I'm always happy to see someone solve a problem like this in a short period of time and without undergoing an expensive solution. There's no telling what a dealership service would have cost for this fix. Congratulations!
Listen I'm the guy that hates to turn a wrench but I love watching your videos. I guess because to me it helps me build a little knowledge of car repair. I hate feeling at the mercy of someone because I don't understand something. You have a very plain and simple way of explaining things which is rare. Thanks!!
Very rewarding to see you get the Corvette started and to see no Check engine light. You are a unique mechanic in that you are very resourceful and you are an expert at research and saving money. No surprise that you have so many views.
You have the unique ability to get a watcher invested in your success. I actually smiled when the car started. The other dilettantes with their Ferrari's, Rolls and other unobtainium cars do nothing for me except remind me of the absurdity of our tax code. Subscribed and liked.
You should get a vacuum radiator refill tool, it uses compressed air and a venturi to pull a vacuum on the cooling system. Then you let it sit for several minutes to make sure there are no leaks. Then it uses a siphon hose and the vacuum in the cars cooling system to fill the cooling system. It works great, is fast and I haven't had any trouble with air being trapped in the system like if it was filled just using a funnel.
Their is a plastic shroud that is missing under your intake duct. It sits on top of the radiator and condenser and helps guide the air threw the radiator and condenser. You really need to have them installed you could possibly run into slight overheating issues with that missing. Just a heads up. Love your videos keep up the good work!
Tyicus well as I stated in my comment it can lead to “SLIGHT OVERHEATING ISSUES” not saying that they are absolutely necessary but based my four years of experience working at a Chevrolet dealership as a fully certified GM technician I’ve worked on these cars and when these shrouds have been removed or lost I’ve noticed a loss in cooling performance to the a/c condenser as well as radiator. I have verified this with Live data using my scan tool. And while it is not huge it’s still a loss in performance.
Except he was told by someone online what the issue was. And he needed turbo Mike to do the spannering. That's not what I'd call a guy who works out the problem himself
I love to see people getting things done. You are definitely doing that, Sam! Looking forward to seeing how much you spend total to get the GS back on the road and what it takes to get it done. Great stuff!
Really enjoying your rebuild videos Sam! I actually bought my first Copart car (2004 Pontiac Grand Prix) repaired it and had it pass Ohio State inspection based off of watching your work. Keep doing it man!
That's pretty cool! Basically the ECU needed to be calibrated to understand the raw data coming from the clutch position sensor (Probably a variable resistor as it outputs voltages). Similar to how when you download a new racing game or simulator on your PC and you have to calibrate your Logitech/Thrustmaster/whatever USB wheel and pedals. What's annoying is how far car manufacturers go to make it as difficult as possible for users to force you to pay ridiculous dealer service fees.
You should flush it out with distilled water before you put the coolant in it! Tap or well water has a lot of minerals that will cause oxidation in aluminum and rusting in steel. It will cause a build-up throughout the engine if it's not flushed out. Even if you try to drain it out there will still be tap water in the block and heater core and radiator. Which will cause problems over time. Distilled water is cheap and way better then the headache tap water will cause in a few years.
Think tap water is bad? Put some distilled water in. It's a great solvent. You want those minerals in, or it'll take it out of the engine. In the 1980s some people thought drinking distilled water was great. Great for leaching out calcium and other vital elements in the body. They ended up with permanent problems. Unless you have terrible water, use tap water. I've used tap water for over 40 years. No problems as long as I mix it to spec. Planning a trip to the arctic? My Dad's famous words. Coolant was good to like -45F.
Outstanding job Sam! I love your determination and never give up attitude. I was crossing my fingers for you the whole video... LOL. So happy to see you got it running and it sounds great... no issues with that motor, which was a concern at first with the missing oil....
Awesome! Nice to see you got it going. That first start is always a moment of trepidation, followed by the sweet taste of victory an knowing you just saved a lot of money on a nice car.
Great video, congrats on getting it running!! One thing - don't use hose water in the coolant system, even temporarily. Next time, hit the grocery store for a few gallons of distilled water. Your water pump will thank you!
Hey, I'm new subscriber and have one comment to make. If you anticipate a vehicle;s progress taking more than one video to cover, PLEASE add in a video number such "C6 - #2" or whatever, to your titles. I just started watching and unfortunately watched the last video about your C6 and had a very difficult time finding all of the previous videos that got us that point. You do a great job, but please make it easier for people to both find and watch the videos in the proper order. Thanks.
Great video! Now that all the cars are controlled entirely by computers it really does get annoying trying to figure out why the car won't start. A few months back I had a Chevy cavalier that wouldn't start. I changed the fuel pump and battery, cleaned the fuel injectors, drained and put in new gas but it still wouldn't start! Then I finally figured out that the cars security system just needed to be reset after which it fired right up!
Recently I leased a new VM Jetta... after going through all the hassles of a dealership I received a threatening letter from the dealer that sounded a lot like they wanted the car back. I was so pissed that I was hoping the letter was true/real. I was prepared to just grab some savings and buy a used car and drive it into the ground. Watching this channel reinforces my decision... so next time I'll invest in tools and a work space.
Any computer running Windows XP is 32 bit unless it says "64 Bit Edition" when starting up (which is rare and uncommon). You can find old XP laptops on sites like eBay for cheap since they aren't used much for everyday use anymore, but they work perfect for these situations
Gave a like and subscribed! Im stoked for you man... such a beautiful thing to work on a car yourself and get it running without having to take it to the dealship. I have friends ask me all the time "why don't you just take your Jeep somewhere and have them fix it?" Well for one I'm not made of money, are the parts and tools I purchase expensive to fix my Jeep? Sometimes yes, most the time no... I bought my 03 jeep liberty and it came with 1 key... no key fob so I had to manually unlock my doors and there's only one key hole (on the driver side) Dodge wanted $270 bucks to program and give me a single key fob. I went to Amazon and found a tool that plus to the inside of my Jeep under the dash, smashes the buttons as instructed and boom. Now I can lock/unlock/open my glass back top (the back door has a big tire on it and my back opens glass first then the door), and I have a panic button. The other great thing is I've programmed multiple peoples Jeep Wrangled, Cherokee , and Liberty's charging only $20 (they must provide the key fob which is like $9 bucks on Amazon, has to be a certain type of key fob which I give the numbers for each vehicle) not only has the part paid for its self... but its helped people like me who want to open the passenger door for a date but can't because there's no door lock on the passenger side. Seeing you put this beauitful car together and getting it running has been a joy!!! It reminds me why I like working on my own vehicles rather than depending on some shop who may either screw me over or charge me out the rear for labor. Your video is inspiring as a Corvette is a sports car among all sports cars. Plus it sounds amazing, looks amazing, and the fact you did it yourself... again just amazing. I dunno if your some ASE certified mechanic but if not then even bigger congratulations are in store as it was amazing just watching you bring this beast back to life.
Thanks Samcrac for this awesome video. I also learned from you about that scanner you bought on Amazon. I never knew that existed. After your video I promptly ordered one for myself. Thank goodness you showed this tool because I was going to eventually plop down big bucks to buy a Tech2. Thanks for saving me big $$$$. 👍👍👍👍
I have considered getting one of these scanners, but I wasn't sure if they actually lived up to the promise or if they were no better than an OBD2. It is good to see that they really can work.
Mike Podruchny Since my comment I purchased and used this device. It is exactly like owning a GM Tech2. You can even use it to download programs to install a PCM/ECM or any other module in a late model GM vehicle. Go to acdelcotds.com and you pay for a day or more to download software needed for your module. This website is the same website used by GM mechanics but is for small shops or individuals. This site also has the same service info as used by GM mechanics. Definitely recommend this scanner interface.
Dj Ray any idea about IDS software for the Ford side? I have an explorer that doesn't want to remote start and we don't even have a dealer in town any more.
Mike Podruchny Not sure on the Ford side unfortunately. I am a Chevy technician and Mazda. I know Mazda shares some of Fords IDS but through even Mazda’s IDS I can’t access Ford vehicles. This particular scanner interface that I bought and also Samcrac bought is for GM vehicles only. I don’t know if this company makes one Ford as well. Sorry that I can’t help you out with your Food situation. Hopefully someone reads this thread and can help you out.
I dealt with the same thing on my Volkswagen b5 Passat. I purchased a ECU off eBay that was reflashed for 93 octane and 11 pounds more boost. I popped it in and it started but the would not idle right and will not rev above 2000 RPMs. You need some special dealer software to adapt throttle body called vag-com I'm sure you've heard of it if you mess with Audis. Luckily I found a guy on a forum that lived locally that and previously purchased the software for his laptop and interface cable. I went to his house installed the new ECU and his driveway in like 2 minutes then use this laptop to adapt the throttle body and it ran perfect. Took me a total of about 15 minutes and it went from having the acceleration of an old Ford Taurus to spinning the tires at 45 miles an hour in 2nd gear. It was a great day.
A buddy of mine had the crank position sensor on hgis crown vic break off. The thing ran and sounded like it was cammed but worked good enough for a week until he could get the part. The amazing thing was the amount of power it had in that time since it ran rich. Apparently if your crank position sensor fails, you can do really long burnouts lol!
Congrats it sounds pretty healthy too ! It’s always best when you do it yourself Ive tried to use so called p rofessional shops and even the dealerships todo. Repairs and service. And i found out i was more thorough and knowledgeable of my vehicles system then they were ? It pissed me off when i realized i was capable of doing a better job and didn’t take the shortcuts the other guys did One example was i paid for 3 or 4. Tuneups on a truck Then i decided to do it myself i found the hardest spark plug to access had never been replaced as it was the original factory installed plug and did not match the other ones sure it was running but. I paid for all of them to be replaced several times I thought why? Then i remembered my father telling me do it yourself and you know its done right he was also a big advocate of purchasing the correct information and tools that yo need as well
I to grew up with being told that. My uncle and I built Harley’s. He used to say, “Chrome don’t get u home!” Just cause it looks flashy doesn’t mean it serves the purpose. Maybe that’s why I like the murdered out look. Lol.
You can install a 32bit operating System directly on a 64bit maschine. (you can even install ms-dos directly on a 64bit maschine because they are all backward compatible.)
*Wow congrats on getting it started that was pretty slick coming up with that much more affordable alternative too since my corral is an all GM one i am thinking seriously about purchasing one of those things myself. great video and again congrats on your success! any idea what you'll be wanting for the car once you're done putting it back together again? just kinds of curious what you think it might sell for* BY THE WAY WHERE'S THE LINK TO THE TOOL?
Sam you're going to end up with brown sludge by using tap water in your cooling system with Dex-cool, it's finicky stuff. You have to use distilled water only. Great you got the car running.
Steve Yulenburg He should be able to rinse and drain with distilled water to take care of that. A big part of cleaning like this is to dilute the stuff to the point where the contaminants are undetectable.
the brown sludge is the dexcool and dex is 50% water in premixed ...that stuff is horrific , I refuse to use it in any gm cars unless the customer absolutely needs me to.
K Brx we’ve used that on all our GM cars and never have gotten the brown sluge. If the Dex is mixed with the wrong kind of coolant, and even stop leak and sealers can do that.
I got a 2004 Tahoe with dex cool coolant @ 250K miles only used distilled water with it, same with my 2004 Saab 9-3. Distilled water is key when mixing with dex cool.
Mercedes is notorious for dealership only crap. In fact we have a euro specialized shop where I am from who sent me packing to the dealership for an sbc replacement on my old E500
Do your self a favor use regular green coolant dexcool causes coolant passage blockage if it gets air in the system ands corrode causing gasket failures
I'm sure this is a silly question but did you try disconnecting the battery before going to the diagnostic stuff? I don't know much about cars but I know this worked when I had some issues with my vehicle. The vehicle was flipping out on me, sometimes not starting... some times refusing to turn off once it did start. Lights flashing on and off sometimes and relays or something clicking as well. You name it. This went on for several days and kept getting worse and worse. Finally I disconnected the battery for a minute and then reconnected it. Kind of like a reboot on a computer. It has worked fine ever since.
I use an old green Acer Aspire One for technical work on my cars. It has a ScanXL pro and HPTuners on it, which pretty much gets everything done for me.
That crank sensor thing can happen when you replace the flywheel too. On ford stuff it’s called a Neutral Profile Relearn. At least with my car you can use an aftermarket tuner to do crank relearn.
Congrats on getting your Corvette started. It looks like your perseverance paid off. You probably saved over $500 from not taking it to the dealership.
Samcrac I saw your older videos and the other cars you have sold I thought u would've sold the vette but I thought wrong but anyways awesome video you're amazing at explaining things
Samcrac And also one more thing are you gonna work on the Mazda Miata and idk if I'm wrong but that miata looks the same as the one that Jeremy Clarkson drove when they were at Iraq.
Thx for the video ,I had to do the exact same thing to my C6 except for the water in the radiator, But yes what a Great feeling to hear that thing run for the first time . Congrats !
William Garrett due to the low profile of a vet, there is barely enough room for a body. A creeper would make it virtually impossible to get under the car and work on it while on jackstands.. jacking the car higher would tweak the frame, I personally use a moving pad when working under mine..and yes I have a creeper..
Modern Cars seem so complicated with sensors for everything. It’s only going to get more sophisticated but the good thing is that just makes them more safer. When it comes to it they aren’t too hard to work on but You need the right tools and the now how
Awesome info about the vx-diag! I bought a Chinese Tech2 years ago and it reprogrammed several modules before the power plug on unit broke. I am definitely going to get one of these to go with my Ford and Mazda version.
The 32-bit computer thing u got wrong. It is software related in terms of, you can install an 32-bit OS on 64-bit hardware but not the other way around. To be able to use 64-bit u do need the parts supporting it. But you dont need an old computer just to be able to use 32. OK?
I hope you Flushed all that water out with coolant, you're not supposed to use tap water, only distilled water, the minerals in the tap water can wear things out faster, even if you just drain it, there will still be some minerals stuck inside, with that out of the way, I love your videos, hope to see more playful cows in them, keep them coming! :D
DO NOT USE DEX-COOL!!! I have a 1993 c4 corvette and I had to replace the engine coolent and the owners manual said to use Dex-Cool but what it does is leave a brown sludge like mud in your hoses and you have to get the whole engine cleaned out or even get a new engine. Just warning ya!
Same issue, I had to change out the cam position sensor. Also, changed out the negative ground cable which was shredding. Now it starts first time, all the time.
I purchased a corvette . it was missing ALOT of parts from a tornado as the front of the engine was in the process of being worked on. I now have it back together and it's running so good. So don't give up! It's worth the wait.
xsniper1916 I guess now it just knows the exact position of the pedal. I noticed the voltage reading 0V applied, and 3.9V released. I'm just used to the monetary clutch pedal switches on older vehicles.
VIN matching on ecu bcm and speedometers is really annoying to backyard mechanics. I know it helps with parts theft but I don't want to pay to have parts reprogrammed just to fix my car with junkyard parts.
It's totally out of hand need re program to Change brake pads or ruin 1000$ caliper .used to fix vcrs change head need 500$ programmer for each brand of 100$ vcr .now they want to put your money in there.so someone can borrow it during the night..😎
Agreed , i have a bunch of flashers from china to not only program my own key' but ecu's body module's and just about thing i need , they cost very little money . The tech 2 scan tool has been hacked for many years now google tech2win
Even one gram of minerals in water makes no difference. Besides, any minerals or contaminates are suspended in the antifreeze, and again the volume is insignificant. There are more minerals, ions and residual crap coming off the metal parts, gasket goop, seals, etc. Using distilled water is just an 'old wives tale'. Check your hot water tank, it takes three years and thousands of gallons of raw water to create significant mineral buildup.
He said he was just checking for leaks and if none were found he was going to flush it and replace with proper coolant. I see nothing wrong with what he did.
yea but some things still dont work in the compatibility mode, same for the win XP compatibility mode in Win 7 etc. , works on many things but not on all ;)
Some older Software for Cars need XP and a 32 Bit CPU to run properly. You have a more direct hardware access on XP to the USB/Com Ports then under Windows 7 or 10. So it is not bad to have a older Netbook or Laptop to run the software without issues .
I just bought the Wi-Fi version of the VCX Nano and used it with my 2 year old HP laptop running Windows 10 64 Bit; and Tech2Win ran flawlessly! Now I can figure out why my TPMS light is going nuts after about 30 minutes of driving.
I'm always happy to see someone solve a problem like this in a short period of time and without undergoing an expensive solution. There's no telling what a dealership service would have cost for this fix. Congratulations!

Nothing like hearing an engine fire up for the first time. All that work just paid off. Congrats!

Thats been tested to help only when the car reaches a certain speed, otherwise the fans do most of the work. they arent as needed as you think.
hate to be the grammar nazi... but its "(through) the radiator"

The hair on your screen no worries haha. I never get through or yours right.
You must not hate it too much or you wouldn't do it.
Hate to be a spelling Nazi, but he made a spelling error, not a grammar error.
Your a go getter baby. You figure shit out on your own. I love that. Excellent job
Except he was told by someone online what the issue was. And he needed turbo Mike to do the spannering. That's not what I'd call a guy who works out the problem himself

Well presented Sam.
I guess everyone who starts to work with cars in any way end up fixing more and buying more 😃
Good video as usual, much respect

you should call your fans crac heads
Crackheads?
r7blue I vote no lol.
YES I watch every video he releases so I consider myself a Crac head
Yes! I'm a crac head for sure!
My head doesn't need to be anywhere near Sams crac!
You're so happy it started, that's great! I know the feeling you get when something you do works just like it should. Keep up the great work!

Hey Sam
I really enjoy your videos.
Your debugging procedures are methodical and logical.
Take care, speed safely.

Yeah, I got a question. Is it possible to give the corvette a domino's DXP paint job?
YES.
Great job, wasn't sure if we would ever head the vette engine run. "Love it when a plan comes together"
That is awesome that you get the Corvette started.

(you can even install ms-dos directly on a 64bit maschine because they are all backward compatible.)
why is this so low
Exactly what I was thinking when he said it!
This video made my day and me happy! I'm sure I was as excited as you were to hear it fire up.
This is the first video I have seen from you. Great job getting her run! I'm all about that DIY, subscribed!
Congratulations Sam!
Congrats Samcrac . I was so excited to watch the corvette running again. Horaaaaa for Captain Sam
223,000 miles on a 2003 5.3L Chevy Express, regular changes..no sludge issues.
You are the most talented mechanic I’ve ever seen. Amazing Bro.....
Fix a Ferrari, Land Rover, and a Chevy spark in the same day.... epic Pal.....
Mercedes is notorious for dealership only crap. In fact we have a euro specialized shop where I am from who sent me packing to the dealership for an sbc replacement on my old E500
No matter what kind of car it is the first start up after working on it is a great feeling.
Do your self a favor use regular green coolant dexcool causes coolant passage blockage if it gets air in the system ands corrode causing gasket failures
I have seen this problem first hand.
Congrats Sam! A victory for the garage mechanic!
Is Samcrac married/ what is his job, he should make a video telling his life story
There's nothing like diagnosing our cars ourselves. Great job
Love every second of this video. Thank you for existing samcrac!
11:02 I'm pretty sure oil free floor and clean floor are two different concepts...
Good job. Thank you for showing people they can still fix their own car!
Last time I was this early, the videos weren't getting demonetized
I have the exact netbook & still use it for older programs, you are right, the 32 bit does the trick:)
I owe it to you guys to upload more often! Too late for a New New Year's resolution???
Samcrac your videos are really good. A+ and keep up the good work.
Haha wanted to hear you rev it though!!
never too late
Can you give us a shoutout in your next video please!
Sam you have one more new years day coming up February 16th the Chinese New year, so get your fried rice , lo mein and dumpling on asap!!!
I use an old green Acer Aspire One for technical work on my cars. It has a ScanXL pro and HPTuners on it, which pretty much gets everything done for me.
You can install a 32 Bit Windows on 64 bit CPU PCs ;)
That crank sensor thing can happen when you replace the flywheel too. On ford stuff it’s called a Neutral Profile Relearn. At least with my car you can use an aftermarket tuner to do crank relearn.
That is not a car with a computer. That is a computer with a car.
Fastest computer in the west
Congrats on getting your Corvette started. It looks like your perseverance paid off. You probably saved over $500 from not taking it to the dealership.
All that hard work u put in that vette I think u should keep it instead of selling it
I plan to keep it when did I say I was selling it?
Samcrac I saw your older videos and the other cars you have sold I thought u would've sold the vette but I thought wrong but anyways awesome video you're amazing at explaining things
Samcrac And also one more thing are you gonna work on the Mazda Miata and idk if I'm wrong but that miata looks the same as the one that Jeremy Clarkson drove when they were at Iraq.
Thx for the video ,I had to do the exact same thing to my C6 except for the water in the radiator, But yes what a Great feeling to hear that thing run for the first time . Congrats !
Cardboard on concrete! Best creeper ever!
William Garrett due to the low profile of a vet, there is barely enough room for a body. A creeper would make it virtually impossible to get under the car and work on it while on jackstands.. jacking the car higher would tweak the frame, I personally use a moving pad when working under mine..and yes I have a creeper..
I was thinking that Sam should reach out to Dominoes and see if they might be able to sponsor him with some cardboard pizza boxes - haha.
William Garrett I know right...!
Modern Cars seem so complicated with sensors for everything. It’s only going to get more sophisticated but the good thing is that just makes them more safer. When it comes to it they aren’t too hard to work on but You need the right tools and the now how
Damn you are good love your videos , Everyone watching should tell all their friends .
OK?
Do not put dex-cool in that vette I had it in my chevy and it rotted out the freeze plug I recommend putting green peak antifreeze in
I hope you Flushed all that water out with coolant, you're not supposed to use tap water, only distilled water, the minerals in the tap water can wear things out faster, even if you just drain it, there will still be some minerals stuck inside, with that out of the way, I love your videos, hope to see more playful cows in them, keep them coming!
Reese Norley the sludge forms bc auto shops always top off coolant with green coolant and when you mix dex cool with green coolant it forms the sludge
I remember some problems with Land Rovers and Dexcool ....
Same issue, I had to change out the cam position sensor. Also, changed out the negative ground cable which was shredding. Now it starts first time, all the time.
VERY COOL.....I YELLED "YEA" WHEN IT STARTED!!!!!!.
Awesome! Love to see normal guys like myself overcome the dealer trickery!
your missing the shroud that goes on top of the radiator that's what the sensor hooks to
Such a good feeling when you figure things out AND THEY WORK !
Yessss finaly!! So now what? A lambo?
Congratulations, Good job of useing alternative ways to get around Dealer only work.
I purchased a corvette . it was missing ALOT of parts from a tornado as the front of the engine was in the process of being worked on.
I now have it back together and it's running so good. So don't give up! It's worth the wait.
I literally shouted out YES!! 😂😂
That's a nice corvette can't wait until its finished fully
Wow, clutch pedals sure have came along way. I can't believe it needs to learn it. Is it clutch by wire, with no hydraulics?
Its probably a normal clutch but the car needs to know where it is so if you try to start it with the clutch in the car knows not to turn over
xsniper1916 I guess now it just knows the exact position of the pedal. I noticed the voltage reading 0V applied, and 3.9V released. I'm just used to the monetary clutch pedal switches on older vehicles.
Wow that had to be the most satisfying feeling ever to run that program and start your car
Ok now it runs what’s up with a celebratory burnout?
Great job! Glad it started! I'm just wondering why it had the problem in the first place. Maybe I missed something?
2:08 sounds like 5 different moods saying "Throw in this sway bar"
Aaron Maples definitely a voice over
That's an awesome bit of kit, wish there was something like that for my Jeep.
Nice work, I love when stealerships lose out on work :-)
It's great seeing the Vette run! Congratulations!!
You the man SAM
Congratulations.. am so happy for you. I have been looking for a crashed 2015 mustang to rebuild
The parts theft thing is BS. They just want return business.
Agreed , i have a bunch of flashers from china to not only program my own key' but ecu's body module's and just about thing i need , they cost very little money . The tech 2 scan tool has been hacked for many years now google tech2win
Work at a Chevrolet dealership I had no idea you could get a tech 2 replica for that cheap, impressive
Do not use tap water in your radiator people... distilled and coolant only.
Why ?
ya472 minerals in the tap water could build up and cause some blockage.
Distilled water? Drain refrigerator thaw out hey presto it's pure water.
Great the Corvette started even with a few glitches. However, how did the DXP do at inspection?
about the 32Bit computer... you can install a 32Bit Operationsystem on a newer one aswell btw :) (there are 32Bit versions of Windows 10 aswell)
You can run compatibility mode under 32bit no need to re-install . Every 64bit always have 32 version of the os.
yea but some things still dont work in the compatibility mode, same for the win XP compatibility mode in Win 7 etc. , works on many things but not on all ;)
Some older Software for Cars need XP and a 32 Bit CPU to run properly.
We have an old macbook with windows XP for this purposes...
