      I have found that what helps with meltdowns is quiet, privacy and love. If the situations is too much, removing them from the situation and reconnecting is best. Nursing is great if you can. Whatever makes them feel calm and safe.

      @@myishakane6927 I couldn't agree more. The big emotions from a meltdown are not triggered by a desire to achieve a goal but as a reaction to an overwhelming feeling or stimulus. Love, comfort and safety are paramount when managing a meltdown.

    Can you step away if they are in a safe room?

      Hi @forster93, no you should not leave them even if they're in a safe room. Your child can still hold their breath, pass out, hit their head, panic or do something else to hurt themselves.
      You must stay in the room with your child. Sit down on the floor next to them, read a magazine or a book, don’t make eye contact, be very still, don’t talk, don’t engage.
      Wait for the storm to pass. Try not to react. Let the energy diffuse from the situation.
