Can Level III Armor Survive UNRATED Threats at Range?

  • RMA BODY ARMOR: www.rmadefense.com/?rfsn=59599...
    In this video, we throw threats at this NIJ Certified, Level III plate from RMA Defense, that it is NOT rated for, but at a longer range out to nearly 300 yards to see if the reduced velocity and energies can be defeated. These lightweight plates will stop full power threats up to M80 Ball, but can they survive a beating from M855 (Level III+ Threat) or 7.62x54R Light Ball (Level IV Threat) at standoff distances?

      90% (or more!) of bad guys use handguns. In 2019 (last year if the calculated stats) only 297 total rifle shooting in entire US and I cannot think of even one that was verified as using M855 green tip rounds on purpose to penetrate armor. Bottom line, you’re prepared for something VERY unlikely to ever happen. Honestly you’re in much, much, much more danger driving your car and being killed in an accident. Or dying from a heart attack from eating badly. But dedicated armor for M855 green tip is a solution looking fir a problem that really doesn’t exist.

      I see Shawn's point though, if you're going from soft to hard armor (as you say almost all shootings with handguns and thus soft is enough for that 90%) you may as well get as much protection as can be offered as its going to be less pleasant to wear no matter what.

      Simply put, velocity defeats armor. Any of the belted magnums (7mm, 300WM, 416, so on) will cut straight through any modern body armor. Steel, ceramic, composite, the material does very little to make a difference. Best advice is keep your head down and hope someone isn't channeling Simo, or you're f*cked.

    • @ricksanchez9669
      @ricksanchez9669 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stillenacht8518 no offense but you're just wrong. Ar500 steel will stop 7mm and 300wm hollow points just fine. Velocity does defeat body armor, but the make up of the projectile is very important. A tungsten core bullet at 2400fps will outperform a HP hunting round at 3200fps, every time.

    Hey Eric, just a real quick. Awesome video. But the PSOP you have there is not the original issue for the PSL rifle. The Cugir PSL rifles made for the Romanian military were sent out with matched Romanian made LPS/TIP2 4x6 scopes. Civilian market PSLs are not shipped with these anymore, and most of the time are shipped with Belarusian or Russian PSOP scopes that were not the original scopes as the LPS/TIP2 scopes are rather uncommon nowadays.

    I don’t know anyone that wants armor that won’t stop 5.56. This day and age with the way the country and political atmosphere is, everyone that I know of training and kitting up FOR 5.56 (and larger)! The most common and most likely caliber you will face in any future conflict. Anything under? Why bother?!
    I’ll wear my steal plates. Got used to wearing them in the military and have continued to have and train with them. I KNOW mine will stop 5.56 and larger. I’ll take the weight and security of mind over light weight and keep my fingers crossed!

    In my testing, spartan lvl 3 steel armor will stop 5.56 M193 from a 20" barrel at 75yds, polyethylene might be lightweight but it lacks composition.

    • @that_guy_3714
      @that_guy_3714 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair m193 is just lead core FMJ while m855 has a steel penetrator, like Eric said design of the bullet as well as velocity

      @@that_guy_3714 m855 steel tip is for cold war era soviet helmets, it actually does less to armor compared to m193 because of the lower velocity.

    • @TheBamidd
      @TheBamidd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SuspiciousGanymede that depends on the type of armor. Most UHMWPE lvl3 plates will stop M193 at close distance, but need considerable standoff for M855 due to bullet composition differences.

    • @nemisous83
      @nemisous83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@that_guy_3714 yes but level iii steel will stop M855, steel works differently than ceramic. The reason why M193 will penetrate at 25 feet is because steel is rated by velocity so if the bullet exceeds the velocity threshold of the plate it will go through and M855 isn't traveling fast enough to go through the plate. Also the "steel tip" isn't hardened steel its just mild steel the penetrator was designed to go through Soviet steel helmets at like 300 yards.

    • @nemisous83
      @nemisous83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBamidd thats largely because ceramic and UMWPE plates are better at soaking up high velocity threats but are very poor against heavy threats like M855, M80, and 7.62x39 in the latter two cases it will stop them but have significant back face deformation.

  • @UponGiantsShoulders
    @UponGiantsShoulders 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love this test... but... its going to just be answering the question... at what velocity does the threat become normalized. I often remind my fellows my 12.5 inch .308 is sending the projectile at velocities equal to an 18 inch barrel at about 200 yards. So shave 200 yards off and that is the equal, basically. I am just spitballing here from memory but that is about it.
