    Plan the ride, then ride the plan. Truer words never spoken.
    My wife and I (two-up) rode our first SaddleSore 1000 and Bun Burner 1500 in mid-June this year, much the same way you did. We knocked out the SS1000 in 18½ hours, got a motel for 6 hours of sleep, then finished out the BB1500 in 35 hours, 18 minutes. Planning all stops along the way (addresses and gas station hours) helped a lot, and minimizing the amount of time at each stop helped more. We brought with us almost all of what we ate and drank, so that helped greatly, as well. It was an experience that we’ll remember for a long time. We received our certification package last week. 👍🏻
    I knew about the Shark Nose 1000, but I didn’t apply for it (we rode a Road Glide Limited). Perhaps I’ll do that on the next one.
    Congrats on your ride accomplishment!

    When I did mine I left at noon. That way I had a good nights sleep, time to get last minute bike walk around inspection done.
    20 years ago signatures were important so I would arrive at the finish noonish so a signature could be had. 1100 miles 17 hours and 4 Jolt Colas!

    Your SS nested in a Bun Burner mirrored my IBA ride in 2018 on my Sportster 1200. Like you, I'm my best company: no radio, no GPS, no comms, just me, the bike and the road. I completed 1600 mi 5 minutes under the 36hrs. Last 800 miles was in rain. Doing IBA rides provides lots of stories. In

    At the Tail end here Bruce! Just caught your IBA 100-1500, well done and welcome to the club! Great job adding in the HB video at 10 mins, nice FF with the video editing and some encouraging music for all of us, i used a stainless water jug and hose from MotoJug for fluids, try it out, my last was an IBA 2000 in 44 hours- MC ride plans always get extended so don’t fret, just don’t run out of gas! See you out there some day! Jim, Long Island, New York

    This is very well done. I especially like how you show not only your high moments, but also the low times of fatigue and uncertainty. Great commentary. I am in the planning stages of my run but haven't yet decided on going the distance or just settling with the saddle sore.

    • @livetourride
      @livetourride  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went into mine thinking that I wanted to get the SaddleSore, and would treat the BunBurner as a stretch goal. Attitude and approach are the cornerstone of your planning. Be clear on your primary objective up front and then work to achieve that. Anything extra is a bonus.

    Great video. A perfect combination of narration, riding, music, etc. I was looking at iron butt videos as I’m planning to do one in the near future. Yours is the fourth video I started to watch. I literally couldn’t watch more than a minute of each of the previous three videos. On a couple of them I couldn’t stand to watch the riders whine and the other video, he just sat at his monitor and spoke. Thanks for posting a very enjoyable, yet informative video!

    • @livetourride
      @livetourride  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. It’s terrific that you are planning it. I hope it goes really well. In retrospect, and knowing now what the section between Spokane and Missoula is like, I would probably do it clockwise too. That’s mainly because I had to ride the leg from Butte to Missoula in the dark for the first time and I would rather ride the Carey-Boise section in the dark. As far as weather is concerned, I deliberately waited until close to Summer solstice so that I could have relatively mild weather across the whole route and I could ride as much in daylight as possible.

      Glad this was helpful. Just bear in mind I had a very narrow window of time during the year to do this specific route. It basically had to be completed between June 1st and June 30th in order to have the longest days for sunlight and the least amount of temperature variation. I was watching the weather very closely and managed to sandwich this in between two heat waves. Smoke is also an issue later in the summer.

      Baie dankie, Pieter. It’s a long time ago that I moved here from South Africa, but I still have strong South African roots. Heck, I was making boerewors a couple weeks ago and we make biltong and droewors at least 4 times a year with American meat including buffalo/Bison. I’d love to have done this ride in South Africa, but 2400km of freeway with a 140km/h speed limit just doesn’t exist. I’d have to ride the N1 from Cape Town to Pietersburg and back to almost Bloemfontein in a day and a half. I don’t know if that’s even possible today.

      Yeah… You’re spot-on about that. The funny thing is that it was only the GoPro time that really wasn’t budgeted. In my prep video (which I am still working on), I talk about how to estimate for the stops and plan them. The scheduled stops were all 20 minute stops and I stuck to that. Lunch was supposed to be in Boise and I gave myself 60 minutes for that. I just messed up the schedule with the unplanned stops. There were 2 budgeted at 10 mins. They ended up consuming a lot more than that.

    • @livetourride
      @livetourride  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was a very big part of my route planning. The entire route was on major highways or interstates where speed limits are high. All my stops were at gas stations just off the freeway. I didn’t plan on any stops other than gas stations and all my food was packed and traveled with me. Ferries and toll lanes where I did not have a pass were excluded from the route. The idea was that I could keep my average speed between 60 and 80 mph the whole way. Also, remember that your trip starts at the time stamped on your receipt at the first gas station and ends at the time on the receipt at the last one. That means any errors on those time stamps (and both of mine had errors) can reduce your travel time. My first one was stamped 2:55am and I only filled up at 3:10 and then had to go inside because the pump didn’t have paper in it. There was someone messing with change in front of me and I lost another 10 minutes. In other words, I left my first gas station 30 minutes after the timestamp. I’m working on the prep video where I’ll talk a lot more about this.

    New to your channel had a question what do you wear for rain gear?

    • @livetourride
      @livetourride  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Garry. I have two different ways of dealing with rain. The riding gear I had on in this ride is fine unless the rain is heavy. Seattle weather is always rainy and I have done a lot of riding here in pretty rainy conditions with what I was wearing there - Harley FXRG jacket and Joe Rocket over pants. I also carry the Harley branded high visibility rain suit that has suspenders and goes down over my boots. The jacket goes over anything else, and the suit is waterproof. I’ve ridden with that in very heavy rain and dense fog.

    Congratulations on achieving the Saddle Sore and the Bun Burner. I agree with everything you talked about. The Saddle Sore 1000 started out to be solo. By the time I started I ended up with 4 others that wanted to go with me. Because of that I almost didn't make the time needed. Each bike has different tanks and mpg. It really slowed me down. I live in Tri-Cities WA. For the Bun Burner 1500 I went to I-90 and into Montana. It got dark on my way back and by the time I got to Missoula it was dark and almost had an accident because it was hard to see the white line and was preparing to make a curve going in the wrong direction. I did make it home in less than 30 hours. I have wanted to do the 48 states in 10 days but when I sit and think about it I think about all of the places that I would like to see along the way and because of the time issue it just is not worth it to me. Then why do the Iron Butt. People asked me the same thing. I tell them it is about me and to test my ability as a rider. I did have fun and I have the certificates to prove that I was able to complete something that I planned and executed. Great video.

      Congrats, Steve! The Northwest is such an incredibly beautiful place to ride that you lose too much by not being able to stop and enjoy it. This summer is all about the day rides.

    Bruce, well done. How did you activate your Gopros, whilst moving at hi speed? Did you stop to turn them off and on? I'm curious as I also am using two action cams . I'm wrestling with even taken them on my next endurance ride! IB style rides are not synonymous with shooting video, for me at least. I really enjoyed your narration. Do you do professional voice overs? If not, you should!

      I can only talk to Hero 9’s and 10’s. They have a record button on top and my gloves have enough tactile feel that I can feel if they have been properly pressed. The two cameras that were mounted on the handlebars were also connected to a USB charger that plugged into the cigarette lighter plug in the fairing. They were continually on charge and as I before I pulled out of a stop, I would start them recording a Timelapse at 30x. The helmet camera did not have continual charge and I have gone through several different mounts on my helmet to get something that really works. What I do now is very different to what it was in June 2021 when I shot this video. My Sena headset provides the voiceover audio to either my GoPro Hero 10 or my DJI Action 2. I am on the fence about which of those two cameras I prefer. The DJI doesn’t crash on me like the H10 does, but it also doesn’t have good amplifier support for my Sena microphone. ChinMounts.com do the best job of producing mounts for modular/full face helmets and I have them installed on all 3 of my helmets, including my Schuberth C3 Pro. Hope that helps.

      @@livetourride Bruce, one of the best answers I've seen. I have a Sena EVO and mic on the left side of my Shoei Neotec. If I understand you correctly I can blue tooth my Sena to my GoPro Hero 9 , rather than run a second mic into my helmet from the GoPro? Or, do you narrate only from the Sena? It's a good camera and mount. Like you, I use a Chin Mount on my one and only helmet! Again, great video. Hope to see you one the road one day.

      @@r12rtpilot Not Bluetooth. I have my Sena headset wired to the input mic jack for the GoPro H9/10 via the GoPro media mod. There is a wire you can get that comes from the back of the headset to the media mod.

    Question
    1 do you have to pre register before the ride?
    2. Are you allowed to go over the speed limit and if so, by how much?

    • @livetourride
      @livetourride  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) No you don’t need to register. Do the ride and then send in the paperwork when you’re done.
      2) No. The IBA highly discourages it and will not certify your ride if they are concerned you violated the law. For my ride, I made sure my average speed for a segment did not exceed the limits.

      @livetourride  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. As I had all the receipts and photographs with geocodes and date and time stamps, I didn’t need any witnesses for the trip. It makes life a lot easier if the IBA can rely on the receipts having an address and a date and time stamp and the geocodes on the photographs match them.
