Riding 1000km in under 12 Hours

  • Follow along as I attempt to ride 1000KM (or 621 miles in freedom units) in 12 hours on my trusty 2017 Suzuki Vstrom 1000. Hopefully working towards one day achieving the Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000 (or in Australia, 1600 haha).
A little bit different to the adventure riding I do, this was more moto touring but this was definitely one of the hardest rides of my life. I think doing 1000km stretched across a whole day wouldn't be as bad, however trying to fit it in 12 hours made it very hard, especially given the speed limits in Australia being limited to 100-110kph.

Speedo is not accurate, new tyres and gearing have affected the speedometer.

Great video. Got 2 v stroms. A 07 650 I've had for 15 years and 165.000km. And a 2014 dl 1000 now. A second hand bike that I've added 35,000 km to. Pretty easy task where I live. Halfway between the Gawler Ranges national Park, and the Eyre highway on a dirt road. Everywhere is a 500km trip from here. Had issues with both bikes and the chain guards. Vibration of the dirt causes metal fatigue. However, zero issues besides that. 650 is amazing on fuel. 24km/litre at casual cruising gives me 400 plus range. Plenty of power too. But the 1000 is a real weapon. I don't ride that for fuel economy haha. I ride it to enjoy myself. It eats the highway and the traffic with ease. Roadtrains and caravans are no obstacle. I also use the "throttle buddy". A great gadget for cruising. I get to the big smoke regularly (Adelaide) after a 600km ride, the hills and southern regions are my favourite place to indulge in some twisties. I kept the 650 when I upgraded because no one thought it was worth anything, and I couldn’t see the point of giving it away when it's still running like new. I use it for my daily, and the 1000 for the big jobs, and when I want to go two-up. Tyre choice is Metzler tourance. 650 now has shinko 50/50 on it because of the dirt road use. Anyhow, it was great to find your video, and see a different part of the country. Happy trails

Good effort. I appreciate your enthusiasm. Just noticed your video now that I'm a new Vstrom owner. I did a metric Saddlesore (1755kms in 22 hours - certified) in 2021 (the day health restrictions were lifted for us) on a Honda Goldwing. I learned it's all about the planning and mindset, not excess speed. If you fail there's always next time. All the best in your future attempt. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Good vid! In answer to the question, my adv bike is my old XR600r. I got it for just putting around dirt roads but with a big tank and a carry rack it just goes and goes and goes(not very fast mind). Did a big trip up the high country to baptise it through rain, wet tarmac, mud, bogholes, and a legit blizzard and it just ate it up.
    Love it to bits.

Aw man no cruise control sucks. The main difference between you covering 1k and me is, the speed limit. My last years Day 1 trip was 750 miles, a little over 1k-KM, it took me 11 hours’ish. The posted speed limit is 80mph so 85mph is easy without fear of getting pulled over. It was all highway so that helped with time a lot.
Despite the traffic flow issues and was that the chain guard that popped off🤯, you did awesome😎👍. You are still young and will have many more long haul opportunities. Pretty soon you will say , ahh, 1K is nothing 😆 and congrats on 1k subs.

My comfort zone or tolerance threshold to be enjoyable is about 400 miles (650 kms). After that it's monotonous. That big VStrom must have been filled with fuel a few times. Great machines those DL's are. Seen a 1st gen 1000 with over 400k miles it from the UK on YT- original engine. Like the gen 2 such as yours much more. Good job.

    @WomBattle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Great effort. Leaving the pain and fatigue aside it’s actually harder to ride 1000/12 than 1600/24. Your overall average speed (including stops) needs to be 83.3kph rather than 65kph for the ironbutt ride. At the pace you did your 1000/12 you could sleep for 4 hrs in the 1600/24 and still have time to spare. Plan your fuel stops before you leave so you don’t get fuel anxiety and don’t stop too much (or run out). Think about your base layer and outer layer. If it was a stinking hot day Kevlar jeans and cotton jocks would have got wet and sweaty and you’d have ended up with an arse like a baboon. Good luck with the 1600/24, I reckon you’ll do it easily. Then try a Dusty Butt (1610/24 on dirt) on the WR, that is a tough ride! Enjoyed the vid.

Many many years ago in NSW I was droning along at the speed limit on an RD350LC way out in the bush. Bsss, coast, Bsss, coast. It's too slow to burn clean at a steady throttle.
A Highway Patrol passed me going about 10k faster. I figured "his speedo is better than mine", so I pick up the pace and followed him about 3 seconds behind.
He gradually picked up the pace to about 120 indicated.
Mmm nice, now I can hold the throttle steady. Bssssssssssss
After about 5 minutes we passed another bike, who dropped in behind me.
So now there's a police car being chased by two bikes.
So he winds the speed up a bit more. 130, 140, 150. I'm winding the throttle on more and more.
We pass another bike, who drops in behind the train.
      150, 160, I'm at about half throttle.
      160, 170, I'm flat on the tank.
      170, 180, I'm full throttle, flat on the tank. 190, 200
And there we stay, km after km. For about 20 minutes. The bike is absolutely drinking fuel.
I'm starting to worry that I won't make it to the next town.
Finally he gets in the right lane and starts slowing down. 150, 120, 90, 60, 30. None of us pass him.
He turns into a Uturn bay, he's got his whole head out the window, and he's grinning and waving like a mad man.
      We all wave back.
One of the most surreal experiences I've had.

Best I’ve done in a day was 677.1km. That was on my 250 Rally, though. I’d love to have a crack at 1000km in a day on any bike but my 250 😂

Is the 'hardest ride of my life' in the thumbnail just clickbait? cause no way that could be true after watching some of your vic high country adventures. I would think doing 1000km on a lounge chair would be a breeze. Your subs are really taking off, congrats sir.

    I've got a 21 Husky 701, but can't say I ride it much.
A better, or more scenic ride, might have been to go up through Bairnsdale to Omeo then onto the Great Alpine rd and head back towards Melbourne. I've never done the ride myself, but I'm keen to.
