The map in a way you could tell was the original intention for the cave. There was always a map within the cave that was... there... but easy to ignore since it felt like a background element more than a map. I mean, granted, I think I was just being a dumb kid and the map is obvious NOW, but I don't think I was the only one that kind of... skimmed past the map in the OG.
You're not alone. I almost never looked at the map and felt it was too complicated as a 6 year old lol. And even if I did look at it, I didn't memorize it or take a picture of it so it didn't help much when I got lost lol
"Easy to ignore because it felt like a background element"? You know every map has a sign in front of them, even the map showing the toxic maze. I am sure I wasn't the only one who read ALL of the signs and Toads back when I was a kid
You weren't the ONLY one, but you'd be surprised how many people don't read in game instructions (me included, especially back then lol). I like to learn the game myself, it's why I never bothered with game manuals as a kid too until after beating the game haha
@@NintenDeen Same. But for me, the game just wasn't available in Dutch and I didn't really master English or another supported language yet. I didn't get much of the texts. :')
3:47 What you wish is similar to what they did to ghost house levels in New Super Mario Bros. You can't see where you are on the bottom screen in those levels.
Dude! Thank you so much I was literally trying to remember which game it was from. I kept thinking it was in 64DS while I was playing so I was wondering why it wasn't getting blocked off
I noticed the DS version added a glass panel covering the balcony where the secret of the haunted books star is. Probably because they realized a lot of players could cheese the star by using triple jumps.
You don't even need the Mega Mushroom to break the boulders. Wario can also just punch or kick them.
Interesting, never bothered to try that lol
@@NintenDeen And what's more, you can see the boulder the star is in on the map, so you don't even have to guess and risk missing your punch and getting hit on a boulder that isn't even your target.
Althought it does ruin the mystery of the star, I don't think it matters, since the same issue would've happened if the star was where it was in the original.
you can also do this to the steel balls in bob-omb battlefield
@@adianlmao The Tox Boxes in Shifting Sand Land too. Wario can knock them off of the "maze" and into the sand by punching them from the inside
@@theking8347 lol now that you mention it i think i saw a video of someone doing that a while back. wario might not be as useless as we thought… 👀
I think its worth noting that the toxic maze in the remake now knocks you back slightly instead of simply draining your life, which is an annoying change
Correct. I think it's to better highlight they wanted players to use metal cap instead of treating it like a time challenge
I didn't play the original, only the DS remake. Was the original toxic maze more like the cold water in the second snow stage? Draining your energy but nothing else?
@@KingYoshi93 that's how it was in the original. You can walk through it and take damage, like swimming in cold water
The knockback was super annoying. I think it also applied after every jump too.
@@KingYoshi93It drains your health as you walk through it. Mario doesn't really react to it in any other way.
This is my favourite video essay series. You do a great job of making it very comfy and atmospheric.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying it :)
Yoshi not being able to kill boos is made so only Mario is able to unlock Luigi. But it would be nice if they found a way to do that without gatekeeping Yoshi from an entire level
he can't ground pound them? it's been so long since I played so Idr
@liljuz1981 tried that too. The boos get knocked back but don't die
Luigi can't break the haunted book star since in the remake they add a wall around the star. The devs realised from the original game how easy it was to cheese
Man imagine if Wario could not swim, but sink and rise in the water fast whilst holding his breath twice as long as the rest of the cast.
It would've added so much potential for underwater parts of levels, but you stil need the metal cap to be invincible, hold your breath longer and walk through bubbles.
That said, I agree a lot with your points in this video, especially Hazy Maze Cave.
The stage already had maps plastered everywhere, but having it on the screen at all times is so much better!
Thanks for this video and I wish you a happy new year ^-^
Are you going to make an extra bonus episode for stuff you learned through the comment section or addres stuff you discovered in levels, after already having released an episode about that level?
Thanks for the wishes and likewise!
And unfortunately no after I wrap up these last few videos I'm going to need a loooong break from creating Mario 64 videos lol. I'll try and bring up some points from the comments during the secret stars/conclusion video though
Man your channel will be huge !! I absolutely love your videos
Hazy Maze Cave was my last level discovered when playing Mario 64 the first time. I wasn’t gonna jump in that death-looking pool….. Until GameFAQS told me to :P
Weird that they made Yoshi outright unable to enter Big Boo's Haunt because Boos can't be eaten nor can Yoshi's Ground Pound defeat them. The former makes sense, the latter doesn't.
It was probably so you can't skip Mario
If you could enter Big Boo's Haunt with Yoshi he could unlock Luigi without ever unlocking Mario and then get Wario from there.
@@luckyfini Ah, makes sense
Luigi actually does break a couple of stars in Hazy Maze Cave. You can skip the entire labyrinth by riding the elevator down to Dorries cave, take the flower, then ride it back up and simply walk through the gate to get the star (you might even be able to get the flower at the start of the stage and reach the gate in time, I can't remember). As for the emergency exit star at 10:05, you can simply backflip up to the platform with Luigi. And I think you can also use the flower to pass through the gate for the Metal Wario can move star.
Yeah I was back and forth on the exit star because there are some simpler ways to break it with a long jump as Mario too. But someone mentioned you can do the backflip from the black brick below. I haven't tried that, definitely would have counted it in that case lol.
As far as the other 2 stars, using his invisibility does break the intended way to grab the star but I don't think it drastically makes it easier. It's more like an alternative or work around
@@NintenDeen I agree with Metal Wario can move, since you go the same path anyway. But skipping the maze entirely is even more cheese, than backflipping in CCM to the walljump star imo. The intention behind the maze star is to solve a puzzle: You go to Dorries cave, when you see the star behind the fence. You spot the door on the other side and try to figure out where the entry may be located. You backtrack and explore the right side of the level, maybe even attempt to decipher the map on the wall. You enter the toxic maze and search for the hidden exit (which took me months to find as a kid). Eventually you find the exit and get to the other side of the fence.
But in the DS version it's much simpler. The moment you spot the power flower right next to the elevator it's obvious, that you can just go back up again and pass through that fence, thereby making the original path to the other side of the room not only optional, but kinda pointless. Either the devs forgot about Luigi's ability in that instance or they didn't view it as an issue. Which is funny considering they put a glass cage in Big Boos Haunt around the book star, because people jumped to the star in the original instead of taking the 10 second detour through the library.
That's fair. I think I'm so far removed from the first time I did that star that I hardly remember how much of a puzzle it was
Actually, Luigi's backflip is useful for the a maze zing emergency exit star, I found out if you stand on the right corner of the black brick then backflip up, he actually reaches that platform! Figured that one out myself
Oh that's interesting lol. I wanna try it now
@@NintenDeen and not to mention you can also use his vanish ability to reach to the navigation through the toxic maze star too without going through the maze, if you're fast enough that is
This is is such a great series, never played the DS version so it’s fun to see the differences. Thanks!
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I'm just glad Dorrie got the vision eye care she desperately needed.
Big Boos Haunt could have used mist to offuscate your map, or even change the map to trick you into believing there are no rooms or that the star is running away from you.
Since the stage is about Boos, it's a miss opportunity.
Agreed. They could've manipulated the map to make it more interesting
This series got me back into a mario 64 binge
I'd consider that a success 😎
The main thing I prefer about Big Boo's Haunt in DS is that the controls make platforming much slower and more methodical than the fast paced N64, which I found to be annoyingly hard to control
Yeah I get that. That's why I had to make a statement early on to assume controls were even across both versions lol. Because once that discussion comes into play it'll be too hard to actually determine which stage is better since the controls someone may favor would sway their decision
I have one very big problem with Hazy Maze Cave DS: The toxic maze. In the N64 version, the player gradually loses health, but in DS, the player stops every 2 seconds to do the damage animation. It makes that part of the level so much worse. And that's coming from a SM64DS fan.
That's a good shout! I believe that was done to give more significance to the metal cap, they didn't want players to skip it and grab the star like you could in 64
At first I thought it was kind of stupid for them to replace the gas in the toxic commise. But now I understand why they did it. Because it makes it way too easy to get the stars.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Luigi's intangibility power breaking 'Navigating the Toxic Maze'.
From standing on the black brick? Below?
@@NintenDeen You must be thinking of 'A-Maze-Ing Emergency Exit'. 'Navigating the Toxic Maze' is the star behind the fence in the room above the underground lake. With Luigi you can get the Power Flower meant to be used for Metal Head Wario Can Move, ride back up the elevator to the room above, and pass through the gate to grab the star. Did you not know about this?
@devonm042690 woops, yeah I replied to you instead of another commenter.
I don't think using Luigi for that really breaks the star, I think it's just alternative way to grab it. Plus I'm trying to focus on his backflip specifically
@@NintenDeen I can understand the focus on his backflip, but you don't think using Luigi's intangibility to skip having to navigate the toxic maze breaks _'Navigating the Toxic Maze'?_
@@NintenDeen Since the original level doesn't have powerups other than Metal Caps, I think it should be considered in the comparison as well. Some levels can be completely broken because of the new powerups like the first Bowser stage. In the case of the Maze star, the fence was never intended to be passed through. In the original, it was merely a tease and a puzzle for the player to figure out. You would pass by it when going to Dorrie's cave, and wonder how to get to that other end to the room. The solution is that the entry is in the complete opposite side of the level through the Maze. Luigi straight up cheeses that star by simply going the elevator down, grab the flower, then back up and through the fence. If Luigi's backflip is considered breaking a star instead of an alternative approach, then this is clearly a case of cheesing a star as well.
i do like that watch for rolling rocks is still possible without the mushroom as long as you punch with Wario.
while im talking about Wario, i find it funny if he ground pounds a sign it goes all the way into the ground, or you can walk behind a sign and pick it up. (on that note it takes others two pounds, and they can still read the sign while its halfway in the ground and they crawl to see it.)
bet you probably didnt know Wario can kill tox boxes by punching or jumping inside one. I like punching them towards the sand so i can have some decorative objects in the stage.
I knew about the signs and ground pounds but I only recently found out about the tox boxes. Also about metal wario apparently being able to walk on the lava. I hardly use wario so there's a lot I don't know about his abilities haha
In Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS there is also a Dorrie in a poison-filled jungle level where you have to ride Dorrie to get across the poisonous water. The Dorrie there also has the same design as in Super Mario 64 DS.
True. NSMB came out after so they took the design from 64DS I'm guessing
NSMB repurposed a lot of models from 64DS. Those sharks too for example. Whomps. Probably more.
@@KingYoshi93 NSMB also reuses the minigames
Congrats for 5.000 subs!
Thanks!
You can actually reach the switch stars with Wario, it's just really tight.
When I played Super Mario World and saw those dolphins for the first time, they immediately made me think of modern Dorrie, as I played 64DS and NSMB before that. So I'm pretty sure Dorrie's modern design is based on that. I feel a bit mixed on which Dorrie design I prefer. In general I prefer the modern one because it fits that cartoony style more and it's a bit more unique with those goggles. But on the other hand it fits the mysterious place of Hazy Maze Cave less.
Being caught up means I gotta waaaaaaait 😭 Oh well, time to check out your catalogue of content!
I'd say my quality picks up starting from earlier this year in May (probably my Sonic And the Black Knight video). But everything before that can still be enjoyed if you have a bit more tolerance for bad editing haha
@ Oh please dude your content is golden regardless 👌
I don’t know if it was just me, but I got lost more than once in Big Boo’s Haunt as a kid, especially in the basement. I think the map is an improvement there.
I'm sure it's not just you. I used to get lost too but it wouldn't take FOREVER to figure out where I was like in HMC
@ ironically, I don’t remember getting lost in HMC nearly as much as BBH.
Wario can actually punch the rolling boulders and break them that way. It requires good timing though.
Happy New Year!
Ye, Happy new year
Likewise! 🥳
Happy New Year, NintenDeen! 😄🎉✨
Thanks!!
Only thing I do not like about DS Hazy Maze Cave: when the fog deals damage, it pushes you! In 64 you just keep running while losing health, in the DS version, your navigation through the maze keeps getting interupted, unfortuantely.
they gave the hazy maze cave dragon goggles?! What the hell??
This made me lol
Happy new year!
Likewise 🥳🥳
I wanna point this out. Apparently Dory is a male.
If you read the sign. It says he's a male which is confusing because I thought Dory was a girl's name.
It's kinda weird that this is a comparison video but you show no visuals from the original game (which you are comparing the DS version to).
True, I probably could have gone about showing 64 footage for some of the changes
See I just can't get behind the maps in this version of the game, the whole point of The Mario Games was always exploration and figuring things out by yourself with a few small hints on signs and things. Putting them on a map showing their locations ruins the fun and charm of exploring the stages.
I can see why it would ruin it for you. For me it doesn't ruin it but rather it feels like a different experience. Sometimes I rather know where to go lol
I like the N64 version of the two places and that’s why they’re the best! I like Dorrie from the original game better!! Dorrie was in many Mario games.
All my homies love dorrie
im sorry, but im getting a fair notion that youve not played much of either game. You've gotten somethings wrong and straight up missed some changes. Like the power block on top of the mansion thats not inthe original, and hazy maze cave you stated the left side is easier in the ds to long jump between cause there are steps in the ds .. there are steps in the orignal as well
Lol I'm a human prone to mistakes.
I didn't find the power block to be something that drastically alters the experience, although it saves a bit of time.
And in regards to the steps, that's my bad. Some of these changes start to blur after a while
while I agree with you on the steps, he directly stated he's only really mentioning major changes to the levels. the power block isn't a significant enough change to really need mentioned.
Considering the og of the game has the power block in the main lobby of the mansion, where you need to be fast enough to get up to the balcony and get passed the wall. I'd say otherwise, cause now you just go through a door, get block, walk through the door and just casually go through the wall
Edit: Yes, I know a absurd amount of Mario 64.. it makes takes me back, in a fun way of course, when someone misses something or discovers something they never seen before. Hell I have knowledge not many people even realize
I can't stand the DS remake. All the excessive features, powerups, random character additions (seriously, why the fuck is Wario in this) and changes to the overall look of the game just screams Nintendo going "Ok, how can we make this game even MORE babbi gaem? Think we can get the toddlers hooked?"
Actually, you can get both switch stars with Wario.
Correct, but it's drastically easier to switch out characters
