    All my years as a fabricator, remodeler, repairman, mechanic and many other hats I wear, and all I've ever known or thought about was a dressing wheel! This was informative and well enough done to make me want to improve my 3 shop grinders, and don't you worry about the language police my friend; they can probably barely spell their own names.
    Go with God, always!

      English is the Lingua Franca (common language) of the world. Curiously, the ones who speak English the worst are Americans. There are too many grammatical and punctuation errors in your comment to bother correcting.
      As for god, you are better off with a dog.

    The clearest video I have seen on this subject, many thanks. I'm tuning an old Ferm FSM-200 which was my Dad's. This grinder is poorly designed as the inner pressed steel clamp washer is located by a circlip in an oversized groove that the clamp washer rocks in.

    Good video. I bought a 8" bench grinder today and the runout on one of the wheels was around 2mm. After a bit of messing around I got it pretty good, but I'm going to use your method to fine tune it.

  • @andrewbieger5004
    @andrewbieger5004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Awesome video, my friend. Using the tape trick, you have shown an alternate method of handling the runout from the wheel flanges, which are usually stamped steel and rarely true. Much better option than trying to true the flanges.
    This is great news for all of us with cheaper grinders that need some help. As long as the motor shaft runout is minimal, you have it covered.

    Man, that sticker balancing is very, very clever and a cheap way to true a wobbly grinding stone on any grinder. I just tried it on my big 25cm diameter grinding discs, and it works like a charm! Thank you very much! You are a genious! Davor

    This was an extremely useful video for me. I am new to bench grinding, bought a cheap grinder 8" from Harbor Freight and this thing bucks like a wild horse at a rodeo! I researched so many 6" bench grinders - Palmgren, Dewalt, Rikon, Baldor ( way too pricey), Sears Craftsman, Ryobi, Porter Cable.... etc! Exhausting job. They are all built cheaply in China with bad QC. Even though Metabo is built in China, it is German engineered and QC is probably better. The first thing I noticed was that the wheel guard housing was heavy duty, no sharp edges and flimsy steel, and easy to remove. This is a huge plus. It looks solidly built. Your wheel truing and balancing was very informative but I also got to see how the Metabo works. The 6" grinder is affordable at under $200 USD. Not bad. Dewalt 6" is only $100 currently on Amazon, but the hand rests don't even line up to the wheel and you cannot put a 1" thick wheel on it, as the spindle is too short, sheesh! Terrible design! Someone on Amazon reviewed the Palmgren 6^ and said he liked it better than Dewalt and gave the reasons why, but Palmgren still has 2 pages of 1 star reviews - not good! I think Metabo is the one for me! Very grateful for the wheel balancing and a demo of Metabo as well.
    fyi - Your audio is sub par and hard to hear. To remove background noise add a 'wind sock' fluffy cover on your microphone. It will reduce background noise. Another way is to get a shirt microphone to attach on your collar for clear audio track. Speak up loudly.

    Good video, but need to check wheels for out of true very low speeds - essentially static true of wheel. Check for side and face runout first. If there is a problem. Remove wheels and check motor under power for balance and turning by hand for true. Ok? Then check for runout in wheel washers - common problem - I think washers may be getting bent in shipment with wheels mounted. Checking with pencil for high speed is a good idea. You can check slow speed with marker pen. Then remove washers and spin wheel on stationary shaft to check for loose fit on shaft. New bushing or shimming with tape may be needed. Once the wheels are properly mounted, then start where the gentleman started. Note the the grinder was still a little buzzy after he was finished.

    Great Video very informative Thanks very much.
    To all the people claiming the "left wheel" is on the wrong way, it was not! @ 7:51 you can see the presenter turning the motor side of the wheel towards the camera. This is necessary to high lite the pencil markings he has been using to indicate running errors.
    I too would like it done at a slower speed as others have commented. But the owner of a new grinder who wants to sharpen a chisel etc isn't going to buy / make a static balancer ;)
    This is an excellent example of educating a broad audience on an issue they were unaware of :D

    Great video, I'm sure this guy is Filipino and unlike some I don't have any problem understanding him unlike some people who say his English is terrible, at least he knows how to speak two languages, the reason I say he's Filipino is because of the sound in the background at around 7:30 gave it away, the roar of a jeep net passing.

    Excellent, I was wondering if you would address the wobble and how to tune.
    Simply foolish not to invest some time into shimming out the side wobble. I end up with wheels on my machines for years... have three. I have three that vibrate like old washing machines. That's a great tip using small labels. I often shim with aluminum cans and foil but aluminum won't stick as labels will. Soon as I get some time I'll do the same. A really good tip for a tool that is always running. Thanks Much.

    Lived with vibration for years. It was out of round and wobbled side to side. I tried the tape for the side to side and it didn't work. I did something that is probably a huge no no. I used my diamond dresser on the sides of the wheel. Almost all vibration gone.

    The first bench grinder I ever owned, I purchased new, at a flea market, for $10. No brand name, no stickers, just a nice, new appearing, 8" grinder. I put it on my bench, plugged it in, turned it on, and it bounced and danced right off the edge of the bench. Hey, I was 18, and stupid. Now I'm 66...... and still do stupid things occasionally. But at least I never bought a no brand power tool again, and got a cheap lesson on power tool safety. In retrospect, watching a new device so out of balance, bounce and dance around was pretty funny.

  • @dawsoncanfield5386
    @dawsoncanfield5386 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is only partial. A bit dangerous to do on a bench grinder, but you can true the sides of the wheel also. I have done it on surface grinders more than once. Simple process, clamp a diamond to the bench in some way, and just touch the side of the wheel. Inside and outside.
    Also, it looked like his wheel bushing was too short for the wheel. It should go through the wheel far enough to stabilize the wheel completely, instead of just holding it with the nut and washers.

    Man, we need to check how good the balance of each abrasive wheel is. Moreover, each circle must be checked separately. The abrasive material is not uniform, so even if the disc is perfect in geometry, one edge will still be a little heavier, which means there will be vibration. There are many videos on TH-cam on balancing abrasive wheels.

    Very important to dress a grinding wheel to get rid of imbalance. It's like balancing a car's wheels. Fit a fixed shoulder piece on top of tool rest and you will be able to move dressing tool in a straight line across edge of wheel to remove imbalance and have a flat surface for sharpening your drills. Never grind on the side of a grinding wheel - EVER.

      Good observation. I checked Norton site and the wheels from the manual does not mention the rotation direction. Should be good as it is since it is the same kind of wheel.

    All those videos about tuning $200 bench grinders are telling me it's a waste of time. I'll make myself a collar, put it perfectly on any shaft, 2 bearings and I'll drive it with a belt with almost any motor. I need it balanced and quiet, not for making anvils out of rails. Companies make them 500 Watts because it's cheaper than actually balancing the rotating assembly.

    Dressing a wheel is not the same as balancing it.. You have equipment to dress the wheel, but not to balance it..
