I like how you threw the toughest threat at the plate first instead of beat the crap out of it with lesser threats compromising the plate. It seems to be a more realistic test.

Granted, all my plates are metal, but this plate looks like it's an inch and a half thick on video. Very light though. Perhaps worth looking into(or would be if I didn't already have 4 plates and 3 carriets/rigs that I'll likely never need/use in an actual firefight.)

Purchased 9 stripper clips with 90 rounds of M855A1 at a NY Antique show 4 years ago. At the time I wasn’t aware what I’d purchased for $25. Nice to see a performance review, and since I don’t expect to ever engage beyond a hundred yards, it’s effectiveness.

Yeah that was an absolute steal. The only way to get it is if someone smuggles it out of an armory. Wish they sold surplus like m855 because its actually really effective against just soft tissue as well. There are some videos of guys testing it in gel and it looks really nasty. Would be the ultimate round to stockpile considering its very good at defeating armor and good in soft tissue.

Why? The most common hunting rounds are 30-06, 308, 6.5 CM, 30-30, and 270. Of all of those the 30-06 has the most penetrating power due to the bullet size and barre exit velocity. If it’s capable of holding a 30-06 black tip (which is what it’s rated for), the calibers with lower Ft-Lb/energy and lower velocity will not go through

I have shot 444 Marlin through a disc used in farm equipment at about 10-15 yards in both FMJ and Hornady XTP hollow point. We shot a plow shear too and the 444 FMJ punched a golf ball sized hole through it, we found the top piece and the bottom but the rest was smithereens.
The bullet diameter there is .429. Couldn’t penetrate the flat thick center part of the disc where the hub is but did tear 1 1/2” back the thickness of the material.
I think some chunky hunting rounds would definitely be worth testing. I bet a 375 H&H would be tough to stop too, especially in a solid like a grand slam big game round.
PS The other rounds we tried basically turned themselves inside out on the plow shear except the .223 FMJ made a bearing sized nick in the edge.

@@scottlawrence1826 M855A1 stands no chance of defeating Level IV, at least from a single or at least quite a few shots evenly placed per NIJ testing. Of course in an actual engagement, if you could place 2 rounds very close to each other (inside of 2") the second one has a chance of penetrating because the ceramic strike face would be compromised by the first.
Defeating ceramic armor is more about speed. It plays heavily into bullet construction, as well as appropriate speed. M995 AP is currently the known "king of the hill" for what I would consider armor piercing 5.56, and most level IV will stop it at NIJ distance (45') from a 22" barrel.

@ ~ 10:50 mark, that's a large part of the reasoning behind NGSW and 6.8mm Common Cartridge: 855A1 simply poops out against even lighter armor, past c. 130 yards. And that's coming out of the 18 inch barrel; out of a 16 inch barrel, let alone 14.5 inch, the velocity would be even less.

The plate did indeed stop the round from entering my chest but the impact still broke 3 ribs and brused my left lung. The impact did knock me off my feet (but not blow me back 10 feet like you see in the movies). Take-home point, High Level plates can stop rifle bullets but don't think you are just going to get back up like nothing happened,

Every time you fire I cry a little for your AR. The a1 is, if memory serves, only 10k less pressure than the standard 5.56 barrel proofing cartridge (60,000 vs 70,000). Proofing rounds are not at all intended for anything other than proofing the barrel, 1 or 2 and done arguably for the lifetime of the barrel. Repeatedly firing, especially rapidly, the a1 drops your barrel life by about half and will, if rngesus is against you, snap your bolt (500-1000 rounds), beat the dog shit out of your recoil system, and occasionally splits a crack into a receiver once you break 1000rds (assuming something else didn't fail before you got to 1k).
It's a great round. I very nearly bought a bunch after I fired some before doing the due diligence on a cartridge I wasn't familiar with. The problem with the a1 is that there isn't currently a rifle that exists that can run it consistently without the ammo eating the rifle instead of vice versa. If someone can channel the spirits of Kalashnikov, and Browning and modify the AR platform to take the pressure beating that ammunition dishes out I'd buy one just so I could keep a couple magazines exclusively loaded with a1.
good ammo, but damn it's angry. lmao

I would also love to see some super hot 6ARC loadings tested vs various armor! I have a feeling that because of the design of the round (high bc ect) it will slip right through that armor! Especially a light for caliber, like 80 grain out of a full length 6ARC SPR.

Very interesting, with round to round minor velocity differences and minor manufacturing variations of the plate that stand off distance might vary a few yards either way shot to shot placement to placement, heck even if the angle of the plate is a few degrees tilted the apparent thickness changes minutely but all these things could go for you or maybe they could stack up the other way too.
30-06 is an effective round in most loadings, amazing that it’s over 100 years ago that was adopted and it’s still a formidable cartridge. I have never fired one but I have heard enough stories to know they’re effective.
Have you thought about trying a hunting round like a 444 Marlin with a soft point ? They say that at about 100 yards and under that’ll take any animal in North America. That round I have fired. Based on what some reloads can do from a 14” pistol barrel to a water jug or a disc blade it would be interesting to see what a rifle would do with a few more inches of barrel against a plate.

The plate with with stands these threats. Wli it stop hunting rounds my answer would be yes but the back face deformation might just kill you. Use your 9.3 mmx63mm with a heavy bullet see the plate with most likely stop it as small and fast and it might pass the backface deformation would be interesting
