its not gonna sound like a 2 stroke gas engine because these engines use turbos for all of their compression. no odd passage ways and compressing under the crank case, no mixed fuel. its common for snow mobile engines to use these designs on gas 2 strokes because it allows them to get proper oiling. EDIT: turbo OR a kind of supercharger i believe. i think this one uses a supercharger.
@@raycert07They use a roots supercharger not as a supercharger, but just to get scavenge airflow. An old engine like this one will have a two valve head, while much later they developed 4 valve heads. On these engines the valves are exhaust, while the intake air flows in through ports in the cylinder liners. The exhaust valves are opened a few degrees before the piston crown gets down to the intake ports to relieve residual combustion pressure in the cylinder. Then when the piston uncovers the intake ports the fresh air flows in to push the exhaust out the valves. Then the exhaust valves are closed just before the piston covers the intake pirts to start pressuring the cylinder to atmospheric on a naturally aspirated engine such as this one.

That is a beautiful engine and i happened on this video because I love to hear the semi diesel running 1 cylinders and I happened on this video I never even knew about this engine and I'm glad that I could see and hear It cuz I'm sure that I'll probably never see one except on a video but wow I can only imagine that thing and 18 ft wooden hull boat pushing me down the river only thing bad about it I would probably fall asleep listening to that beautiful sound of that engine and run a ground! Thanks again for sharing and getting a rare old timer running!
Cool engine. Was depressing hearing that a bunch of these went down with their ships. I know some ships were/are used as target practice and therefore sunk, but that seems like more a means to get rid of them than essential for training. The military says the ships provide habitats for fish, but corporations also said that about dumping millions of used tires in the ocean off the coast of Florida (which ended up becoming an evironmental disaster, destroying the coral reef they were dumped on, and would cost millions to remove even a portion of them). Just the scrap metal value alone seems like a giant waste, unless ship breaking for metals alone is cost prohibitive.
Maybe it's because it's a single cylinder, it doesn't have the typical Detroit 2-cycle sound. It sounds a bit like yard equipment, to me. Thank you for the demonstration, and the history. I would not want to have to hand crank a diesel!
I have the Hobart generator that bolts on to that. It's got a 4-cylinder Hercules motor on it right now. The generator has been cleaned up and new brushes
...hmmm...very nice...but there are few videos of the Detroit 1-71 engines online...and I can't find any that have the rev. counter / tachometer working...I wonder why?
They may be wort a few bucks. But most have nothing connected to them and are useless. Then again running it puts ware on it and parts are few. The 2 cycle diesel is great but can't as I know ever make pollution specs. Oil industry does not want efficient engines any way.
@@cdjhyoung but it doesn't suck, it blows. Yes, the point of the blower was for cylinder exhaust scavenging, but that is accomplished by pressure, not vacuum. Exhaust doesn't go thru the blower.
I think that is the slowest I have ever heard a Detroit idle. It actually runs slow enough to sound like a four stroke. Thats a sweet little engine.

Being a one lunger it will not have the same higher sounding the multi cylinder detroit engines have. They will idle at 450RPM no problem.

There was a number of these used as marine propulsion engines. Gray Marine was marketing them with a twin disc marine gearbox throughout the 40’s
This is one of the most rare GM engines along with the 6- 110s and 8V53s. I know where there's a 1-71 in Brisbane Australia.
would it be for sale
They made 12v53s as well those are ultra rare
6-110 running a pump to this day less that 10 min drive from me..
6-110s were used in S18 Euclid motor scrapers.
That made a huge difference from before!
It sure did .
I saw this engine at Delaney and Ahlf many times when I took my 1980 KW with 8V-92TA to be tuned up.
Good people down at Delaney and Ahlf . I knew Tim for quite a while

There isn't any better sound than a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel screaming.
Neat little engine very rare I know of at least one down here in New Zealand I have seen it it is all complete and in running condition
Mean bro

It would be nice to have something to put a load on it and let it do what makes it happy, thanks for the video
Would've liked to hear it at 2000 revs.
Nice Gemmy! Needs a generator on it and use it for back power ! I would love it own one of these !

Very impressive! Very smooth for a single cylinder. I guess it's because it's a two-stroke.
Tom you have a lot of neat toys ! I’m envious....
That’s a nice engine you have there! I imagine it doesn’t have many hours of run time!!
Beautiful piece! The Unicorn of detroit's!
Wow she sounds so good after that tune up!!!!!

it sounds like the most badass motorcycle
Ol 2 stroker would love this. He has one he just got running
Nice!! Worked on and seen a lot of Detroit's but never one of these.
Hola pedro molina le saluda de honduras tengo 30 años de vender repuestos para detroit y pienso que son los mejores motores
hi there nice little motor john
I wonder where it went!
Always loved the 71s! You must have had a real hard time lifting it??
I think there's more than 25 leftovers i know of over 5 , not counting the ones on the internet .
...hmmm...very nice...but there are few videos of the Detroit 1-71 engines online...and I can't find any that have the rev. counter / tachometer working...I wonder why?
The 1-71 tach rotate counter clockwise , that is the hard part to find.

I knew I guy that had 3 of these, would never part with them
Sweet!
Very cool!
i'd love to have one.
Do these have a water pump for cooling or do they thermosiphon?
Water pump
How come the tach doesn't work?
Nice

do you still have this engine ? thanks .
Gone to Florida
Is this a four stroke or two stroke? Also does it not have a blower?
2 stroke and yes has a blower .
@@rileydog362 Actually, shouldn't the set up on this engine really be called a 'sucker' because it is used to extract exhaust from the cylinders?
@@cdjhyoung no, it's still used the same way as other Detroit blowers, from the look of it.
@@cdjhyoung but it doesn't suck, it blows. Yes, the point of the blower was for cylinder exhaust scavenging, but that is accomplished by pressure, not vacuum. Exhaust doesn't go thru the blower.
The blower introduces fresh air at just above atmosphere at the same time as purging the exhaust, hence rootes style blower 👍
How much horsepower does it have ?
Depending on the vintage, between 30 and 35.
