I agree with you 100% this to me is the greatest album that was ever made by any artist ! It always makes me happy. it’s just perfect every song! I can’t believe it gets zero airplay on the radio . Something’s fishy . and I can’t believe this group is not in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame.

The Monkees' best album. A winning formula: equal parts the guys and the studio pros. This is the truest representation of the Monkees musically.

This is my favorite Monkees album, too. I actually just listened to the vinyl copy I have last night. Chip Douglas is amazing on bass. Pleasant Valley Sunday with the Micky/Mike duet is so fantastic, I wish they did more songs like this. Door into Summer and Only Sleeping are gifts to Mike fans like me!

Mike didn’t get nearly the recognition he deserved for being a country rock pioneer and an amazing songwriter. Talk about multitalented, was there anything he couldn’t do?

I agree with you 100%, it is the greatest of Monkees albums. As Headquarters established a (Nesmith inspired) Country Rock foundation that many groups (Byrds, Poco, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Eagles, etc.) later built upon, PAC&J Ltd was a head of its time in its use of the Moog Synthesizer, played by Dolenz. This album perfectly encapsulating the era in which it was created. Recently I heard "Daily Nightly" on the Breakfast with the Beatles program (Serius Radio) as part of a 1967 Psychedelic series of songs. This made me extremely happy, thinking that finally the Monkees are getting some musical recognition. The fact that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a travesty!!

It is ridiculous that hip hop and country artists are in the HOF but the Monkees are not. Mike deserves to be in for his solo work AND as a member of the Monkees.

Great video Jeff thank you! Very insightful and interesting. I have always thought The Door into Summer is one of their all time top tracks. The chorus with Mickey is absolutely emotionally powerful. I am 61 years old and I still listen to The Monkees all the time. Craig Smith was in the band Penny Arkade. They recorded an unreleased album produced by Mike. It was released decades later on Sundazed. Craig became a hippie, recorded two psychedelic lps as Maitrea Kali. He later developed schizophrenia and died homeless.
Michael Murphy was in the Lewis & Clarke Expedition. They made one lp for Colgems.
Years later he had a number one hit with WILDFIRE.
This album is better than SGT. PEPPER.

With 5 fantastic lead locals from Mike, it makes it an easy choice to be my favorite Monkees album. The Micky Tracks are killer too. Pleasant Valley Sunday is one of their most played songs, yet I never get tired of it like Daydream Believer or I'm A Believer. Except for Hard to Believe, the Davy songs are great. I love Cuddley Toy and Star Collector. It is a shame that his songwriting and music tastes were more in the Hard to Believe vain. Peter Percival... is less than 30 seconds and works great as a lead-in to Pleasant Valley Sunday. The only thing keeping this album from being perfect is Hard To Believe. Imagine how good it would have been if they had kept Daydream Believer on it instead of saving it for later. Goin' Down could have also been on the album, I'm not sure why that one didn't make it.

The album is filled with great songs. The only thing that spoils my enjoyment of listening to the LP - or CD - is "Hard to Believe". It just doesn't belong on this album, and that's the spot where "Daydream Believer" should have been placed, which is also a Davy vocal. If I remember right, none of the Monkees even played on "Hard to Believe", but one or more members played some instruments on all the other tracks.
Every time I've made copies of the LP or CD through the years for use in my car or on other portable devices, I dropped "Hard to Believe" and inserted "Daydream Believer" there instead. I sometimes also put "Goin' Down" as the final track, instead of "Star Collector".

SHE HANGS OUT is kind of a 50's throwback to the 60's with all the "DO RUN-RUN" dew whap riffs.
Wow, HARD TO BELIEVE is a really great track, so lots of difference of opinion there. An LADY'S BABY a very lovely and heartfelt song SHOULD HAVE BEEN on this album. (Same re TEAR THE TOP OFF MY HEAD, which is much more of what was going on at the tim----yes i was very much of that generation ). PETER PERCIVAL's inclusion was utterly stupid. dumb.
Ok lots of differences of opinion. I was an open-minded (musically) "hippie" in those days in that I actually paid attention to the evolution of this very commercial tv band shile they were being virtually disparaged and dismissed by the youth culture at the time. I could see how much potential as a group they actually had if they could become more their authentic selves, which was actually to come about during this time. And, with time, they were proven to be far more respectable and enduring than anyone thought was possible. They were more than a passing fad.
Thanks again for the video album breakdown. One thing thi album had was a great variety of song types and styles, a quality they shared with The Beatles.

Michael wrote 2 songs on this album. AND he sang one of them. DON'T CALL ON ME. I know very well since I have the sheet music and used to play that quite often.
My issue with this album is exactly the fact that they didn't compose more of the songs. . I always found their own music much more unique and special/not as overtly formulaic. I've put my own albums together by stitching together cuts of only their own compositions. I made up my own cover for an imaginary album with a title that I thought at the time was a natural, a self-aware title called EVOLVER, blending a take on The Beatles album in a self-aware comment with the idea of the evolution of the ape family evolving into humans and the idea of the Monkees themselves evolving into a full-blown band in their own right. I wrote to them at the time suggesting this idea, but I doubt it got to them.
When I worked on Michael's TV PARTS decades later I almost mentioned this idea to him but thought he probably wasn't into re-visiting the whole Monkees things....yet.
    Thanks for the video.

I agree with Mike about Monkee dynamics except having a favorite Monkee does not mean disliking the other Monkees. Peter was always my favorite. I loved his voice; I loved his playing; I loved the silly and adorable character he created, but I also liked the other guys. I know you don’t think much of Peter’s voice or admire a lot of his songs and I respect your honesty, but it was frustrating being a Peter fan as a Monkee fan because Peter always, always got the short straw on these albums. In my opinion he had as much to offer as the other guys. Lady’s Baby, the song you dismissed as garbage, to me had a beautiful message and a nice laid-back melody. I liked it a lot.
Now, about this wonderful PAC&J LTD album. It is so very enjoyable! There is so much to love about this album. Pleasant Valley Sunday! Wow, what a song!! This is my second favorite album after Headquarters. I was happy with the whole thing and that they all participated in the production together on most of the songs, albeit with others. They had a great selection of songs. I don’t think there is a stinker in the bunch. And the cover art was totally groovy, man and perfectly 60s!
I can’t imagine how exhausting it must have been to do the TV show, concerts and then this stellar album! It’s a miracle they pulled it off under those grueling circumstances. It was good thing they were young when they did it! None of the Monkees were slackers, that’s for sure. Thanks for another stellar review!

This album is a fine bookend to the Summer of Love. As a co-op, The Monkees find a perfect balance between the two extremes of Headquarters and BB&M. But I have to say this: Chip Douglas really could play bass. Why does it sound so bad in songs like "Star Collector?" Whoever did the mix did him no favors.

A good overview of this album . One of the problems with the Monkees' catalog , for me , is that there is a lot of filler material on each album .
This album , at least , has some of the more interesting filler on it .
For example : Love is Only Sleeping , Don't Call on Me , and Star Collector , I could grow to like .
The Door Into Summer , Words , Daily Nightly , and Pleasant Valley Sunday ( my favourite Monkees song ) are all great .
The rest I can take or leave .
That said , this album I like more than most of their others .
