    I really wish they made the Palma in color. I’ve been considering the Palma for months now and if they released a colored version, I’d jump so fast.

      That would be cool. It seems to be getting a lot of attention from the tech press so maybe they will do a colour version in the future.

    Thanks for the review, Olly. I was waiting to see what you thought and just ordered through your affiliate link. My kindle is on its last legs and I wanted a device other than my phone/ipad on which I could use several different reading apps. This fits the bill quite nicely.

    I don't believe they can read Apple Books. There isn't an app for Apple Books. As I get older, I like the option on Books to increase the space between lines on the page. I open to anything that lets me read easier, but defined line spacing is a must have at my age. I enjoy your videos and presentation. Always nice to see someone who prefer ebooks.

    • @kbhasi
      @kbhasi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, because as far as I know, Apple Books is exclusive to Apple devices.
      I did get DRM-free books out and imported into Calibre, but there were some DRM-protected books that I couldn't get in as I didn't know how to do so, and from what I just searched, it seems they use EPUB, PDF, and their own proprietary format, but with their own proprietary DRM.
      For me, most of the stuff I had there were random free stuff I found browsing around the store, as I had yet to find my fiction reading interests at the time and switched to Kindle shortly after, then Kobo and Play Books.

    Looks good. Is It true it takes about a minute to start up each time you switch it on though? Heard that somewhere, and it would be a dealbreaker.

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The power saving settings by default power the unit off after 10 mins of non use (or something like that) but it’s easy to change it so it just turns the screen off instead. That means it wakes up again instantly when you open the case

    • @111MarkD
      @111MarkD 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @CriminOllyBlog
      Your feedback on battery use is encouraging. But how did you have the power saving set up out of interest? Did you disable turning off the device so that it started up instantly when you opened the cover?
      If not, how did you find the wait for startup?
      I'm currently on the fence between this and the Libra Colour. Battery life and delay between opening the cover and reading are my main reservations about this one versus the Kobo.
      My current device is the first gen Kindle Oasis which I got in 2017.
      Thanks!

    Is it possible to have the Boox Go Color 7 show the cover of the book you’re reading when it is asleep? I quite like that feature on my Kindle, but it’s not the kind of detail reviewers tend to mention

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      A lot of people have asked that actually. I don’t think it’s possible to do it automatically, but you can manually change the Lock Screen image whenever you want to

    • @amandawilson2303
      @amandawilson2303 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One thing you could do is set the Screensaver to transparent. It will then show whatever you had open last. It's not a great workaround as you'd have to go back to the cover page, but you could bookmark the page you were on so that you can find it again when you get back to reading. Since the device is an open system I'm not sure the software will ever support what Kindle does with the screen saver since that's a closed system

    • @kbhasi
      @kbhasi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can't actually do that, but there are workarounds to simulate having the feature, such as one that involves KOReader when using that, or using a transparent screen lock and going back to the cover page, or just setting the screensaver to copies of book covers.
      To be fair, they do allow users to load in their own images to use as screensavers, so I instead have a bunch of reading-related images and screenshots of favourite illustrations and comic art (from fiction books i had read).

      I could list some of the sources, but I can't remember exactly where I got those specific images I use.
      I have a set I picked up from another BOOX user in a Reddit comment, then besides that, I have images that were done by some illustrators and intended to be put up as mini posters in primary/elementary school libraries, of which I have some that were done by Sarah McIntyre (posted in an old post on her blog) and Jarrett Lerner (posted on the "Art" page on his website). Besides those, there were some decks from "E-ink Essence" that they sell on their online shop, specifically a deck titled "Bookdwellers".

    It's too "busy" for me and a not forever device due to having Android.
    I've been more and more drawn to my Kobo Libra 2 over my Kindle Paperwhite and Scribe purely due to the busy advert filled nature of Kindles. I want a ereader for reading only.

      @@CDubya.82 that's kind of an odd take. Android opens up a lot more possibilities rather than locking you don't on a specific platform like kindle. To each his own I guess but I'd much rather have android with the play store than proprietary OS and forced to buy from a specific store

      @@captknuckles9723 trouble is other reviewers have said that the kobo and kindle apps aren’t as good as on their own e-readers and you can only adjust them so much … for instance the text on the kindle app is a bit light and could do with some weighting but there’s no way to do this … so you may be getting a more versatile device but the reading experience won’t be as good as a dedicated e-reader … depends what you want I suppose …..

    The ghosting is unacceptable I am afraid. I pre-ordered and had to send it back and very disappointed as I really liked the look and feel of the device. The fact that they think it’s necessary to provide an option to manually refresh (via the pin wheel menu) on the screen says it all. Additionally the Kindle or the Kobo apps are not as functionally rich as on the native devices (not a lot Boox can do about that though)

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @riasimpson3874
      @riasimpson3874 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@CriminOllyBlog I have the Boox Go Color 7 and I don't have ghosting issue when it comes to reading books or comics. Only really experienced it on website browsing. But I would think you wouldn't want to do web surfing or playing videos anyway on the Boox GC7. You would want a tablet to do that. I was contemplating the Kobo Libra Color but no microsd cards and a bit more extra effort in book transfers made me go the Boox route. Pretty happy with mine so far. The refresh frequency rate is very helpful with ghosting.
