@@lazy-rabbitzwhere I live if you do that you’ll receive a letter saying “this price is outside of the standard sale range, please certify you actually paid this price,” and you sign and return the paperwork the price is correct. Spot on Vin! I've been replicating a similar model to what you are describing over the past 15 years and have gone from my very first Porsche (1986 944) and worked my way up to a GT3, 718 spyder, and a few other amazing cars. I would also suggest that picking your favorite brand and sticking with it helps tremendously. You end up learning the nuances of what people are looking for (rare spec etc) and are able to track the markets easier. It helps you understand a great deal when you see one and move on it before others find out about it.
Wait idk if I missed something but how exactly do you move "up"? Might've missed something in the video, but as far as I can tell, he told us how to not lose money on cars, not actually on how to move upwards. Do you buy said cars, and then try and sell them for a _profit_ after a couple k miles? Or are you just breaking even with what you paid for it, except now it's slightly higher mileage, and you had the experience of driving it around and living with it?
@@_ph4nt0mzz_47 My ethos in buying cars matches what Vin is saying in his video. I just ended up getting lucky and bought the right cars at the right time and inevitably all went up in value during my ownership. It was a nice extra of following what Vin's method was.
Awesome video, one thing I've learned about depreciation though is there is a tipping point for special edition low production cars. In my experience ten years old is when they hit rock bottom, but then rarity and nostalgia will have them climbing shortly after.
Haha wow I feel so related to this. I'm doing the same actually. Bought my JDM Forester STI for 10k and drove it 100k kilometers in 4,5 years and sold it for 17k. I made it look cooler, got a respray etc and just maintained it really good. Now bought a BMW E39 540 which looks way cooler and spent all the bucks to have it maintained and probably flip it for more.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who asked for a video like this, but I commented asking for exactly this topic on your 3rd (I think?) video, and now I've got 28 minutes to look forward to. You're a legend.
"unplug the horn" duh obviously, this is COMPLETELY logical and VERY rational, thank you ferrari Specialty models is such a good shout. Those will always be worth money and there will always be a dedicated audience and a following for them. I inherited a base Golf TSI and you can't imagine how hard it's been to get rid of, GTis are now worth the same money here but I reckon that'd have been gone yesterday. That, I'm GLAD was mentioned. I am tempted by the specs though, I think unless you truly commit to wanting the experience but going to be rid of it at some point it is tough when I don't feel cool, yknow? The MC20 though! Interested to see a themed video on it!
How do taxes work in Cali? In Canada we pay full tax on used cars so you lose all of that every time you move from car to car. Swapping annually would add up to not make sense for cars at these unique car’s price point
I grew up in NY and now live in CA, both of which have high taxes. You definitely need to factor that into the price of the car. Which is easier on low dollar cars but the margins generally get wider when you spend more so it could work but gets harder for sure.
I live in canada and i do not pay a cent for car taxes... i got a native band card so everytime i buy a car and go to service ontario i only gotta pay 60 dollars for plates
I am doing this in the worst place of all. Singapore. It's not easy , but it's really a rewarding experience to change through plenty of cars. 23cars since 2019 and going strong.
This is one of the big ticket items on places I am looking to move to. The taxes when buying/selling, local taxes, registration, is cost-prohibitive in some areas, like where I live now spending $1000/year on taxes registration on a few year old Toyota and $500/year on a 20 year old Jetta before insurance. When I start looking at cars that I could "afford", or a camper to travel more, I'd be looking at $5-10k/year just to have it sit there BEFORE insurance.
Ive been through 8 or 9 different cars over the last 3 years. Each one was the scenario of I would sell the car and buy another one within the same week. While it has been very stressful at times, it has also been the most fun! Ive gone from JDM, to Domestic, and now I am officially in my first Euro car which is a B8 Audi S4 and I love it! I just make sure I don't over spend or get to deep into the vehicles purchase cost so I can actually afford it and the repairs if it needs any. Has worked out for me so far and its been a great experience over all!
Absolutely great advice and you have had some sick cars!! Just came across pics I took at SEMA a couple of years ago of your ole NSX. What a sweet ride that was! Great job!
I get emotionally and therefor financially attached to every car I’ve bought and still own all that have not been totaled - 6 BMWs and a couple others in the stable - I do drive 4-5 of them one is a project and the other is FOR projects (towing and hauling etc) never bought a car I didn’t wanna own but I’ve sunk more than I’ll ever try to calculate in em
20:30 Good advise. I was looking for a particular car for years, and 'settled', but I got it for $3.5k (10%) under what I was looking for, and could have turned around and sold it for a profit, but I love it so after 2 years and 11k miles, I am probably going to keep it another year or two.
This is right up my alley. I've had several Porsches, MBs, BMWs and motorcycles and I live in Los Angeles and still support a family on one income. I'm not close to being wealthy but never had a car payment over $400/mo. It's definitely possible guys.
I ended up inadvertently using your tips on Monday when I picked up a 2005 Volvo S40 T5 AWD with a 6 speed manual for $1,600. It's a car I absolutely was interested in getting, it's rare, it was a good deal despite having a black interior that I thought was boring, and I basically pestered the owner enough that I had the car on a uhaul trailer 24 hrs later. It's a car that I'd be okay with just keeping but with a little TLC I could absolutely sell this thing for $6K since it came with a fat stack of maintenance records, 2 keys, a clean title, and has no significant electrical issues.
I agree with most of what you said. I am a flipper. Just by design and i buy cars that i know after 5-10k miles I’ll still profit from. I’ll never buy a car out of impulse or without an intention of reselling. As for the mods factor. I usually modify cars that have either significant dealer installed aftermarket value or with parts that are nearly impossible to find. And i always make bank on top of what i buy. But all in all. Good points made -
Them boys are right, the deeper you go with that Ferrari the cooler that light gold color is gonna look. Also, thanks for this, I think this is basically what people were asking for.
The VWR32 is an Audi R model in hatchback. It says Audi on almost all the parts, I love that car, I also love they called it an R32 like a gtr and put it out in gtr blue, it’s also a 6cylinder awd car that crushed many cars costing much more, plus that na v6 sounds do much better than the newer golf r’s turbos.
Love the videos, the only thing I think missing in this video is where do you buy and sell your vehicals? Facebook Market Place, craigslist, dealerships?
Interesting to finally see Vin's take on this. For those sceptical, this works. I had been doing this while at university (as well as working) and it allowed me pay off my University up front and I got to mess with and drive a cool daily that I could sell for a profit. A lot easier than flipping houses 😅
Another great video and some very interesting way to think about cars and how to get into different rides. Now that you are at higher level of cars that you're buying, selling, and driving have nice older/mid range cars lost the appeal or do you still like getting into a nice GTI or Honda etc and taking them for a drive?
8 minutes in and I’ve learned….buy good cars and buy cars I like?? Can’t wait to be blown away by the rest of these amazing tips stretched out over 30min
Yeah my dream car is a Lincoln Town Car for reasons I won't get into so I started looking for one. All the reasonably priced ones were either beat up or had to many miles. So I took a plunge and bought one from a dealership loosing my shirt in the process. It's such a nice car. 18 years old but like a brand new one. I'll never get the money back out of it but I'd never sale it either. I just wanted to share.
Love this video, a good message for when it comes to owning what you like and spending/saving money to buy what you want from the beginning! Especially the specialty concept, I wish I knew this before I started dumping money on my car. Purchased a Datsun 260Z on impulse, and I keep having a hard time trying to find time and money to work on it.
is that a white mk1 cabriolet in the back of the shop… Damn, that brings back so many memories. Been such a long time since i’ve had a vehicle i’ve actually wanted to work on. Literally my only video i’ve posted to youtube was the first time I started my MK1 full rebuild.
Some really valuable lessons here. Planning on selling my IS350 daily drive (drove it for too long, so it's depreciated). Planning on buying an SS Wagon (with the L98 V8) here in Aus. Stay in it for a short time so you don't lose your arse on it. With that said, they don't make SS Commodores anymore, so I mightn't lose much cash on it when the time comes to sell.
Love it! I do swedish cars. Right now ive got a long term Volvo C30 t5 v2.0(pre R-Design, less than 2000 sold in the u.s.), but I just cruised through a manual Saab 9000 2.3t, and I'll probably snag a 9-3 Viggen next. Great points on this video, you cant be attached to these things. Its just metal and plastic. Enjoy it and move on. Also I previous had a 360 for a work car back in 2010 when I lived in Vegas. Let me tell you just how fun changing the water pump is on that car hahahaha!! I miss that thing though.
I'm sitting on a lifted ram shorty i thought would flip big profit, can't find a buyer for a select market truck.. atleast i like to drive it.. vin speaks the truth here. 🙌
I’ve had over 60 cars and follow a similar strategy. Only lost money on one car. The goal is to own the car from 6-12 months and break even. It’s enough time to get it out of my system and I can own a car long enough to appreciate it. I always have at least 2 cars in case a good deal comes by or a persistent buyer wants one. Following these rules give you leverage and most importantly, never be afraid to walk away from a deal. If it doesn’t make sense then don’t force it. Don’t get too passionate about the purchase unless you are planning on keeping the car for the long haul.
You are putting out great videos. Keep the style and the feel you are using. I like seeing the Hoonigans sometimes also. I also like the music. Great stuff.
I used to have an 85 delta 88 coupe. One day on my way to work it was winter time and the windshield was frozen. I don't know what I was thinking but I hit the wiper. After that it had a mono wiper.
I cannot lie I unintentionally followed this method with my 91 Mazda Miata. Got it for a great deal, replaced the custom exhaust with a stock one, began converting it to oem plus, and actually made a profit off the car when my time was done with it. After selling the MST wheels and KBD body kit I was actually positive about 1.5k on the car.
Specialize. I sold at least 30 RX7's. I would buy them as 'Blown up' when really most of the time it was just a stuck apex seal. Worst case scenario, theyre easy to rebuild. Only has 3 moving parts.
Dust for sure sucks for CA. Detail for a side hustle and found scratches are mostly avoided but yeah... it comes with the price of time to keep on on a black car.
I want to have a serious discussion about the valuation of modified cars and and what point modifying them increases the value. The Veloster on FB marketplace to a Singer Porsche. There is a range and there has to be a way to determine if value has been added or taken away.
Wheels, tires, suspension & exhaust that's extra money & alot specially moddimg a vehicle you'll never gain on it......I like that Dark BMW you got tho the set up looks fresh AF.
Not that i care about specifics of my daily but i have preferences, good on gas, not black, cloth seats, reliable ish, and my mk4 only really ticks the cloth seats box. I dont move through cars like that but as a daily car i didnt care that what happened to be a good deal was a miled out black mk4.5. Sure its ugly, sure its got no headliner but whatever it was cheap. Found a solid not rotted chassis and took it, its a 2.slow so ive only put like 300 bucks into it over 6 or 8 months. The perfect daily
#1 hurt me -.- i bought a r34 coupe from japan went to ez then got a rare k truck and then was like lets buy something to flip..... bought rarest s15 vert manual 1 of 1100 hated how slow it was but thought good investment -.- ended up not wanting to wait and didn't wanna get stuck with it sold cheaply to lucky guy broke even or lost money depending on u.s dollar..... DONT BUY JUST TO FLIP -.- Keep up the content!
It's a time honored formula Mechanical knowledge X close proximity to an affluent area = sweet rides I.E. there's a lot of totalled BMWs with low miles in the long island area, or near me in the DMV lots of retired fleet cars with LS engines 😊😊
I really think the color of the Ferrari goes along with what's in style clothes wise. Same time period type thing. Old school. Champagne color with wide leg pants etc. just add a fedora hat. Im digging it.
What's the sales tax on cars in your state? Where I live in Canada - we pay 13% sales tax on new or used cars. Either on the price you paid, or the blue book value (whatever is higher) It makes doing this impossible.
At the other end of the spectrum is the mindset to keep your cars for as long as possible so you don't become "car poor". My last daily driver I had it for 13 years and put 252,000 miles on it. I kept it mostly stock and made sure that I kept up on maintenance.
Can you please go over finances with paying multiple cars at once. Besides having hoonigan money like, financing from the bank multiple times. Does that affect credit?
If you start a business or llc you can actually claim any depreciation against income for tax reasons, you also get to claim taxes, maintenance, even the cost of the car can be deductible, of course you need to be using the car for “business purposes” I’ve used mine for “demonstration” travel to meetings, using it for advertising, even as t&e for upgrades and other modifications. Of course you need to make enough money to deduct it from lol.

But, more than once the damn tax/reg/DMV stuff put a dent into my build up.
Yes. No a days that have a minimum value for them as well at the dmv. So you can’t just say you got it for 500$
@@lazy-rabbitzwhere I live if you do that you’ll receive a letter saying “this price is outside of the standard sale range, please certify you actually paid this price,” and you sign and return the paperwork the price is correct. Do they follow up after that? I dunno, but they have you sign paper that might make you liable if they decide to prosecute.
One of the best videos for car enthusiasts! Keep them coming bro. I have a much better understanding now. Thank you.
Awesome video, one thing I've learned about depreciation though is there is a tipping point for special edition low production cars. In my experience ten years old is when they hit rock bottom, but then rarity and nostalgia will have them climbing shortly after.
Yes this is 100% true
Haha wow I feel so related to this. I'm doing the same actually. Bought my JDM Forester STI for 10k and drove it 100k kilometers in 4,5 years and sold it for 17k. I made it look cooler, got a respray etc and just maintained it really good. Now bought a BMW E39 540 which looks way cooler and spent all the bucks to have it maintained and probably flip it for more.
I've been car hacking for many years. Always made money, and enjoyed driving every purchase. Love your videos, keep em' coming.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who asked for a video like this, but I commented asking for exactly this topic on your 3rd (I think?) video, and now I've got 28 minutes to look forward to. You're a legend.
HELLLL YA!
Vinny my guy, your production value is going through the roof. Loving the new episodes.
Thanks!
"unplug the horn" duh obviously, this is COMPLETELY logical and VERY rational, thank you ferrari
Specialty models is such a good shout.
I stumbled onto your channel, but it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Awesome content. Keep crushing it!
feels like talking to a cool uncle. thanks Vin, i knew youre a great guy. cheers for more!
Almost hit us with the “Here in my garage..” intro
Used car lot mentality versus being an auto enthusiast. U live and learn. Preach it up Vin!!
You earned a subscriber with the amount of truth in this vid. Thanks for not labeling it a raptor video, it would have never showed up in my feed!
This is the move!
It’s been super cool to see all of the previous hoonigan’s continue their TH-cam journey! Keep kickin dope content vin!!!
Those Maserati MC20's are sweet. We had the pleasure of having one in our shop for a radar system for a couple weeks.
Absolutely great advice and you have had some sick cars!! Just came across pics I took at SEMA a couple of years ago of your ole NSX. What a sweet ride that was! Great job!
Yo, Vin! Gotta tell ya, I like your music selections. Keep it up, chief!
Thanks, sport
Good points made -
you and pretty much all the other ex hoonigan guys are saving the youtube carscene, very much appreciated
WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER EPISODE OF THIS VS THAT
@@vin_traWhen the quiet part about “keeping it close” was said out loud is when I stopped watching entirely.
This is great information and well articulated. Good Stuff man.
This is one of the best videos I have watched for information. Long time fan.
Now that you are at higher level of cars that you're buying, selling, and driving have nice older/mid range cars lost the appeal or do you still like getting into a nice GTI or Honda etc and taking them for a drive?
lol im the same way. i usually look for cars that need some work that i can do myself.usually right around the 100k mile mark.
8:02 - 8:10 😂❤🎉my favorite. Great video, good points covered I can relate in my experience on a much smaller scale. Little steps
be open to any specs aka best deal is the best. porsches though sometimes need to be picky because it's impossible to get anything after.
How does your insurance costs when you cycle through cars that much? Or do you have a umbrella insurance plan under a business (LLC)?
Nope. But you pay per month and it adjusts when you swap cars.
Vin! This is like one of the few content ads that are actually congruent to the audience, well done
You are putting out great videos. Keep the style and the feel you are using. I like seeing the Hoonigans sometimes also. I also like the music. Great stuff.
Your storytelling is amazing! Hook after hook. Didn’t even skip your sponsored ad lmao
The Raptor with the 6.2 V 8 is my fav.
Good luck folks, it’s wild out there.
Got my ideal spec for my f82. (Yas marina with white interior) just got lucky that it was the deal as well.
I used to have an 85 delta 88 coupe. One day on my way to work it was winter time and the windshield was frozen. I don't know what I was thinking but I hit the wiper. After that it had a mono wiper.
I love the channel, the editing and cut scenes are *just* on the good side of being too corny and TH-camr style. I hope you keep it how it is.
watching this checking the "value" of my 2015 chevy SS manual... think i did it right
Also had that low mile AP1 stock S2000 I sold with a little under 47k on it. For more than I bought it for
I cannot lie I unintentionally followed this method with my 91 Mazda Miata.
This is the best content on TH-cam right now. Behind Zach. And suppy. And the rest of the gang
DONT BUY JUST TO FLIP -.-
Keep up the content!
This video kept me engaged with the adhd styling. Keep it up, some of us need this content or we click out
Yes put a wing on that thing! Also love the familymart socks.
HAHAHA YOOOO the spotting
@@vin_tra you can’t hide those beautys
Great video, Vin. You are WAY smarter with your cars than I ever was with mine.
im 11 minutes in and still have no idea what this strat is
I was thinking the same thing
It's a time honored formula
Mechanical knowledge X close proximity to an affluent area = sweet rides
I.E. there's a lot of totalled BMWs with low miles in the long island area, or near me in the DMV lots of retired fleet cars with LS engines 😊😊
I really think the color of the Ferrari goes along with what's in style clothes wise. Same time period type thing. Old school. Champagne color with wide leg pants etc. just add a fedora hat. Im digging it.
100% agree keep the color and put a obnoxious chassis mounted wing. It would be fire 🔥
12:59 white s2k on white fifteen52 tarmac would be sickkk
What up vinnie. Thanks for the vids. It makes missing 621 golden not so bad. Keep rocking dude.
What's the sales tax on cars in your state?
Where I live in Canada - we pay 13% sales tax on new or used cars. Either on the price you paid, or the blue book value (whatever is higher)
It makes doing this impossible.
At the other end of the spectrum is the mindset to keep your cars for as long as possible so you don't become "car poor". My last daily driver I had it for 13 years and put 252,000 miles on it. I kept it mostly stock and made sure that I kept up on maintenance.
Sick video once again! Now back to spending more money on the 360 haha! I look forward to Thursdays now.. nice work.
Killing it. How are you so good behind the camera? Really enjoyed this. Keep it up Vin!
I've flipped some cars in the last few years... well I got attached to a VW Beetle with a 2.0 Turbo. Sold all the cars and kept this one. Now I only focus on my main job lmao. Everything u said I agree 100%!
The more you hate on that 360’s gold paint, the more that I grow to like it. Looks more silver than gold on video in any case.
I was really hoping the rain would let up so you could take the MC20 for a rip. Lol. This shared some interesting perspective. Looking forward to the next one!
