Note: We noted to Sony that the 1-inch sensor only utilizes 12 MP from the available 20MP. I usually don't say this but I want to see a full in depth video of this on LTT. This phone truly deserves the 'PRO' moniker unlike so many others. Add in a little comparo with others and that would be a good watch!

I believe it should still be the same as other phones since the aperture is less and I heard on some reviews they don't actually use the entire 1" of the sensor (only about 1/1.33"), but the amount of control you can get from this sensor software wise makes it better

I feel like I learn something every time, and I really like the expertise & experience fueling his perspective. I’d love to see a multi-flagship comparison hosted by Brandon, but focused around the cameras & camera apps/features.
As an avid hobby photographer, I love these videos because they inspire others to try out the art form more seriously than they do at the moment. Plus it's interesting to see how a phone can perform when given great tools like Sony has done here
It's so fun watching people geek out over "new" technology. I don't even care for high end phones or cameras, but this video is fun either way, purely cause of how hyped he and the crew is.

This looks SO cool. I’m stuck in the apple ecosystem, but this is truly revolutionary to me. Imagine if apple started making actual DSLR cameras and dumped that RnD into iPhone instead of always playing that miniaturization game

@@awesomestuff9715 They absolutely could do a main video with it. The content of their videos is mainly why they are popular. Of course, it largely wouldn't be as practical to use (would like also overheat at some point) and the actual video quality does matter.
The reason it's digital zoom while zooming is that the telephoto lens is disabled on pre-production models, but when the phone is released that slider will switch from telephoto to wide.
I love that the micro sd is toolless if you’re actually going to use this as a camera and move the photos over to a pc that will be a godsend I just hope it doesn’t get loose if it’s a friction fit tray.

@@pgsanta yea I was wondering if the equipped lens on the phone can even cover the whole 1-inch sensor ... because if not then its cropped ... and if its cropped then its pointless because the effective sensor size is gonna be roughly the same as any other major smartphone competitor (depending on how cropped it is). In theory if they really are using the full 1-inch sensor then yes its a big deal, but I'm suspicious that its not really using it all and its in fact cropped.
Compared to the others the Xperia looks much more natural and less processed and the unfocused background is much more _real_ looking. Its hard to explain since I don't know anything about cameras.
Optical vs. digital bokeh. Other phones use digital blurring, but lenses blur things differently where they round off points of light instead of the typical gaussian blur that is common in the digital realm. Emulating the optical blur from a camera lens is actually quite difficult to do, hence why most smartphones still struggle with it.
@@CockatooDude Yeah, and digital blurring really requires more sophisticated machine learning tk determine the objects to remain focus while actually trying to make it seems more natural. And sometimes it still fails especially with fine objects to seperate, like hairs for example. Many of the digital blurs just looks unnatural, as if somebody did a Photoshop on them. Optical blurring of course don't suffer with these issues, since it's all natural physics at play.

This phone is so unique and fresh compared to other models launched in the last years that it definitely deserves a more in depth review. This is the type of device that gets me excited and not just the slight spec bumps we've been getting on other devices.
Look at the sharp aquos R6 - it's a phone with a 1" sensor that actually uses the full area. It's a wider lens (19mm eq.), but cropped in to the same FoV as the X pro-I it's identical (same area of the sensor, and f/1.9 Vs f/2). It's likely also a sony sensor from the RX100 series, although probably not stacked as it's not mentioned in the marketing. Unfortunately it's only on sale in japan, but I'm sure LTT could get their hands on one. Also, for the pro-I price, an RX100 VA and xperia 5 iii is only a little bit more expensive but would give a far superior photography experience

The fact that you can preserve all 120fps and can benifit it while editing in PC is just insane. And amount of data it preserve for you to play around is really like a CAMERA and not phone!
I would like call it as a part of real camera benefits guys who film video by their own Without any assistance. It`s a solution between phone and cameras, better than normal smartphone with Sony Edgexxx APP installed.
Thoughts on the photos of the LEGO MSI Dragon: relative to each other viewing on a 12 Pro Max, the iPhone looks over saturated, the Pixel looks kinda dead, and the Sony look the best. Looks natural and not over sharpened.
I was actually surprised how over saturated the iPhone was, esp compared to the pixel. I would’ve expected the exact opposite tbh (went from P4XL to 12 Pro, so I’m familiar with the processing on both phones pics)
@@2turntalert that is what happens when it's next to more natural and high quality image from Xperia, the smaller sensor was affecting the dynamic range and low light performance. I think the Xperia camera will improve the most as we head into the future. Computational photography helped alot during a time when smart phone cameras and sensors were bad. Now the quality of pro cameras with better sensor will have better results. It take skills too but thats the challenge. Its like having super car, it's a challenge to drive
Iphone: Oversaturated Pixel: Undersaturated Sony: you can see the details such as the "translucency" of the legos. It loooks way better (particularly look at the top of the legos and how the lighting goes through it)

Yep. Other phones like a Leica which is based on a Sharp is actually using a whole 1'' sensor, so the Sony is neither a true 1'' sensor phone nor the first with such a sensor. At least it takes good pictures
@@or2kr It is still a true 1" sensor, but the utilized portion is not the whole 1" area. Regardless, the effects of having a 1" sensor is still pronounced with the greater depth of field, better native dynamic range, and stronger light sensitivity due to larger pixels.
Imagine in 5 years being able to buy a somewhat reasonably priced folding phone with features like this? We're finally seeing major innovation in smartphones for the first time in a decade and I'm excited.
Oh I expect a $1500 Galaxy Zfold 7 or Zfold Note* to have a 64MP version of this by 2025. Probably with an integrated gimbal like on the X70 Pro+ and separate telephoto camera with 10-15X zoom as well. *or Znote Tab if the display extends out to 9-10 inches?
I just realized that Sony is one step ahead in like every catagory with these super cool specs that just they can do. But the reason they aren't making so much space and everyone isn't talking about them that much, is because they suck at marketing.
And they suck at everything really. Specs stopped being important about 5 years ago. And btw this has a "1 inch sensor" but the lens cover is too small so basically the usable sensor is the same size as the one in the S21 ultra. Full of stupidity 😂😂
I love what Sony is doing with their phones. I take many thousands of photos of photos each year and the vast majority of those happen with my phone because I can carry that anywhere whereas I have to tediously plan, pack, and then pull out a full body camera but then I can miss the moment. To me having a physical and textured button dedicated to a camera is a huge deal for me that a lot of "flagship" (ie really try hard cheap and dare I say POS) phones skimp out on and they often have issues with software failures and navigation delays that frankly take about as long for me to pull out a full body camera from a sling bag. So that and not mention an actual, no dangly dongle required, soup to nuts headphone jack make this phone actually worth something because it does something. Way to go Sony, no keep up the good work but I hope you can also bring features like this to a more mid market price because $1,800 is a large pill to swallow if it doesn't last 5 years.
Yea. That. Some people have a huge boner for it. Mostly Fuji and Panasonic users. Can definitely get the job done and even has some benefits over FF...faster sensor readout, for example. But overall, it's true. The larger the sensor, the better in a lot of ways...to a point of course. FF is a very nice sweet spot in most ways.

It's very cool but when you consider the battery and heat limitations, and the price, maybe it's better to just buy a separate camera and phone. But if you can afford to splash the cash,.having the convenience of such a nice camera on your phone would be pretty awesome.

Except not. Like Peter already said, the Xperia Pro-I can only use about 60% of its sensor. The "real" size is only about 1/1.3" which is identical to what the S21 Ultra and Pixel 6 are using. And even if it was the full sensor, it just isn't true anymore that this would be 4-6 times bigger than other smartphones. Even cheap midrange phones these days have 1/2" sensors and flagships are about 1/1.3" - 1/1.5".

The Sony haters are out in full power. It has faster image capture by far than the pixel and since it's treated as an actual camera can outperform any smart phone right now if you want specific shots. If you want a point and shoot, this definitely isn't the phone for you, but if you're interested in photography, this is an actual pro phone
Sony seems to be the only manufacturer out there, that puts tech into the device to push the industry forward, rather than flex on competition, while also stalling as much as realistically possible, just to juice more money over incremental upgrades. Really hope the software, as well as customer support for this device hold up over the years

@@dafaqu694 guess I should have worded that a bit better... short story is; I slipped at work and hit my leg against a work truck flat bed and just happened to be right at an angle where the phone was in the worst spot.
I’m almost more blown away by the fact that it has a mechanical aperture than I am by the sensor size! Crazy how they’ve pulled all of this off without increasing the thickness beyond typical camera bump levels. This bodes extremely well for the future of phone photography and is a bit of a breakthrough imo.
Why is every reviewer not mentioning the fact that it doesn't use the full 1 inch sensor. Like yes it's a one inch sensor but the lens itself is only using a portion of it. The sensor in 20mp and it's cropping into the 12mp section.
But while it isn't using all of the sensor, it's still an engineering feat to fit the whole sensor in there and still maintain that ultra slim form factor. Other phones are nearly double the thickness with much smaller sensors and similar battery sizes (Sony's is 4.5k mah). It sort of gives us hope for the future since now we know it definitely is possible to fit not only a 1inch sensor, a really really great one that has been tried and tested with the rx100 series.
Sony is back baby! Glad to see they have finally figured out how they can bring something different to the smartphone market that's actually new and exciting, and how to get people talking about it

Marvellous camera phone, unbeatable in every sense with minor tweaks I sincerely hope that SONY will upgrade this phone and Xperia 1iii by : A) Utilities Variable fast apature to cover the entire "20mp 1 inch sensor" even if it takes to increase the bump, please Sony. B) Double up that shutter switch as one button recording is emergency cases & also photo journalism scenarios. I hope Sony does few adjustment/upgrade with upcoming pro i2 or xperia 1 iii iv and surly takes the Crown in smart phones industry.
please please please do a full review on it, all functionality (inclusive of actual phone capability), and show how it links up with the Sony cameras! :)

It's a functional actually pocketable back up camera to your dslr. The camera form of this sensor is priced at 1200, the smartphone form is at 1800. So extra 600 toget the smartphone innards
@@hailgod1 Well 1200 but you can't make calls from an RX100 nor can you browse lttstore or watch TH-cam from it plus the xperia doubles as a monitor for the big rig, so that's I guess what the extra price is for in their thinking. Again, the people it's oriented for are not known for cheaping out so even though you probably can buy a better smartphone (with worse camera) plus an RX100 they're not gonna do it given the option. I kinda understand this logic, I'd rather take a phone with very good camera over a pocket shooter for convenience and not looking like an idiot by using a pocket shooter in 2021, but if I had to use it as a monitor I'd be concerned about losing the ability to use a smartphone. But then again I'm a broke a$sh0le so this product isn't for me.
The variable aperture was one of the features that samsung introduced with their s9/note 9 series phones and discontinued when they released s20 series.
I would love to see this reviewed from a photographers perspective, instead of comparing the phones based on random images in different kinds of lighting it would be great to see how they handle various types of shooting scenarios like landscape, street, portrait etc... essentially using the full range of features to accurately represent the creative vision of the photographer.

Yes and no. In the pro space, much of the money you spend is on how the camera handles. If a camera is easy to set up the exact shot you want, it might be preferred over better iq but difficult to use, or more automatic. And a lower iq, but a more flexible codec would be preferable. Especially with respect to video. In most "pro" situations, absolute iq doesnt really matter. It's flexibility, speed, and reliability that really matter. Edit: I don't know which one of these cameras does what better than the other, I'm not advocating for any of them. I'm just saying that it isn't necessarily the results (absolute iq) that matter. Unless you didn't mean iq, but it sure seems that way.
Sony images are a bit fall behind in case of computational processing, but produce better RAW images. If ur pros the manual control will be very usefull and those images can be post edited later and the result is on another level. At least that's what I know from other pros reviewing this phone, xd
@@kuroko22 They fall behind in computational photography because it is against their science of natural images that the Alpha cameras are well-known for. They always emphasize that the Xperia cameras are built upon the technologies incorporated in their Alpha mirrorless cameras, and that the Alpha camera engineers also designed the cameras of Xperias, so it is no surprise that Xperia cameras also work and should be used like an Alpha camera, and even down to the image processing, the rendition is very similar to Alphas. If they really intended to compete in the same battlefield where Apple, Samsung, and Google are dominating, then they could've easily done that, but they instead took a different approach with their phones, and that one is something that is similar to what LG did in the past with their V series.

I would love to see a 30-60min comparison video of the 3 phones and some professional DSLR cameras. As well as long term usage in terms of heat and battery life for the phone.

I would love a full review on this phone to see more of the other specs, cause for this price, this would have to be good enough on other aspects to be a daily driver as well. It would be fun to see a comparison to other smartphones or even dslr cameras! Very curious to see how it behaves on night shots, and videos using heavily the stabilization and microphone
If there is an in depth video: I'd love to know the time it takes before it overheats; if it does. Also check how long it takes to overheat between different resolutions and fps. I'd also love a lot more comparisons because while Sony puts really good lenses on their phones, their software is a bit lacking compared to Apple and Google. That said, I think in the last year it sounds like Sony stepped up their game on the software so it might not be as much of an issue now. Finally I'd like general battery life with moderate camera/video use. Thanks! I currently have a Xperia XZ2 compact and after about 20-25 minutes of 1080p 30fps recording it will shut off the recording to avoid overheating. It does give warnings (and I think noises but I almost always have my phone on vibrate) but it is a bit annoying to wait 5-10 minutes for it to cool back down. The shutter button Sony puts on their phones is just the best feature for me on my phone. No tapping or sliding to grab a quick photo/video in the moment; just a quick button press and my phone is in camera mode before it leaves my pocket. And the auto focus when you half press the shutter button is another amazing feature I love. It really amazes me how cameras are marketed so much and yet there are hardly any other manufacturers that have a dedicated camera button; you're best luck is remapping a button on an android phone. My only hope is that Sony is still around and making phones when I'm looking to upgrade; although I'd say this phone is extremely tempting and I could see Sony giving a good discount in a couple months or half a year after it releases. Edit: Unless the news has changed since I heard this: I think Sony has only guaranteed 1 year of updates for the Xperia 1 III. So while Sony is pretty big with supporting device configurations on AOSP - this means if you are willing to put in some work you can update the phone yourself - I'd like to see how long Sony states they will supply Android updates or at least security updates. Just something to consider for folks interested in buying this phone.
Security updates aside, I'd like to point out that for the apps that I use anyways, android versions tend to be supported for years longer than their ios counterparts. You would be losing out on security updates getting a phone like this though. But I think sony did commit to at least 2 android os updates.
YES. An in depth video between the 3 would be very nice. But don't forget to make an auto and cinema graded version as well. Those are important features.
It still bothers me that Sony is calling this a 1” sensor smartphone while only center 60% of the pixels on the sensor is used (12MP on Pro-I vs 20MP on RX100). Call this “same sensor as RX100” is technically correct, but calling it 1” is misleading in my dictionary.
Absolutely this. I'd pay $1799 for a full rx100 vii in a phone. But the sensor is cropped to about the same as the Pixel 6, so that's a really hard sell for that much money.
Funny enough, Sony isn't even calling it an 1" sensor. Only all these people here are yelling this all the time without even reading and listening to what Sony says. They're calling it s "type 1.0 sensor" , not 1".
But that's much easier said than done. There's probably a reason why it's only F2 and not even like F1.8 or F1.6. F1.4 is completely unheard of in a smartphones - which also probably has reasons.
@@Raja995mh33 I would happily put up with a 20mm thick smartphone, as long as it was flush mount, maybe that extra space could be used for a 5000AH battery, a full sized push-push style SD card slot (in addition to the microSD card slot), and maybe even two USB-C ports, one for power, and one for two way power, video, and USB, for controlling an external camera while providing pass through power from a battery bank.
@@denvera1g1 No you wouldn't. You pretty much never used such a thick phone so you can say everything. I'm 100% sure as soon as you would actually use such a thick phone (that would also be at least 400g), you would not like to use it AT ALL. All Smartphone companies know why they make phones the thickness they are and compromised it with thicker camera bumps etc for reasons. And that's not because they want phones to be as thin as possible because this trend is entirely dead for years. They're doing it because otherwise these phone would not be comfortable to use even after a short period of time.
@@Raja995mh33 Thenks for reminding me that people have different view points and needs, i hope you came away with the same sense of enlightenment My first phone was 22mm thick. and the camera this sensor came from just happens to be about the same dimentions and weight, yet hundreds of thousands of people use this camera, I personally find it uncomfrtably small, the same as ALL of my phones except for those old Nokia phone bricks, always too slim to grip comfortably
I doubt sony smartphones sell that well but I love that they always try to innovate or push something into the next level... kind of what lg used to be before but hey! it's always welcome that people can have more options.

No it is not BS. What matters in this case is the pixel pitch. The lens does project an image smaller than the whole sensor which is why it's 12MP and not 20MP like an RX100 with the same type of sensor. That doesn't affect image quality, just resolution. The pixel pitch on the Xperia is 2.4μm while on the Pixel 6 Pro it's 1.12μm
@@veryboringname. of course the pixel 6 would have smaller pitch. It's got a 50 megapixel sensor. The sony would have the same 2.4 um pixel pitch if it were an actual 1/1.31" sensor at 12MP. It is completely irrelevant where the sensor came from. Would it be fair to advertise, for instance, a phone as having a full frame sensor, even though a miniscule portion of it is actually used, just because the pixel pitch matches?
@@veryboringname. that's like putting a m4/3 lens on a full frame sensor and then crop just the m4/3 portion of the photo and brag thats "full frame". It obviously isnt. If you arent using the full sensor, you arent getting any advantage of the extra sensor size you arent using.
@@cbflazaro That's a good point, but only if you don't consider the other benefits of that sensor. Sony's 1.0-type sensors have been known to be good performers (dynamic range, color depth, noise etc). Only using a portion of that sensor still gives you the same dynamic range, color depth, noise etc of the sensor - you just get fewer megapixels. And as we all know, image quality isn't all about megapixels. I think the issue is (of course) viewpoints. Some people see "this phone uses a 1.0-type sensor" and expect it to mean "this phone uses the entire surface area of a 1.0-type sensor". That was my original assumption of course, but when I thought about it, it's giving the exact same image quality (dynamic range, color depth, noise) as if it did use the whole surface area of the sensor, just at 12MP instead of 20MP, so I was fine with it.
Considering how much of the sensor isn't used, I wonder if this 1 inch sensor is a throw out from the RX100 that has like bad pixels along the outer edges and sony is just cheating with the "1 inch sensor" advertising. With that said, let's see a full review! And maybe a full episode of short circuit shot using this!
The interesting point is that Sony actually isn't lying in their marketing. Sony actually says not a single time that it's a 1" sensor. They always say that it's a "type 1.0 sensor from the RX100". But people are just not reading correctly...
This is not some kind of Chinese move where Sony will use sub-par quality components on their products, especially a $1800 one. They have always used super high quality parts, and as a result, Xperias are among the least maintenance smartphones. Also, the sensor is intentionally cropped in order to maintain a relatively small camera bump and to increase the sensor's readout speed, all while still having the benefits of using a 1" sensor like greater light sensitivity and wider dynamic range. After all, it's safe to say that a 12MP cropped output from 20MP is still better than native 12MP output. Sony did *NOT* lie about the 1" sensor size because the physical hardware is really there, just not used the usual way.
@@troy5568 I mostly agree with you but one thing to note, Nvidia put 4gb of vram on the GTX 970 graphics card but it became infamous when it came out that last 512mb was connected using a slower implementation and the uproar over that led to a class action lawsuit. It was there, but just not used the usual way (as you said), but that didn't stop the public from punishing the company for doing so.

I'm 2 minutes in and wow, that's a lot of referring to a "one-inch sensor" without explaining what a "one-inch sensor" is and what its actual physical properties are.
I would expect an LMG video to point out that the sensor is yes 1 inch but the actual area of the sensor used is about the same size as something in the other smartphones like the pixel 6 pro. So it's a lie essentialy.
So a huge sensor that's not being fully utilized, absolute insane price, and questionable long term software support. Buuut hopefully things get better because the hardware is awesome
Note: We noted to Sony that the 1-inch sensor only utilizes 12 MP from the available 20MP. Sony replied that they did this to create a series of benefits due to having a larger sensor that gives it larger pixels:
- better capture low light images
- faster shutter speeds,
- lower ISO in low light to reduce noise
- higher dynamic range
- shallower depth of field

I believe it should still be the same as other phones since the aperture is less and I heard on some reviews they don't actually use the entire 1" of the sensor (only about 1/1.33"), but the amount of control you can get from this sensor software wise makes it better

The reason it's digital zoom while zooming is that the telephoto lens is disabled on pre-production models, but when the phone is released that slider will switch from telephoto to wide.
Why are they disabled?
I love that the micro sd is toolless if you’re actually going to use this as a camera and move the photos over to a pc that will be a godsend I just hope it doesn’t get loose if it’s a friction fit tray.

In theory if they really are using the full 1-inch sensor then yes its a big deal, but I'm suspicious that its not really using it all and its in fact cropped.

Compared to the others the Xperia looks much more natural and less processed and the unfocused background is much more _real_ looking. Its hard to explain since I don't know anything about cameras.
Optical vs. digital bokeh. Other phones use digital blurring, but lenses blur things differently where they round off points of light instead of the typical gaussian blur that is common in the digital realm. Emulating the optical blur from a camera lens is actually quite difficult to do, hence why most smartphones still struggle with it.
@@CockatooDude Yeah, and digital blurring really requires more sophisticated machine learning tk determine the objects to remain focus while actually trying to make it seems more natural. And sometimes it still fails especially with fine objects to seperate, like hairs for example.
Many of the digital blurs just looks unnatural, as if somebody did a Photoshop on them.
Optical blurring of course don't suffer with these issues, since it's all natural physics at play.

This phone is so unique and fresh compared to other models launched in the last years that it definitely deserves a more in depth review. This is the type of device that gets me excited and not just the slight spec bumps we've been getting on other devices.
Look at the sharp aquos R6 - it's a phone with a 1" sensor that actually uses the full area. It's a wider lens (19mm eq.), but cropped in to the same FoV as the X pro-I it's identical (same area of the sensor, and f/1.9 Vs f/2). It's likely also a sony sensor from the RX100 series, although probably not stacked as it's not mentioned in the marketing. Unfortunately it's only on sale in japan, but I'm sure LTT could get their hands on one.
Also, for the pro-I price, an RX100 VA and xperia 5 iii is only a little bit more expensive but would give a far superior photography experience

The fact that you can preserve all 120fps and can benifit it while editing in PC is just insane. And amount of data it preserve for you to play around is really like a CAMERA and not phone!
I would like call it as a part of real camera benefits guys who film video by their own Without any assistance. It`s a solution between phone and cameras, better than normal smartphone with Sony Edgexxx APP installed.
Thoughts on the photos of the LEGO MSI Dragon: relative to each other viewing on a 12 Pro Max, the iPhone looks over saturated, the Pixel looks kinda dead, and the Sony look the best. Looks natural and not over sharpened.
I was actually surprised how over saturated the iPhone was, esp compared to the pixel. I would’ve expected the exact opposite tbh (went from P4XL to 12 Pro, so I’m familiar with the processing on both phones pics)
@@2turntalert that is what happens when it's next to more natural and high quality image from Xperia, the smaller sensor was affecting the dynamic range and low light performance. I think the Xperia camera will improve the most as we head into the future. Computational photography helped alot during a time when smart phone cameras and sensors were bad. Now the quality of pro cameras with better sensor will have better results. It take skills too but thats the challenge. Its like having super car, it's a challenge to drive

Sony: you can see the details such as the "translucency" of the legos. It loooks way better (particularly look at the top of the legos and how the lighting goes through it)
and in sony, you could even have the freedom to manipulate the image more in Post production, because it looks more natural and minimal processed

Yep. Other phones like a Leica which is based on a Sharp is actually using a whole 1'' sensor, so the Sony is neither a true 1'' sensor phone nor the first with such a sensor. At least it takes good pictures

I love what Sony is doing with their phones. I take many thousands of photos of photos each year and the vast majority of those happen with my phone because I can carry that anywhere whereas I have to tediously plan, pack, and then pull out a full body camera but then I can miss the moment. To me having a physical and textured button dedicated to a camera is a huge deal for me that a lot of "flagship" (ie really try hard cheap and dare I say POS) phones skimp out on and they often have issues with software failures and navigation delays that frankly take about as long for me to pull out a full body camera from a sling bag. So that and not mention an actual, no dangly dongle required, soup to nuts headphone jack make this phone actually worth something because it does something. Way to go Sony, no keep up the good work but I hope you can also bring features like this to a more mid market price because $1,800 is a large pill to swallow if it doesn't last 5 years.

Yea. That. Some people have a huge boner for it. Mostly Fuji and Panasonic users. Can definitely get the job done and even has some benefits over FF...faster sensor readout, for example.
But overall, it's true. The larger the sensor, the better in a lot of ways...to a point of course. FF is a very nice sweet spot in most ways.
Finally, Sony remembers to find something it's really good at and just completely show everyone else up.

For anyone else wondering - Looks like the 1" sensor is roughly 4-6 times larger area than other smartphones based on my research. That's significant!
It doesn't even use the entire sensor, only 60% of it equivalent to around a 1/1.33 sensor, same as many flagship phones like the S21 Ultra and Mi 11.

Like Peter already said, the Xperia Pro-I can only use about 60% of its sensor. The "real" size is only about 1/1.3" which is identical to what the S21 Ultra and Pixel 6 are using.
And even if it was the full sensor, it just isn't true anymore that this would be 4-6 times bigger than other smartphones. Even cheap midrange phones these days have 1/2" sensors and flagships are about 1/1.3" - 1/1.5".

The Sony haters are out in full power. It has faster image capture by far than the pixel and since it's treated as an actual camera can outperform any smart phone right now if you want specific shots. If you want a point and shoot, this definitely isn't the phone for you, but if you're interested in photography, this is an actual pro phone
Sony seems to be the only manufacturer out there, that puts tech into the device to push the industry forward, rather than flex on competition, while also stalling as much as realistically possible, just to juice more money over incremental upgrades. Really hope the software, as well as customer support for this device hold up over the years

I’m almost more blown away by the fact that it has a mechanical aperture than I am by the sensor size! Crazy how they’ve pulled all of this off without increasing the thickness beyond typical camera bump levels. This bodes extremely well for the future of phone photography and is a bit of a breakthrough imo.

Why is every reviewer not mentioning the fact that it doesn't use the full 1 inch sensor. Like yes it's a one inch sensor but the lens itself is only using a portion of it. The sensor in 20mp and it's cropping into the 12mp section.

But while it isn't using all of the sensor, it's still an engineering feat to fit the whole sensor in there and still maintain that ultra slim form factor. Other phones are nearly double the thickness with much smaller sensors and similar battery sizes (Sony's is 4.5k mah). It sort of gives us hope for the future since now we know it definitely is possible to fit not only a 1inch sensor, a really really great one that has been tried and tested with the rx100 series.

B) Double up that shutter switch as one button recording is emergency cases & also photo journalism scenarios.
I hope Sony does few adjustment/upgrade with upcoming pro i2 or xperia 1 iii iv and surly takes the Crown in smart phones industry.

The 13 Pro is $800 cheaper and does the same thing. It also has better battery life and will get much longer software support.
@@UProductions457 software support has been overrated for a long time..they make small changes but not enough that 99% of the population won't be able to tell the difference...my parents got the old iPhone 8 but hasn't updated anything for a very a long time and it still runs just as good

It's a functional actually pocketable back up camera to your dslr.
The camera form of this sensor is priced at 1200, the smartphone form is at 1800. So extra 600 toget the smartphone innards
@@hailgod1 Well 1200 but you can't make calls from an RX100 nor can you browse lttstore or watch TH-cam from it plus the xperia doubles as a monitor for the big rig, so that's I guess what the extra price is for in their thinking.
Again, the people it's oriented for are not known for cheaping out so even though you probably can buy a better smartphone (with worse camera) plus an RX100 they're not gonna do it given the option. I kinda understand this logic, I'd rather take a phone with very good camera over a pocket shooter for convenience and not looking like an idiot by using a pocket shooter in 2021, but if I had to use it as a monitor I'd be concerned about losing the ability to use a smartphone. But then again I'm a broke a$sh0le so this product isn't for me.
The variable aperture was one of the features that samsung introduced with their s9/note 9 series phones and discontinued when they released s20 series.

I would love to see this reviewed from a photographers perspective, instead of comparing the phones based on random images in different kinds of lighting it would be great to see how they handle various types of shooting scenarios like landscape, street, portrait etc... essentially using the full range of features to accurately represent the creative vision of the photographer.
I wish they did an switchable lens system, so when we aren't mobile we could change to a bigger lens and utilize the whole sensor.

While I do get the mechanical and technical part of why this is unique, at the end of the day, it's the results that matter. Would like to see it reviewed and compared with iPhone and Pixel.

Yes and no. In the pro space, much of the money you spend is on how the camera handles. If a camera is easy to set up the exact shot you want, it might be preferred over better iq but difficult to use, or more automatic. And a lower iq, but a more flexible codec would be preferable. Especially with respect to video.
In most "pro" situations, absolute iq doesnt really matter. It's flexibility, speed, and reliability that really matter.
Edit: I don't know which one of these cameras does what better than the other, I'm not advocating for any of them. I'm just saying that it isn't necessarily the results (absolute iq) that matter.

Sony images are a bit fall behind in case of computational processing, but produce better RAW images. If ur pros the manual control will be very usefull and those images can be post edited later and the result is on another level.
At least that's what I know from other pros reviewing this phone, xd

They always emphasize that the Xperia cameras are built upon the technologies incorporated in their Alpha mirrorless cameras, and that the Alpha camera engineers also designed the cameras of Xperias, so it is no surprise that Xperia cameras also work and should be used like an Alpha camera, and even down to the image processing, the rendition is very similar to Alphas.
If they really intended to compete in the same battlefield where Apple, Samsung, and Google are dominating, then they could've easily done that, but they instead took a different approach with their phones, and that one is something that is similar to what LG did in the past with their V series.

I would love to see a 30-60min comparison video of the 3 phones and some professional DSLR cameras. As well as long term usage in terms of heat and battery life for the phone.
I would love to see a deeper review, because there were a little to nothing mentioned about anything else than the camera and the related features.

Brandon, while the camera has a 1" sensor, DPReview is reporting that the lens doesn't actually cover the full sensor.
Yes, that is why it's 12MP and not 20MP like an RX100. But the pixel pitch is the same (2.4um) which is what matters.
If there is an in depth video: I'd love to know the time it takes before it overheats; if it does. Also check how long it takes to overheat between different resolutions and fps. I'd also love a lot more comparisons because while Sony puts really good lenses on their phones, their software is a bit lacking compared to Apple and Google. That said, I think in the last year it sounds like Sony stepped up their game on the software so it might not be as much of an issue now. Finally I'd like general battery life with moderate camera/video use. Thanks!
I currently have a Xperia XZ2 compact and after about 20-25 minutes of 1080p 30fps recording it will shut off the recording to avoid overheating. It does give warnings (and I think noises but I almost always have my phone on vibrate) but it is a bit annoying to wait 5-10 minutes for it to cool back down.
The shutter button Sony puts on their phones is just the best feature for me on my phone. No tapping or sliding to grab a quick photo/video in the moment; just a quick button press and my phone is in camera mode before it leaves my pocket. And the auto focus when you half press the shutter button is another amazing feature I love. It really amazes me how cameras are marketed so much and yet there are hardly any other manufacturers that have a dedicated camera button; you're best luck is remapping a button on an android phone. My only hope is that Sony is still around and making phones when I'm looking to upgrade; although I'd say this phone is extremely tempting and I could see Sony giving a good discount in a couple months or half a year after it releases.
Edit: Unless the news has changed since I heard this: I think Sony has only guaranteed 1 year of updates for the Xperia 1 III. So while Sony is pretty big with supporting device configurations on AOSP - this means if you are willing to put in some work you can update the phone yourself - I'd like to see how long Sony states they will supply Android updates or at least security updates. Just something to consider for folks interested in buying this phone.
Security updates aside, I'd like to point out that for the apps that I use anyways, android versions tend to be supported for years longer than their ios counterparts. You would be losing out on security updates getting a phone like this though. But I think sony did commit to at least 2 android os updates.
YES. An in depth video between the 3 would be very nice. But don't forget to make an auto and cinema graded version as well. Those are important features.
It still bothers me that Sony is calling this a 1” sensor smartphone while only center 60% of the pixels on the sensor is used (12MP on Pro-I vs 20MP on RX100). Call this “same sensor as RX100” is technically correct, but calling it 1” is misleading in my dictionary.
Absolutely this. I'd pay $1799 for a full rx100 vii in a phone. But the sensor is cropped to about the same as the Pixel 6, so that's a really hard sell for that much money.
Funny enough, Sony isn't even calling it an 1" sensor. Only all these people here are yelling this all the time without even reading and listening to what Sony says. They're calling it s "type 1.0 sensor" , not 1".
The thing i would have loved to see, is an F1.4 lens, with a stop down to F4
But that's much easier said than done. There's probably a reason why it's only F2 and not even like F1.8 or F1.6.
F1.4 is completely unheard of in a smartphones - which also probably has reasons.
@@Raja995mh33 I would happily put up with a 20mm thick smartphone, as long as it was flush mount, maybe that extra space could be used for a 5000AH battery, a full sized push-push style SD card slot (in addition to the microSD card slot), and maybe even two USB-C ports, one for power, and one for two way power, video, and USB, for controlling an external camera while providing pass through power from a battery bank.
@@denvera1g1 No you wouldn't. You pretty much never used such a thick phone so you can say everything. I'm 100% sure as soon as you would actually use such a thick phone (that would also be at least 400g), you would not like to use it AT ALL.
All Smartphone companies know why they make phones the thickness they are and compromised it with thicker camera bumps etc for reasons. And that's not because they want phones to be as thin as possible because this trend is entirely dead for years. They're doing it because otherwise these phone would not be comfortable to use even after a short period of time.

My first phone was 22mm thick. and the camera this sensor came from just happens to be about the same dimentions and weight, yet hundreds of thousands of people use this camera, I personally find it uncomfrtably small, the same as ALL of my phones except for those old Nokia phone bricks, always too slim to grip comfortably
I doubt sony smartphones sell that well but I love that they always try to innovate or push something into the next level... kind of what lg used to be before but hey! it's always welcome that people can have more options.

No it is not BS. What matters in this case is the pixel pitch. The lens does project an image smaller than the whole sensor which is why it's 12MP and not 20MP like an RX100 with the same type of sensor. That doesn't affect image quality, just resolution. The pixel pitch on the Xperia is 2.4μm while on the Pixel 6 Pro it's 1.12μm

@@veryboringname. of course the pixel 6 would have smaller pitch. It's got a 50 megapixel sensor. The sony would have the same 2.4 um pixel pitch if it were an actual 1/1.31" sensor at 12MP. It is completely irrelevant where the sensor came from. Would it be fair to advertise, for instance, a phone as having a full frame sensor, even though a miniscule portion of it is actually used, just because the pixel pitch matches?

@@cbflazaro That's a good point, but only if you don't consider the other benefits of that sensor. Sony's 1.0-type sensors have been known to be good performers (dynamic range, color depth, noise etc). Only using a portion of that sensor still gives you the same dynamic range, color depth, noise etc of the sensor - you just get fewer megapixels. And as we all know, image quality isn't all about megapixels.
I think the issue is (of course) viewpoints. Some people see "this phone uses a 1.0-type sensor" and expect it to mean "this phone uses the entire surface area of a 1.0-type sensor". That was my original assumption of course, but when I thought about it, it's giving the exact same image quality (dynamic range, color depth, noise) as if it did use the whole surface area of the sensor, just at 12MP instead of 20MP, so I was fine with it.
Considering how much of the sensor isn't used, I wonder if this 1 inch sensor is a throw out from the RX100 that has like bad pixels along the outer edges and sony is just cheating with the "1 inch sensor" advertising. With that said, let's see a full review! And maybe a full episode of short circuit shot using this!
The interesting point is that Sony actually isn't lying in their marketing. Sony actually says not a single time that it's a 1" sensor. They always say that it's a "type 1.0 sensor from the RX100". But people are just not reading correctly...
This is not some kind of Chinese move where Sony will use sub-par quality components on their products, especially a $1800 one. They have always used super high quality parts, and as a result, Xperias are among the least maintenance smartphones.
Also, the sensor is intentionally cropped in order to maintain a relatively small camera bump and to increase the sensor's readout speed, all while still having the benefits of using a 1" sensor like greater light sensitivity and wider dynamic range.
After all, it's safe to say that a 12MP cropped output from 20MP is still better than native 12MP output.
Sony did *NOT* lie about the 1" sensor size because the physical hardware is really there, just not used the usual way.
@@troy5568 I mostly agree with you but one thing to note, Nvidia put 4gb of vram on the GTX 970 graphics card but it became infamous when it came out that last 512mb was connected using a slower implementation and the uproar over that led to a class action lawsuit. It was there, but just not used the usual way (as you said), but that didn't stop the public from punishing the company for doing so.
It likely is exactly that, because it would save them money if they can reuse otherwise unusable parts.

I still have the xperia 1ii and people always comment about it and the pictures it takes. I'm watching this on my old XZ3! Still a great phone coming up to 4 years old!

I would expect an LMG video to point out that the sensor is yes 1 inch but the actual area of the sensor used is about the same size as something in the other smartphones like the pixel 6 pro. So it's a lie essentialy.
So a huge sensor that's not being fully utilized, absolute insane price, and questionable long term software support. Buuut hopefully things get better because the hardware is awesome
