I got my motorcyclelicense 2 years ago. Bought a new Versys 650 SE GT which gave backpain. Traded it in after 8 months for a new Honda CB650R. Loved that bike but it has highfrequency vibrations which gave me two golferselbows. Beginning of this year I tried a VStrom 1000 and it was an instant fit. No more pains and aches, so bought it. I can easily do 600 km a day with my old body and step off the bike like I rode it for 10 km. Only things I changed for the buffeting were the mirrors and windscreen. Like you I will never get rid of the Vstrom. Love that bike for the riding pleasure, looks I don’t care about.
I've got a 2014 and you nailed it. This was a hard bike to fall in love with... but it's just so damn good! It has never failed me in even the smallest way... totally bulletproof. Its the engine for me... the feel, the torque, the vibe. Its addictive! It rides on rails and puts up with some hard bullshit from me. Its definately got some quirky ergononomics but Im completely used to it now. Great review thanks.
Agree on the stock windscreen, it's about worthless. I went with a Madstad and that cured it completely. If you want an ADV style bike you just can't beat these things for the money, new or used. I put 93,000 miles on a 650 V-Strom which was still running great when I sold it and I'm sure this 1000 I now have will beat that. A 650 or 1000 is just so reliable and all you need.
My down list: 1.Exhaust is whisper quiet 2.Wind buffeting on top of helmet. 3.Occasional 2nd gear pop out after clutchless up shift. 4.Hand guards are not deep enough for long fingers. My up list: 1.Excellent Suspension/Damping 2.Decent Comfort 3.Great Chassis/Handling 4.Good Power 5.Excellent Brakes 6.Excellent intuitive easy to read display. Neutral list: 1.Looks
Like the list - mine no longer gets the buffeting as I have an after market screen. I've never experienced the second pop out. Agree about the lack of exhaust note, although I do find the clutch and mechanicals to be a little off putting. Cheers.
Update to my comments 3 yrs ago. Nothing has changed still riding at 71 and no plans to stop yet. Bike now 22yrs old and sparkling. Ride safe my friends.
My DL1000 2002 (first registered 2004 for some reason) is the best bike i have ever had and been riding it now for 8 yrs. It goes where i want when i want in any weather and never complains. I do all my own mods from hand guards, fog lamps, heated grips and gear selector sensor. I service it as and when required and is as shiny as a new pin. The first time i saw it was in the middle of a long row of bikes, i couldn't see the front of it but for some reason decided there and then that it was for me. Never regretted it. Will say though i do not like the beak on newer versions, the old strom has a singular look. Once you ride one you definitely know what you've been missing. I'm in my late 60's and will probably pass this bike on to my youngest when it gets to heavy for me, thats a long way off yet though. Loved your vid and subscribed.
I agree with your views.... I owned a VStrom 2014.... I don't have it anymore, I traded it for the R1250GS.... Not that I've had a problem with my BMW, but if I need to replace my current bike I'd go back to the VStrom in a heartbeat.
Thanks. Great to hear the honesty from previous strom and current BMW rider. I really like the boxer engine and I see one in my future...whether it be an old R80 - they've always appealed. Cheers.
Very cool video! I happen to not be bothered the least by your 5 dislikes. 1. I like the looks. 2. I love the sound, different to every other bike out there. 3. Not a problem operating the clutch in heavy traffic. 4. The windshield is actually perfect for me. I'm 5'7". 5. Little that the BMW owners knew, we can keep up easily with them on a V-1000. Now on to the 5 things I hate about it: 1. The fuel capacity: This bike is capable and comfortable enough to be ridden for a lot longer than the fuel capacity will allow you to. Too many stops for gas on a long trip. 2. Weight. If this bike was 50 pounds lighter, it would be anyone's dream bike of all time. 3. You have to lift the fuel tank in order to replace the air filter and spark plugs. That adds a lot of labor cost to those services. 4. Dual spark plugs: Each cylinder uses two spark plugs that are also unique and expensive. 5. The mirrors' adjustment system. You need to use tools to do it and it's counter-intuitive. // I realize we both love these, our bikes to death and will never swap them for anything else. No bike is perfect, but this one is a hidden gem. Rock solid. Let it be underrated, so that the price never goes up and other people can enjoy this wonderful machine. 👍🙂
Completely agree with your assessment, I have the same 2014 model in white. I don't mind the clutch. I added a Black Widow exhaust (under $400 CA to my door), makes it sound mean. I currently have Shinko 705s on it and have ridden this bike off pavement extensively on logging roads, ATV and snowmobile trails, no problem! While its no 250lb dirt bike it will certainly surprise you with what it can do. And when you get back to the asphalt its simply outstanding. Great bike, great price, incredible value for money.
Blue Marble Rider! Thanks for a great vid! I own a Vstrom 1050xt and I have to say, I AGREE 100% with you when you say that people who bash VStroms HAVEN'T ridden them. I love my bike. Fortunately for me, I don't have the pesky buffeting issue with my windscreen, I guess I'm about perfect height before it becomes a problem.
I have a first Gen DL1000. I am OK with the looks of mine. The new 1050XT Adventure in Yellow is awesome looking in my eyes. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I have about 10000 miles on mine now. I love the engine and the way it rides however it needs some mods to make it a comfortable ride. It seems like they designed the bike around a 5'8 rider. If you're tall, you'll need a windscreen, tall seat or footpeg lowering kit, bar risers and a nice helmet at the least. In it's stock form, the bike is extremely cramped and gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I didn't really notice this until I got a wr250r and realized how long I could ride it without getting uncomfortable. Vstrom is an awesome road bike, just needs some comfort mods in my opinion.
I have 2006 dL 1000 it’s a great bike but sadly I just totaled it I hit a deer at 70 mph and walked away and a lot to do with it is how the bike is put together and the gear your wearing . I will get another one I love the looks of early models
So . . . ‘Stroms have a face only a mother could love, suffer from tractor-clatter and a Schwarzenegger clutch assembly, come with a wonky OEM windscreen and is condemned by self-righteous new ‘n shiny bedazzled moto journalists. Yep, kinda agree with that analysis, and yet . . . it’s hard to resist the ol’fart’s more intangible charms and very tangible low cost of ownership.
I really enjoy your voice and your vlogs. I think I'm going for V-Strom 1000 as my new bike. Thanks for your opinions. I already feel your No 1 but I couldnt care less. Number 1 bike on my list right now. Cheers!
Hi Blue Marble Rider, must say I’ve watched most of your reviews, and find them very honest, real world, just like the V Strom 1000. I owned a 2018 GT model and changed to the new 1050XT. Was wondering have you rode 1 yet ? Totally agree with you on the top 5 hates, but there is so much more to endear you to the V Strom. I put 11.5k miles on mine, never missed a beat, fuel economy was excellent, 55+mpg, and it could roll along with 2k revs in 4th gear 2up whilst touring, or mix it with other bikers packing more bhp. Great chassis and superb brakes, you could make a top 10 of the loves for the V Strom 1000. The question is Why did I change ? I test rode the 1050XT and loved it. Has all the same virtues in a more polished guise, the ride by wire throttle in my opinion, is the stand out feature, plus I love the new colour scheme in orange and white, bit of a sucker for that kinda thing. There’s some positive reviews, and some negative on the 1050, I think Suzuki have taken the right approach, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Maybe it’s not a big enough upgrade to tempt current owners from their 1000’s, but it is still an exceptional value for money motorcycle. It’s great to know that you are going to keep yours and ride the wheels of it, fair play, and keep the vlogs coming, they’re the best 👍
I bought my V-Strom 650 (similar engine sound to your 1000) without ever being near one in real life. It doesn't matter why, but I just called the dealer and paid for it online. I was a Terminator 2 kid and I loved his Harley' sound. It was a v-twin, my bike had a v-twin. Smaller, true, but still... So I was expecting a gorgeous noise. You can't imagine my disappointment when I went to pick up my bike... That was no Harley sound! It has some kind of hissing, something whistle-like, on top of the V sound... I don't know if it's the air intake, the valves, some internal friction or what. That being said, after a couple of years, I can say that I love my bike very much. It's incredible how you can use it for everything and how well it does in every situation, also easy to maintain. But you can learn that only if you give it a chance!
Ah, the Suzuki swirl (engine idle sound). Funny my wife's S40 Boulevard had it as well, despite a completely different motor. V-Strom's are the Subaru's of adventure bikes. Won't win a beauty contest or a race (unless you have a WRX), but their capabilities will surprise and reliability amaze!
I never had anyone say anything negative about it. I’ve gotten nothing but compliments. Idle sound is nice to me. The throttle grunt is even better. The only thing I don’t like is the stock windscreen and the dates dash. Everything else is just fine. I have fun. Makes me happy. All these critics and journalists just follow whatever the most popular voice says.
Yep you got it right all of it. I am On a 2018 leftover got it still in a crate 2 yrs ago put 5k on it so far and i will never get rid of it. It does everything just well enough. You got me on the clutch the 2018 has the easiest pull i have ever had.
I have a 2014 DL1000 that's been a great bike for my purpose, cross country mostly on secondary roads camping when possible. I agree with all five of your things, but have to comment on number 4, the motor sound at idle. When I first bought the bike, I asked the dealer if there was a problem with the engine, something had to be loose in there. I now describe it's idle as imitating a worn out sewing machine on crack cocaine.
I think that is just about the perfect description. I have had more than a few car drivers roll down their windows and ask if my bike is ok :-). I always tell them I wear ear plugs, so it must be!
Spot on. I had a 2017 1000. The stock windshield was horrible. I bought the same givi you have and it solved that issue. So I retire and downsize to a 2019 vstrom 650. For a few reasons. Insurance being one. Being retired on a fixed income one must budget. Lol. Ok here’s the point. I’m 5’10”. The stock windshield on the 650 is bloody amazing. I have owned 5 Vstroms. I was absolutely certain I was going to have to replace it upon purchase. But it’s perfect for me. I’m super impressed. Lol
I've got the 2006 version. I've tried to sell it twice for a change. Couldn't do it, in the end. It's such an all rounder. So comfy, good power etc. Have it 5 yrs too.
It's such a good all round bike. The others in my stable are more desirable, and perhaps more fun, but they are not able to do so much, so well, and so comfortably. Therein lies the conundrum. If I sell the Strom, it will leave a hole which few other bikes can fill.
I know what you mean about that agricultural sound of the V-1000. Earplugs fix that. My '03 had 50k mi. when I bought it for a good price. I wanted it for a long-legged bike to take to TX. I have a Honda CB1100 for in-town duties. I do the shift lever pre-load and the short stroke of the clutch lever to shift, and it reduced clutch effort.
Love the Vstrom and I would love to have one in my shed as well next to the GSX S 1000. My GSX S 1000 seems to have a heavy clutch also. Great interesting video Mate.
I agree with every point you made (mine is 30K miles). Noise at idle- it's the clutch design, Stroms have a clutch that eventually leads to the "chudder", but until then it rattles away- 1050 has the same issue as well.
In that case "form follows function" and that's absolutely perfect. Since I'm riding as a guide, I like to see what's going on behind me, without vibrating mirrors 👍
agree with the stock windshield - changed out to the airflow like yours on my '16. The other ones are a bit of stretch but I guess you had to come up with something.. I would add the weight when it comes to off road.. enjoy your videos.. good info shared... and live just north of you in the Comox Valley...
I have a 2012 1000. Luv it. Never , ever had buyers remorse. Even like the way it looks. Metal flake red, metal flake black. What's not to love.? Very comfy. Seen a good part of BC on the back of it. Reliable. Don't care what others think. I am riding it. Not them.
If you want a really good sound, change out the stock pipe for a Yoshimura 77 with the baffle removed. Absolutely brilliant sound for the big Vee, thoroughly recommend it. I love the vstrom's so much, I have both the 650 and the big Vee. Will be very interested to hear YOUR opinion of the 2020 1050XT when you finally get to ride one in Canada. I am seriously looking at trading my 2014 big Vee for the new one next year. I would get the Yellow/blue colour scheme with the gold rims. Ride safe brother, all the best from Oz.
Ok guys, my wife and I ride 2018 and 19 xt 1000s. Absolutely awesome bikes! The 650 I hear is a well deserving bike, but we are more higher speed road oriented in our travels and with the factory hard bags, the bigger engine works well. Although we are not tall riders, 5-6 and 5-4, the turbulence from the factory screen is an issue. We moved the windshields to their highest positions and worked very well at that point. One thing that was interesting, the helmet design makes a huge difference! My shoei hornet is a wonderful helmet but reacts horribly to buffeting with the stock windscreen. Take off the visor on the helmet and the problem goes away. My older rf1100 works fantastic because of smooth profile. Hope this helps. Luckily parts for the stroms are inexpensive and everywhere leaving us riders with the ability to truely tailor the riding experience👍
Great feedback, Richard. I hear you about the stock oem screen: I noticed the same thing regarding lowering my visor on my un-peaked older helmet with the stock screen on the 2014 Vstrom 1000 - keep the visor up, and there was no buffet, but close it and buffet occurred. Very strange.
Personal taste when it comes to bike design (or design in general) is a really curious thing, I've always been a "big trail bike" kind of guy, and, unlike you and many others, I always loved the looks of the big trail Suzukis, from the old dr800 Big, to the 1st v-strom, the 2nd version is the one I like the less (still wouldn't keep me from buying one) and the latest version is also top. Here's my top of big trails design: "1 the Ducati mustistrada 1200s, pikes peak edition - my nº1 bike at present "2 All the big trail Suzukis - never owned one to my chagrin "3 the BMW gs800 (black and yellow) absolutely stunning looks, but a bit lacking on power+torque "4 the 2nd version of the Africa twin 750 the most beautiful of the XX century, but also a bit lacking in power (not so much in torque). had one back in the 90s. "5 the latest KTM 1290R, for the looks too, but mainly for the awesome machine that it is and that makes it look even better. "6 the GS1250 rally "7 All big trail Triumphs. I still have an old 900 Tiger and a 1050 tiger "8 the Kawasaki versys 1000, latest version (I had to include a Kawa in my top) " all other big trails "259 - the Honda varadero 1000, (I can say I owned from 1999 to 2008 the ugliest big trail bike ever made).
I can see you've thought this through! They've all grown on me, for sure, and there are times the strom catches my attention. My dirty little secret is that I like anything that looks Dakar/Rally like the old KTM 640 & the Tenere. Probably the most universally detested look, but as you say looks are subjective. That big barn door Dakar fairing has a curious effect on me. I'm guessing that if the new Nordrstom looks anything like the original mock up, we will both like it...a lot! Cheers.
For a litre ADV type bike, it's likely the lowest. 31 inch inseam would be enough to nearly flat foot. I'm 33 inch and can flat foot easily. Best way is to try one. There is a lower seat too. Cheers.
I have a '19 1000. Luv it and think I have mine lookin pretty good, 😊. I'm 5"8' and have not a problem with the stock windshield although I did change it out for a darker one just for looks. I ride with 1250 and 1600 BMW's every week and have no problem staying with them on our twisty roads in the Okanagan.
I love mine. I do wish it had cruise control. I also refer to it more as a tractor engine than a motorcycle engine. I'm 6'3" I did put a clamp on wind buffer on top of the windshield. But it wasn't a big issue.
I remember pulling over and telling my friends to listen to this like a tractor engine, pull in the clutch maybe better hahaha, unlike the 09 650 which engine was music to my ears, my engine also whistles ,i was praying to the Suzuki Gods to change the 1050 engine ,but to my great disappointment the same, but i still like my vstrom 14
Prettiest bikes are sport bikes to me. Like you I don’t own one. I have the exact same V-Strom as you, and a Z900. Can’t stand riding a sports bike due to comfort. I love the look of my Vstrom... I have that acquired taste.
I agree: my Strom's looks have grown on me, to where I think it's a hansome bike...weird! I love the look of the panigale v2, but couldn't live with it. Besides, I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to be riding something that red :-)
WOW, how many adverts??? :O :O :O I really like the new shape V-Strom 1050, especially in the yellow, proper '80s styleee :D I think most love the V-Strom, they seem to be pretty awesome solid bikes! :-)
@@BlueMarbleRider Just a few. I've stopped TH-cam adding auto midroll adverts on my recent videos as they seem to think we only want to watch adverts instead of the actual content of the video!
@Mangetout ahh, I don't have a problem with advertising, I enjoy watching the vids so am happy for content creators to earn a bit of money in ad revenue, it is just TH-cam shoving in double non-skipable adverts every 2min that boils my piss.
Not really. It has the vtwin 1000 which is the bigger version of the 650, but the chassis is more adv bike like. Love the sv650 - they used to do an sv1000 upto 2007 and before that the TL1000s, but I think they missed the character of the 650. Cheers.
i have a 2016 V Strom 1000. As well as the rattly clutch sound, mine developed a distinct knocking sound at tick over. Clutch basket was replaced under warranty but still the same so they rebuilt the bottom end (under warranty). Still not sure what the actual issue was, the dealer had never come across this before on this engine and couldn't identify a specific fault, but it seems OK now, apart from still having the rattly clutch noise. Seems replacing one Suzuki clutch basket for another doesn't cure the rattly clutch experienced by many. Fair play to the dealer (Bridge Motorcycles Exeter UK) for dealing with it, and to Suzuki for honouring the warranty. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had the knocking sound which required my engine strip down, what is was and how it was resolved. Cheers
I've never heard of the knock before: sounds like something was mis-aligned or the cam-tensioner was not set or working correctly in the bottom end and corrected like you say - likely fortuitously - on the rebuild. The OEM clutch basket is a rattler; and new ones only last a few thousand km before making the sound again. There a many rebuilders out there who replace components with different springs, belville washers and remachine the gears with tougher metal. The chudder/rattle is present on all versions of the DL1000. They have made changes to the 2018 up and the subsequently to the 1050, but the 2018 was ineffective in reduceing the chudder/noise as the plate still moves and the inner bearing surface wears oval due to excess play and small surface. Werks Parts LLC will replace them with a wider bronze bushing honed to size - the gear gets more support. The 1050 I'm not sure about yet, but I suspect...no improvement. Mine is showing early signs at 36000km; and likely I'll send my basket away next winter. Cheers.
@@BlueMarbleRider Thanks for the reply and suggestions re the clutch. I bought mine second hand and noticed the knock when about 4000 miles on the clock. I've only done another 7000 miles since the warranty work (hardly any in 2020 and none at all since Christmas due to lock downs here) and so far I can live with the clutch as it is. I bought it for the upright riding position and for a comfortable perch for my wife but it's been great to ride whether on local country lanes or German autobahns.
Jeah, the 650 xt is great. But i am too tall for the 650. Thats the only one reason, why i bought the 1050xt. And now i love the bike so much with all these little extras. Hill hold assistent is a incredible cool feature. Do i need it? No. Do i love it? Yes :-)
Sinc about 4 weeks I am owner of one of the last 1000XT models, which I got for an increadable low price. I agree with almost all what you mentioned, but I have one in addition, at least for me. I am 192 tall and I have big hands. Comming from a Kawasaki VN 1700 Nomad, I find the grips too small with 120 mm. The power needed for the clutch compaired to the Kawa is nothing. (for me) Regards from Germany
Thanks a lot for this video. I ride the BMW F800GS since 10 years and the clutch sounds exactly as horrible as the clutch on the Suzuki SV1000s K3 I had have before this BMW. i´m a little bit dissapointed about this is an "production-gadget" on the v-engines of Suzuki in the newest generations too. But I miss the sound and the power of this great v-twin. I think I also will change back to Suzuki after my BMW expirience. The 1st gen. of the new V-Strom 1000 is an great bike without all the tft-screen rubbish and it haves the great v-engine with some fine modifications. Greets from the "Harz Mountains" in the middle of Germany.
Hahaha...you absolutely NAILED IT. People who owned a 30k BMW, Ducati or KTM must DEFEND their decision they`ve taken because they dont want to admit (including themselves) that they´ve literally BURNED about 10-15k compared to a new V Strom 1000/1050 JUST for IMAGE and PRESTIGE (Marketing). If youre grounded and honest to yourself, you cant blame the V-Stroms (650 included for the OUT-of-this-WORLD-Price-Ratio), but you cant blame the V-Strom Riders neither. The V-Stroms are so damn good, we can be glad that Suzuki build this thing and be FAIR to their customers with the costs/prices. PS to all V-Strom Owners, hold up on your opinion in your Riding Crew. You never have to hide because you miss about 60 bhp in compare to the ducatisti etc. 95% cant use the full 160bhp and take an advantage of it. Some of them are real fans, some onlys buyed them because of their prestige (ego). And lets never forget: we ride on official streets, we all want to get home to our loved ones safely. So really no need to hurry, no need for 160-180 bhp. Greetings from Germany. Patrick
I traded in my 8 years old 2012 GSXR1000L2 for a brand new 2018 VStrom DL1000XT in Mar 2020. No regrets on this decision as I need a bike that will grow old with me and yet handles well on tarmac plus it must be able to carry more luggage than a sports bike if I go touring. This bike has a good suspension setup even though the front is a 19" wheel. I only need increase the front fork compression by 1 click n rear preload by 2 clicks, the bike is good at attacking corners. Now I'm thinking of a up n down power shifter with a aftermarket end can.
That's quite a switch; but I hear you - it's like a comfy arm chair compared to a Gixxer. Suspension is great. Let me know what end can you go with. Cheers.
@@BlueMarbleRider Yes, it was quite a switch and consider the facts that I never ridden an ADV before. There was no test rides for the VStrom either. It was a gamble. I booked a hpcorse SPS Carbon Titanium end can. Photos and paper work have been submitted to the authorities. Awaiting for their approval. We weigh the stock end can and it is 5.5kg. The hpcorse is 3kg. www.hpcorse.com/en/sps-carbon-titanium
@@BlueMarbleRider So far this exhaust brand has not been approved for road use in Singapore yet. If mine is approved, my VStrom will be the first to install this exhaust here. :)
Vstrom Adventure bikes are not shiny and chromy like other bikes but they ride 1000% better than most other bikes. They don't sound like Harley so don't expect them too. With regards to screens and seats I've never owned a bike where both of these were not replaced with aftermarket ones.
Very good review, why did you get the Kawasaki when you had the V Strom? What was missing ? I have a naked bike and I am thinking of getting V Strom as second bike.
I would say It was down to pure immature lust... I always wanted a Z1 as a kid, and have always admired the lines. Then when I saw the Z900RS and rode it, it was visceral and just felt right. It certainly looked lovely. It is a trinket and not anywhere near the practical and comfortable ride the Vstrom is. But there are days when you just want small (in stature) naked bike, to throw on a back-pack and get back to basics. It is also very pleasing on the eye when you walk up to it :-). The Vstrom is missing nothing, except perhaps some looks and the snappy performance of the RS. Certainly, the Strom will not be going anywhere...Thanks for the feedback. Cheers.
@@BlueMarbleRider Thank you for fast reply, Good Honest answer, I am sure you can make a video on the subject, Comfort Vs Look, I am kind of new to motorcycle riding( 40 Years away) , just got a good deal on Suzuki GSX S750 and went for it, now I feel , it is not made for Hwys or longer rides, no wind protection , uncomfortable seat. Don't get me wrong, It is a very nice bike, fast , very good quality and finishes, it sounds just like your Kawasaki( inline four), but not comfortable when you have to get on Hwys or faster road, even with a touring Windshield on it. I am not going to sell it any time soon ( it has 5 year free warranty) and I hate to lose money on it, so I am thinking maybe I get a V-Strom 1000 or 1050 for my longer ride and keep the GSX as my 2nd bike . Your video and comments helped a lot. Thank you from Ontario
@@HS99876 Great to hear from another Canuck. Can't go wrong with either: the price on the gen 2 old stock are fabulously low if you can still get one. Yes the GSXS750 is a lovely bike. I find I value each bike more after I have ridden the other...funny that!
@@BlueMarbleRider it is always good to see Canadian reviews, I am subscribed to your channel. I will wait until my honeymoon period is over with Suzy ( not to upset her) and start looking for V Strom in November, December. I like to buy new for price of used, but i think it will be hard to find V Strom with big discount because of popularity. I picked up Suzy from Montreal with big discount in November last year. Drive safe
I sold my 1000 and bought a KTM 790 adventure. I am now kicking myself that I sold my vstrom 1000. I have just sold the ktm and I’m going back to a V Strom. However, I am considering the lighter 650, but I’m wondering is that enough? Will I be disappointed in it after having the 1000?
Right. Agree with all your comments. My 2019 dl1000xt has all that and more...damn but it is a pain cleaning the spoked rims. I have to resort to a toothbrush...which is way extreme for me. Wish I had the cruise control of the new ride-by-wire throttle, but the new headlight/windshield combo misses the mark even worse than just the plain old nasty beak on the stroms. Love my Strom, mind you, I didn't buy it for the looks. I lowered mine 1 inch , cause I am a shorty and it was a handful two-up stopping on uneven pavement. Seems to handle even better lowered, by the by.
Yep HATE the 650 (gen 1) windshield too. I stopped 30 minutes into a long ride took out screwdriver and removed it. Fortunately it Fitted into my top box 👍. Love ❤️ not having a screen on this bike.
Have tried 1050 didn’t like the seat hard as my ktm that’s why I got shot of it ktm that is ok for 30 mins could never do 3 hrs plus so unless I got a 1050 dirt cheap think I will stick with my 2017 cheers stay safe
Good video but I must respectfully disagree with your generalized statement about the looks of the ADV style bikes. As an Africa Twin owner I have no beak on the front of my bike and the looks are among the best in the class.
Thanks. I guess looks are subjective, although my view of the Vstrom's looks have improved - I guess it's a case of getting used to it over time. Cheers.
The Vstrom was my first choice till I got a good deal on a NC700X. Happy with the NC700X but I'd like to try the V. Is power the only difference between the V 650 and 1000?
No. The 1000 is only a few pounds heavier, yet does not feel top heavy - like the 650 has a tendency to at creeping speeds. The suspension is fabulous on the big strom, whereas it is adequate to fair on the 650. Fuel econ and range is not as good on the big strom.
I disagree on some of your comments. I've got a older 2008 vstrom 1000. I personally prefer the look of the older bike. It has a much better fairing. As for the engine sound. I've fitted a pair of venom exhaust cans, it sounds brilliant and other traffic hear you coming. I also have a aftermarket taller screen which makes motorway riding much better. The one thing I do find very annoying about the bike is it doesn't like commuting in 20 mph zones as much of London is now. It cuts out and judders at this speed. A fuel injection mapping issue I'm told. I do know what you mean about the clutch hydraulic system being heavy. I rebuilt mine, with new seals, and its much better now. Overall its a very underestimated machine, and can be bought quite cheap here in the UK. A lot of bike for your money.
Thanks for the feedback, Micheal. I ran into a gen 1 rider the other day who said much the same thing. He had the clutch rebuilt and wouldn't sell his bike for the world. Cheers.
Owned mine for just over two years. I would say the things I don't like are 1. No Cruise Control; 2. Stock screen, changed for Puig Touring screen; 3. Exposed oil filter looks wrong, have covered with Givi Trekker plate. Other than that great
It's amazing how many bikes have oil filters pointing forward now...The new one fixes the cruise control, but I agree, that would have been nice. Cheers.
I'll bash the V-Strom. Specifically, the DL1000XAL8. Bash it all the time. Have to regularly take the dents out of my skid plate. The only things I dislike about my V-Strom is that it could use another four inches of suspension travel, two more inches of ground clearance and a 21" front tire. That sounds like the 2023 V-Strom 1050 DE. But, in the choice to replace my 2018 with a 2023 or to get a DR650SE, the DR wins. I already have a capable V-Strom.
Just got back from the Kawasaki Suzuki Dealership and sat on the 2019 V Strom 1000 and Z900RS , the V felt a lot heavier than the Z ? My wife liked the look of the Z , don't know how it would be 2up on ?
Yes the Vstrom is 228kg wet; the Z900RS is 210kg wet and holds its weight lower. As for two up - no comparison: your wife will be MUCH happier on the back of the strom (my wife to your wife :-). For an adv bike, the strom is the lightest litre bike out there, and holds it's weight lower (V twin) than most of the others. So, while it felt heavier than the little 900, it doesn't feel it when you are rolling. Hope this helps.
@@CAPTLIEPS What a lovely GS! It depends on your needs (modern suspension, brakes and eclectronics). But to if it were mine, I'd keep it - it's worth more to you than someone else...Tough call. Cheers.
I bought an 04 V-Strom 1000 with 12,000 miles on the bike. Bought it from the original owner and it came with the owners manual and the guy kept records of all maintanance and the bike was well maintained. Now to the noise part. The bike has a clattering/ knocking noise at idle after the bike has been warmed up. Is this normal ? Ive heard that this is a similar motor to the TL 1000 and the TL stands for "Ticks Loudly" ? I know 12000 miles is low milage for this model so Im praying this knocking noise is not going to lead to catastrophic failure. Does anyone else have this knocking sound at idle ?
T-Bone - the noise is normal with the engine. Part of it is the clutch basket too. The springs get worn, and basket chudders - quite noisy, but not damaging. Easily fixed with an aftermarket hardened basket (werksparts.com/).
Good review Screen is awful, Suzuki should just hand that part of the bike over to Givi (we’ve all got the airflow’s maybe Suzuki are on a kick backs ) Looks & sound are subjective, my 17 still sounds okay no clutch basket issues but that’s an easy fix if it does occur, it’s not a looker that’s for sure. The seat I find really painful so I purchased a gel Wild Ass seat cushion which works well. The headlights are appalling verging on the dangerous - Rigid Industry spots (D4’s) resolved that one. And it’s top heavy with a full fuel load, so you have to be careful moving it around off the bike. Clutch is okay on my 17, it’s not great but it’s not terrible in London traffic. I’ve also installed an SW Motech gear shifter (accommodate my big ass bike boots plus massive adjustability), together with Honda Gold Wing foot pegs - a direct fit. Keep the reviews coming 👍
TOTALLY agree with you about the Lights. If suzuki has an Achilles Heel, that is it! I have an 07 DR650, and its Headlight is a JOKE! For that reason alone, I won't ride it after dark. I'm not going to change it, as I'm planning to sell the DR & get a DL1000, which I WILL upgrade the lighting.
I am on my third Vstrom 1000 2010 ,2015 , and I just bought a 2019X in yellow with spoked rims all are great bikes. As for your comment about the clutch I can't say for sure but I feel the 2019 clutch pull to me seams easier than it was on my 2015 I don't know if they made a change but that is my impression . I am not a fan of the new look 1050 so I plan to keep this one till the wheels fall off. Bought this bike from Argyll Motorsport in Edmonton Alta for $11370 all in GST included there is no better bike value for your money Keep up the good work.
That's a great deal - friend of mine got one for 10k but that was before the province and the feds took their share...It's quite possible that they lightened the springs in the later ones together with the basket. I'll figure that out when I ride the 1050. Cheers.
I bought the 18 version of your bike for exactly the same price from exactly the same dealership last year. Crated the bike and shipped it to Kenya where I’m riding it daily. Excellent bike. My number one issue was ground clearance so I raised the suspension 4cm. It’s ok now.
Recently i traded in my 2018 1000xt, for some thing different.ish!! However there is something reassuring about owning the vstrom. My biggest dislike was its name. I felt it never fitted the look or feel of the bike. Great chassis and brakes. Clutch baskets were known to rattle on the older bikes.maybe yours is affected. Likeable rider rattled me to with his comment. I would have no problem owning another .
I love my 2014 V Strom 1000! Delkevic 18" polished exhaust, footpeg lowering kit, gearshift relocation kit, Protaper bars 1" up and back risers. My dislike... No cruise!!
I am getting ready to start looking for a used V-Strom1000. Is there anything that can be done about the clutch issue? I ride in NYC most of the time - tons of start and stop. the clutch on my drz400 drives me crazy as it is...
Owners who ride the 17 on bike, are telling me that it is lighter than the 14-16 version, although I can't verify that. I have a friend with a DRZ400 and he complains about the heavy clutch too. Cheers.
got a 2018xt my everday commuter and country roads speedster. took windscreen off completly much much better. bugs suck but i find it way more comfortable and less distracting. bike loves to rev and she'll go hard. if only the gearing was shorter 5th and 6th gear be more useable. 21000km later still enjoying it. if anyones interested it loves penrite oil.
@@whocanmakeyourwholeweek7272 Yes I've heard of others doing that and going naked. Took the top part of my Givi off once - it was great too, but not as smooth as the whole thing. Cheers.
The jacket is an Olympia Ranger 4 Waterproof Jacket. Great value if you can find one. th-cam.com/video/_gj1h7OLfqY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BlueMarbleRider
Sounds like you've found the same comfy armchair fit that I have. I feel the same way - it's great place to be. Cheers.
I think 2nd gen 1000's are cool looking. 1st gen, not so much albeit anvil tough.
Actually - I think you nailed it. Nicely put. Cheers.
Completele agree.
A man in the UK has a gen 1 DL1000 that has way over 400k miles on the original engine. All documented. Amazing engines.
My down list:
1.Exhaust is whisper quiet
2.Wind buffeting on top of helmet.
3.Occasional 2nd gear pop out after clutchless up shift.
4.Hand guards are not deep enough for long fingers.
My up list:
1.Excellent Suspension/Damping
2.Decent Comfort
3.Great Chassis/Handling
4.Good Power
5.Excellent Brakes
6.Excellent intuitive easy to read display.
Neutral list:
1.Looks
Like the list - mine no longer gets the buffeting as I have an after market screen. I've never experienced the second pop out. Agree about the lack of exhaust note, although I do find the clutch and mechanicals to be a little off putting. Cheers.
Update to my comments 3 yrs ago. Nothing has changed still riding at 71 and no plans to stop yet. Bike now 22yrs old and sparkling. Ride safe my friends.
That's great to know. Mine is still going strong. How many miles/km do you have on it? Cheers.
Thanks, Tagmanone - appreciate the insights and feedback. I'm sure my kids have their eyes on my bike too...but that'll be a looong time!
Nicely put, Hugo.
I think you summed the bike up perfectly. Cheers for the feedback.
Blue Marble Rider! Thanks for a great vid! I own a Vstrom 1050xt and I have to say, I AGREE 100% with you when you say that people who bash VStroms HAVEN'T ridden them. I love my bike. Fortunately for me, I don't have the pesky buffeting issue with my windscreen, I guess I'm about perfect height before it becomes a problem.
i have no buffeting issues either, i removed the screen completely.
I have a first Gen DL1000. I am OK with the looks of mine. The new 1050XT Adventure in Yellow is awesome looking in my eyes. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Quite like the looks myself.
Glad you came through that, Rod. It's sad losing an "old friend" like that; hope you find another. Cheers.
So . .
Clutch is sweet. Looks grow on you .
Cheers EJ. I will be riding the new one sometime later this week. Looking forward to it!
If it was a European bike, then the sound would be labelled as character. ;-)
I had put 64k on my 04' Strom 1000.. crossed the USA twice and back. Rode er in the dirt too... I always loved that stonkey motor.
I love my 2014 VStrom 1000 adv. I put a National Cycle 2-up windshield and a slip-on. Made a big difference
Might want to fix that loose clutch basket which Zuki didn't change from the first Vee gen.
Lol
Thanks for the feedback, Dave. Re 650 shield: I wonder if they've changed it since mine in 2012 - that was horrible. Cheers.
BlueMarbleRider oddly enough...I don’t think so?
I've got the 2006 version. I've tried to sell it twice for a change. Couldn't do it, in the end. It's such an all rounder. So comfy, good power etc. Have it 5 yrs too.
It's such a good all round bike. The others in my stable are more desirable, and perhaps more fun, but they are not able to do so much, so well, and so comfortably. Therein lies the conundrum. If I sell the Strom, it will leave a hole which few other bikes can fill.
Thanks for the review. Fyi, Lamb Chops eventually rode 1050 some 3 month ago and loved it 🙂
Chopsy seemed to prefer it to the AT as well. Good taste! :-)
I respect your review. As a rider every bike has its flaws but some bikes exceed your expectations
Well said: this one exceeded my expectations (see my review). It's likely the last bike I would sell. Cheers.
I rented a v strom 650 and know exactly what you mean by “agricultural”. I like the sound and throttle control.
Love the Vstrom and I would love to have one in my shed as well next to the GSX S 1000. My GSX S 1000 seems to have a heavy clutch also. Great interesting video Mate.
I'd like to have one next to my beloved Triumph Street Twin…
I agree with every point you made (mine is 30K miles). Noise at idle- it's the clutch design, Stroms have a clutch that eventually leads to the "chudder", but until then it rattles away- 1050 has the same issue as well.
So far it's just the rattle for me. Might have to get the basket re finished by an aftermarket (not going to put the same OEM basket in!). Cheers.
You forgot the wonderful truck mirrors !!
Yes, not things of beauty, but, at least they don't vibrate and you can see the world bethind you...so not all bad :-)
Hi, Drew - great to have fellow Van Isle rider watching the vids. Thanks for the feed back. Cheers.
I have a 2012 1000. Luv it. Never , ever had buyers remorse. Even like the way it looks. Metal flake red, metal flake black. What's not to love.? Very comfy. Seen a good part of BC on the back of it. Reliable. Don't care what others think. I am riding it. Not them.
Nicely put.
Should be swinging a leg over one soon. Cheers.
I got GPR wide open exhausts (2002 model) great sound.
Same pipe on mine. Sounds awesome
@@BlueMarbleRider thanks for the reply👍great narration on your vid! Keep up the great work
Personal taste when it comes to bike design (or design in general) is a really curious thing, I've always been a "big trail bike" kind of guy, and, unlike you and many others, I always loved the looks of the big trail Suzukis, from the old dr800 Big, to the 1st v-strom, the 2nd version is the one I like the less (still wouldn't keep me from buying one) and the latest version is also top. Here's my top of big trails design:
"1 the Ducati mustistrada 1200s, pikes peak edition - my nº1 bike at present
"2 All the big trail Suzukis - never owned one to my chagrin
"3 the BMW gs800 (black and yellow) absolutely stunning looks, but a bit lacking on power+torque
"4 the 2nd version of the Africa twin 750 the most beautiful of the XX century, but also a bit lacking in power (not so much in torque). had one back in the 90s.
"5 the latest KTM 1290R, for the looks too, but mainly for the awesome machine that it is and that makes it look even better.
"6 the GS1250 rally
"7 All big trail Triumphs. I still have an old 900 Tiger and a 1050 tiger
"8 the Kawasaki versys 1000, latest version (I had to include a Kawa in my top)
" all other big trails
"259 - the Honda varadero 1000, (I can say I owned from 1999 to 2008 the ugliest big trail bike ever made).
Cheers.
I recognized that local. Nanoose to Parksville. I’m in Ladysmith with a Vstrom 1000.
Yes, I was through Ladysmith the other day. Like the Saltair-Maple Bay run and the Yellowpoint/Crow and Gate stop. Cheers.
Thank for your honest review,
My question is, if the bike is okay for smaller riders, like me, I'm 167cm or 65,7 inches
For a litre ADV type bike, it's likely the lowest. 31 inch inseam would be enough to nearly flat foot. I'm 33 inch and can flat foot easily. Best way is to try one. There is a lower seat too. Cheers.
@@BlueMarbleRider thanks, going to test one next week 👍
The 2nd gen Ducati Multistrada, beak and all is gorgeous, as is the Africa Twin.
I love my gen 2 650, they look better than the gen 3 in my opinion.
@@shawnmclaughlin7418 not really..😁
@@shawnmclaughlin7418 I get your lingo now... 👍
Personal taste
I like ADV beak & look.
V Strom engine-wrrrr from cams & deep stock exhaust tone is distinctive I think.
True about the clutch heavy..specially in traffic jams..
So is there is alternative after market. ?
I'm sure there is, but I just grin and bare it. I'm not caught in stop and go too much on it, luckily for me.
I love mine. I do wish it had cruise control. I also refer to it more as a tractor engine than a motorcycle engine. I'm 6'3" I did put a clamp on wind buffer on top of the windshield. But it wasn't a big issue.
I just can't find a reason to replace it. That's not something I've ever said about another motorcycle. Cheers.
Ive found the wind buffeting is coming from the sides of the bike not over windshield but under the windshield. I have the 2018 xt version.
It's certainly likely. The mirrors certainly don't help either.
Once again a very quality video from the Blue Marble! 😁👍
I found that swapping the mickey mouse rearview mirrors for kawasaki ER6n mirrors helped massively with the buffeting.
Interesting - there is definitely some buffet from the stock mirrors - I'll have to check that out. Cheers.
changed my mirrors too, less buffeting👍
I remember pulling over and telling my friends to listen to this like a tractor engine, pull in the clutch maybe better hahaha, unlike the 09 650 which engine was music to my ears, my engine also whistles ,i was praying to the Suzuki Gods to change the 1050 engine ,but to my great disappointment the same, but i still like my vstrom 14
44352 miles still going strong.
Great video, thank you. Very tempted to make this my first larger bike.
I really like the new shape V-Strom 1050, especially in the yellow, proper '80s styleee :D
I think most love the V-Strom, they seem to be pretty awesome solid bikes! :-)
I haven't watched it, too many ads!
The SV 650 has plenty of power and handles great which I liked. Is this just a 1000 version of that? If so I want one.
I truly miss the dry clutch racket of my Gen 1 Multistrada.
Just put some lug nuts in a biscuit tin and shake - it should evoke some emotions :-)
agree the engine whine is awefull. doesnt seem to happen with the sv range.
1. Reliability 2. price 3. up keep cost--for all these reason I bought the 650
That's what I'd go for too, though I love the 1000's incredible agility…
Same here, V-Strom 650 XT 2018 I found it as the most efficient bike I've ever owned 😍
Jeah, the 650 xt is great. But i am too tall for the 650.
Thats the only one reason, why i bought the 1050xt. And now i love the bike so much with all these little extras. Hill hold assistent is a incredible cool feature. Do i need it? No. Do i love it? Yes :-)
I nearly bought a 650. I decided it was too short for me. I'm 6 foot 2 with a 31 Inch inseam, so I NEED the 1000.
The power needed for the clutch compaired
to the Kawa is nothing. (for me)
Regards from Germany
Hi, JDR: perhaps get some after market heated grips - they are generally thicker. Great to hear from you in Germany. Cheers.
I bought some Grip Puppies for my Tiger 1050, extra thickness adds extra comfort, I'll always have them on my bikes from now on, they are awesome.
When you're riding a bike, you don't see it…
That's what my friend said about his ex's.
Thanks for the feedback - the Harz Mountains sounds like it would be a great place to ride. Cheers.
@@7777Gixer Look great, and did a search - Love that sound. Think I'll get the werks clutch first so I can hear the pipe :-)
Agree - most manufacturers seem to skimp on seats and screens these days - as well as leaving off centre stands. Cheers.
Good question, mrcreative. See my answer to your question...th-cam.com/video/YNga3hmGuvM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the comments, Rusty. Just finished a few days on a 1050. Interesting. Ride review to come.
Where are you riding? I'm thinking BC. But what roads did you take? And BMW's are great in a garage. They don't break down while collecting dust :P
Central east coast, Vancouver Island. Cheers.
I agree, not the best but it is always fun to ride it
Yep HATE the 650 (gen 1) windshield too. I stopped 30 minutes into a long ride took out screwdriver and removed it. Fortunately it Fitted into my top box 👍. Love ❤️ not having a screen on this bike.
did the same to my 2018 strom. 15min after i bought the bike, i removed the screen . best mod, no wasted money on screens.
Cheers.
5 ‘ 9” no problem with buffeting from any of the 3 screen positions.
I hear that often. Long torso, or taller people seem to get the turbulence from the top of the OEM screen. Thanks for the feedback.
Great video, well shot and nice insights.
I hate the fact you need to dismantle the bike almost completely to get to certain places (topping coolant for example)
Valid point: sadly it's the same with a lot of semi faired or compact engined bikes these days. Cheers.
Love mine and you are spot on stay safe
Cheers, Pete.
I was strongly considering a NC700X and literally bought my V last week instead for the smoking deal I was offered. Something about great minds? LOL
Cheers.
Get a 2 brothers pipe set and remap the fuel and you won’t hear any agricultural sounds anymore.
I find seat a bit hard. I to dislike the clutch rattle at idle. Everything else on the bike is great and I would buy another one after this one
Robust bikes for sure.

Very articulate voice.. nice
Good review
Screen is awful, Suzuki should just hand that part of the bike over to Givi (we’ve all got the airflow’s maybe Suzuki are on a kick backs )
Looks & sound are subjective, my 17 still sounds okay no clutch basket issues but that’s an easy fix if it does occur, it’s not a looker that’s for sure.

No cruise!!
The 1050 remedied that, and it is nice, but not enough for me to trade up yet. Sounds like you've got your bike sorted...Nice. Cheers.
Cheers.
