Hi Jim, one of the great values of your presentations is in sharing your problems and solutions. I always learn one or two new "ways of doing cuts, finishes, corrections and so on" It also helps knowing how long it takes you with your experience to make such a nice bowl. I am not an experienced turner and I guess for the time being I can of believe that whatever my intentions, the wood has the last word !
    Thanks !

Been turning for over 30 years. After a hiatus for health reasons I'm taking in a lot of TH-cam vids as I retool my machines for 3 PH 240V - VFD. The current rage seems to be incorporation of epoxy resin. When weighing the nasty mess vs the finished reward I see the most beautiful part of your hard work is viewed looking down at the mouth of the bowl. After doing a lot of "ooing", "Ahhing" and "Damn, that's beautiful!". I recalled an old discussion we had at our Palm Beach County Wood Turners Association meeting. The question was .."What brought each of us to wood turning?". The results clearly indicated that you'd be hard pressed to find a Wood Turner that wasn't a Wood Worker first. On the other hand finding a Wood Worker who was first a Wood Turner is as rare s Hens teeth. What was it about wood turning that drew each of us varied but there were common points that attracted all of us. Short of being gifted a lathe these are the lures...
    (1) Wood Turners rarely work with Big Box dimensioned lumber.
    (2) Because of item (1) turning stock is usually obtained free of charge.
    (3) The stock that turners use would most probably be considered too small or short to be
milled for furniture or cabinetry. Thus destined for the firewood pile, composite lumber,
or Pulp Mill. The vast majority of turning stock is obtained from yard trees.
    (4) Because of item (3) turners will work with wood species that has little or no commercial
    market.
    (5) The most interesting and beautiful grain found in tree growth is also the most unstable or
unusable for use in other wood working disciplines.
    (6) Wood Turners take a step back in history every time they crank up the lathe. Despite the
modern technology found in today's wood shop a turner requires very little of it.
    (7) It's a personal opinion but I feel a Wood Turner is a (none power) Hand Tool Wood Worker.
The only thing the lathe does is rotate the stock. Those are hand tools we're cutting and
shaping with. That gouge or skew chisel is held in my hand. For me it where I find the
    greatest satisfaction.
Thanks for helping me make a decision.
    Wakodahatchee Chris

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I would agree with every statement above. I did woodworking first as well. What really drew me to the lathe was my wife’s uncle. He was a turner and the first time I seen him turn a bowl I was hooked. To take a raw piece of wood and shape it into a useful item in mean minutes was very gratifying to watch. At the time I was a Military mechanic and you would get satisfaction out of working on equipment that was broke but it wasn’t the same as creating something from start to finish.
I never ever envisioned working with epoxy but now I can’t ever think of not working with it, the colors and the thing’s that can be saved and enhance by it are some of the most beautiful work I’ve every done! Thanks 🙏

Jim, that really is a spectacular piece no ? about it!! It's a real shame that it kept separating on you, hopefully you can figure out why that is. I can see more of this style in the future.
Never give up, keep turning (as I know you will ) and I can't wait to see what's next

Like always Jim, fantastic bowl you made. And that you never give up trying to fix the problem with cracking is good. You say it is the tension that makes the wood move even it is dry. I totaly agree about that.
Hope you give an update about the bowl after it has been sitting for a while.
Take care and looking forward for you next video tomorrow.
    Best Regards
    Hans Olav

Another beautiful piece! I watch you because you make amazing pieces but if you just showed the painless pieces, I personally wouldn’t learn much and seeing how you overcome big and small issues helps me think differently as I learn your craft. Thanks again

Another beautiful piece, nice to see you didn’t let it get the better of you. You plowed through the inconvenient delaminating like the seasoned pro that you are.

What a beautiful piece. It’s not everyday that you get to turn two amazing pieces of crotch-grain walnut, at the same time. Great work, and great teaching.
