  • How to change the front and rear differential fluid on a 2015+ Canyon Colorado 4x4. As per manual front and rear diff need 75W90 gear oil and i prefer synthetic. No friction modifiers required with Eaton rear locker.
To avoid a massacre from the front diff like i had crack the fill first....

Just a little advice from a mechanic with 60 yrs experience.. FOR ACCURATE FILLING THE VEHICLE MUST BE LEVEL OR SITTING AS IT WOULD IF ON THE GROUND. Use a clean drain pan to enable you to see what your oil looks like or what metal particles may be in it. Remove the FILL plug first unless you like petroleum products sprayed in your face. If it doesn't trickle out sitting level stick your finger or something that won't fall all the way in and check the diff oil level. This will give you an idea of what to look for if your oil level is extremely low, meaning that when you pull the magnetic drain / bottom plug look closely for metal on the magnet. Very fine amounts of metal (a thin slimy coating) is normal to see. If Large slivers or pieces are stuck to the magnetic plug SAVE THEM in a clean white rag or paper towel so you can show them to a professional. Whatever you find allow 20 or 30 minutes for the old oil to drain, getting as much of the old oil out as you can. While you are waiting Pop your hood and inspect your engine: check oil, check coolant reservoir, washer fluid, brake fluid, give it a general "look over" rather than watching the differential oil drain. IF no large pieces were found on the magnetic drain plug, wash / clean the magnetic drain plug thoroughly and install. Wipe any spilled oil off the bottom of the differential and plug. Add the manufacturer's recommended differential oil. Call your local dealer and ask the service manager what they recommend for your vehicle. With your drain pan under the oil fill plug add the oil until it starts to "trickle" out. Let it trickle until it stops or close to stopping. Install the fill plug and wipe the oil off the differential and plug. If you have a 4 wheel drive follow the same procedure as above if you have an additional drain pan. Let them both drain while you do your engine checks / inspection. Fill the front diff. the same way.

Thanks for the maintenance vids for the 2nd gen Colorado/Canyons. I have a 2016 Colorado and my water pump just started having a slow drip. Have you changed yours out?

Nope. I talked to my buddy who is a GM Tech before we went on our 11,000km road trip and he said from what he has seen water pumps we’re not a common failure. How many km do you have and what motor?

@@SDSGarage89 Thanks for the reply. I have the LFX with 73,000 miles or about 117482 km. It’s almost 6 years old with the original coolant. Im told the coolant/antifreeze should be changed every 5 years or 150,000 miles.

@@Cire808 that’s too bad. From what I have heard they are pretty solid pumps and not a common failure but could be wrong. I have about 195,000k on my truck with original coolant. It for sure needs changing before winter and states 5 year change intervals like you said. Procedure for a flush and coolant replacement looks pretty easy.

I’m not sure but is the front and rear differential what in the Manuel calls the front and rear axle fluid change? Forgive my ignorance.

100%. I also noticed after this my vent line was kinked. Nothing like a gear oil facial….

If you inject ATF with that large syringe, it hardly goes in.
