  • The Monkees released Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. in late 1967. This record is the second album that The Monkees had more creative control over, and played on, and It's one of their best records.
Great songs, including a few written by Mike Nesmith, just awesome music, perfect vocals by Mickey Dolenz especially...
We've always loved this album and finally, here is our discussion!

The Monkees were absolutely great and yes, I agree that this is their masterpiece. But your ramblings do not do it justice. A track by track discussion would have been helpful in highlighting the song selection, the various composers, the (occasional) session players and the overall music innovation that makes this album a great time capsule of when it was originally released.
Considering that in that particular year, 1967, the Monkees filmed their show, released 3 albums, outsold the Beatles, toured all over America and England as an actual band, and were able to produce such quality on Pieces, Aquarious, Capricorn and Jones, LTD is an amazing accomplishment . Something that unfortunately will never be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The best Monkees albums are Headquarters, Pisces Aquaries and Jones and Birds Bees and the Monkees.

@@statesandkingdoms HE was among first if not first to record and release a track (or 2?) using the Moog. I knew of it at the time due to it's use---early version thereof---in FORBIDDEN PLANET, which Micky referenced overtly on a 60's late night talk show, possibly Carson's. (Joey Bishop's? or...?

Micky was so impressed with his drumming on "The Door Into Summer" but it was not used on the album. It was later redone with "Fast" Eddie Hoh, who was the drummer for the "Mama's and Poppas" and was there at the Monterey Pop Festival. Peter Tork was also there and he emceed for many of the Groups along his great introduction for the "Buffalo Springfield". If you haven't got them album, I would recommend the 4-CD set by Rhino. Lou Rawls blew me away. For classic movies, I would recommed the 1941 movie with Edgar G. Robonsin "The Unholy Partner". 24 minutes into the movie where Edgar G is looking for a Headline. One of them is "Radical Islam must be suppressed" Remember the movie is before Pearl Harbord. And try to find one called "Charlie Chan at the Olympics".

Actually both Micky Dolenz and Eddie Hoh provide separate drum tracks for 'The Door into Summer'. But only Eddie Hoh is credited. The right channel features drumming which continues through the entire track. At the start of the second verse, another drum track begins in the left channel and continues through the rest of the song.

@@c.syde65 Thanks for the information, I thought Micky's drumming was replaced. Here is something fun, Micky was with John Lennon and Harry Nilsson when they got thrown out of the club for lampooning the Smother Brother's. I Am relying on my poor memory, but I know afterwards that John and Harry recorded the "Pussycats" album.

The U.S group The Electric Flag used Moog on the soundtrack to the film "The Trip" in mid 67.

The first use of Moog on record was on the album `The Zodiac, Cosmic Sounds` released by Elektra on May 20 1967. The Doors "Strange Days" album barely made use of it - mostly on one track on Jim Morrisons vocalising. The Byrds in Jan 68 0n "Notorious Byrd Bros" album use it on two tracks "Natural Harmony" and "Space Odyssey".
