People know the difference between the reality of the idea of this movie and the fiction of this movie. It’s not even just about “complaining” a lot of people are even making fun of the Karen movie because it’s a meme that they’re trying to make into a thriller, ya know? I didn't really see people attacking him unfairly, just voicing their takes. Him using his platform to listen and then speak about his own thoughts and feelings in turn helps us all understand each other's perspectives better and could lead to some interesting conversations... this is how a community becomes more nuanced and tolerant, listening to each other and taking each others thoughts and feelings seriously

    The writers really did miss the mark by making her cliche serial killer bait, a woman living in the middle of nowhere, leaving her doors open or unlocked, with no way to protect herself. Would've been more psychologically thrilling if she had taken precautions due to her circumstances and still found herself in that situation.

      This right here! That's what I was saying to my friend cause she was livid I didn't like the movie. The movie literally made it seem like her being deaf meant she just was unaware of EVERYTHING. Like a whole murder happened right next to her in big glass doors and she saw nothing or looked up once till he sent her pictures. Like I can't put myself in her shoes because I'm not ignorant to the world around me. If she was an actual person with common sense and regard for her own disability, I think it would've worked better.

    Ok....here's the thing though. A movie can be made emphasizing the experience of a marginalized group, but that doesn't automatically excuse it from criticisms. Look at something like "Get out". It was a movie based largely around the racism exhibited by "I'm not racist I love black people" kinda people, which resonated with black audiences. but it was still a cohesive story, and scary to a broader audience as well.
    I'm a woman that lives alone. I'm terrified of men following me or breaking in. The concept of 'hush' is intriguing as a thriller.....but it's still a bad movie. It's just not good, and no amount of "Well you just aren't viewing it through the correct lens" is gonna save it.

      @l3ulaklak l3looming people who are actually scared of men probably think so because theyve had bad experiences mostly or EXCLUSIVELY with them. If youve been in fearful situations with both men AND women, then you wouldnt single out just men. Also theres hardly anything sexist about that fear if it’s rooted in real experiences, and its not like the statement itself is sexist because OP didnt say men in general were scary, but that they personally are scared of men. Your comment is wack.

    • @exinsomniac6470
      @exinsomniac6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @l3ulaklak l3looming you can easily look up statistics and numbers of instances of violence perpetuated by men towards women. If you don’t believe the numbers then idk what else to tell you. The majority of women can probably tell you some pretty fucked up situations they’ve been in, SPECIFICALLY with men. At this point you’re just being willfully ignorant. No one is saying “all men are bad”, and I don’t fear every man on sight. However I have been assaulted in my own home by a man, and unfortunately that is now a fear I hold. There is no sexism involved.

    As a woman who studies production design (therefore studies the overall design and psychology of a film/theater), the way Dylan watch films is important. Dylan looks at the plot and technicality of a movie NOT the story. It's different. If example Hush was indeed about domestic violence towards women (assuming that the overall design of the film supports that idea), then that's the story. Dylan didn't touched that at all. He literally looked at how some actions/decisions were dumb, how shots could've been made differently, and other technical stuffs. I'm not saying that people are too sensitive. They are all valid. It's just that they're literally watching the film on a different lense.

Take the "strip naked and run at the killer" comment. I, as a woman who is terrified of a home invasion, choked on my drink and laughed so hard at that. Because I'm not an idiot, I KNEW that was a joke and that he did not mean that seriously, nor did I think he was being sexist or anything. It was a joke and I found it hilarious. I've been following his content for years. Since the days he would comment on video clips. The thought that just because you, as woman, felt fine with a joke think it's idiotic for a woman to feel uncomfortable lacks empathy, at best. I always feel uncomfortable with any joke that might involve the thought of using my body for anything because of my trauma. I'm quite sure that that's not exclusive to women, but we have a higher percentege. Imagining to be a blind woman in that situation is worse. Joking about doesn't seem even remotely funny to me. I'm glad your not affected by it. Truly. I sure as hell wish I wasn't. My therapist would be a little bit less richer but what the hell, y'know?
      He has no way of knowing who is watching his videos. Who he is reaching. I'm commenting all the way from Brazil, dude. And there are many people that watch and don't comment at all. They watch this and might even feel like shit for even feeling uncomfortable because a few hundreds of comments said "oh, your an idiot for not getting that this is a joke" because believe me, you're not the first one.
      So I'm super glad that it doesn't affect you.
      But can we all agree that entertainment is usually about colective enjoyment? I know, I know, it's not going to please everybody, but can he ATTEMPT not to tap into people's traumatizing life experiences? And, may I ad, can his audience stop shitting on others when they point out what affected them?
      I don't want to cancel Dylan (btw, I didn't see a single person saying in the original video saying he should be cancelled...so I don't know why some other person commented below about cancel culture wtf), I actually enjoy the vast majority of his content.
      I cackle at his goofiness and he does have a boish humor that is quite unique. But none of these things makes him untouchable or exempt of criticism. No content creator is. None of us are. We all fuck up. Me, you, everybody.
      Having trauma sucks. Hearing jokes about it sucks. Explaining this to people all the time sucks, but someone has to do it and sometimes I don't want to. For real. I'm just so fucking tired. Really really really tired of everyone making such light hearted jokes of our bodies like it's nothing.
      They say it like it's nothing but it doesn't feel like it's nothing when eyes are on you and you're undressed and scared. They don't know shit.

Hearing the jokes Dylan makes gives me a lot of comfort because it brings humor to a scary situation. Watching his horror movie commentaries are my way of watching horror movies without so much horror. Also, I understand how people way not think that these jokes are funny considering this could happen in real life, but people also have to understand that this is fiction and it is made to entertain, not to inform. If he wanted to be serious, he could just watch a documentary. All he’s doing is having fun! There is nothing wrong with that. I completely agree, what was the point into making her deaf if they aren’t going to include that into the film and give us her perspective? I feel the movie could’ve been so much better if they played into that more. A lot of times it feels like they only create characters with disabilities to say they have a character with a disability and get a medal for the bare minimum effort they put into it. Okay, this person can’t hear.. don’t tell me, show me. I want to experience this from their point of view, I want to know what it would really be like to be in their shoes. Hush did a really half assed attempt. “She’s deaf! Look flashing lights bc she can’t hear! See! Look!” I don’t want you to tell me!

      yea they incorporated it so well in the Quiet Place movies, and used the fact that the daughter was deaf as a way to put the audience into the situation. For example, scenes when all audio would cut out to put us in the daughter's shoes and we as the audience experience even greater thrill or horror because we see the oncoming danger while she was completely unaware. I was expecting a similar approach with this film but I don't think it was executed as well.

      I think it’s more so a character that just so happens to be deaf rather then ‘hey look! This character is deaf’. Like I just feel as though it’s not entirely important for her to be deaf, and it’s just something she is. Like when you watch a movie, a character might be gay without ever getting into any romantic situation. They just so happen to be gay. She just so happens to be deaf. I think it normalises it.

    One movie that I think delves into this sort of "female perspective of horror" very well is the Invisible Man movie with Elisabeth Moss. The way it's shot, the way they use sound, everything helps you understand how terrifying the situation is for her character, and it makes you terrified in return. While I definitely think the *premise* for Hush was really fucking scary, the way they did it wasn't as much, so yk... keep up what you're doing, Dylan!

    A common sentiment that I agree with is that a serious subject matter doesn't automatically make a film good. The recent Invisible Man film does a FABULOUS job creating tension and portraying the terror women endure at the hands of abusive men in a way that a broader audience can experience. Plus with some actual shocking moments. As a woman, I didn't feel that Dylan was downplaying women's experiences or finding humor in them in and of themselves.

    @nellie_mae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2453

    I think the critiques Dylan made were all valid. He never claimed that the premise of the movie isn’t scary; he argued that the way scenes were shot and the things we were shown as a viewer reduced the impact. The argument that this is a woman’s worst nightmare are valid with the overall premise, and that’s why Dylan’s argument that the scenes when we as an audience were shown where the killer was even if the protagonist didn’t know. Those scenes would have been much more impactful if we were only shown what she saw, which he emphasized a few times in his video.
    Tl;dr, I didn’t get offended or think he missed the point with any of this. I think he made arguments about ways the movie could have felt more immersive and intense.

If you’re playing COD and you shoot someone or someone kills you, you laugh about it, be it a guy or a girl, doesn’t mean that you’re going to laugh if it was happening for real. Just like we laugh when a girl destroys guys on COD we’re like yeaaaah take thaat - we wouldn’t celebrate if she was killing irl. Being able to differentiate between reality and fiction is sooo important. (No one wondered why the protagonist was so hot, or how she knew how to use a crossbow, or she was able to think about different endings in such a stressful moment… if it were me, a normal ass woman, I wouldn’t know what to do, I wouldn’t be able to use that crossbow and lord, i would be able to run for more than 20 minutes before I dropped dead from exhaustion)

He specifically targeted the way the film was directed and filmed, and stated that the way they showed the killer’s whereabouts all the time took the “ scary thriller” concept out. He was criticizing the film, not women’s fear. You can make a trash movie about racism, sexism or homophobia, but just because it touches on very real and important topics doesn’t make the movie any less trash. As a woman, I found this movie to be boring and lackluster. I didn’t feel any form of fear while watching this movie because it wasn’t presented well. Like Dylan said, they could have leaned more into her disability to create tension. They could have also made a villain/bad guy that had a deeper back story. It gave no indication as to why he was doing what he was doing. I’m not saying I wanted his whole life story, but a bit of reasoning would have been decent. This brings to mind the movie “Don’t Breathe”. I feel like with that movie, you could feel the tension and fear. I get a little annoyed when other people try and speak for ALL women. The “every woman fears men/ scared all the time” argument. Yes, it’s true, I’m not saying it’s not, that woman have a real fear of men. I know that I do sometimes. But the movie itself did not generate that fear or make it come across clearly. It’s not our job as viewers to put ourselves in her position, it’s the director’s, writers’, etc. job. Tbh, as a woman who also has the bridge between fiction and real life, i didnt even think for a minute about the harassing perspective, and i personally found it funny the "run naked towards the murderer" idea. Anyway, i understand that giving it a thought, or picturing myself in that situation would be horrifying and very scary, but i feel strange to find a video where Dylan has to explain himself because people accuses him for being one way or another.

Like not showing where the killer is constantly, and putting us more in her POV where the audience wouldn’t be able to hear anything. I think his critics were ok and his “sexual” jokes were just dumb regular jokes that he always makes and I think if you’re a regular part of his audience then you know that he’s just saying that light heartedly and that it’s almost an inside joke at this point that his commentary videos always have him making stupid sexual jokes because the joke is that he’s immature. I think what people are missing is the fact that yes, for a woman, it may be more terrifying to watch. HOWEVER, it is the movie's job to make the audience, no matter what gender you are, to feel scared, whether its a thriller of a horror. It is not the audience's job to find it in themselves to empathise with a character. I think a good example of this done right is Get Out- obviously the black community experienced the film differently to others, however the majority of viewers agree it was a good horror/thriller because of the quality of the film and the way the movie presents the character.
    In my opinion, as a young woman, this movie was not scary, simply because the quality of the dialogue, the way it was shot, the predictability of the plot did not make me scared. It honestly felt like a student project. Art is subjective. If you have a different opinion, you can have it, but don't tell people to change theirs just to match your own.

      @meganmcintosh6964 3 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Yes! I am a woman too and this movie was not scary at all. The situation is. For sure, it's terrifying. But the film relies on just that; the situation alone being scary. The directing and editing choices didn't really add to the tension at all. Which makes this whole situation a big joke because Dylan was literally critiquing the film for failing to communicate this fear to its audience. It's like he was saying "please film, do a better job explaining this perspective to me" and now everyone is bitching that he "didn't understand her perspective." The way the film is made, the fear relies on people imagining themselves in a similar situation. It does not, however, do a good job of placing the audience in this girl's shoes for the reasons you (and Dylan) listed.

      I personally didn't find it terrifying, and at no point did it make me empathize with the fears presented, because I have many fears I can relate to as a woman. If someone else had a different experience, well, we are all different, and we all have different triggers and worries. The one that I did find terrifying and thought many men wouldn't be able to see, was Roman Sionis in Birds of Prey. For one part, is not how a villain is usually portrayed in super hero movies, so it's hard to take people away from that expectation. But the whole psychotic entitled way he behaves, while at the time having mainly his money and status as his "super power" it's easier for me to relate to. When he starts to force that girl to strip, while playing it off as a joke, and everyone really going along with it at first, and then when they realize it's actually f-cked up, they do nothing about it due to self-preservation. That I found both relatable and terrifying.

    What people don't realise is, Dylan makes commentary on technical elements. Thinking of Hush, Dylan made comments about using different camera angles, and her deafness. Dylan however doesn't make commentary based on themes or broader social context, that's because that's not what interests Dylan. Dylan doesn't need to analyse his male perspective because, first, the film doesn't really make a commentary on gender issues, but mainly because Dylan isn't interested in making commentary based on Social issues, so there is no need for an analysis of his social position. :)
