Thanks man. I've been working on cars all my life and had my first clutch car in the 80s but sold it soon after. I never bought another clutch car again, even though it didn't give me problems. I got another clutch car now and it appears that the throw out bearing is going out so you finally taught me the science behind how a clutch works and how to troubleshoot it. Very educational, thank you SO much. Just had a master cylinder & clutch assembly replaced, but the culprit, $1000 later, was the $31 throw out fork, lol! Gotta take it back in because when I release the clutch pedal, about halfway back up it sticks, then suddenly "pops" the rest of the way up. It's actually an audible "thump" sound too as it pops back up. I wish this video would have given me a clue as to why it's doing that. I just can't figure it out. Just spent 2 weeks without my car (2002 Subaru Forester), living in the country and a full time single mom, whew! I'm loathe to take her back in, but I don't want that thousand bucks to multiply! If every driver knew the basic mechanics of how their cars work, I don't think we'd be in the shop quite so much, lol! Thanks for including your bloopers, I was laughing with you! Comic relief is so very necessary when working on cars, gosh how my dad would swear and throw tools, when he'd make me "help" (really just watch) as he worked on cars out in our driveway. He really needed a son, lol! I'm grateful, I can install brakes, change a valve cover gasket, change tires, change oil and much more cause of dad making me "help" as a tween and teen age girl!
HeyRNW, I found the neatest Hispanic mechanic when I'm lost on my car. Jose has a small 3 bay shop and he's always working with his 2 other guys. He's so nice and informative. Plus he's really open and inviting! I go in his shop and hear his guys listening to the Mexican AM station and working and doing excellent work here in Lebanon Oregon. they did an excellent job on my 2001 water pump and etc timing belt change out. I wanted to try it, but i didn't have certain tools to really do a perfect job.
You are the best. I have looked at different videos where they explain as though they are deliberately intending to confuse! Clearly there is no continous shaft from the crankshaft and the input shaft. This is extremely hard to imagine when one considers that stuff must be continously connected from the engine to the wheels

I learned a lot from this video. What was especially surprising to me is that when you kill the car in a manual, I always thought it was the engine just not having enough power to turn the wheels which made the engine die, but instead its' the computer sensing an overload and shutting down, so interesting. I had a keychain rattle noise when the clutch pedal was NOT pushed in. Once you push the pedal in all noise stopped. Also, the car was kinda shaking when I pulled away from a stop. It turned out the flywheel was warped and burnt on 1 side. Resurfaced it and all issues are gone.

I appreciate your in depth explanation! How do you diagnose clutch judder / shudder? I used to have a dual-mass flywheel and now I have a single-mass flywheel and clutch kit, CDV removed and brake fluid flushed. I get an intermittent judder.... and I have no idea why.
Story to tell I'm 24 yrs old I bought my first manual car almost 2 yrs ago the clutch went out when I had 3 months with the car apparently the previous owner rode the clutch pedal all the time at first it started making this really bad noise when I would depress the clutch pedal throw out release bearing and then it wouldn't go into gear if the car was on and then the clutch pedal lost all of its pressure lol it went down all the way to the floor with no pressure had to replace it it's been by far the biggest expense I've had to do on my car I'm a DIYer but wasn't too knowledgeable on clutches but I do know for sure I will be replacing the clutch myself when it's time

It took me 5 or six videos to finally find this one that clearly shows how the diaphragm spring is mounted. It will be a rare sight soon. All of this is replaced by one single shaft in an EV, because non of this is needed. It's crazy how much simpler an electric drive train is.
I have a 98 civic with 195k original miles on the clutch. Had issues engaging in 1st after car warmed up. Replaced slave/master cylinders which seemed to help but still there’s resistance getting into gear once warm. Would this be an issue with the clutch or air in the lines?

Can you test the clutch by stalling on thrid gear to lessen the jump? Also, does stalling do any type of wear and tear or stress anywhere on the driveline?
Great video! My son car won't go in gear when I do try to put it in gear you can feel the car wanting to Lunge forward...his clutch is still hard. I think it's the fingers thats keeping the transition from disengaging. But when I bleed the line the cluch pedal stays on the floor till I pull it up. Is that normal?
My 4 cyl manual 06 Accord with 150k gentle miles now makes a mild and variable howling noise, that persists until I gently press on the clutch pedal, then it is quiet. I think there is play in my throwout bearing against the transmission input shaft. Just my guess from the sound. Somethimes it is quiet for a while, other times it makes that subtle dry howl noise. When driving, road noise and the hum of the engine are louder than this mild howling tone, so it isn't like a slipping belt howl. Could it be the inside diameter of the thrust bearing is worn a few thousandths, and is not a slop-free slip-fit on the transmission shaft, and so wobbles a little bit to make that howl? Anyhoo, it's probably going to run me a couple grand or more (mostly labor) just to replace that, so while I'm at it, it will get a new clutch, too.
Hello RandW, I got a 2014 camaro zl1, and it makes a sound between 1-3k rpm, its like a rattling sound coming from gearbox area. I just replaced the stock clutch to RXT clutch and the mechanic told me I got a bad slave cylinder, but i refused to replace it. Also, there is no sound when I am in neutral and full stop, so it happens only at low rpm and when cruising at low rpm then press the clutch to switch gear the sound stays until rpm drops below 1k. What do you think? is it the slave cylinder or something else?

I was told that the auxiliary water pump was the cause of the water loss, poor kid couldn't afford the 1800 they told him it was going to take to fix it, but as I'm looking at it and notice the outpour of water in the front, it really looks like the fault is the thermostat and or housing! So I've decided to do the entire front end!I have it ready to start replacing timing belt parts...noticed timing off, bar doesn't fit, looks like a tooth off on passenger side. At TDC, turn crank back 30 degrees and turn camshaft back so that the locking bar fits onto both cams?Your videos on replacing the cylinder head and service position are the absolute best. They have guided me to being confident in picking up really nice cars for what I normally wouldn't have been able to afford! Might I suggest that you consider, what I think, is a really cool idea? I suggest you take your show on the road! For instance, I have this problem, you travel to the problem and help the poor soul solve it! Easy!!!! You'd make a fortune, guaranteed! ok. i have a 95 integra gsr (manual). was sitting for a couple years. turned it on in june 2016 but would not drive, the clutch was to the ground. never happened before. alot was going on at the time and i didnt want to mess with it. i haven't touched it since. i did some research and priced a clutch master. what do u recommend for clutch issue and getting car going again after sitting. it doesnt pass smog either but have managed to with the help of old friends. please keep in mind im on a budget. thank you. :)
Typey1 some cars require you to do so otherwise it won’t turn on. If you have a vehicle that doesn’t have that function as long as you’re in neutral you don’t have to.
It's best at very cold temperatures because as you do so, you disengage the complete transmission. Since the trans oil is thicker when cold, you avoid a lot of frictional forces that could be a hindrance to the engine start
had the clutch replaced on my car last year and I'm thinking either the pressure plate or cluch release bearing took a crap prematurely , it's not a Master clutch cylinder nor clutch slave cylinder as i also replaced both same day as the clutch kit 🤷🏽♂️ just went through a scare few minutes ago while I was driving clutch wasn't catchin at all neutral in every single gear with the foot off the pedal 🤷🏽♂️
Hey bud. What if im in neutral but still sounds like something ain't meshing correctly.. did a gearbox oil change had slight shavings but not overboard. What is your opinion if I may ask pls bro?
Does the starter motor disengage with the flywheel? I'm guessing it must do otherwise the engine would be driving the starter motor in reverse, that would be a drag on the engine and prematurely wear out the starter motor.
I have been going through endless forums on the subject and dealing with my car's clutch issue; $1000, a new master cylinder and clutch assembly, only to find out it was the $31 broken throw out fork causing the problem, lol! I've heard a LOT of issues with bleeding out the air in the hydraulic lines... worth checking maybe?

So when shutting of a vehicle, is it a good idea to clutch down and then shut it off or? Also the same for starting it, clutch down or not?

ok. i have a 95 integra gsr (manual). was sitting for a couple years. turned it on in june 2016 but would not drive, the clutch was to the ground. never happened before. alot was going on at the time and i didnt want to mess with it. i haven't touched it since. i did some research and priced a clutch master. what do u recommend for clutch issue and getting car going again after sitting. it doesnt pass smog either but have managed to with the help of old friends. please keep in mind im on a budget. thank you. :)

Typey1 some cars require you to do so otherwise it won’t turn on. If you have a vehicle that doesn’t have that function as long as you’re in neutral you don’t have to.
It's best at very cold temperatures because as you do so, you disengage the complete transmission. Since the trans oil is thicker when cold, you avoid a lot of frictional forces that could be a hindrance to the engine start
Always do this. It disengages the gearbox so the battery only has to turn the engine. And there's that one time when someone leaves it in gear?

had the clutch replaced on my car last year and I'm thinking either the pressure plate or cluch release bearing took a crap prematurely , it's not a Master clutch cylinder nor clutch slave cylinder as i also replaced both same day as the clutch kit 🤷🏽♂️ just went through a scare few minutes ago while I was driving clutch wasn't catchin at all neutral in every single gear with the foot off the pedal 🤷🏽♂️

Does the starter motor disengage with the flywheel? I'm guessing it must do otherwise the engine would be driving the starter motor in reverse, that would be a drag on the engine and prematurely wear out the starter motor.
2007 Saturn ion, replaced clutch + cylinders. I see you have the same car. Bad master in 4 days. Any ideas? Maybe you dealt with it on that car???
I have been going through endless forums on the subject and dealing with my car's clutch issue; $1000, a new master cylinder and clutch assembly, only to find out it was the $31 broken throw out fork causing the problem, lol! I've heard a LOT of issues with bleeding out the air in the hydraulic lines... worth checking maybe?
