    Good one Sam. I had issue with DMTL on my 07 BMW Z4 rebuild. Using BMW manuals I found that the wire was getting signal at the computer but not at the DMTL heater (which was throwing check engine light). Turned out that someone before me was going rear bumper body work. They CUT the whole harness and then just solder it with matching colors. Turned out there were 3 black cables with red lines. Each of them for something different. So do not always count on colors. Get yourself good multi-meter and some extension wires, so that you can measure if one end of the cable (under the hood on the left in my case) is the same at the other end (right rear wheel wheel in my case). That helps a lot.

    I worked as a stereo and speaker installer for two years, so as soon as you said red wire I knew you had the wrong one. Red/Yellow wires 99% of the time indicate direct 12v connections.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yup, as I satted above: red is 99.9% constant power...straight black is 99.9% ground......I knew it too soon as he showed "red wire"
      In the words of the cable guy: well, THERE'S your problem lol

    • @nrvsauto8990
      @nrvsauto8990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really true as each manufacturer uses different colours for powers and grounds,

    • @IntelligentDesignReptiles
      @IntelligentDesignReptiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Red and yellow are almost exclusively used to indicate direct lines to the battery, the alternate colors/striped wires are connected to fused connections or relays. So things such as speaker wires or connections to different lights will be different colors in different cars, but red and yellow are reserved for power.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not really, now I haven't done it lately, but for the past 40 years pure red and pure black have been exclusively constant power and ground. Mercedes, Ford GM Chrysler Mazda Honda Toyota etc etc etc. Now this isn't to say that they don't use OTHER colours, but if you see a red wire, you are pretty much guaranteed it's constant power. This applies to just about every other area where there is electricity.

    • @andrewschulzsd
      @andrewschulzsd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeez I reinstalled some smoke detectors once and I even know that red is constant and black is ground

  • @bugalaman

    A multimeter could have saved you the cost of the clockspring. You could have checked the continuity of the clockspring circuit. Pressing the horn would have closed the circuit. Referring to the manual saved you since you know you were likely using the wrong wire. Troubleshooting electronics is a bit tricky, but having a multimeter on hand is essential.

    I had a 2005 Grand Marquis that I recently parted with. I ended up wrecking on wet roads, decided ultimately not to fix it but when I wrecked it blew apart the turn signal bulb and bucket.
    I put a new bulb in and tested it out only to find out my parking lights and taillights didn't work.
    I checked the fuses in the dark and couldn't find a blown fuse. I basically said "hell with it, I just won't drive at night".
    So I drove with no taillights for four months...
    Turned out it was blown fuse... The whole time... I just never checked the right one apparently

    Reminds me of the time I replaced the factory radio - which had failed - in my parent's 1975 Buick Century with a newer GM radio I got from a neighbor who had replaced it with an aftermarket stereo. Installed trailer connectors to replace the factory ones, then took a voltmeter to the two wires (yellow and gray) coming from behind the dashboard. Got 13.5 volts, so I put the connector on, installed the radio and buttoned everything up. A couple of nights later, I turned on the headlights and noticed the dash lights immediately blew out - was the fuse. Replaced the fuse, and the same thing happened. Diagnosing the issue, I discovered that the gray wire my voltmeter told me was ground was actually the positive lead for the light inside the radio, which was driven off the circuit for the dash lights. The proper ground for the radio was actually through the chassis. Redid the wiring, and both the radio and the dash lights worked fine afterward.

    Another test you could have done is just measure the voltage coming from those black and red wires you initially hooked up and test to see if it was constant voltage (most of the time black and red wires mean positive voltage on that circuit). This would have also led you to check the wiring diagram after haha but your not an electrician so can’t blame ya. Good job love your videos very informative.

    When you found the green wire, a cheap volt meter could also be used to validate it was the correct wire before all the soldering work too. Put a meter on it and hit the horn and see if the voltage changes with each horn press.

    You can test clock springs. Also just test that red wire to see if it was getting power with just the key. That would tell you something because the horn shouldn’t be getting a constant unless the relay is built into it. Also, I type my exact model and such into google images for wiring diagrams, and just scroll through pictures until I know I have the correct diagram, it’s a bit cheaper

    Anyone else notice the green wire sticking out of the loom in his hand at 8:34? Get yourself a Fluke multimeter and an airbag safe test light. I have worked on custom automotive electronics since the mid 90's. You gotta have both to diagnose anything electrical. Especially in an accident damaged vehicle. Wires get damaged with all of that metal being crushed together.

    Rule #1: RTFM.
    You should *always* get a shop manual before taking a wrench to any car. This is especially true if you aren't familiar with the car. I am very glad I got one before doing a brake job on my old Saab years ago because the front discs were some needlessly wacky over-engineered contraption that was unlike anything I had seen before or since. Without the $12 Chilton's I would have been screwed (this was in the very early days of the Internet before everything and its mother was available online and a fast connection was 9600 bps).
