    I've never found it that annoying that you still sound like your original character when wearing a cap. It actually makes more sense to me, because therefore you know you're still you and not the real character whose cap you put on.

    • @futal1000
      @futal1000 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      I found it amusing to hear Yoshi sounds as Wario. It's even funnier how they take the animation of the characters they have a cap of, but that's probably due to simplicity.

    • @KingYoshi93
      @KingYoshi93 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @futal1000 They could've made more models and textures so that Yoshi with a cap would turn into Yoshi in a plumber costume and Mario, Luigi and Wario with caps would basically have their current outfit colours changed.

    • @EWOODJ
      @EWOODJ 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      It’s fine the way it is. You’re supposed to *become* the character when putting on the cap. Not just have their outfit.

    When I was a kid and bought my first DS, I recall it coming with the Metroid Prime Hunters : First Hunt demo thingy, but there was a deal where a game and the DS were lightly cheaper. So I got 64 DS, having no idea at all what an N64 was, or why it was even called 64 DS to begin with. I actually got so used to 64 DS's controls and using the thumb grip thing they gave away with the DS, that nowadays, I can still 100% DS and perfectly use the screen commands... and have issues playing the original cuz of my own muscle memory lol. I have no clue whether it is because I first tried to play 64 on the Switch with the Pro Controller instead of an N64 one, but I swear, 64 DS was my only true DS game until Pokemon Ranger and Pearl, so I dedicated my skills to it.

    Always down for more yapping about either version. Love them both! Luigi was a great feature to the game. Not only could he jump super high and far, but could also swim the fastest. Making the dreaded water levels way less of a chore. Or you could play as Wario and make it a dangerous slog.

    While 64 DS certainly has higher poly models, I think the main issue comes down to screen resolution. 64 DS was made to be played on a tiny little hand held screen, so it just kinda looks blurry on any other screen. Meanwhile, I don't think Mario 64 cares how big your screen is, I mean you were going to see all the polys anyway.
    I think Wind Waker looked great when it came out. There were always people picking on it for the cartoony art style, but I can't imagine why anyone would say it was already outdated.
    In general, I think games that go for a distinguished art style just age better than games that go for realism. They look like 'how they're supposed to' rather than 'this was someone's best attempt at the time'. When I first saw footage of WindWaker HD, I was like "what's the difference", I'm sure it'd be more noticeable in a side-by-side comparison, but Wind Waker just didn't feel like a game than needed the HD remake.

    Looking forward to the series. Regarding Luigi, I think being a game breaker is overstated since he is unlocked, sort of halfway through the game and the extent of his ablities wont be apparent to a new player. I only found out a lot of that stuff after finishing the game and seeing which cool stuff Luigi could break

  • @Gamebuilder2000

    honestly i don't really notice 64 DS being that visually outdated, lower poly yeah but textures and colors do a lot of heavy lifting, especially colors and 64 DS's colors are literally perfect, people talk about Bob-omb Battlefield;s grass (usually not realizing Whomp's Fortress and Tiny Huge Island are the same) but that's the normal grass color for a battlefield, plus it clashes less with Yoshi who you have to beat this course with at least once, where you have more options with the other doors
    anyway I agree the controls have never really bothered me, even after playing more free-er 3D Games, and i think Luigi's backflip may be really strong, this is also a game for kids and it was really helpful back when i was one, so i don't think it really makes the game inferior, just adds more options
    i actually beat the chain chomp star as a kid with the power flower for luigi, never even realizing you had to pound it's stake, so even the splitting of the caps between characters adds more options than limiting them like a lot of people claim it does

    • @NintenDeen
      @NintenDeen  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Bob-Omb battlefield is a bit of an outlier. Most of the stages do indeed look the same. But the DS had that grainy PS1 look to it that the PS2 drastically improved on. So if 64DS had like a PS1 to PS2 face lift I think it'd have aged much better.
      But honestly it's all splitting hairs and looking at magnifying glasses lol. And it's extremely subjective. I don't think my opinion is any more valuable on this than anyone else's

    It was a nice idea and blew my mind an n64 game could exist on a handheld. Playing it vs the original, a certain charm is lost, and there being a few new courses, there could have been so much more, a bigger castle with more to explore would have been amazing, but I guess for that B3313 is your fix.

    The N64 graphics and artsyle have always looked better to me. That's actually what put me off playing the DS version. Just seeing that the grass and dirt looked less vibrant and "cartoony" kind of made me say "nah, that's not Mario 64". I've always loved things with a more timeless artstyle. Like, I can easily play a PS1 Worms game without ever thinking it looks bad, because it has its own style and it looks the way it's supposed to look.

    I’m certainly excited to see what all you think about the changes in this version! Although I played this version first, I think I’ve still ended up preferring the original (though I wasn’t alive when either version was released lol). For me, I think the controls and design decisions make all the difference. The controls were mostly workable, but I feel like they’re still altered in a way that just kinda feels off. Even ignoring the analog debate, the characters’ physics themselves are slightly altered (run speed/buildup, jumping floatiness, etc.) in a way that makes the DS version just feel less fluid. I may try the 3DS analog control cheat code someday and reevaluate, but I feel like those issues will remain. As far as design changes go, I honestly found a good number of the added stars kinda meaningless, but inoffensive. What bothers me more is that splitting a power up suite originally designed for one character into 1-2 powers among 4 playable characters added a lot of needless clunkiness to a system that worked fairly well as is. It feels like a stilted attempt to justify the inclusion of the other three characters. If I recall correctly, 64 DS’s development was a bit weird and originally had a completely different vision, and I think that it kinda shows in the final product. But anyway, those are my ramblings about a 20 year old remake of a nearly 30 year old game lol

    The wii u virtual console on the wii u tablet is my go to for mario 64. It might be a bit cheap, but its solely because of the save state. Being able to create a restore point literally anywhere comes in great handy when going for the 100 coin stars in tick tock clock and rainbow ride. Rainbow ride simply because the blue coin block can be brutal. And TTC because it's a pain in the butt to climb the clock and go for the coins without falling off.

    I wonder how the discourse on Mario’s controls has changed specifically because replacement n64 controller joysticks are *not* what we used to have.
    The other day, I plugged in my original controller that I keep for preserving and occasional use, and Mario responds completely different on an original joystick. It’s far more sensitive and easier when making minute movements.

      If you notice in my OG64 vids, and many others you'll find online, when ppl are trying to run straight with Mario it doesn't always work right. They swivel a lot. The N64 having that "oval" analog zone or whatever it's called where it's more sensitive pressing right and left than it is pressing up and down absolutely makes a difference

    I agree with almost all of this! But I grew up with DS mainly. (Hottake) I've noticed the game looking so . . . Super Mario 64 DS is a quirk with a few of the Mario DS games (even the Minigames in SM64DS! Mario Kart DS is also a comparison), it seems to be (atleast in my view) a way to make them all look sleek, the DS' design was sleek and modern in the 2000s way so it fused with the Mario IP on games of this era (temperarily). I always took account of this so I always never thought the game aged, it was always how a reimagining was supposed to be. It did what it wanted to even if people think it looks bad now. I think it mainly looks fine (except the paintings.)

    tbh what bothers me a lot of the DS controls is the run button lol, and the physics as they were clearly changed for the game and idk, I don't feel them as satisfactory as the ones in 64, tbf luigi kinda fixes that with his very big jumps or yoshi with his flutter, but i dont like using as much Mario in that game, not because he sucks, if not because I like doing many things in the 64 version while in ds i just go the normal path for example, tbf is not that bad, as I did complete it, but yeah to me 64 is just better in how it feels, while the DS ones are fine just i dont like them as much

      Curious, what do you mean by weird? And please don't tell me this is another discussion about the aura lol

      @@NintenDeennah, not the aura. It's like, there's just little design choices that I find weird, like how only Mario can open Star doors, only Mario can fight bowsers.
      Stuff like that. I'm not the best at explaining what I feel, but it's just little stuff like that.

      @@camharkness i believe its just the final bowser level that only mario is able to enter. yeah you still need mario to open the doors but the game doesnt stop you from swapping your character afterwards and beating bowser (the first two bowser stages) as yoshi or something. also if you're curious, bowser's fire randomly spawns one of the caps if you enter the fight as yoshi.

    I don't even like calling this game Super Mario 64 DS because it is a huge downgrade, it doesn't even look like an N64 game, it looks more like a PS1 game

      "PS1" game is a great way to describe the looks of this game I think lol. It has that same grainy look to it now in hindsight too

    I have always hated 64 DS not for the controls but for one very simple reason: it wasn’t OG 64. My parents got it for me back in the day and my expectation was that it was literally Mario 64 ported to the DS. When I found out it wasn’t and it had a bunch of extra stuff in it, I stopped playing it immediately and have refused to play it to this day
