I reload with both the 165 ftx and the 170 interlock. I’m getting 2364fps with 16” barrel AR, with in spec powder measure. Have killed many deer with full pass through. Daughter just took one in youth season @ 236 yards had a good half dollar size exit wound.
Awesome. I'll start reloading my .350 Legend this coming spring because I bought the rifle so close to the season. Using factory 170 grain American Whitetails for the time being and its already put meat in the freezer. What dies, primers and powder charges are you using to get those numbers? I'm using an 18 inch barrel Savage 110.
Thank you!! This is what I have been waiting for! This is the round I decided on out of my suppressed ruger American Ranch. I can shoot hole in hole with this setup. It looks goofy the gel expansion but the explosion i get against frozen blocks of ice was far more violent than all other commercial rounds. I need shoulder/high shoulder shots and drop in their tracks. This is the killer for me! Thanks for the video👌🏻
Appreciate the info. Had to return 2 boxes of the Hornady Black recall ammo. This was the ammo I chose as my replacement option. Good to know it's doing what it's supposed to from a 16" barrel 👍
I have been waiting for this video. This is the ammo that my rifle shoots substantially better than all others. For my rifle is was Sub MOA which for a 350 legend is pretty impressive. Im glad that it drives deep. Should be a great bullet option for deer and bear within 250 yards. Would be interesting to see the expansion once velocities start to decrease. Thats the "big thing" regarding this ftx bullet. Expansion even as lower speeds so that you can push the 350 legend to 300 yards.
Maybe if you paint the table a dark color and shine a flash light at a 90° angle, it will highlight the disruption. Also a 1"x1" grid square overlay on the slow motion segment would help with perspective.
I have the same rifle as you, and I have tried five different rounds in mine. This is the only one to give me sub moa results. The other four were 1.75 to 2.5 inches. I was able to harvest a large doe with this round. Complete pass through and a blood trail a blind man could follow for the whole 30yds.
Last summer shot 7 deer with the hornady 170 interlock and only dropped 1 in its tracks. This summer switched to the hornady 165 gr FTX and dropped 6 of 8 in there tracks. Most between 150 and 201 yards. The difference between the 2 is like night and day.
I wasn’t expecting those to drive that deep . I’m not a fan of the ftx bullets out of my 45-70 but they seem to be ok out of that 350. You need to get yourself a 35 Whelen to play with 👏
@@BigdaddyE71 it's a fat slow round , it virtually matches terminal performance of the 3030 . Not impressive like a 270 with 130s but it was never ment to be. For the Midwest deer hunters who shoot 90 percent of the deer 100 and in its a hammer and all you need .
Any penalty from a shorter barrel is all about a cartridge's expansion ratio at that length, case volume to barrel volume. HGs and 'compact' forms (eg: .30 cal & up in ARs) build pressure quickly, but it falls off quickly as bore sizes increase and that ratio is lower. Think of .357 Ultra Mag+ with .223's SAAMI max pressure, but with faster powders than say .30-06 or .308. Pressure falls off more by the time the bullet exits the muzzle with these efficient 'big bore' shorties.
These rounds have all i shot in my 350’s. They shoot really good, my boys and I have taken several deer with them. The only thing i dislike with the 350 is just the small hole it leaves in deer. Struggle to find blood sometimes. Shot placement is everything!
Same. If you go thru shoulder or heart these will work. But if you hit lungs prepare for no blood and long track. Switched to deer season xp and kicked these to the curb..
I’ve shot the FTX and I’m not going to knock it , but I’m sticking to my American Whitetail 170 gr interlock , I get tighter groups at 100 yards with my Ruger American G2 and took a couple of doe last season with my Ruger MPR 350L and they are devastating .
@@PooreBoy74 the price on the Hornady American Whitetail in many cartridges is hard to beat. I have not tried the FTX, but my CVA Scout eats everything else and spits it out in about the same place. Looking to test the Barnes coppers on some living thing next. I would suspect they will hammer whatever like the Win Copper XP did, but will make a bit more visible entry wound(that eXtreme point was invisible until the hide came off). Good luck this season.
Seeing the last two great vids out of order, this makes me think that we need to test out and see if we can test out what barrel length is best for the 350L. If we're getting that close to advertized specs, can we squeeze out another 150-200fps with an optimized barrel length? Personally, I've always been an oddball and preferred 18", but I've been thinking that bc I was at least partially raised by a grandfather that came into adulthood in the 50's.
As you stated, pretty good performance. For a straight walled case I still prefer the 450 Bushmaster. It's a real thumper but if you're recoil sensitive the 350 Legend could be an option.
Hey is there any chance that we can see testing at 50 yards in the near future? I'm interested in the performance when up close in the timber. Maybe exclude the magnum cartridges to save money (who takes 300 win mag that close anyways?) But it'd be interesting, especially the subsonic loads
They work great in both of mine. I do, however, dremel a slight half-circle on the edge of the feeding side of all my metal mags to make sure the rounds clear the lip without incident.
I use a 357 Maximum for my kids t hunt. We have killed a couple dozen deer with it. The Hornady 180 XTP is an amazing deer catcher. I wish Hornady would put it in the Legend.
Hey! Just wanted to say I just purchased the range boss thing and I’m loving all of these videos. Did you happen to be able to locate any of the federal fusion for the 450bm?
Thanks! I did, and tried, but was unable to capture any bullets in up to 4’ of ballistics gel.. they would just zip through. I don’t think they expanded at all, I scrapped the video as there was nothing to really talk about.
@masonoutdoors_masonleather please don't scrap videos, I work at a gun store and I need to know if a bullet fails to expand. Last thing I want is to say "yeah sir fed fusion rocks, you should have good success with this!" And the bullet not expand at all
Looks like an adequate deer hunting option. I imagine it would be good for hogs. If it is equally adequate in accuracy it should be good out to 150 and maybe a bit more. Thank you.
If it were me picking one 350L to rule them all, I’d go with Bear Creek Ballistics copper, either the pointed or round nose doesn’t matter, they outperform just about everything in just about every way in my opinion.
I hand load with the 165 ftx, but I pull the tip out of the bullet drops it down to 162 running them at 2400fps out of ruger average expansion of .722 no tracking at all
@@twoutdoors515 no problem. My experience with budget soft points has been park them just behind the center of the ball joint in the shoulder, and you'll anchor the deer where he stands
