She sure is purdy. Deserves a spot in that garage.
Ty, So good to hear from you!! You bet, she is in the garage!
I wonder how much it cost new back then.
I believe it was a little over $2,000.
What a great story!! Can’t wait to see this one come to life!
How long dose this take think it been 5 years now. Everyone else dose this in one hour on TH-cam :)
Sorry! So much has happened and the cost of everything is off the chain! Bobbi has 3 of these vans and we work a little on two of them. Maybe after the election things will change.
diesel is pretty dang cool; is a solvent and a lubricant at the same time
how did you press on the water pump pulley ? did you tap it down with a pipe ?
Trying to remember! Let me check with Bob and see if she remembers.
Sorry but I am not sure. I think the height was correct! I know that I did a water pump on my 2-71 diesel and I had to use a press to get it correct. Richard goodman
Its not the destination, its the journey... Enjoy your time together.
Followed along great videos very informative and fun ~~ so did you ever finish 1965 Chevy sportvan where is it at today
We got side tracked and it is sitting in my garage. Bobbi has gotten married and bought two more 1965 vans. At some point in time we will get started again. Thanks for watching!
Great job and thanks for including your grandsons in the restoration process. My grandsons have no interest in engines. I worked on tugboats for 40 years, and almost every generator or tow winch engine was a 71 series Detroit Diesel. Tough, rugged, reliable engines, and simple to maintain. I was given a tour of an old sailing ship in New York City that had been converted to a sand show. It had an anchor windlass added to it at some point, and the windlass was powered by a 1-71 Detroit Diesel, which I didn't even know existed. Also, I worked at a foundry in the mid-1970s where the blocks and heads for the 6-71s and 8V-71s were cast. I always looked at the DDs on the tugboats and wondered with pride if I was working at the foundry when these engines were being cast.
What a great story. Thank you for sharing with me. Plan of getting it out again for another run soon. Sincerely, Richard Goodman
A true " bewd bewd " engine
You just have to LOVE a 2 cycle!!
My dozer was a built by Garwood ...Allison drive frain 10 for blade ...super well built..Manuel angle shift blade...best machine l ever owned...we called the engine our bud bud engine because AR an idle it would just ho bud bud bud bud so quietly but man did that thing have power!!! Peace to ya...Ray
Noticed your Kubota has a grapple? Was it farm made…?
It was purchased from a company in Florida (I think) and it is the best attachment I ever bought!
Mine is way louder….did you get your injectors cleaned and tested…?
That young man was very attentive and excited to turn that key. Made me cry. Feel the same way working with my Dad.
Thank you! I so enjoy sharing what I know!! Sincerely Richard Goodman
hi there had 1 of those moved to a 471 and a 671 on my sawmills good show john
Thank You! Engine has a great history.
The first thing you need to learn your grand children is to not use hearing protection. Eye and hearing protection are for sissies.
Love seeing the young hanging out with the older generation and actually learning stuff about these (and any)diesel engines!👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧🔩📏
Looks and sounds great. And as for the oil leaks, if 2 is all you've got tgen id say you're in good shape. They didn't get the nicknames "driptroit diesel" and "green leaker" for nothing!
Thanks for the reply. It is a fun piece of history!
Check the spark plugs!
Having trouble finding the correct heat range!
I wish I started and ran that well.😋
I think its funny how just about everyone from down south is pleasant has manners and is respectful while just about everyone else is a stuck up as*hole 🤷♂️
NEVER USE EITHER ON A DIESEL! Stick a torch, propane, butane, or acetylene in the air cleaner for 10 seconds then bump the starter and its running with no engine damage.
2:58 - Got that hand ready for a runaway.
I had a dozer with this engine ...my neighbor's made fun of it being a two cylinder but it had plenty of power and it was the best , most reliable engine that I ever had.
Yes, what an engine. Thank you for viewing.
I have that same motor…what size dozer was yours…?
2 cycle supercharged.
I like the 65 sportvan but the 65 handibus is even better, I'm impartial to the handivan and handibus over their chevy van and sportvan siblings as my 69 108 is a handivan I hope you keep the gmc letter emblems on her nose
I also have a 1988 GMC van but love the 65's!
@@RichardGoodman I like the 1st Gen the most , I sold my 66 a year ago. My dad gave me my 69 108 in June '91 for my high school graduation present. He is the original owner. I've had a few 3rd Gen g10s 88 was the newest Although I love the front end as well as the back end of a 64-66 more than a 67-70 the taillights are what I like the most as they are the same as a 60-66 chevy c10 . I just wish they made 108 versions of the 1st Gen vans then they would be perfect
Yo tengo un detroi de la serie 471 y uno de la serie 453 siempre en las mañana son duros para la partida en los camiones duran poco de su vida util y aca en chile es muy caro los repuesto
Hey bud did you ever get a chance on getting me something about the trailer hitch ?
So, did you ever get someone to do the bodywork? Is this project on hold?
We have not done very much in the last year. The paint and body work keeps getting more expensive. Bob has a total of "3" of these vans now but her focus is on getting married and building a house. I will talk to her on doing an update. Thank You for watching. Sincerely, Richard Goodman
@RichardGoodman Congtratulations Bobbie!
I've heard of guys cleaning motorcycle tanks by filling them with nuts and bolts and Coca Cola and putting them in a cement mixer!
Que bale el motor gm detroi de dos cilindro
You are the coolest, Uncle Dick! Johnny and I enjoy these videos!!
It is so good to hear from you! So glad you got to see! Have you seen some of the others with Bobbi??
Best just do a rebuild on it. 👌🫵
First I have seen this second van. You make all the problems easy to fix.
Where did you find your seriel number? My data tag is gone but can't find a Stamp either
Hi Richard n Sweetheart. I think I am commenting on #4 but can’t get back to it. Can you provide a link to the fuel pump you used and how is it working ? Also I noticed your temp sender is in the Ther, Housing. Mine WAS in the head right beside exh outlet which is a hotspot. I got a new ther dome cover with sensor thread in it and the reading is lower, I like it better. Henry
Hi Henry, The fuel pump was purchased on E-Bay and was less then $20.00 So far it is working well. One of our vans has the fuel pump on a switch that can be turned on and off when wanted while the other runs whenever the ign. is on. As long as the temp. gage in below the thermostat you should be ok. Thank You for watching!
I think with a diesel if you want it to start and it is having some trouble you should use pb blaster or wd-40 should do the trick.
Come back!!
Thank you for showing her live up to her name!!
She smokes! Try her on heavy ship oil! Nah! She will be fine! Run her straight through a 500 gallon tank to break her back in!! Wow! She lives!!!!
Easy on the ether man!!
I think the old Detroits love it!!
Was that a beer or a highball the neighbor was drinking??
This is awesome can you send me how too on the tralior hich ??? i need one for my 65
Hi Ricky, Do you need a receiver type hitch (2" square)? I did this one because we are making a generator platform to be able to run A/C stuff and supply power for off grid camping. Happy to supply you any info you need to make one but do you need the same as I have?
@Richard Goodman yes sir I do your is awesome I want too do the same
@@RichardGoodman just let me know Richard
Hi Ricky, This might be hard to do! BUT I will try. I built it as I went along so I have no prints. I will try to draw something up for you.
@Richard Goodman oh man that's ok if it's too much h trouble 😳 no worries
I have a 66 sportvan deluxe sitting in the yard in NC. Rough shape but still has the original paint and the glass is intact and never wrecked.
They are cool vans hope you can restore!
Very cool. I love these old Vans. I have a 1965 G10 panel that I bought in 1991. Keep the vids coming. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words!
I’ve been watching the sportvan series so I can start working on my own 67 108 custom with an inline 6 and I want to say thank you! Thank you for the tips and processes to restoration. This video gives me the confidence to check my own hubs, bearings, and brakes!
Also, nice Yamaha Vino back there! Had one of those as well
@@adamcrosthwaith Thank you for your kid words! If I can help in any way, let me know.
If my remark stopped you from posting I'm sorry I didn't think it was that bad
Thanks for the tip about pulling the inner bearing.
If I can help, let me know!
Did you ever finish the van? I been looking for something like this for a long time. You gave me a lot of information....Thanks
Sorry for the delay! We have more coming as we are getting ready to drive.
qwantoz hp??
I believe it is rated at 68 hp at 2,100 rpm. When used as a low speed generator (1,200 rpm) it is around 25 hp.
@@RichardGoodman obrigado!! Aq do Brasil.
