    You are definitely a gifted man. I turn as well but I tried to copying your work, although I didn’t have the same wonderful pieces of wood you had, I tried as best as I could but I didn’t get as well even close as well as you do. You are quite an inspiration to be. Your instructions are very clear and concise that you make it make it easy to follow. Thank you for your wonderful presentation and your work. Great to watch!

    Peppermill extravaganza = EXTRAVAGANTLY GORGEOUS pieces of usable art! Each and Everyone of these mills would be worth the price! #gnarlier = more beautiful! From the minimalist green to the stunning purple and gold! 😍💕🎊🎉💫 while blue is not my favorite color, but you might convince me with your favorite mill 😉 its getting close to ultra marine from historical paintings 😃

    I think Gorilla Tape is supposed to be stronger and sturdier than duct tape. I know hockey tape is....Just curious...what do you charge for these pepper mills anyway? Pat yourself on the back...those look amazing!!! I know you touched on the food grade thing and was saying it's not really necessary or whatever...but what about the wood itself...and the resin/epoxy? I mean food (pepper corns) touches those?

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The resin is food safe when fully cured and the cherry is fine for food contact as well. Pricing is tricky and never easy to figure out. These mills should be twice the price from regular mills but that’s a tough sell. Thanks

      One other thing. I have VERY buggy myrtlewood bowl blanks. Approx 12”x 4” thick. I have turn a couple. It’s been around along time and the bugs are gone. After you turn the bowl you can blow out the bug excrement and you are left with lots of bug holes. Would look cool with colored epoxy. Interested? I could check on shipping cost from Oregon to Canada.

    It looked to me like your cylinders were about 3-1/2 inches in diameter, next time why not try 4" PVC pipe as your "mold". You could use a flat cap at the bottom. Make a cut all the way from top to bottom on the tube,. Once you put the cylinders into the pipe, put the cap on the bottom, seal with hot glue. Then when you go to un mold, scrape off the hot glue, pop off the cap and open from the slit in the pipe.
    Just a suggestion, save time & tape, & hot glue! 🙄💗
    Oh, you could tap it on the table while filling to help get more even coverage and fill.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These’s mills were about 2.5 to 3.5” so that would of been a waist of resin, I was thinking of sourcing different sizes of PVC and have them on hand fo just an occasion. The plastic was also used so you could watch at home too. Tapping it is a good idea too, Jim.

    I amazed at how everything you do turns out and it's always beautiful. But when you cast these things in resin you have to know ahead of time that you are going to be doing it. But you don't ever seem to be prepared. There's so many easier and much better ways to prepare for the resin process. The plastic wrap could never work out for what you are doing, theres no way it couldn't leave gaps and voids, which you have to constantly go back and do over. Maybe I'm just wrong but I would have been prepared for the casting process. Why wouldn't you just look ahead and get whatever you might need instead of constantly doing things over again???

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me I don’t care to do things over, there’s not a lot of money in it. Keep in mind when I shot this video I had very little experience with resin, possibly six months so I’m no expert.

    I don't have a P-Pot so I am curious, I use a vaccum chamber to de-gas the resin for my castings, and I never have any bubble issues that can't be fixed with a heat gun, I think in this case the preasure causes the plastic to deform and all that so why not just cast with de-gased resin and skip the pot part?

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pressure pot should push the resin into areas that it ordinarily wouldn’t flow, a vacuum chamber can also do the same but with only a two hour work time you would never be able to get all the air out of the blank, release the vacuum and have the resin penetrate the blank in time before it sets. This is why we prefer to use a pressure pot, thanks

    You'd think they'd have PVC pipe in a similar diameter. They've got that in many sizes and it's relatively easy to cut open if you need to. I saw that girl turner you recommended do this with a smaller diameter. The poly is probably less expensive than PVC pipe tho. The poly also lets you see how well the resin is penetrating, too!
    These are the most beautiful peppermills I've ever seen! I'm also strongly considering eventually doing a set of salt and pepper mills for my house since the ones we currently have are just not matching our color scheme. And really...this is so incredibly beautiful! I hope I'm eventually able to break into an artistic medium where I can do stuff like this too!
    It's funny, the rot is actually the most visually stunning part of the wood on these pieces. It may be awful for the tree, but all these maladies make for some beautiful wood pieces!

    Just a suggestion, look into some PVC pipe from an electrical wholesaler. Maybe even a box store may have it, but I haven't seen anything over 2" ID. Along with some mold release, it should slide out- Although I just turn it off since it is a soft plastic. Happy turning!

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve tried the pvc and the resin stuck bad, I use a crappy mold release so that’s probably the issue.
      Like you said, it turned away easily. I was also using the plastic because it’s cheap and the viewers were able to watch the resin being poured into the blank. It would of been ideal to not have the plastic so tight. I’m pretty sure that’s why there were air pockets in some of the mills. Thanks 🙏

    I have never understood why, when using a slow curing epoxy, it's not better to put the castings in a vacuum chamber first to get the air out [similar to stabilizing] and then into a pressure pot to compress what air is left. Any opinion on that...I haven't tried it yet since I've just started using epoxy have been using a faster curing one. Thanks...pepper mills look great BTW

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I suppose this would be a good idea especially when using the deep cast with a long open time. Perhaps I will do this next time. The bubbles that appeared in the mills are a direct result of the plastic being too tight around the mill blanks. If your using a fast setting resin, you might not have the time to do the vacuum chamber, Jim
