I love Crystal Skull but I can understand why people may not like it. I think that Crystal Skull, unlike Dial, has a lovely message about how life may take away things but can still give back. Dial just gives Indy back half of his ending after he learns nothing. Also, Ford in Skull still has the same charm, energy, and looks in his mid-60s that can still sell bim jumping from cars and throwing punches. The age actually helps sell him, along with writing, as the same Indy we know but a bit more experienced and wiser.
_Crystal Skull,_ while not nearly on the same level as the Original Trilogy still tops _Dial of Destiny_ for three main reasons: 1.) Irina is simply a better and better _utilized_ Villain than Voller, who makes very little impression/impact, despite poor Mads Mikkelsen doing the best he can 2.) Indy, while older, slower and grumpier, is still basically the same character as he used to be. He is not treated like a Joke 3.) While the "Riding into the Sunset"-Ending to _Last Crusade_ was perfect, the ending to _Crystal Skull_ isn't too bad either and also quite definite: Indy becomes Dean at his old University, he marries Marion and he has a Son who may or may not inherit the Fedora at some point. The Movie ended at a happy place. _Dial of Destiny,_ meanwhile, mostly treats Indy like a relic, constantly upstaged and belittled by Helena, a thoroughly unlikeable Character and constant detriment to this film. In addition, he starts off the movie as a simple Professor again - at an obviously less prestigious University to boot - and his Students are bored by him and his colleagues want his old ass gone. Worst of all: His and Marions' Marriage has been all but ruined because their Son has been killed - both of these events happened off-screen (a Situation eerily familiar to what happened to Han and Leia between _Return of the Jedi_ and _Force Awakens)._ Sure, the movies' coda shows the two of them reconciling, but they are still at a worse place than they were at the end of _Crystal Skull,_ except that they're even older and that their Bloodline is extinct. So, yeah... *that* wasn't neccessary. I like to consider _Crystal Skull_ to be an extended epilogue to the OT. I'd rather forget _Dial of Destiny_ even *exists.*
Idk who thought we wanted a deconstruction of Indiana Jones lmao. These are fun action movies with just enough heart and drama to keep the characters compelling. Going full blown character study on Indy was just bizarre. He’s not Logan

Sure there was a lot of corporate backing, but most people didn't even consider that it was going to be bad. Dial of Destiney on the other hand is simultaneously a soulless corporate product, while also being a terrible idea that was doomed from the start.
James Mangold is a very talented director and with Logan he seemed ideal for a story about an aged Indy. The trouble is I think the corporate expectations and demands for what an Indiana Jones film should be drowns the story out and it feels like a rehash of past adventures
ok before i watch.. remember the mission in lego indiana jones with the bar catching fire, you have to blow out the fire by blowing into the speaker/microphone on the DS and i was stuck there for weeks and it pissed me off
I never had that version or a DS but that reminds me of one of my friends who told me he played the game before watching the movies as a kid and got stuck at the part in the Holy Grail level at the end of Crusade because he didn't know which cup was the right one lmao

Crystal skull is easily better because the side characters are less annoying. Dial of destiny has cool moments and if they got rid of that annoying woman and maybe the child and had it just focused on the nazis vs indy then maybe it would be a bit better. Or even bringing back mutt or other original characters would have been a good move. I liked mads mikkelsens role and the motivations of the bad guys made at least some sense but the duo indy is with has like no reason to do anything. And i also thought that they just randomly happened to go back to 212bc because whole thing was explained terribly.
Something I noticed while rewatching is that the nazis plan isn't even explained until they get the completed dial. It's easy enough to infer but they don't outright say it until the end of the movie.

Crystal Skull still had Indy doing a ton of action. Harrison was 65 but looked fucking great, and could probably still kick my ass. I could believe that Indy was doing that stuff in that movie. They let him do stunts, swing from the whip, even have multiple brutal fist fights with the Russian Colonel. That movie still had all the tropes we love about an Indy movie. Stunts, practical effects, whip action, fist fights, brutal villain deaths, and ADVENTURE. Dial of Destiny is so bland, it barely feels like an Indiana Jones movie. After the opening sequence, Indy barely does anything exciting in the entire film. He’s just kinda there. The action set pieces are by the numbers and forgettable, the villains aren’t threatening at all, and it just didn’t feel fun.
Finally something original in the TH-cam Indy Content world. @26:52 “Maybe just recast him”…”Nobody else is playing Indiana Jones” - Sean Patrick Flanery got robbed by not getting to play younger Indy in Dial of Disappointment. Dude is more Jones than Ford. On top of that, he’s currently like a 5th degree black belt in jiu jitsu. Better yet, Disney could’ve made Indy 5 based on the Indiana Jones Chronicles but Harrison really needed a $50 million pay day for another jet.

So, like, imagine if the Archimedes Dial or whatever actually took them back in time to where they wanted to go. Does Indiana Jones now have to save der führer or, like, what? Does he let them do their evil plan? Does fate intervene and he’s absolved of any actual moral decision making? The latter is what actually happens in the movie, tho, right? The bad guys get the calculation wrong and they end up in like Ancient Greece or something. But just imagine. If Dial of Destiny had done the “would you kill baby Shit*er?” dilemma. Would’ve been a glorious mess.
The 3rd act feels like a giant reshoot. I bet they were supposed to originally go back to where they wanted to go, and old Indy would have seen his younger self or something but the ending tested badly. So they cobbled together this CGI mess where all the characters just sit on planes the whole time lmao

I love the first 3 films and will cherish them till the end of time. I like 4, the first half is a decent Indy film, the second half is not very good at all. 5 is a solid disappointment, I was mildly curious maybe James Mangold who did Logan could make a decent last adventure with Indy but they inserted a poorly written unlikeable side kick in Helena who just drags the film down, not cause of her gender and me not liking strong women in film, I actually love them a lot, but in this case because of her writing she was bad, she just belittles Indy and when she turns around in her arc it’s not earned at all. and the plot was just find item, action scene move on. Rinse repeat. Fun but forgettable. At least out of the 2 the 4th was made by Steve speilberg and you can tell his flare is missing in 5. And the overall nostalgia for being introduced to Indiana jones back in 2008 when I was as well 7 was amazing the toys and lego game was so good, so I will take Indiana jones 4 over 5, and at least 4 gave him a family and a good life at the end, Indiana jones 5 was just sad and depressing Indy unlike 4 where he was still happy Indy

Dial of Destiny made Crystal Skull look like an academy award winner for best picture. I watched Dial of Destiny once. I will not see it again. We just watch the first four films again and we just did not even considered Dial of Destiny.
It was colossal wasted opportunity to not do another Indiana jones movie or two in the 90s. I understand Spielberg moved onto more serious movies, but Harrison ford was still in his prime and Lucas wasn’t consumed yet by poorly aged CGI animals like the prequels. You could have set the movie(s) during WWII, to explain Indy’s age, and explored other parts of the war like, what sort of artifacts were imperial Japan looking for in the pacific theater? Or maybe a movie set during or after the manhattan project, with the soviets looking across the world for lost ancient technology in a race to compete with Americans and the atomic age. Again, I’m just making stuff up, but so many story opportunity that they did nothing with before the main actor was too old for the part. Instead-we got Young Indiana Jones TV show, a half forgotten show that was cancelled after only two seasons. In an alternate universe these movies exist instead of the 4 and 5 we actually got, but we’ll have to settle for the original trilogy instead. (Fate of Atlantis is still an amazing expanded universe game)
That I wholeheartedly disagree with. Harrison made the role iconic. Nobody would be able to come in and try to do what he did, the same way the young Han Solo movie just didn’t work. He worked perfectly fine in Crystal Skull, because they didn’t really point out his age and still allowed him to convincingly do action and fight scenes. Actively drawing attention to him being old, and giving him next to nothing to do in Dial is where things completely fall apart
