. I was lucky enough to borrow a 2017 Focus RS. The first week I hated it as was set on race mode. Felt every stone etc on road causing travel sickness even for me driving. Once changed to real world settings it was an amazing to drive. Sometimes you dont realise how quick you have gone into a corner. Luckily the RS has much more confidence in itself than the driver. Launch mode is waste of time. Standard ones could do with a remap as my cupra 280 kills ur off the mark but once the rs hits the corners I've never driven a better handling car. I thought my S3 Quattro was good in corners until I drove the Ford.

    I have a manual RWD M135i and a mk2 Focus ST. Obviously the 135 is faster, but the thing is that it just doesn’t handle like a sports car; the Focus feels so much tauter and more planted - it’s way better to drive on twisty roads, even with FWD. The thing with the 1-series is that the suspension setup is basically the same across all models, they just put a bigger engine in the 135 & 140.

    There is more to the driving experience than big numbers. The RS is the drivers car "a lot more engaging than the 140..." - it's why the Audi RS3 could have a million horsepower and still be inert and dull as shit and a Lotus Elise is magic with a little 1.8. If my last (ordinary) Focus was anything to go by the RS will be rusting away well before it is 10 years old, and a BMW 6 cylinder engine is always going to sound better than a 4 cylinder, so I would take the m140i

    M140i, well I’m biased because that’s what I own! 😂
    My list was similar to yours (minus the Ford which does absolutely nothing for me) and none of them held a candle to the M140o which won because of the B58. The S3 was just to dull inside and out and the Golf R didn’t tickle my funny bits (I preferred the GTI which I thought was a much better looking car).

    Focus RS, with LSD. I live with and by some very nice curves. The RS leaves everyone else behind when we go on drives (when shod with the best summer tires, michelin, continental, etc.) It is not a 1/4 mile vehicle, it is not a straight line racer. That is ok, since I dont have many straights here to open it up. Only thing I hate about it is the seats and the stock springs. Get coilovers. The best part about it is I can still put heat on cars worth twice as much. The look I get from luxury performance drivers as I pass them on the curves is priceless.

      Not sure if you've seen the other video I made with the white RS. 420BHP just about brought it in line with the 140 in regards ro raw straight line speed.
      Plenty of other handling mods which can be done before the LSD to improve the handling, but if you push it hard enough 1WD does let you down and it ultimately needs one if you're a track enthusiast.

    Never thought I'd buy a BM, but got my hands on a dealer M140 for a steal ! My gen 1 Cayman which I had for 8yrs and a gen 1 S3 225 money pit both sold via a trader nearly covered the cost of the 140 . Cayman was collecting dust not being able to drive it so wanted something which gave me practically and some fun ! There's nothing else out there for the money and quality but did have to buy the exhaust actuator bow spring for £6 ! Before the Cayman I had Mazda 3 MPS which the RS had stolen the engine from !Loads of front wheel spin made worse by having a Hypertech flash installed which monstered most cars with its torque . Not as much as the M140 though . I hope my M140 will be a keeper , don't want to mess with it too much . Going on a bit, but what are your guys thoughts on a rear strut brace to keep the back end in check ? Great vids 👍 61 yr old male .

    Well the difference in speed is pretty high. Because the RS's results on a dyno are around 320hp. While a M140i actually pushes 360hp on the dyno. Than substract the drivetrain loss, the focus rs has around 260whp left. The M140i actually has around 305whp. Than add the zf8 and 50kg weight difference and the focus rs stands no chance in a straight line

  • @rocfella
    @rocfella ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If anyone is deciding now I strongly suggest you go for the RS, is the last RS, prices going up, it's something special. with bmw you will be just another bland bmw on the road, so many now on the roads is crazy, and u will lose 80% of the money.

    I bought a 2017 M140i 18 months ago, with 14000 miles on the clock, for exactly 20 grand.
    It's probably worth 18 grand now, but I had a £450 map done and it's 411bhp/576nm and am looking at a 200 cell sports cat (about £900 fitted), which should take it to 460-470bhp and well over 600nm.
    So, for 20 grand I think it's much better value than an RS with ford scene tax. I could still spend another 5 grand on suspension and LSD to get it to handle much better, and it would still not cost as much as the RS.
    I would have something which handles very well, is MUCH faster, and is much better quality inside.

    Being a former MK3 owner I have to agree! Build quality is awful and extremely unreliable. The BMW feels more luxurious and definitely better bang for your money. But you can't beat the way the MK3 drives in the twisty roads. If you can get over how firm, loud and the plasticy build quality the RS is, it's amazing! It's a shame my engine blew up once on the the previous owner and once on the new owner 😅 if it was a car I intended on keeping long term I would have gone for the 140i 💪

    I'd have to pick the Beamer (especially in manual form) A RWD hatch back is a massive achievement, but managing to squeeze a 3.0 inline 6 in it is nothing short of unbelievable. The world will never see anything like it again. Don't get me wrong, the RS is a brilliant car (it was my dream daily until I discovered the BMW M2-not Comp-) but id have a white one personally as it contrasts with all the black plastics brilliantly.
