Baaabbbyyy the things they were doing back in the day really don’t have ANYTHING on what’s going on nowadays!!!!! They were beyond scandalous and truly didn’t give a damn.
Yes Lena was talented, but I never thought she was a great beauty. IMHO, she never held a candle to women like Dorothy Dandridge or Diane Carole. Incidentally, Joe Louis' wife looked better than Lena. Still, I give her credit for her talent and her fight against racism. I also praise her for risking her career to support Dr. .acting Luther King. RIP Lena.
It's actually pretty common knowledge that Lena and Dorothy were not really good friends. Lena did speak very respectfuly of Dorothy in later years and would often refer to her as "our" Marilyn Monroe.
It helped her a little bit until she was black balled from Hollywood& when her movies went down south her clips would be edited out to not offend white audience!! She was not allowed to live in Beverly hills !!! But in the black community yes , because black America especially back then was color struct asf that’s how she was able to work in the cotton club etc

True fact during the filming of " carmen Jones" dorothy dandridge had an affair with the director otto preminger when she became pregnant he forced her to have an abortion.
I also heard that Lena cursed like a sailor and one day cursed out Joe Lewis so bad he slapped her. She eventually forgave him, but their relationship was never the same according to the rumor. Great video per usual tho!!! ❤️
FUN FACT: Lena later went back to school and got her high school diploma. She attended Booker T. Washington HS in Atlanta. The same alma mater as Dr. King and my mother! Shout out to Atlanta Public Schools!

Redd Foxx used to crack me up calling her "The Horne". The men were captivated by her even today. Yes, she was not the only beauty of that time, but nevertheless a beauty she was.
You are leaving out that the part of Julie that went to Ava Gardener in “Show Boat” (1951) was that of a light skinned woman of black heritage, so Lena Horne thought she was perfect and was going to get the part.. Same thing happened to Lena Horne, when she thought she was going to get the part of “Pinky” that was given to Jeanne Crain (who received a Best Actress Oscar nomination). “Pinky” (1949) is the story of a light skinned black woman, who returns to her grandmother's house in the South after graduating from a Northern nursing school. Pinky tells her grandmother, played by Ethel Waters [who received an Oscar nomination in Supporting] that she has been "passing" for white while at school in the North and has fallen in love with a young white doctor, who knows nothing about her black heritage. Both times, Lena Horne was passed over and a white actress got the big part in an Oscar nominated movie for playing a light skinned woman of Black heritage, this is part of the reason why Lena left Hollywood.
Ashley, you had me at Coke Bottle not 2021 Coke Bottle! 😂😂😂 No. Joe Louis was famous, powerful and rich! Those are the stuff most women want! Look at some of these politicians, they do get women, right?!
I LOVE the movie Pinky!! I was today years old when I found out the woman was really white. Thanks for that tidbit. Have you seen Imitation of Life? Was the actress that played the daughter white or was she really black?
@@Thesekidstookmychannel In the first one which was black and white one, Freddie Washington played the character. The second one that everyone know, the actress was white. Sidenote: Hollywood wanted her to pass because they felt she was a great actress. Freddie refused and still worked with the Civil Rights movement.
LOL, my grandmother and Lena Horne were born the same year and looked similar (very light skinned). I remember her saying that Lena was cute and a "singer" but she wasnt a "SANGER". She was ok as far as talent but her skin color & her "ability to talk quick" got her in many doors. After your video, I think my grandmother might have been on to something.
Even with survival, " getting your bag", there has to be boundaries! That's one of our problems as a people, especially these days! - Not enough boundaries!
I'm from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and about 1947, there was a Lena Horne parade for her, which I had gotten permission to join. When she was in the musical on Broadway, I went backstage and chatted with her. She was very tiny and gracious. As a young girl in Bed-Stuy, I was offered a chance to sing, but declined. I went on to Fashion Institute of Technology, started my modeling career. However, I ran into a jealous man like she did, had two children and it ended badly. But I have that Brooklyn spirit and did well with my life. Thank you for the video, it was very enlightening❗👏
I know how Freddie Washinton, felt. You can help somebody get up, and when they do get up, they forget about the bridge that brought them over. It hurts, but I've gotten over it.
Another point of contention: Freddie allegedly had a long-term relationship with Duke Ellington. She even (allegedly) married one of Duke's band members to be near him.
You never fail to make me smile. I really enjoyed this video. I always admired Lena Horn. What a tragic story. I still don’t understand why you haven’t been tapped for television. That was the time Harry Belafonte did the movie with Dorothy Dandridge she was hating on Dorothy. She probably thought Harry Belafonte could have gotten her the role instead
The only person who could have gotten her the role would have been Otto Preminger the producer and director of the film. Had Miss Horne been interested she could have done the same thing MISS Dandridge did. She could have set up a meeting through her agent with Preminger and gone through the audition screen test process. However, when this movie was filmed Miss Horne was too old for the role of Carmen.
Looooord I just loooooove Dorothy Dandridge so much!!!! She’s always been my favorite old Hollywood actress ever!!!! She is sooooo gorgeous in this picture!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
Ashley, I noticed a slam about Lena in the movie Carmen Jones. Pearl Bailey was singing Beat Out the rhythm on the Drum and said…Ain’t gonna worry about Stormy Weather! Then the camera panned in on Dorothy Dandridge. Might have been a little jab there. Keep it coming Ashley…your content is fantastic!!!
Pearl Bailey did not write the lyrics to the song. She just sang the material that was given to her. The camera did not pan in on Miss Dandridge As she was singing the song. You could see Miss Dandridge along with. other people sitting at the bar. from a distance. Had Miss Horne wanted the role she could have arranged a meeting with PRIMInger, through her agent, and gone through the audition/screen test process the same way Miss Dandridge did. However, when the movie was made, Miss HORNE was too old for the role. In a Lena Horne Interview from 'The McCreary Report,' 1988 MIss Horne states that she, herself wasn't that interested in acting. She said Miss Dandridge was beautiful, brilliant, and a great actress. The interview can be seen on TH-cam. This contradicts all the B.S. said in this video.
The brown paper test may not have been used with an actual paper bag, but many places judged you on color. The Cotton Club was infamous for hiring light skin chorus girls only. Many black societies did this as well. It's ugly but our people did and still unconsciously use the "brown paper bag test".

My mom looks just like Lena, the smile and all. Plus Lena has been to our house in DC at least once and my grandmother cooked a meal for her.
You're right many people don't know what marked means, but, I do. My mother taught me what that means. I was born and raised in the south. There is such a thing as marking your children.
I can’t stand females like that, that is so damn sad. Freddie looked out for her and helped her career while she couldn’t even give that woman a call on her death bed. Sounds like a terrible person who was just in her own ego and was about self. These type of personalities burn me up I can’t stand it being that I’m such a selfless person I never understand or get on well with selfish ppl.
Janet Jackson did a Lena movie for TV, but network decided not to air it due to nipplegate happened a few months before planned airing. Like Janet but not the greatest actress & definitely doesn't resemble her. Alicia Keys does look more like Lena.

Great job, Ashley! I was convinced you would sing Stormy Weather for us, in honor of Miss Horne :-). One of the last pictures you had up of Lena Horne, was of course from her appearance on Sanford and Son (my all-time favorite show). I read a biography on Redd Foxx and it said Lena Horne couldn't stand Redd Foxx. She thought he was crude and vulgar and stayed away from him, when they didn't have scenes together.
You missed out on why Ethel Waters disliked Ms. Horne...because of the song STORMY WEATHER. The song was originally ETHEL WATERS song and the powers that be TOOK THE SONG & gave it to Ms. Horne to be her SIGNATURE song and forevermore Ethel Waters hated her....which is sad. MS Horne was a wonderful boss & I performed with her on LENA HORNE: THE LADY & HER MUSIC BROADWAY SHOW. She had magnificent stories about her life and I enjoyed listening to them. She paid us extremely well and she made sure our birthdays were not forgotten and our holidays were great. That’s how much more beautiful she was in person. I ain’t know she was in her 90s when she passed, she stayed looking good to the end. As far as her being shady toward Dihanne Carroll when she was older, I can see that, I think that’s just how it was when black entertainers aged especially back then, she was from the golden age of black entertainment

Baaabbbyyy the things they were doing back in the day really don’t have ANYTHING on what’s going on nowadays!!!!! They were beyond scandalous and truly didn’t give a damn.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I loved that episode
Ooh. Remember when she made a guest appearance on A Different World? That was the BEST!
Fred Sanford had the biggest crush on her too!!! Lol!!
I almost died laughing when you did that scene with Lena in the mink stole and Joe and his wife Marva!!
The 📯 playing in the background had me rolling!😆😂
Yes Lena was talented, but I never thought she was a great beauty. IMHO, she never held a candle to women like Dorothy Dandridge or Diane Carole. Incidentally, Joe Louis' wife looked better than Lena. Still, I give her credit for her talent and her fight against racism. I also praise her for risking her career to support Dr. .acting Luther King. RIP Lena.
Bruhhhh
Lol!😂
Lol Ashley a fool 4 that 🤣
Who else shouted out DOROTHY DANDRIDGE when she got to the mystery lady?!😂😂😂
We already knew!
I definitely did guess it correctly too
It's actually pretty common knowledge that Lena and Dorothy were not really good friends. Lena did speak very respectfuly of Dorothy in later years and would often refer to her as "our" Marilyn Monroe.
🙋🏿♂️🤣🤣
Yep me too😆
Her skin color helped her a lot she had the exotic look of the time nothing has changed in Hollywood though
Wow, genius observation 🙄
Weezy Jefferson not more genus than your reply to my observation
Don't let these weirdos troll you
It helped her a little bit until she was black balled from Hollywood& when her movies went down south her clips would be edited out to not offend white audience!! She was not allowed to live in Beverly hills !!! But in the black community yes , because black America especially back then was color struct asf that’s how she was able to work in the cotton club etc

Rest in peace to the legend Hazel Scott she was a civil rights fighter and nobody gave her credit for the things that she had done fun fact in the movie who shot Rodger rabbit the scene with Donald Duck and Daffy Duck are battling on the pianos that was based on Hazel Scott

So true!
ABSOLUTELY!
YES SHE WAS! SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!

Dianne Carroll was beautiful and graceful as well😍❤️

Redd Foxx used to crack me up calling her "The Horne". The men were captivated by her even today. Yes, she was not the only beauty of that time, but nevertheless a beauty she was.
I was just thinking of him, singing Stormy Monday and talking about “The Horne.”

Wow Thank You For That Info Especially On Pinky I Feel That Role Was Meant For Lena

Ok Bed-Stuy (Do or die)! I too was born in Brooklyn…Crown Heights.

👏👏 I'm running out of accolades for you! You are particularly gorgeous tonight in addition to providing us with another wonderful video.

Looooord I just loooooove Dorothy Dandridge so much!!!! She’s always been my favorite old Hollywood actress ever!!!! She is sooooo gorgeous in this picture!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
I agree she was the prettiest
This was a great learning experience. Thank you! Times haven’t changed much at all, even after all these decades…

@DOA V 2.0 It does seem like all the dancers at the Cotton Club were all that same color, though.
The brown paper test may not have been used with an actual paper bag, but many places judged you on color. The Cotton Club was infamous for hiring light skin chorus girls only. Many black societies did this as well. It's ugly but our people did and still unconsciously use the "brown paper bag test".

Thanks for this one @ashleysaysso. My mom was marked after Lena Horne. For those who don’t know what that means it’s ole school.
Not carbonated drinks 😂😂😂 I definitely cackled lmao
I can’t stand females like that, that is so damn sad. Freddie looked out for her and helped her career while she couldn’t even give that woman a call on her death bed.
