Hi, I'm Joëlle, bicycle mechanic and trainer at the CyCLO DIY workshop in Brussels. A few days ago, I passed a qualification exam of wheelbuilding. The wheel fulfilled almost all of the jury's requirements. I obtained 95%, because a wheel can never be perfect ;-) Dear Calvin and Truman, THANK YOU very much for the great videos! Always very instructive and nice to watch. Let's keep learning👩‍🔧

hi, i ve built a wheel using this tutorial and a couple others. i had to tighten the spokes afterwards 2-3 times after i rode on that wheel but i think i did about 1500 km on that wheel and no spoke broke yet. It has been a fun process for me, i ve built it in a couple of days, i think i worked on it about 30 mins each day. this tutorial has been very helpful to me, its nice because i could follow along while building the wheel.

Wheel building is an amazingly liberating experience!! Was a USCF Cat III many years ago and was on a 250-mile per week regime back in the day. Blew up a wheel on Sunday morning and would be doomed to miss my training ride. So, I cracked a book, de-laced the potato-chipped wheel, got a new MA-40 and replacement spokes and began lacing. The WHOLE KEY was spoke length. From that moment on, I went on a wheel building binge -- even doing it for my team mates! I became a cycling God and the go to wrench for those guys.
Nossir! No more begging for autographed water bottles or old jerseys from the arrogant shit Cat IIs on the team! _THEY_ made appointments with me and I made them grovel. I even got one of 'em to give me leadouts on the 30 and over weekly crits in exchange for building him wheels!

Thank you ParkTools. This video saved me a bunch of money and is keeping me ridding. I was having issues with my current wheel set, so I figured a spare was in order. After searching internet and being told it would be weeks or months until a new set, i ordered the parts and got to work. It has taken me about two weeks to build the set, only working on in the evenings. I am more than satisfied with my results, I not only learned how to build a strong wheel, but learned what can make a wheel strong and keep it true and reliable. I didn’t go crazy high end with the wheel set, but i did get quality parts that should last until i tackle another set of wheels or rebuild the current set i have. Thank you again

i've built bikes from raw frame up but never a wheel.
a relative recently had an issue with some broken spokes, even after it'd been to his lbs.
i was not confident and watched some other videos that frankly left me totally confused.
i then found this video - wow - shining a light thru the murk!!!
best produced and clearest, most concise explanation of the entire wheel building process by miles.

Flash forward a couple of years, me needing to build a rear wheel without an instructor to correct me and failing miserably on several occasions using the printouts. It has been two years since I built up wheels for my GasBike. As per your video, they were 3 cross lacing. Followed instructions, so it was straight forward. Two years later and I am finally getting around to lacing up a wheel for my Ebike. Difference is it is a 2 cross. I went back to your video to review, but was not quite sure if the process was the same, so i started to look at other videos showing a specific 2 lace process. They were completely crap. What I realized how good your video is, so with a minor adaptation it was an easy build. You and Park Tools are to be commended for your superior product.

Great video! I've already built a few wheels myself and was watching to learn any new tips and tricks. One that helps me a lot, but wasn't mentioned here, is to number the spokes after lacing to help keep track during tensioning and truing. I write the spoke number starting at the valve hole in marker pen on the brake-track of each side (in this case 1 to 16). This helps me to remember which spoke I just tightened/loosened and which are loose or tight.

I built a rare 2020 atomlab pimplite custom wheelset, for my dirt jump bike, and those are the roundest and the straightest wheels i've built so far.
When built with a gauge, the wheels were at 130 kgf within a margin of 2% !! I loved doing it.

Very good video! This helpt me a lot when changing hub on my kids bike for the first time. You can do this without any fancy tools !
If you are going to do this for the firs time i have some good tips.
First of all take off the wheel.
Take a knife and do a scratch where the spokenuts sits on the spoke, do one on each side of the rim.
Take the rubber, hose and rim tape of.
    Take four papers and write.
    Left, inserted from inside out
    Left, inserted from outside in
    Right, inserted from inside out
    Right, inserted from outside in.
Take a small wrench and skrew clockwise to release some tension on all spokenuts. Then use a screwdriver with a flat key, run it counterclockwise from outside of the rim and release all the spokenuts.
When you have the hub free with all the spokes left on it you have to think in the bikes rolling direction. Gear side = right side.
Start to take the spokes out and stay to the same side and type of spoke. *Left side inserted from outside and in* gose on the paper with that text and so on.
You should end up whit four piles of spokes, one pile on each paper. And between 8-9 spokes/pile.
    Then continue as the video.
When your done and you have all spokes in place you can place the wheel one the bike (upsidedown)
Use the screwdriver clockwise and tightening the nut but leave one milimeter left from the scratch.
Then you can take two zip ties one on each leg.
One on the side of the rim and on over the rim.
Then yo have to practice and learn what's happening and tightening the nuts. Use the small wrench now and tightening a little all the way around until the weel is straight and have some tension in the spokes. Sometimes you have to undo on one side to get it right but you will lern !
I did all this in just 2 hours and ended up with a straight rim. Good luck 🤞

Superb didactics, both in word and image. With other benevolent videos I quickly lost my way. Building a wheel may now become my ultimate passion. Ha! Thanks a lot.

Great stuff! A little tricky flipping the wheel so much. Just keep track of your spokes and which side they go on during your build. Can’t stress that enough. I also tap the j-bend side of the spokes with a rubber mallet to help seat them

Try doing it on an electric hub motor even harder as you got to order specialised short spokes to fit

I just built my two first wheels, thanks for the amazing explanations ! I had a single difficulty : it was hard to insert the third and fourth sets of spokes because the diameter of the spokes was really close to diameter of the hub holes, and the taping is even adding a bit of width. To solve that, simply "screw" in your spokes in the hub and once the tapping is passed, it should go fine. I also find it easier to insert 1 spoke and fix it before inserting the next spoke for first and second sets. Thanks, again Park Tool ! I am currently building a cargo bike from scratch and your videos are helping so much !

I built a few wheels back in the 80's based on a book by Jobst Brandt called "The Bicycle Wheel" which was a great book but man I would have loved to see it in action like this. I find myself again needing to rebuild one after all these years and am thankful for your demonstration.

Very helpful. I’m putting new hubs on a matched pair of his/hers MTBs. So I have 4 wheels to do.
Except for the garbage hubs the bikes were well spec’d. Neither my psychology or my wallet could cope with replacing perfectly good rims too.
I’ve been doing bike maintenance for over five decades including a lot of wheel truing. This will be an opportunity to finally lace wheels from scratch.
This vid got my mind clear for the task. Thank you.
