That is a diabolical amount of work for only $2500 profit, BUT as other commenters have already said, this type of work is typically a passion project. People restoring these cars and reselling them, just to keep these gems on the streets. Any money made is just the cherry on top.
For 1 car yes it doesn't seem worth it, but you either do this 1-2x a year and make passive income or you do 3-4 a month and make $8k. If you continuosly have a car on the go or multiple you can make it a full time gig, some do very well picking the right cars
a really good guy i know who runs a small JDM shop here in CT once told me, "if you're doing it RIGHT (as in, HONEST), you're not making any money.." and it's 100% true.. these are passion projects
It doesn’t seam like a lot of money but the standard profit on used cars is 10-15%. It’s only 5-10% on high end and luxury cars. That’s for car dealers, not saying there isn’t the opportunity to make more.
Sage wisdom: it’s always better to buy and incrementally improve cars while also ENJOYING it and then eventually selling it vs straight flipping. Man, I love this channel. So glad that Vinny is making his own content.
I appreciate the actual cost breakdown. Feel like that’s taboo on TH-cam. Also, $4,500 for a full paint job here in CA is ridiculous!! Wish I was that tight with a body guy lol.
Flipping cars can be profitable always but when you are car guy you’d much rather get more smiles per gallon than dollars. You didn’t even get to one show or meet in the thing before it was gone let alone with the tube being your main source of income it did not net well in the creation aspect either. However you have a two car garage, where most of your content is created, and a full driveway and still parking on the street. With that being said stuff like the 14 and the 36 kinda go by the wayside because they are outa site outa mind. We get it. I watch enough automotive TH-camrs to understand it. Good luck man! Yer content is awesome! You and Dan make Thursday’s great so keep it up
I feel like Damon from DDE is the one that bought the E36!! He was just saying in the last video that he wanted to surprise Tim with a drift block beater
I bought my dream car a bit over 3 weeks ago. It's a 1997 Toyota Chaser Tourer-V jzx100. It has some decent mods done to it already by the previous owner. I haven't driven it yet because it's winter here where I live so, I'll get to drive it sometime at the end of April next year. I can't wait for the summer and the warm weather to be here so I can finally drive it.
Holy smokes, your subscriber count more-than doubled since the last time I checked! Congrats, man. Hope others can follow suite and keep the suspense going to grow their channels
streetable drift car! let’s go! vins dual purpose builds are my favorite: the track/street e46 and the drift/street s14. can’t wait to see what’s next.
Great video Vin. E36 doesn't do it for me. I enjoy the E30 or E90, so it wasn't a disappointment for me to see it go. Having Amy on was a nice surprise
Don't always make money on getting karma points, but 10% profit + content is worth saving a JDM classic and keeping it clean instead of clapping it out. Thanks for doing the experiment though lol
14:29 YO that's my buddy Alfredo's M30!! Went to high school with him, he had a DC Integra when I just got into cars. He's really come up a lot since then!
Truth, it’s usually BS excuse after BS excuse and it’s not until you threaten to take your car and place a mechanics lean against them that they complete the job. I have a lot of hatred for body shops.
You did it though! 10 percent aint enough, bit of a bummer, but hey. 20 percent should be your minimum on any sale, 10 of the whole is swallowed by your time. Good work Vin.
Kiss your paint & body guy on the lips for this one lmao. Dude knocked it out of the park. I'm loving how well rounded the content is. The little field trip to the Greddy meet was cool.
s14 time. it's been a while. and it's a nice wrap up. sold quick... but back in good shape. looks good. you wanted stock or a daily. and you have more convenient cars for that. so it's not that bad of a flip, imo. not alot of profit for sure, but content. the next owner will surely enjoy this nice jdm classic. or tune it a lil bit more. a good base you don't have to invest in and maybe not reach a good resale because of the full on mods. (jsyk... i was just rummaging on my ssd and watching the overbuilt s14 render i put on ig. weird coincidence the video popped up in that moment. x)
Lol i watched this to justify my decisions then realized you have a clean underbody and an engine that doesn't need to be rebuilt or replaced 😕. No regrets
Your approximately 11% ROI which is not bad plus you get content out it additional revenue. I think that’s a solid business model maybe next time do it as a giveaway car and see what your return would be. I’d like to see that.
Everything he did i believe is perfectly what should’ve been done, except the paint job. I know it wasn’t perfect and the front fender had damage. But unless I know I’m gonna keep this car for a long time, I wouldn’t have painted it, it’s a good price for the work and clearly it looks 260% better freshly painted, but that just took up too much money imo. Not knowing he’s gonna sell it or for how much, luckily he still made a profit. I would’ve personally enjoyed it for a year or so before I actually considered a paint job. I’d have look and find a new fender and get a good spot job done and polish the rest at best until then. However to each their own, good job on the car, the work and the sale. And to top it off you made a profit. Good on ya
I like youre chanel alot! best content and fun projects to follow. I would say that back in the day when Hoonigan start on youtube. My favorit persons to follow was you Hert and Kikawa! 😃
Same thing happened with my s14 kouki "barnfind". Bought it with 3 owners (same family), garaged entire life and used as a commuter. Manual swapped it, did all the maintenance, completely refreshed the suspension with GKTech, JDM Kouki kit paint matched, and it looked dope. Spent about the same ($22k, and sold the car for $21k). Lost money on it and didn't get to enjoy it, but built some good karma setting it up for the next owner. I think the real return was all the friends I made along the way? 😭
Vin you saved a JDM classic to be honest I feel like it was but as far as profiting not the greatest. The car sat for a very long time and after everything you've done it's finally finished and being enjoyed like it should be. And last of all when you joining DDE?
@vin_tra So I was really just curious. I watched DDE, and they said something about you joining up with their channel. I really think it'd be awesome you back at the hoonigan building. But I also understand from a creators perspective your doing your own journey. I really don't want to see this channel stop I've been here since the first upload.
I probably would have sold it too.. Which was the best decision..Glad it didn't end up a drift missile..Car turned out great..Did the BMW buyer stand you up..🤷🏾?..Good video either way..👍🏾🏁
It's such a clean car. I'm happy you chose not to make it into a drift missile. Hopefully the next owner respects the car enough to not destroy the build.
I never got the love for the 240SX. My dad sold Nissans in the late Eighties and Nineties, and he could not give these things away. He could sell Pathfinders, Z32s, Sentras, and Maximas all day, but no one bought these.
Next time you poor oil turn the quart around so the angle part faces forward. It's designed to be poored that way to accurately poor without spilling. This is a detail most peope don't know even car people, but trust me it works once you see how the difference you will understand why they made it like that.
TBH, as this was a side project, not your main source of income, I'd say any profit is good as it was mainly other people's time that went into it and you still came out positive. Do these kind of things more often, but not really actively searching for it, and you'll get a nice bonus to treat yourself on other things.
The fact you used to pick up decently clean 240s for like 1500 bucks and now there in the teens is insane makes me sick i had a pig nose notch s13 that needed a few things I paid 800 bucks got it running fixed the little shit and sold it for 2 k still needing a clutch and brakes wow
Congrats on the sale, even with the limited profit.. 🤘🏻👍🏻Am new to your channel, so I don’t know your background, and car history. But are the blue make 4 golf, also your car? If so, will there be any content about that🤷🏼♂️
Idk man, that’s pretty close to the 12% return investors expect for that buy in. Sucks about the sweat equity part, but wasn’t worthless by any measure.
omg vin that beamer stunt hahaha doing donuts with no steering wheel. that's like your 2nd best stunt next to the seesaw burnout you did on the shart kart lol
That is a diabolical amount of work for only $2500 profit, BUT as other commenters have already said, this type of work is typically a passion project. People restoring these cars and reselling them, just to keep these gems on the streets. Any money made is just the cherry on top.
That 4500$ paint and body job is sounding wrong ...
Content tho. Thats the biggest thing. Not only did he make money he got content out of it. Win. Win. Win.
Yeah he got the heavy TH-cam discount. I've had a just rear fender quoted for 3k before lol
For 1 car yes it doesn't seem worth it, but you either do this 1-2x a year and make passive income or you do 3-4 a month and make $8k. If you continuosly have a car on the go or multiple you can make it a full time gig, some do very well picking the right cars

10:26 drifting with no wheel is insane. A whole new meaning to one handed drift
You should check out e30 'Gusheshe spinning' in south africa.
I’ll be honest, I forgot about this car
The ferrari is cooler tho
Because he’s been too busy making commercials for Hyundai 😅
I think we all did
me too.. wasn't into this car
Vin did as well 😂
The one reason you made money is because your paint guy hooked you up haha
Straight up
definitely. I payed 8k for my FD to get painted
@psychicer5022 that's even a good price. That's what I payed also to get my 300zx painted
Good update Vin! Glad you kept the s14 OEM+. I wouldn’t invest 20k to make 2500 but you saved a JDM classic and it hopefully went to a good home
It doesn’t seam like a lot of money but the standard profit on used cars is 10-15%. It’s only 5-10% on high end and luxury cars. That’s for car dealers, not saying there isn’t the opportunity to make more.
I woulda kept it.
@@insaneconqueror5421 i should of but i dont have space for it
Ripping donuts with no steering wheel is the best kind of crazy 😂😂😂 yo vin what music is that playing when you were talking to Ivan!?
Respect for being so transparent with the money situation and very educational. Great video too btw, Vin.
Sage wisdom: it’s always better to buy and incrementally improve cars while also ENJOYING it and then eventually selling it vs straight flipping.
Man, I love this channel. So glad that Vinny is making his own content.
Man that 240SX is so clean and I totally understand why it's better without a sunroof. It looks so sexy.
I appreciate the actual cost breakdown. Feel like that’s taboo on TH-cam. Also, $4,500 for a full paint job here in CA is ridiculous!! Wish I was that tight with a body guy lol.

Big respect for the open book attitude on this one!! Yet another reason why Vin is one of the best around
Thanks for showing us the process, step by step, and the results!
I feel like Damon from DDE is the one that bought the E36!! He was just saying in the last video that he wanted to surprise Tim with a drift block beater
Hahah oh man I would have just left it there for them
@@vin_trariiiiiiiiiiiight. 🤔
Vin you are king of relatable content . Achievable affordable cars and real everyday bros . Keeping it real brother and loving it .
I look forward to these videos every Thursday! You're the Don, Vin! keep 'em coming!
"protect me from what I want" is the most relatable fucking thing I have ever seen.
I really like how you (and your team) have honed your video making skills.
I could watch you remodel a bathroom and still enjoy the video
Good lesson on flipping. Always stoked to see a new Vin video in the feed!
Dude, to hell with the Silvia...look at that _stunning_ '57 Task Force Chevy in the background after 7:07 😍🤤😍
SO glad you brought back that oil pouring edit! Comedic gold! 😂
This is such a great video to show the difficulties in car flipping even a rare one
I bought my dream car a bit over 3 weeks ago. It's a 1997 Toyota Chaser Tourer-V jzx100. It has some decent mods done to it already by the previous owner. I literally was trying to sell my is300 sportcross to buy a x100 but it didnt work out
Quality of your videos is top. Love the musics you (yeah, the editor) use!
No one freak out, bro said he wants a streetable drift car. Best believe that’ll be a crazy build series
Vin i dont know how to can continue to be the coolest automotive TH-camr right now, what an amazing video 👍👍
Holy smokes, your subscriber count more-than doubled since the last time I checked! Congrats, man. Hope others can follow suite and keep the suspense going to grow their channels
Vin, you did it for the content, which in turn also makes you money.
Sure, but thats not really important to this video. This is realistically how much anyone would make from a flip like this.
streetable drift car! let’s go! vins dual purpose builds are my favorite: the track/street e46 and the drift/street s14. can’t wait to see what’s next.
I seen it at your boys shop, I almost walked over like “a yo, is that Vinnie’s S14!?”😅😂😂
Great video Vin. E36 doesn't do it for me. I enjoy the E30 or E90, so it wasn't a disappointment for me to see it go. Having Amy on was a nice surprise
I love that Chanel - it's proper vlogging !!!!
Love the patina on the lane acclaim coffee table. Such a subtle flex.

Vin so Italian he got pasta in the footwell!
But seriously, you guys make such a cute couple, congrats on both of you doing your own thing.
Thanks, Vin, for saving an S13 that wasn't thrashed by the previous owner. It's worth if you're selling to someone you can buy it back from.
You did it though! 10 percent aint enough, bit of a bummer, but hey. 20 percent should be your minimum on any sale, 10 of the whole is swallowed by your time. Good work Vin.
Easy the coolest guy on TH-cam! And another awesome video 👌
I loved seeing the camera passed back and forth with those rollers!!
Kiss your paint & body guy on the lips for this one lmao. Dude knocked it out of the park. I'm loving how well rounded the content is. The little field trip to the Greddy meet was cool.
I do all the time. 😂
Totally agree. I don’t buy cars for retail value. I just personally love the ones I choose.
s14 time. it's been a while. and it's a nice wrap up.

It's such a clean car. I'm happy you chose not to make it into a drift missile. Hopefully the next owner respects the car enough to not destroy the build.
Hahaha, I always enjoy how you pour oil and how heated everyone gets about it. LOL!

“I sure wouldn’t”
Next week… “I bought a new car!”
It’s an inevitable cycle. ❤
Did you put in the towing to the body shop and the interior cleaning? Small stuffs always adds up in these kind of projects.
Did they ever fix the CarFax?
I never got the love for the 240SX. My dad sold Nissans in the late Eighties and Nineties, and he could not give these things away. He could sell Pathfinders, Z32s, Sentras, and Maximas all day, but no one bought these.
Yeah these were super cheap but now they are hard to find nice ines
Great vid Vin. Hey, did the red Audi Coupe that was on the rack get sold?
lol at the random box with "scotto centers" in the end.
The editing of the video is. Congrats
such a cool car. So clean. Congrats to the new owner
It looks so clean afterwards. But what happened to the original wheels? 😃
Great meeting you at the Greddy Event 🤙

I knew i was in for at least 28 hand smacks with this video.
ill try to get those numbers up next time.
The fact you used to pick up decently clean 240s for like 1500 bucks and now there in the teens is insane makes me sick i had a pig nose notch s13 that needed a few things I paid 800 bucks got it running fixed the little shit and sold it for 2 k still needing a clutch and brakes wow
The whole time i watched you on hoonigan, i never saw your personal garage. I was missing out.
It’s been a long time coming
Wow, a lot of Mk1 Scirocco love in that shop! (my first car as well)
Before and afters are awesome 👏
Okay this is dope, I love the Kouki...
Holy shit, I've been saying kooky for gd 25 years!
The steering wheel-less drift was BOSS MOVE! :D
This video inspired me to fix the misfire on my 318ti S52 swap E36 - I should prob sell it but I can’t get myself to
Sounds like you need to start Driver's Era Car Storage with tons of rack storage so you can keep buying cars you want!
You should add the $$ that you have made with the Video's involved with the build.
Can we get a small update on Amy's IS? If there is any updates?
Coming soon just took it drifting yesterday
Thought you were going to keep this one a while longer, but good flip! On to the next!
Another great video. Now if we can just get back to the sportcross 👀
You're upset about only making $2500, meanwhile I've lost money on every single project car 😂
Hahaha you and most of the workd
@vin_tra it's why I have a real job, cause I suck at that one lol.
Dang that Dodge d100 at the body shop 👍
I look forward to your episodes bro great stuff
This inspired me. I’ll do a video on my K24 swapped S14 and why NOBODY should spend that much for a swap 😂
omg vin that beamer stunt hahaha doing donuts with no steering wheel. that's like your 2nd best stunt next to the seesaw burnout you did on the shart kart lol
deeeeeeep cut
Wow looks amazing after the paint
