A couple of things worth mentioning, learnt when rewiring my boat: 1. The primary choice of fuse does not depend on the load you intend to connect. The wire is chosen to be able to support the intended load and connection distance, then the fuse is chosen to have an equal or lower current capacity as the wire. If the fuse is rated higher than the cable, a short is likely to end in a fire. 2. The wire needs to be multistrand as you have used, never use solid core wire eg intended for a house, vibration will break it. 3. When the solder connection is shown in the cideo, a difference between the LED tail and the wire for the run to the battery on the right is visible: left = silver (presoldered), the right shows bare copper. Presoldered is chosen by the led manufacturer because it does not corrode. I have not yet found a “waterproof” connection which remains just that in boats and cars.

Two notes: 1. I would strongly recommend testing before zip-tying everything and reassembling the tail light. (put fuse in, test, pull fuse out again, tidy up, put fuse back in, test again) 2. I would put the switches on the positive side, so that the LED tape goes straight to "ground" on the negative side. This way, if something shorts out along the way, it's more likely the lights will be stuck off, rather than stuck on.

Hey Chris, I just wanted to share a couple of suggestions which may help you for future. I have been doing electrical wiring in vehicles for 30 years so plenty of experience. I've also fixed a lot of other peoples problematic wiring issues. You do a pretty good job, however a couple of important things caught my eye. Using marine wire, which is tinned from factory would help with any corrosion issues. Secondly the ground wire at the back wrapped around a bolt without even using a connector made me cringe. If you are going to go through the trouble of running a wire from the battery, run power & ground, that way you are making a good solid connection at the same location, and you are creating a loop between the battery and the device. A bad ground will cause lots of problems down the road. Marine grade epoxy heat shrink connectors will save you the step of using the dielectric grease. One more suggestion is to run the wire from the battery back towards the cab, then across the firewall and down. I'm certain your videos will help a lot of folks. You might want to look into Power Probe's soldering guns and torches. They will make your life so much easier.
I’m confused, I ran my lights just like he said and connected it just like he said, my lights come on, but are not bright anymore, connections seem solid, but do i need to install a relay somewhere after the fuse wire off the positive battery side?
I thought everything Chris done was perfect, except for mounting the ground. So then I came to the comment section to see who agreed. I also put No-Ox-Id on my connections before I crimp. I love Chris's videos....

No questions about Chris’s talent but I think it’s better and quicker to attach the positive wire to the rear parking light. You don’t need bunch of wires nor wire cover and the labor to run it from battery at front to all the way to the trunk gate. Don’t need the on off switch, just mount the magnetic switch is all it needs. The drawback is the parking light needs turned on before opening the trunk. In some vehicles has constant positive feed to rear brake lights, then all we need is a photocell switch. Thank Chris for countless time from making these videos helping out many diy newbies including me. I do appreciate your resilience.
Just a small tip from an electrician. The next time you need to hook up a ground I would advise to crimp a large connector washer (eyelet perhaps in your country?) to the ground wire. I have a feeling that those threads nicked the copper enough for it to pop off from vibrations one day. Usually the ground is the most important as a good ground connection can also nake sure your fuse does blow when you need it to blow the most. Everything else was great!
Hey! I did it! I installed my own LED's in the back of my ute. I followed your advice and instructions and managed to get it done for about $80. The toughest part for me was running the conduit and wire under the body of the vehicle. That was a challenge but I got there in the end. A little bit nerving when I had to drill the hole for the button switch but it worked out fine in the end. Thanks for all your tips and advice. It really did help to make it a good secure fitment. Much appreciated!
@@devonburkhalter9840 I initially did try the strongest double sided adhesive tape I could find and washed the surfaces down with methylated spirits but in the heat of summer it just didn’t hold. Literally melted away. In the end I removed all the tape, which was a real pain in the ass and put dabs of silicone to hold the lights on. So far so good. They haven’t come off.

Hey chrisfix, Since im an electronics engineer, i have some suggestions. 1. if the magnet fails and you are Parked, your battery will be dead within a few hours, this is especialy bad if you are for example parked at an airport. I think a good solution would be to either wire it ti the ignition or use a timer relay, that will shut it of lets say 15 minutes after the ignition has been turned off. Another idea would be to wire it to the unlocking mechanism, so the led's will only go on, if your car is unlocked (i think this would be the best way) 2. Tell your community to wait like maybe a minute after cleaning the surface with the alcohol, beacause if you directly apply any kind of glue (for example the stick tape) the alcohol will actually dissolve the glue in it, so it will maybe stick for a week until it falls of. 3. if you wanna properly solder 2 wires together, do it the following way: 1.) strip both wires to about 10mm 2.) twist both wires, so they are as compact as possible 3.) pretin both wires (just enough that you can see them turn silver) 4.) DONT FORGET TO ADD TE HEATSHRINKS (trust me, i had to solder an entire BUS together. After i soldered 125, YES 125 wires to one another i realised i forgot the heatshrinks) 5.) attach the wires to the "helping arms" and put the stripped and pretinned wires SIDE BY SIDE (so they touch each other) 6.) heat both wires and use some more solder to get a strong connection 7.) put the heatshrink over the solder joint and heat it with the heatgun or a lighter. 8.) Boom, Profit I hope i could help you, and stay as you are. I love your Videos and i got a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer from my grandfather so i need your videos :)
Chris, thank you so much for this! My 17 year old and I had a great time together installing these lights in my truck. We went with the water proof 5630 LED tape. I am not sure how long the 3M tape will last but have a backup plan if it fails over time. Keep the awesome videos coming, it’s great for my son who needs to learn how to service his car. Wow to drive from Canada just to install lights, I wish my friends would do this. We live in the same building and they can’t even walk down the stairs to return things they borrowed from me.
Couple tips.. from someone who's installed thousands of those magnetic switches professionally over the last 15 years.. that factory double sided tape will not last long at all with the weather. Also, when using a relay (switch) to break power, ALWAYS break the positive leg instead of the negative.
little tip- you could find an unused fuse in the fusebox that gets power when the truck is off, then put an undervolt-protection circuit on it so it cuts out if the truck's battery voltage gets too low. This is pretty common practice for things like dashcams :P only difficulty is getting it from internal to external, unless you have a free fuse in the enginebay fusebox.

Tip: heating the tip of screw driver with a lighter makes it easier and cleaner to push it through the plastic bed liner. That wiring diagram is top notch!

I have a ramp van and wanting to put lights on the ramp so that when it opens the lights automatically come on and turn off when the ramp goes back up. Today is November 11, 2020. As a subscriber, I have no idea how I missed this video back in January! I just replaced my old vinyl tonneau cover with a hard, Bak Flip MX4 cover. Once that was done, I couldn't wait to tackle this project! I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra with the OEM bed rail system. I also have a sprayed in factory bedliner. I decided to run the led strip under the rails. I used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the surfaces but also ran the 3M high bonding tape all the way around, just to make sure the LED's would stay stuck. The more difficult part was figuring out the wiring on the switch as the wires are different colors than yours, Chris. It didn't take long to figure that out and I felt tremendous satisfaction when the whole install was complete! It looks amazing and works perfectly! The only issue I have is the LED strips were beginning to sag on the ends of the rails I attached them to so to solve that, I wrapped each of the rail ends with a black zip tie. So far, nothing seems to be sagging! Thanks again Chris for another educational, fun project!

Don't forget, that wire size directly dictates how many amps can travel through the wire itself. Oversizing a fuse is dangerous. Oversizing leads to the fuse, a over current protection device, to be utterly useless if it exceeds the amp limit on the wiring leading to and away from it. You can get away with a few extra amps when sizing up, but always be cautious when doing so. If it's an old circuit it may have already been stepped up...and now your entering a danger zone. For more clarification on amp to wire size always reference the National Electric Code. Also know as the NEC. A quick Google search can save you your ride and possibly your life. Great video Chris!
@@jarrettc.4417 That gauge of wire can't handle anything close to 50A (probably 20A-30A max, and that's pushing it), and would result in the wire more than likely catching fire in the event of a short. Basically the wire would behave as if there were no inline fuse, and it was connected directly to the battery.
Same here, just watching a video on installing leds when I very much know how to install leds considering I put 34 of them on my truck along with a strobe module and relay for running lights lmao. I did skip the wire loom rule tho... Something about running loom along 6 different wiring harnesses adding up to 100+ feet of wire with over 70-80 connectors on them turned me off to that idea.

I can't be the only one irked that he did the whole job clean as hell then just threaded a bolt over a bare wire for the ground instead of a ring terminal, etc.
I was watching on my tv and had to visit the TH-cam app on my iPad just to read the comments after I saw it. There were a few other iffy parts but that bolt threaded over bare wire was too much.
Would really appreciate a hardwiring tutorial from the legend himself, there aren’t much in depth videos that explain this topic well on the internet and it can be a game changer since installation for electric mods on vehicles are very expensive I wanted to install an ambient lighting kit on my car which cost me 60 bucks but the installation in my local shop is 1000 bucks

Just a small tip from an electrician. The next time you need to hook up a ground I would advise to crimp a large connector washer (eyelet perhaps in your country?) to the ground wire. I have a feeling that those threads nicked the copper enough for it to pop off from vibrations one day. Usually the ground is the most important as a good ground connection can also nake sure your fuse does blow when you need it to blow the most. Everything else was great!

Hey! I did it! I installed my own LED's in the back of my ute. I followed your advice and instructions and managed to get it done for about $80. The toughest part for me was running the conduit and wire under the body of the vehicle. That was a challenge but I got there in the end. A little bit nerving when I had to drill the hole for the button switch but it worked out fine in the end. Thanks for all your tips and advice. It really did help to make it a good secure fitment. Much appreciated!

What adhesive did you use? How has it held up so far?
@@devonburkhalter9840 I initially did try the strongest double sided adhesive tape I could find and washed the surfaces down with methylated spirits but in the heat of summer it just didn’t hold. Literally melted away. In the end I removed all the tape, which was a real pain in the ass and put dabs of silicone to hold the lights on. So far so good. They haven’t come off.

Hey chrisfix,
Since im an electronics engineer, i have some suggestions.
1. if the magnet fails and you are Parked, your battery will be dead within a few hours, this is especialy bad if you are for example parked at an airport. I think a good solution would be to either wire it ti the ignition or use a timer relay, that will shut it of lets say 15 minutes after the ignition has been turned off. Another idea would be to wire it to the unlocking mechanism, so the led's will only go on, if your car is unlocked (i think this would be the best way)
2. Tell your community to wait like maybe a minute after cleaning the surface with the alcohol, beacause if you directly apply any kind of glue (for example the stick tape) the alcohol will actually dissolve the glue in it, so it will maybe stick for a week until it falls of.
3. if you wanna properly solder 2 wires together, do it the following way:
1.) strip both wires to about 10mm
2.) twist both wires, so they are as compact as possible
3.) pretin both wires (just enough that you can see them turn silver)
4.) DONT FORGET TO ADD TE HEATSHRINKS (trust me, i had to solder an entire BUS together. After i soldered 125, YES 125 wires to one another i realised i forgot the heatshrinks)
5.) attach the wires to the "helping arms" and put the stripped and pretinned wires SIDE BY SIDE (so they touch each other)
6.) heat both wires and use some more solder to get a strong connection
7.) put the heatshrink over the solder joint and heat it with the heatgun or a lighter.
8.) Boom, Profit

Chris, thank you so much for this! My 17 year old and I had a great time together installing these lights in my truck. We went with the water proof 5630 LED tape. I am not sure how long the 3M tape will last but have a backup plan if it fails over time. Keep the awesome videos coming, it’s great for my son who needs to learn how to service his car. Couple tips.. from someone who's installed thousands of those magnetic switches professionally over the last 15 years.. that factory double sided tape will not last long at all with the weather.
Also, when using a relay (switch) to break power, ALWAYS break the positive leg instead of the negative.
I will say, this has got to be one of the best wiring tutorial I’ve seen. Exceptionally done. New sub now.

little tip- you could find an unused fuse in the fusebox that gets power when the truck is off, then put an undervolt-protection circuit on it so it cuts out if the truck's battery voltage gets too low. This is pretty common practice for things like dashcams :P only difficulty is getting it from internal to external, unless you have a free fuse in the enginebay fusebox.

As a subscriber, I have no idea how I missed this video back in January!
I just replaced my old vinyl tonneau cover with a hard, Bak Flip MX4 cover.
Once that was done, I couldn't wait to tackle this project!
I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra with the OEM bed rail system.
I also have a sprayed in factory bedliner.
I decided to run the led strip under the rails.
I used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the surfaces but also ran the 3M high bonding tape all the way around, just to make sure the LED's would stay stuck.
The more difficult part was figuring out the wiring on the switch as the wires are different colors than yours, Chris.
It didn't take long to figure that out and I felt tremendous satisfaction when the whole install was complete!
It looks amazing and works perfectly!
The only issue I have is the LED strips were beginning to sag on the ends of the rails I attached them to so to solve that, I wrapped each of the rail ends with a black zip tie.
So far, nothing seems to be sagging!

Don't forget, that wire size directly dictates how many amps can travel through the wire itself. Oversizing a fuse is dangerous. Oversizing leads to the fuse, a over current protection device, to be utterly useless if it exceeds the amp limit on the wiring leading to and away from it. You can get away with a few extra amps when sizing up, but always be cautious when doing so. If it's an old circuit it may have already been stepped up...and now your entering a danger zone. For more clarification on amp to wire size always reference the National Electric Code. Also know as the NEC. A quick Google search can save you your ride and possibly your life.

@@jarrettc.4417 That gauge of wire can't handle anything close to 50A (probably 20A-30A max, and that's pushing it), and would result in the wire more than likely catching fire in the event of a short. Basically the wire would behave as if there were no inline fuse, and it was connected directly to the battery.

Same here, just watching a video on installing leds when I very much know how to install leds considering I put 34 of them on my truck along with a strobe module and relay for running lights lmao.
I did skip the wire loom rule tho... Something about running loom along 6 different wiring harnesses adding up to 100+ feet of wire with over 70-80 connectors on them turned me off to that idea.
Got this done today and I am LOVING it! My switch was a little different, but I was able to work it out and it works like a champ! Thanks a million for this.

Would really appreciate a hardwiring tutorial from the legend himself, there aren’t much in depth videos that explain this topic well on the internet and it can be a game changer since installation for electric mods on vehicles are very expensive
