You have helped me change my front and rear diff fluid and I will be doing this soon. Just bought a 2017 colorado z71. Thank you for good videos! Right to the point and the important info is emphasized.
Hi, I followed your directions and changed the transfer case, and front and rear differential fluids on his 2016 Chevy Colorado. I used AMSOIL signature ATF in the transfer case and the AMSOIL synthetic gear oil in the differentials. Your videos were excellent! All the services were very easy to perform, other than being a little messy since you have to get under the truck. I did not find it at all necessary to lift it onto stands at all, specially since I’m pretty small anyway. I do have a small torx wrench I use for bikes so I torx to 24 nm. Any lady out there can really perform these services on just about any vehicle and I would highly encourage it. You are guaranteed to know exactly what fluid went in and that it was done right. Thank you again for your excellent videos!
Cocora22, thanks for your comment. I am so glad to hear the video helped you work on your truck. Glad to have a lady subscribed too! Thanks for watching!
This wouldn’t harm the 6 speed transmission on the 15-16 model Colorados right? Just wanting to make sure. Since from 2017-2020 models have that 8 speed trans.
Whenever I change differential and transfer case fluids I will liberally spray carb cleaner into the fill hole, till it runs out just about clear. Then leave both plugs out for a few minutes, so the residue can evaporate, then repeat once with a short spray till it runs out the drain again. Then let evaporate again for a while. Then replace the drain plug and refill with the appropriate fluid, using synthetic fluid. The transfer case and fluid should not be dirty like differential fluid can be, so it more important cleaning out the differentials. If you have a removable cover, I will always plan to remove, clean inside and out and detail the cover, or replace with finned aftermarket type.
Thanks for video. I spilled a good bit on refill of the 2 quarts. Should I be concerned about there being sufficient volume in there? Only had the 2 quarts.
You want to make sure you have enough fluid that it leaks over the fill port just a little bit. So if it didn't leak over the fill port, its probably low and you should add some.
Fondupot's Garage you have to use the new 5w30 Dexos 2. It’s like a European diesel oil basically. And nobody carries it except like Summit racing, and maybe a few others. It’s just hard to find, and it’s pricey. You can order it now on Amazon. I’ve owned several diesels and this one is great engine and performance for what it is. But getting the oil is not easy to get yet.
@@zerofuckkksgiven8027 my local Walmart carries Penzoil Euro L which is dexos 2 certified. It's not at every one of them around me, but I can typically find it at one of them.
The title of this post is from 2015-2022 but , the Z71 from 2020-2022 does not have the drain plug , changing the title will be a great detail on that , the information is great about what oil and the tools and everything, but the 2020-2022 is a little bit more complicated than that, thanks for the video
I know they removed the drain from the differentials. But I was not aware they removed it from the transfer case as well. First I’m hearing of it. If that’s the case you can simply siphon the fluid out using an extractor pump. Then refill as shown.
@@jopyjetta Cheers. Good luck! Here is a link to a fluid transfer pump that I have used in the past. I keep a couple of these in the garage for misc. project. They come in handy. amzn.to/4f2MaqB
John Verceles thanks for request. It will be quite some time before I would need to do this. I just had the transmission flushed as part of a service bulletin at my dealer. This transmission also doesn’t have a dipstick and no drain plug. Which makes it difficult to change the fluid without special equipment.
@@fondupot The transmission pan also does not have a drain plug so you'll have to evacuate the fluid from the fill port on the right side of the transmission. You fill the fluid from the fill port until it comes out the check plug on the pan.
So I ran into a problem while trying to purchase the product with the link you gave for the Acdelco ATF. Says it isn't compatible with my 2015 gmc canyon on Amazon.
I would recommend using a fluid that does NOT have the Limited Slip modifier in it. I originally used the mobil1 with the LS modifier, and drained it out after a short period, because it was causing issues. I replaced it with the OEM GM fluid that does not have the LS modifier, and my issues went away. As for the transfer case, you can use the mobil1 ATF Fluid that I used in my transfer case video.
Unfortunately. I think GM removed the drain plugs late 2018. So 2019 models no longer have the drain plug. In order to drain the oil you have to open up the bolts on the differential cover. I believe all models are like this now. Z71 and ZR2 alike.
Hi mate, if I could ask, my colarodo has only 1,500 Kay's on it so brand new, I selected low range the other day to test it ( it's a automatic) and it's very noisy (whiney) but high range 4wd is quite, is this normal?
There’s always going to be more noise when using 4wd from the front driveshaft spinning. But I’m not sure about there being excess noise in 4LO. I havent used that setting on my Canyon yet. Might be worth a trip to the dealer to have them check it out.
@@fondupot looks like I best have them check it out, not real happy with dealer mechanics but I have no choice, when you try low range let me know how it went if you could, thanks for the reply, all the best Andy..

Tom. I think the GM recommendation is around 45,000 miles for “severe conditions”. The manual doesn’t have a normal condition interval. But I’d recommend around 60,000 miles. It should be the same for a 2WD but obviously you don’t have a transfer case. That’s only for 4WD. Glad to help!

According to GM, the transfer case takes Dexron VI. The new Dexron HP can be used in place of all previous Dexon fluids from what I understand.
Yes. I used the Dexron HP ATF. It’s the newer fluid.

Great video. Did you use the mobile 1 that's in your link (Amazon link). For your transmission too?
Find my transmission video. And that has a link to the fluid I used. But I’m pretty sure it’s the same link as this fluid used in this video.
Do the newer trucks…say 2021 and up ask for that new fluid nowadays in the manuals?
It calls for regular Dexron VI ATF. But I’ve been running the newer fluid without issue.
Great videos! I have a 2018 Colorado crew cab 4x4. I have the diesel though. Very hard to find oil for the diesel. It takes a special type

Does the manual specify the Teflon tape on the threads? I've never seen that on an automotive application before.
Not that I know. I’ve always done it. Teflon tape is oil resistant and heat resistant. So it’s fine being used on the diff plugs and t-case plugs.

The fill plug is in the same spot. But there is no longer a drain plug. So when you open the cover the fluid drains out.
They changed the plugs on 2019 canyon. The plugs are hex bits now.
Yes. 5/16” hex.
Hi. Any idea the size and thread of the fill and drain to replace with a magnetic plug?
