Duran Duran Album Deep Dives #6: Big Thing
An all-time favorite album. For a fun side trip listen to Panamanian singer Ruben Blades cover of “The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul”
Take into account COVID happened hence the cover being what it was.
Here Comes the Night disco version is the only Beach Boys song I actively avoid listening to. I have never heard it to this day.
I was living in Columbus when this tragedy occurred and spoke to some people who spoke to people who were there. I've got to hand it to that cop who was rightly a local hero. He knew it was a deadly situation and didn't wait for backup the way 90% would. He marched right in there like Dirty Harry and with one perfect shot from his twelve gauge took that coward out, injuring nobody else. As I recall, the cop amazingly did it when the dude had another person in a hold as hostage and had a gun to his head. It's not really about that, though. Its about the fire-breathing dragon of a guitarist (and, by all accounts, a wonderful person) the great Dimebag Darrel Abbot. RIP Dime. 😞
Steve Marriott never hit a stage where he didn't absolutely everything that he had. The man's passion and fury was matched by very, very few.
Not only the best rock singer but also one of the nicest blokes I ever met
These are GREAT dude. I plan on watching all of them. Thanks for your work.
He had a pretty long run for a casualty ...
One of the best,pure talent...
Thanks for NOT playing the best and final song on the album 😡
He was amazingly articulate for someone so young.
Whenever I want to hear real music-HUMBLE PIE-STEVE MARRIOTT GREATEST VOICE IN ROCK
Steve was an absolute beast! I see him in the same way I see Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, Rod Stewart, Chris Farlowe, and Terry Reid. Damn, just listed my six favorite English singers.
He was in good company! A one of a kind talent.
I was turned on to Chronic Town when it came out. I fell in love with R.E.M., Stumble is my favorite song, and life was never the same after I heard it! Murmur is my favorite of their albums, Pilgrimage my favorite on the album.
I love those early R.E.M. albums.
The best rock voice ever.
I recently did a cover of the guitar solo from the live version of “Driven To Tears” from November 29, 1980 and that guitar solo from the live version from November 29, 1980 is way better than the guitar solo from the studio version of the song
Rock n roll is an homage to little Richard and chuck berry.
Same situation - knew about this awful event, but didn't have much personal impact on me bc I had no interest in Pantera. Their music wasn't my thing. There was also a part of me that was like "what kind of a guy who's no longer in high school would go by the name 'Dimebag Daryl'". It didn't sound like the name of any adult I should have taken seriously (meanwhile, I'd be listening to songs by guys with dumb names like "Bono Vox" and "The Edge" - I have no legitimate defense 😄). But I can appreciate the man's talent and glad I got to know a bit more about him through your video. The footage of that fatal night is chilling. RIP, young man.
Thanks Tom! I’ve never really been a Pantera fan but I do appreciate what a gifted guitarist he was. I didn’t know very much about him before doing this video.
Hate on Nathan Gale for being a murderer, but make sure you hate the US government for refusing to help one of their own struggling veterans. Hate the USMC for training him only to kick him out once they realized he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. Nathan's excuse was he was sick. What's the excuse of all the people and organizations that failed to help Nathan Gale before he hurt someone else?
I don’t know anything about Nathan Gale so I can’t really comment about who should have or didn’t help him before it was too late. Just an unfortunate tragedy all the way around.
Thanks so much for this one Jeff. Seeing all the interviews was great and he does really seem super smart, energetic, likeable and yet down to earth. Love the LP Smokin' and "Tin Soldier" (Todd Rundgren does a cover of that one). A one of a kind voice, for sure. Well done man! 👍
Thank you Tobin! He was such a phenomenal talent.
Amazing album, just perfect and original
Agreed!
Killer vclt from Steve! Happy spinning brother 👍🤘🤘
Thanks Aaron! Steve rules!
I just got done Re Re listened it...Swinging The Chain..shit just grew on me..and Good Lord..Air Dance...seems like every time play i find another song that i used to skip..i jam out on it❤
It’s a great listen!
Phenomenal video Jeff! I’m truly in awe of your skill at doing these videos!👏👏👍🤘🤘
Thank you brother! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
RIP Dime! Blaze Bayley wrote a great song in memory of him.
He was a phenomenal talent.🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
They did Tin Soldier, gave us Lazy Sunday and introduced a new audience to Stanley Unwin. Marriott is an extraordinary talent, never forgotten. Paul.Weller is simply an anaemic tribute act.
Great video
Great record
Sad.
Hi Jeff!!! this was a cool surprise to see you doing an episode on Dimebag..... he really was a very talented guitar player and his legacy will live forever. cheers and be well
Thanks Cristian! One of the greatest of my generation. Cheers!
You should do one on Tom Evans of Badfinger, that was a pretty crazy story and a Rock And Roll Casulty Jeff....
Pete as well
@@tomflorio3639 Both.....
During Steve’s early career fellow musicians were amazed at what a powerful voice such a small statured man had. He was only 5’2” but had a voice of a giant. Steve has a daughter who’s a remarkable talent as she can sing lead or back up. RIP Steve
About 8 months before the Columbus shooting, I saw Damageplan in Cincinnati at Bogarts. That idiot Nathan Gale was at that show and tried to get on the stage that night but security pulled him away and as they were dragging his ass out he did lots of damage to the lightning system and soundboard. Not sure if he was armed that night but it's chilling to think what might have happened to us that night. I didn't go to see them when they played in Columbus that fateful night but as soon as they showed a picture of the shooter I was like holy shit it's him. I'm glad Bogarts security that night was able to prevent a possible tragedy.
Talk about a close call. What a terrifying thought. If only Columbus had the security Bogarts had. I believe he entered the venue through a back door?
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 He did go in through the back door at the Columbus show, not sure how he came in at Bogarts but it's hard to get in there through the band entrance it's pretty secure, I just noticed him when they started to tackle him then were dragging him out.
Randy Scouse Git was also a war protest song...
Headquarters is ny favorite Monkees album too!
Was gonna say that Robert Plant nicked his singing style then you brought it up at the end. Great vid
Thank you!
One Of The G.O.A.T 🎸🎵☮️🌎🌏🌍✊
Many thanks for giving Dime the spotlight for a minute 🤘
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Damageplan were scheduled to play in Flint, MI right after that shooting in Ohio, I still remember that, was like in Dec 2004....Great clip Jeff, and series, RIP Dimebag
Thank you! Such a terrible tragedy, I can’t even imagine being a witness to such carnage.
Such a big voice coming out of a little dude
Agreed!
Damn, that was awesome. I grew up in and was living in Columbus at the time, saw many shows at Alrosa Villa and remembered when it happened but knew nothing about Pantera or his story. So tragic. Jeff, this series has been so incredible, great job
Thank you John! Such a sad fate for such a talented and peaceful individual. Not to mention the other unfortunate casualties of that day. I believe they razed the venue some years back?
@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 I'm in Maryland now but I heard it closed in 2021. It was a dive, I worked at RTO Record and Tape Outlet right across from there in the 80s
Unbelievable guitarist,unbelievable band.RIP Abbot bros
Thank you for putting this out, Jeff! Frankly, I was surprised you tackled this… pleasantly surprised. I know these guys aren’t exactly in your wheelhouse. But, you did a fantastic, thorough job! I do have to say, the Phil apology footage is hard to watch. He was obviously pained by the situation… and possibly felt guilty. I’ve witnessed firsthand, at a Superjoint Ritual show in Toledo a couple of years prior, him talking shit about the Abbott brothers on stage. In hindsight, completely uncalled for. But, not an excuse, Phil was smacked out at the time. Overall, Darrell is celebrated and deservingly so. Again, thank you for this video!🤘
Thanks Trevor! I took this on as a challenge since I knew little to nothing about Pantera but was shocked like everyone else when this happened. Reminded me a lot of John Lennon’s murder. l am glad I learned more about Dimebag as a musician and Pantera as a band.
I love I'm broken
He was awesome from such a young age
Totally!
RIP dime a legend
Holy shit is it Christmas. Bad ass
The Who are my favorite band, so I really enjoyed this retrospective. You included so many clips that I have never seen. Fantastic.
Thanks Randall!
thanks for the video, it was interesting to watch!
Steve was a classic case of over-indulgence; the guy was brim-full of talent, but was his own worst enemy, because he had no boundaries and never knew when to draw the line. He absolutely needed someone to hold him in check, like Ronnie Lane in the Small Faces or Peter Frampton in Humble Pie, but unfortunately Marriott always wanted to have his own way and would not listen to anybody. As his career went on he increasingly sang in a high-pitched, hoarse manner which I find very difficult to listen to, in contrast to his earlier vocals which are my favourite performances. Allied to this he (contrary to how he appears) was severely lacking in confidence, so he increasingly turned to drink and drugs which led to his sad decline. With better handling from someone who he trusted, he could have been a mega-star.
That’s very true. If only he had been in more capable hands management wise. And if only he had taken better care of himself. Such a preventable demise.
