    I learned on these engines before they were Detroit’s. They were GM Diesel. I still love them. So far ahead of their time before WWII.

    Great job and thanks for including your grandsons in the restoration process. My grandsons have no interest in engines.
    I worked on tugboats for 40 years, and almost every generator or tow winch engine was a 71 series Detroit Diesel. Tough, rugged, reliable engines, and simple to maintain. I was given a tour of an old sailing ship in New York City that had been converted to a sand show. It had an anchor windlass added to it at some point, and the windlass was powered by a 1-71 Detroit Diesel, which I didn't even know existed.
    Also, I worked at a foundry in the mid-1970s where the blocks and heads for the 6-71s and 8V-71s were cast. I always looked at the DDs on the tugboats and wondered with pride if I was working at the foundry when these engines were being cast.

    I just finished bringing a 371 back to life after sitting for 10+ years. I had to remove all of the fuel lines under the valve cover and use a combo of carb cleaner, PB Blaster and DW40 to get the injectors unstuck. After that it would run but gave off white smoke as in the beginning of this video until it would begin to wet stack if the throttle was not adjusted. After installing a pressure gauge on the secondary filter housing I discovered that the fuel pressure was all over the place. Cleaned the fuel pump and discovered the pressure relief valve was stuck now it runs like it was stolen. All it cost me was a bag full of cleaner & lube cans 2 fuel filters and a oil change now do that with a high tech modern diesel power unit
    Nice 2 cylinder you have. To many get scrapped when they will run with a days work.

    • @RichardGoodman
      @RichardGoodman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the nice note. Still not sure why mine starts out on one cylinder but about to re-fire and do more work on it. White smoke is unburned fuel. My fuel pressure is 50 and steady. Dick

    I want one of those just to tinker with.. please use WD-40 instead of ether if you really think you need to use something. Other alternative is to hold it in the shutdown position and crank it over several times, this will help get fuel up into the engine and also warm the cylinders making it easier to fire.

    • @thespiritof76..
      @thespiritof76.. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've heard that a diesel will get addicted to any starter fluid and will not crank without. Have you ever heard thst

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thespiritof76.. It is sort of like that.. unfortunately the ether can damage the engine, causing it to rely on ether to start because the compression starts to suffer.. you are putting a fuel (ether) in it with very little lubrication.. diesel fuel lubricates the ether does not, that is the big take away. That is why WD is a bit better, its at least a light oil with some lubricating properties.

    what a great way to spend time with your children and grandchildren, them old Detroit's are unfortunately a thing of the past, I cut y teeth on 6 & 8-71s & 92 series engines, I think the smallest I had ever worked on was a 3-71 that was in a spotting truck, what a sound it made! screamin Demons is what we called them. because even though they were only turning the standard 2100 or so RPM they sounded like they were running at 10000 RPM just being 2 stroke I guess. I still have some injector tools etc in my tool box for them things.

I've enquired about the Engines and absolutely no one has any idea who put in the p.o. I believe it is rated at 68 hp at 2,100 rpm. When used as a low speed generator (1,200 rpm) it is around 25 hp.

    Never use starting fluid on a diesel, destroys the valves. Use WD40 to assist

      @@RichardGoodman I wouldn't think the cost would be high if you used salvaged parts... Say a large 240-480v DC motor voltage regulator. Or just a 12-24vt forklift motor and a power inverter...
      I love the sound, nothing brings back the childhood memories like the sound of a detroit. I could hear the bus coming from 3 blocks away and new my daddy was home....
      I would put one in a pick-up truck if I had one.

      @@thespiritof76.. Part of the problem is how to attach the generator to the engine. If the generator has the same SAE flange as the engine then the only problem is that the speed (RPM) must be correct. My engine is a 1200 rpm engine which means I need a 6 poll generator in order to get 60 hz. Most out there are 1800, 4 poll. I have a 2 poll 10KW generator but it needs 3600 rpm input. See the problem?
