Hey Lee, I love your videos and just subbed to Mason Outdoors. I look forward to checking out more content, new and old! I recently purchased the new Ruger American Gen II in 350, and am trying to find a quality round for whitetail in Michigan. Your videos offer the best data I can find on penetration and velocity, thank you for your hard work and consistency. Have you ever considered adding shot groups at 100 yards (or even up to 300 yards) in your videos? I know it's asking a lot with all the work you already put into your videos, but seeing data on MOA and dropping for these rounds from the field would be extremely helpful. Just something to think about. Thanks again for all you do! @masonoutdoors_masonleather
Only had my 350 Legend a couple weeks now. It’s a devastating rifle/round combination. Shooting Herters 180Gr. Rounds. Complete pass-thru’s on South Texas whitetails out to 125 yards. Fixing to buy a few boxes of Hornady’s 170Gr. Rounds. Thank You, for your in depth tests. Great Job!!!
I think decades of .30-30 (and .357) engineering for hunting performance got folded into the .350 Legend, which is why it works great for its intended (whitetail) purpose. Neat cartridge. Thanks for the test!
I’m no expert but I heard that the 350 legend is actually a .355 not a .357. I never fact checked this but the source was pretty reliable. Just thought I’d share what I thought was an interesting fact
Dropped 3 deer with this round this season. Anchored 3 chunky Michigan whitetail (2 doe, 1 buck). Complete pass throughs on all of them, crazy effective!
I bagged 2 whitetail 1 buck and 1 doe this hunting season with a 350 legend. I used Winchester 180 grain power point. The buck was 35 yards dropped on the spot and complete pass through. The doe was 110 yards dropped on the spot and also complete pass through.
Big fan of this ammo. I’ve taken four whitetails with this round so far. 3 dropped in their tracks and one went about 30 yards ( but it was also the worst shot placement). My rifle is a CVA scout in 350 Legend and the Hornady American Whitetail ammo has been superb thus far.
You should check out Bear Creek Ballistics from LeRoy, Michigan. They make two versions of the 350. First is the 160 gr all copper bullet, which i hand load. I shot a 1/2" group at 100yds with my Bear Creek Arsenal (not related to each other) AR. Second is a new 140 gr. that shoots at 2600 fps our of a short barrel.
Hornady inter lock is a bonded bullet. However 350 legend is powerful but its not fast enough to friction melt the lead from the jacket. Staying under 2650fps won't start the melting making a bonded bullet really hold together. Ive never had a "bullet failure" but the faster cup and pour bullets can melt away from the jacketing. We've all heard stories about this at close range deer with core loc bullets... A true cup and pour bullet with little to no bonding. Not a bad bullet but if you shoot under 100 yards maybe not the right bullet. Hornady interlock bullets are crimped to the jacketing. To what extent idk but again ive never had a "bullet failure"
The 350L mimics the 35 Rem and 357 Maximum. The Max being a Pistol caliber upon release. Still lives on in the single shot rifle communities 👍. Don't see why the 350L couldn't serve that role.
@@mot0rhe4d40 Well aware of the 357 Max, it's history, and legacy. The 350L is going to have big trouble filling that void for the simple fact it headspaces on the case mouth. Lack of rim will make it a hard pill to swallow in most revolvers I imagine.

I can remember 5 deer being harvested with this bullet. I reload them to around 2375 fps from a 16" barrel using Hodgdon Lil gun powder. 1 button buck around 50 yds dropped immediately and died quickly. 140# ish buck at 195 yds dropped and died almost immediately, hit in the neck. A smaller doe from around 200yds ran in a small circle and dropped dead about where she was shot. A 110# ish doe hit high lungs from around 180yds ran around 100yds and collapsed. A yearling doe at around 215yds dropped immediately but managed to get to her feet and stumble 10-20 yds as we approached her, she was hit farther back than you would want. All bullets passed clear through including the 2nd shot on the yearling doe from less than 20yds. We're hunting in a straight walled rifle state. This load shoots roughly 1.5" groups from 100yds. I'm hoping to see a review of hornady's 165 gr ftx bullet, but we are very pleased with this 170 gr hornady interlock used in this video. Exit wounds have indicated expansion even at over 200 yards. Thank you for you're great review videos. An update for the 2024 season is a doe at 100 yds that weighed 100#. She sprinted 150 yards across a shelled corn field. You could just about follow the bloodtrail at a slow walk. Hit her in front shoulder and bullet exited through ribs on far side leaving a 3/4" hole through the hide. That exit hole was golf ball sized in the carcass under the hide. I'm still impressed with this load.
I use that same hornady bullet but I reload and use Lil Gun powder I average 2360 fps and almost 2100 energy. From my testing bullet drop is about 5.5” at 200 yards with 1.5” zero. Absolutely zero pressure signs because the powder I use this is a middle of the range load. Bullet expansion catching in milk jugs at a hundred was .65 all day. Wish I had ballistics gel but I make do.
This video was, surprisingly to me. A very well done video. Excellent video quality and execution. Extremely informative and thought out video. Seriously guys Bravo Zulu on the job. I ordered two boxes of this ammo after watching this video. I applaud your thoroughness on this subject matter. Thank you sirs.
6 deer down with 180gr winchesters.. CVA scout 350 . Just bought these for first time and found this vid.. I like that these have better ballistics to 200 vs the winchesters that drop a bit at 200.. Heading to the range in the morning. Hunt scheduled for 5-7th.
U remind me of one of those car models at the state fair trying to sell cars to guys that had one too many turkey legs and way too much beer. That being said, loved the video and the info provided. Thanks.
I’m a big fan of your channel. It has been super informative for me as far as seeing how different hunting rounds perform and has helped me select what I believe to be the pest performer for each caliber I hunt with.
I used this on a buck, He was shot at very close range and bullet performed perfect. Great expansion through the torso without the high velocity meat damage. Hole through spine and ribcage close to 1 inch in diameter Nickel sized exited. Meat not bloodshot from high velocity pass through. I was amazed by the performance of this caliber and bullet. Fired from CVA scout with 16 inch barrel.
Thats awesome , I have had good results with the winchester power points on deer. I have some of this whitetail hornady ammo that I need to try this fall especially since I saw your results with a 16in barrel . Have you ever tested any HSM 350 ammo ?
One last thing I haven’t found any 357 magnum videos. I recently switched to a 357 for my secondary take in the woods with me gun and would love to see some tested
Looking forward to the Hornady black specs through the 350 legend. Thanks for the videos, going to pick up some of the American whitetails after watching this review too!
I will be glad when our gunmakers decide to make classic, good rifles in some of these lesser calibers. I would love to have a model 700, a model 70 or a model 77 in a 30 30ish caliber. There may something older out there but good luck finding it.
Mason, Excellent video with basic information revealed through credible testing procedures. My experience with this load as sub MOA in RUGER bolt and HENRY single shot. With the use in RUGER and BCA AR consistent with just under MOA .9 light wind to 1.75 ( in 10-15 MPH cross wind) Group size without changing aim point. Only problem with Hornady brass was the primer pockets are crimped so tool for expanding was necessary for ease of reloading. Appreciate your content. 🙏🦅🍀✡️
@@masonleather_outdoorshaha weird autocorrect. I’ve shot black bear, caribou, and grizzly bear so far with the 450. Up here in alaska it’s hard enough to get 450 ammo up here don’t think I’ve seen 350 ammo in stock in the nearest city to me.
My son shot a big 8-pointer at about 75 yards using his AR- 15, 350 Legend with 16-inch barrel using Winchester 170 grain soft point. The bullet entered behind the left shoulder, broke a rib, went between the lungs, hit the heart, broke another rib and exited from the other side leaving a 3/4-inch hole. There was a lot of meat damage, a lot more than I like to see. I guess, this is the price you pay for such an efficient cartridge.
I watched the video with the 450 BM using the same line of ammo earlier today and it was a catastrophic failure as far as penetration and holding together but velocity was high. But the same line in 350 L got high marks all around. Pretty interesting to see the difference between the two 😃🦌🦌
Any chance you can try the HSM loading of what looks to be the same bullet? I can't tell what round the HSM uses and it shoots the best in my AR upper. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a video that showed how the 350 mushrooms compared to a 30-30 core-lokt. My experience with Hornady is they aren't as accurate though. Have you found this to be the case?
@@DinoNucci I could argue the same with every ammunition test he has done thus far. Would still be neat to see penetration, expansion, and weight retention at range in a clear and concise manner.
Yes absolutely, I’ve actually already filmed several 12 gauge rifles slug tests, it’ll be a while until they come out though, I’ve got a ton of videos to edit and release. The results were very interesting, I’m looking forward to doing a bunch of sabot slugs as well in the future. I’ll be doing 12, 20 and .410 gauge.
I have a request to make if possible. I saw you tested Winchester 160 gr Defender but could you test the Winchester 160 gr Pawer Max? I know they are the same bullet but it is my understanding that the Powermax is designed for hunting and loaded hotter than the Defemder
Actually I was referring to a 357 from a handgun and just realized you don’t do many of any ballistic gel tests with hand guns, but if you did that would be my request.
I wasn’t really a fan before I started this series but after shooting it quite a bit and seeing the results compared to some other cartridges I’m a fan. I’m looking forward to hunting with it some.
I think the success and performance is due in large part to the bullets being designed specifically for the 350, not adapting bullets designed for other cartridges. Think sticking a 300 win mag 180 grain TSX in a 300 blackout. Extreme example, but I hope you see my point. Lots of .308 bullets go into the blackout that won’t exhibit good performance, but when you run a 110 Barnes tac tx or a 110 vmax, the 300 performs admirably.
I shot 2 boxes of these out of both My Ruger and Howa. At 50 yds the best group I got was 1.4 in, not good. Nope not good at all. Most groups we're 1.7 in or bigger. Winchester may be weaker but they group much much better. When you go out 100 yds or more I could only guess what they would be?
Just slightly faster than a 170 gr 30-30. Conventional wisdom says the 30-30 might penetrate a little more due to greater SD. The expanded diameter on 30-30 will probably be a bit less, since it starts out smaller. I may have to try some 30-30 in my 336 for sccuracy. I can't hunt with it here in Kalifornia, but it would still be a good load for animal defense or to use out of state. Nice video
so have been using 350 180g win power points at 1762ftlb but today i shot the 170g Hornady and was like wow these suckers are giving more felt recoil. makes sense now if they are providing higher speed and energy. same 16in barrel
Those bullet weights and velocities seem to be identical to .30-30... but without the sectional density or penetration ability from the smaller bore. For what they are, quite good.
In several states you can't hunt on public with .30-30 and in some states you can't hunt on private or public with .30-30. I have one for each of my kids, and they have both taken deer with them. The .30-30 I don't think is typically sub 1moa eithee where as all of the 350s i have shot were sub1 and that includes an ar upper and a third bolt gun.
@@tray22 I know the reason 350 Legend exists, it has to do with unconstitutional firearms and ammunition regulations. Let's just call those cockroach rules made by cockroach politicians for what they are: ugly, unconstitutional infringements which need to be penalized with the force of law. In what universe was a firearm infringement ever passed which made the public "safer"? But that's always been the argument of those cockroaches who passed the cockroach unconstitutional laws. I encourage everyone who reads this to determine (at least in their own mind if nothing else) to make this issue crystal clear to yourself. It's not just, right, or constitutional. That aside, the .30-30 is a better cartridge compared to 350 Legend in 170gr bullets. That's just physics, really. That was my point I guess. As far as .30-30 accuracy is concerned, it's only less accurate because most of the rifles it has been fired from are iron sights, not because the rifle isn't capable of better. Also the cartridges weren't loaded with "precision" in the marketing. The manufacturer isn't careful about some fancy idea that someone is going to shoot precision matches with a .30-30 or snipe prairie dogs at 400 yards. hahaha! So naturally the bullets are less precise, higher drag, and the cartridge casings are loaded with economy in mind, mostly. There will be a lot more variables per cartridge in .30-30 than in something like a 7mm PRC with ELD-X bullets. _Mark and Sam After Work_ souped up an old Glenfield .30-30 with factory barrel and he was popping a plate at just short of a mile, shot after shot. He developed his own hand loads and was using spitzer bullets, single-feed, but that's something anyone else could do with some care.
@tray22 yep I'm in southern MI and up until a few years ago it was bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader (special season in second rut) only. Now we can use 350 legend and 450 bushmaster. My ar-15 chambered in 350 arrives today 💪
@@masonleather_outdoors I agree - have the same rifle in 300 BO. Shot 3 deer last year - 2 at 75 yards and 1 at 125 yards. The 125 got away (know it was a good hit). I used 110 VMAX and it didn’t penetrate the other side - stuck in hide. Bullets flattened like a quarter- which is what they are supposed to do. I have some 125 grain hollow points that I’ll try this year. 300 BO is NOT 30-30 - and by the numbers definitely not 350 Legend. Great videos! Howdy from Fredericksburg TX
@@ronwinn879 so would you still recommend 300 blackout for whitetails? The reason I ask is because I've got some youngsters coming of deer hunting age and am debating if they should use my 300 blackout or if I should get them a 350 legend
@@BustedLimbOutdoors If you have the means I’d pick up the 350 Legend (especially with the promotion Ruger has going now). With that said I’ve only shot 3 deer with a varmint load. The 110 grain V-Max did exactly what it was supposed to do - dumped its energy and flattened. However, physics cannot be cheated. Just don’t think it had enough gas on the deer at 125 yards. I’ll also add that my heart shot must not have been “perfect.” The 300 BO isn’t as forgiving. (Note - I have the same Ruger Ranch rifle in 300 BO - it’s shooting 1” at 100 yards. Not the smoothest action but damn good accuracy). 8:53 I grew up with a 250 Savage as my first substantial deer rifle. Where I grew up in SW Texas we typically shot out from 100- 300 yards. (250 Savage is like a hotter 243). I’m in Texas Hill Country and shots are typically 50 to 150 yards. I am going to try a harder 125 grain hollow point through the Ruger Ranch rifle. I’ll let you know how that goes.
@@BustedLimbOutdoors. As a side note - I’m bringing my old Marlin 336 out of retirement. Going to add a scope (yes, I know sacrilege) and will compare it to 300 BO. I’m pretty sure I know which one will knock down deer better. Our go to “big” deer gun in SW Texas is a 270. I’ve used it in the hill country. While my boys are on a 243 and 250 Savage now, my goal is to find them something close to the 30-30 in case a shot goes “off course.” The best thing like the 30-30 is probably the 30-30! Ha ha. The 350 is next followed by 300 BO.
My neighbor has a friend who has tracking dogs that he is Licenced to use to find wounded deer. He says 85 to 90 percent of wounded deer he Tracks were shot with the 350 and 400 legend.
A guy I work with uses a single shot Henry 350 legend with this ammo. Hes tagged out for the last 3 seasons with it and all were short recoveries. Last year during an ammo shortage I went to a local store and they were out of almost everything but had a ton of 350 legend ammo. Almost bought one just because of that even though you dont have to use straight wall in my state
Nice gun and leather! Too bad the rifle doesn't have a 22" barrel AND a more compact magazine (lower capacity of maybe 4 tounds). It might give a little more power in a easier carrying rifle. Good penatration and expansion....AND Retained WEIGHT

There was a lot of meat damage, a lot more than I like to see. I guess, this is the price you pay for such an efficient cartridge.
Great video!
Thanks!
Thank You ...
Interlock is kind of like core lockt. Cut and core but with minor locks in the casting.
Thanks!
Only Ammo I use with my Winchester 350 Legend. Not only is it accurate, but delivers a massive hole in anything I shoot.
Really interested in the hornady black 150 gr . Mason you got this lol!
Love your channe!. I just bought some Federal Fusion 150 gr for my .270 Win. I hope you test it. Natchez has it for $30 a box.
Glad to be of service! I’ll certainly test it eventually, based on other results I’m sure it would do great
@masonleather Thank you Sir. I'll look at your leather products as well. Do you do a black bear on them?
Thanks Mason
Glad to be of service!
Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a video that showed how the 350 mushrooms compared to a 30-30 core-lokt. My experience with Hornady is they aren't as accurate though. Have you found this to be the case?
Nice looking mushrooms
Absolutely
With a 20" Barrel you would have had around 2800 fps + in velocity.
Would love to see a review of the Hornady 165 gr FTX for the 350 legend
I had horrible luck with those, they never opened up I switched to the Barnes and they are amazing and always open and they are an all copper bullet.
Merry Christmas Mason. Would you use the Hornady 170 or win PowerPoint 180 on bear?
I love your testing set up and process. Is there any chance of you doing the same test but with shotgun slugs in the future?
@@DinoNucci yes but would like to see his testing methods on things like sst, accutip, copper solid, power shock, etc
@@masonleather_outdoors thank you very much
Any chance you could test the Hornady 165 grain FTX 350 Legend?
Arkansas is talking about adding them in muzzle loader season. I hope not!! If i ever bought one. I would go with the 450 bushmaster round.
That is absolutely a bonded bullet. I call this round the .357 magnum-magnum.
355 it's a 9mm
@@luketilley9137 It's not metric, that's why it's called 350. 35caliber.
Surprised it didn't blow up like the 450 version did
I have a request to make if possible. I saw you tested Winchester 160 gr Defender but could you test the Winchester 160 gr Pawer Max? I know they are the same bullet but it is my understanding that the Powermax is designed for hunting and loaded hotter than the Defemder
Can you try the new hornady black 150 grain in 350 Legend?
The 118 grain Xtreme penatrator create a huge shock wave
Actually I was referring to a 357 from a handgun and just realized you don’t do many of any ballistic gel tests with hand guns, but if you did that would be my request.
How heavy can the twist rate handle . Im considering 350 since all the 9x39 is gone
I crap on the 350 legend quite a bit, but I gotta say, it is actually quite impressive the results those little cartridges produce.
@@phild9813 I'd never have any use for one, but I can say that about most calibers
Nice video
Glad to be of service and thanks for your support! Please share the video, it’s a big help!
Where did u find a 20 round for the 350 I can’t find one for mine
so have been using 350 180g win power points at 1762ftlb but today i shot the 170g Hornady and was like wow these suckers are giving more felt recoil. makes sense now if they are providing higher speed and energy. same 16in barrel
Im getting 2250 out of mine with 16 in barrel
Good confirmation
What's the velocities and energy figures at 100, 150, and 200 yards?
Those bullet weights and velocities seem to be identical to .30-30... but without the sectional density or penetration ability from the smaller bore. For what they are, quite good.
Higher B.C so they keep the energy at 100 yards better
@@matthewclark263 Any handgun hunting allowances?
I have been trying to decide what to get for the wife. Either a 243 or a 350 legend in a compact bolt rifle 🤔
I was somewhat surprised at the recoil out of an AR platform, felt greater than my .308…not sure if this helps but thought I would mention it.
@ a 350 legend felt like more recoil than a 308? What? A 350 Legend has less recoil than a 243.
350 Legend has really been surprising me by its performance. Really interested in comparing it against 300 blackout
350 is in another league, 300 Blackout isn’t in the same ballpark of capability.
I grew up with a 250 Savage as my first substantial deer rifle.
My neighbor has a friend who has tracking dogs that he is
Licenced to use to find wounded deer. He says 85 to
90 percent of wounded deer he
Tracks were shot with the 350
and 400 legend.
There are several deer in my freezer that would agree that this round is very dangerous lol
.357 ultra mag 💥
The fps is way better than the WIn XP
Hornady 165's please 😅
Hornady ammo,is always loaded on hot side,it all is
A guy I work with uses a single shot Henry 350 legend with this ammo. Hes tagged out for the last 3 seasons with it and all were short recoveries. Last year during an ammo shortage I went to a local store and they were out of almost everything but had a ton of 350 legend ammo. Almost bought one just because of that even though you dont have to use straight wall in my state
Here’s my 2500 fps load, lol if you’re getting above box numbers in a 16” I bet it’s easily 100-150 fps more in an 18-20 inch barrel
But it's still about a 150 yard rifle.
Not bad!
80% of all US deer killed are at under 65 yards
I must have missed the dangerous part
Nice gun and leather! Too bad the rifle doesn't have a 22" barrel AND a more compact magazine (lower capacity of maybe 4 tounds).
It might give a little more power in a easier carrying rifle.
Good penatration and expansion....AND Retained WEIGHT
These things keep on truckin a little too far....
Things are the tractor trailer of 350 loads
I don't like the way you said cicadas.
This is another "why" round.
Some states require straight walled cartridges with a length of 1.8 inches.
👍🏻👍👍
