Very nicely done with some great camera work. I always opt for the +P version for defensive use. That extra bit of rearward slide velocity of the +P ammo can help ensure the gun keeps cycling reliably during a moving fight. Recoil-operated guns need something solid to recoil against in order to function reliably. And we can't guarantee we'll always be able to firmly plant both feet, and get a solid two-handed grip in a defensive shooting scenario. That's why LE agencies so often choose the +P 9mm loads. That...and also to allow for guys neglecting to keep their gun clean and properly lubed. You're betting your life on your pistol, right out there at the end of your extended arm. It has got to run, no matter what...and the +P ammo can help keep it running right when you need it the most. Again, thanks. Excellent job...and looking forward to your Gold Dot testing.
Excellent comparison. Very interesting. Your velocity difference is almost the same as our test results a few years ago. The 20-25 fps difference was consistently what I got from 3.5" & 4.25" barrels between standard and +p. We shot into water jugs at 10 feet. We couldn't discern a difference in recovered bullets. I put +p in my daughters 3.5" and the standards in my 3.9" back up home defense & my other daughter's 3.2" micro- compact(recoil??). Great results. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for these reviews. I love bigger calibers, but right now 9mm suits my everyday needs the best. Since I’m working in a small store and living in a condo, I don’t want something too powerful. This makes me feel good about my choice of the 124gr+p HST. I think it can get the job done if needed. Keep up the good work!!
Excellent test and vid! I carry their 124+ P in a P365 as well as a C2 staccato. The HST was a bit more accurate in my 25 yd bench tests than the same weight +P Gold Dot. Either load sets the bar for 124+P in my book.
Another good test, AZ! Personally, I will always choose the higher velocity round, even if it's a fairly small amount because every little bit gives me an advantage no matter how slight it might be. Handguns in general are not great stoppers to begin with so if there is any advantage to be had, I'm going to go for it! Even 25 fps, although it should be more. The HST is a proven performer so it's never a bad choice. My first choice in hollow points will always be the bonded Gold Dot but I certainly wouldn't feel bad if the HST was all I could get! Cheers, jc

Awesome video, HST is some of the best ammo available. I'd just like to point out that Velocity ammo has a sale on HST 124 grain +P for $485 and standard for $490 for 1,000 rounds with free shipping. They also have Gold Dot on sale 124 grain at $550 for 1,000 rounds. I think that's some awesome prices for ammo that can cost more than a buck a round, especially with free shipping. My preference is HST, I've seen Gold Dot fail to expand due to the cavity getting clogged up in some of the testing I've seen on the tube, so from what I've seen it's not as consistent.
If given a choice I’ll always go with the +P version. Penetration is identical with more energy being transmitted into the target. Great test sir, again. 😊👍🏻

Beautiful Flying Sphincters O'Hurt. I feel better about not going to the ends of the earth to find +p. Standard pressure is just right for my P365XL and GX4.
It was very interesting how much more the +P rocked the block with a velocity that didn't seem to be enough of a difference to make a difference. Ditto for the expansion. The angle of impact could've been a factor. That little bit of extra power might also make cycling a bit more reliable in a small gun that's full of lint or otherwise dirty. Great test!

Quick point for those carrying EDC. Kind of demoed that their wasn't enough difference between the standard and +P rounds to make any appreciable difference. Did my client deserve to be shot? That's questionable but did they deserved to be PUNISHED?! I say not.
