This video gave me the confidence to do it myself on a 2000 F-150 XLT 4x4. Feeling proud that I did it using lots of tools inherited from grandpas who have passed on. Upgrading to heavy duty leaf springs with new shackles and bushings has made for a much smoother ride! Tips for those thinking about doing it:
-don’t attempt shackle or hanger replacement without an angle grinder-you’ll likely have at least 1 bolt on each side that will need to be cut out; you might need to cut part of the old shackle too so have fresh cutting wheels
-after U bolts, I found it easier to get the front eye bolt in place 1st then use c-clamp to help line up holes for bolt thru shackle and hanger (make sure you pre-install shackle onto spring with bolt head on frame side of shackle)
-Power Torque brand 6 ton jack stands from Oreilly had plenty of height for this project

@@nickelbraun5360 what did he do wrong?

    • @nickelbraun5360
      @nickelbraun5360 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Cicero First of all he diagnosed it wrong. The only reason he bought the aftermarket leaf springs is because he thought that they were broken. That is ridiculous. Ford Rangers and Mazda B series pick ups along with the Ford Explorer is based on the same chassis were known for broken shackles. Any amount of research on the Internet you could easily find this out. Especially if you own one and think you have knowledge of how to work on cars. Secondly when he took off the tire and remove the leafspring The axles should have had support underneath it. It was hanging by the shock observer and the sway bar. Now because not every pick up has a rear sway bar this could lead to potential he dangerous situations especially in a to Tutorial. The shock absorber cannot be trusted to hold the weight of the axle. In his case it probably would have been fine if there was no sway bar because he’s shocks were newer. But people watching that have a truck like this may not Nice enough shocks. They could easily break and drop the axle on to somebody. Not to mention giving specific torque specifications for what is supposed to be broad tutorial for many vehicles. Someone could also easily watch this video and install the shackle bracket incorrectly. Nowhere in the video does he touch on orientation of the shackle bracket. I have a 1996 Ford Ranger that I did the same exact project on. My shackle brackets were in the opposite direction Of what is shown on the video. If someone installed theirs in the way that is shown in the video but it is supposed to be the opposite it could potentially lead to failure. This is a complex project and there is many more things that he should have covered but he didn’t probably because he didn’t know or think about it. This is why I do not like him. He claims that he knows all of it but if you watch his videos with any amount of knowledge about the subject you can easily find his flaws. I am not a person who would care if he just did it to his own vehicle. You can go ahead and make your own mistakes on your own vehicle. But you should not be putting out tutorials if you don’t have any idea what you’re doing to begin with.

technically rust isn't so much the salt, it's more so undried water and salt creating a solution on the metal of the vehicle's frame. Not saying this is Chris's fault but usually it's when you don't wash your vehicle thoroughly after the winter months and that salt becomes damp from road water in the rainy months and it rusts the metal frame. Again this is most likely NOT Chris's fault since we know his love of cleanliness this was probably pre-existing but it's best to watch your vehicle even in non snowy states. California actually has BAD salt issues especially for those on the beach, the salt water on the breeze eats through the paint of vehicles and destroys them

Hey Chris, I followed this guide to change my leaf springs, shackles, and mounts on both sides of my truck. Saved myself 2000 bucks that I was quoted at a shop for this job. Thanks to you!!
The one thing that was a pain was getting the forward mount installed on the gas tank side without dropping the gas tank. I did manage to get it done however by using a string to pull the bolts through the hole backwards, then using a pair of vice grips on the tip of the bolt that is not threaded as I tightened the nut down, that way I didn't need access to the space between the frame and the gas tank to hold the bolt by the head.

These videos are very well produced and edited. I recently referenced ChrisFix for replacing the u-joints on my 2002 GMC Sonoma. Only surprise I ran into once the u-joints were out were the Double Cardan joints on the Sonoma. The CV ball seat in the centre of the Cardan was worn out. Luckily I was able to source the CV Ball Seat Kit locally (at twice the price! Moog part 606)and get the driveshaft back on the truck. I like that the videos are organized and straight to the point. No unnecessary "rambling on". All tools and equipment required are tidily arranged and in view. Very easy to follow the steps and reference the video by using the Pause button. Next time I'm under the truck I'll check my leafsprings. Thanks Chris.

Dude, back in the day, 1984 to be exact, I was driving my Dads 1972 GMC Custom half ton pickup truck home from work. I started hearing a ting, ting, ting behind me and when I looked in my rearview mirror I saw a 12 inch piece of steel bouncing end over end behind me. When I inspected it more I realized that that was a sizable chunk of the leaf spring that had fallen off. I started calling several local salvage yards and was only able to find springs that had come off a farm grain truck. You know, one of those that can haul a tremendous amount of weight out of a field after getting grain harvested. I was assured that these would fit on my half ton pickup truck, only cost me $50.00, and another $50.00 charge (labor and parts) to get the springs installed. The lift was TREMENDOUS! Over 8 inches of lift!!!

While you're under there, check your gas tank straps!! My truck is just like yours ('96 Ford Ranger). Had one tank strap rust apart on the Interstate. Had to limp home and replace it. Maybe for another video?

I saw in my notifications ChrisFix had a new video out. But i had to finish studying for 2 advanced abstract math exams. Now that they're over with, LET THE CHRISFIX BINGE BEGIN!

Caution with the rubberized undercoating - when it develops holes, it will actually trap the salinated water and it will rust from the inside out.
It’s probably better to finish painting and then apply POR-15, regularly apply fluid film, or take the car in for a yearly undercarriage oil spray.

THIS ⬆️ when I bought a Wrangler and was looking to undercoat, everyone told me about this and I was disappointed to see Chris recommend rubberized undercoating over fluid film

Agreed. I bought an F150 that the PO rubberized the entire frame and floor of the cab on in 2004. It's now 2022 and the entire frame has rusted. The rubberized coating trapped in moisture and it's just completely rusted under there. It's not even stuck to the frame anymore and it's just peeling off in chunks. The floor of the cab is literally gone. I have to get a new cab and I am completely stripping the frame, painting it with POR15 and I will undercoat with Fluid Film. Never using Rubberized undercoating.

por 15 is uv sensitive. most people are probably doing this in their driveway. I would say to use whatever rust converter and then use the fluid film on top/oil film.

@@herculesbrah To do POR15 properly you have to top coat it while it's still tacky. I use Rustoleum Gloss black, it turns rock hard and protects against UV.

Starting to resto our 87 Toyota pickup, I've realized again how awesome Kroil oil is for rusty hardware. After becoming paranoid about getting the rear end out of wack and watching tons of videos.....yours popped up and was exactly what I needed. Chrisfx vids are the best, always.
