    I just saved a turtle who was missing a leg on the road a few days ago, and I am so lucky I could keep him.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Does this turtle have an open leg wound or does it just have three legs? I obviously do not know the entire situation here, but turtles are very hardy, and I am sure the turtle would be able to get alone just fine in the wild with three legs. However, if it has recently lost its leg, you are probably helping it by taking it in. Anyway thank you for the comment!

    • @kidsgensheimer1554
      @kidsgensheimer1554 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, It has an open leg wound you can see the bone, it looks like something would just eat or chop it off. We don’t know how he lost his leg but he is doing much better now and we cleaned it and everything.

    I really admire your non minimalist approach to turtle keeping. that's very respectable and very.... refreshing. Sadly I don't see much of that out there. My philosophy is we are at their captors and they are our captives. Being such for our enjoyment solely we owe it to them to insure them the most comfortable environment possible.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brian Bentley I very much love this comment. It is quite sad that turtles almost always seem to be in such small enclosures. I very much like your philosophy. I don’t like to say I have a collection of animals which is what many people would call it. It is more that I take care of animals because they need a home, and I always try to give them the best home I can. I am going to post a video this weekend that I think you will very much like. I set up a much much bigger enclosure for the turtles, and I will be doing more work on it in the future as well. I really think they will thrive in this new tank once I get everything properly setup. Thank you for the comment, and have a great day!

    My dad works for Amazon and found a female one while he was delivering. The food is coming this Friday and we have a big tank and filled it with water. should I take it out for a while on the grass from time to time or can I just leave it in the tank. Also it seems fisty whenever I pick it up and like wants to get away from me probably because it’s not used me and my family tho. If u have any tips for me that would be really helpful and keep up the good work

    I just got a painted turtle, keeping it outside in a plastic bin....
    Any advice ?

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure that it can not get out, and make sure that when it does potentially escape, that it then has another area it can not get out of. In my experience, turtles really like to get out, and they can just disappear if they get out of their outside containers. So my stock tank is on a patio that has a pallet fence around it to ensure the turtles really can not get out. Also, keep the tub out of direct sunlight. Make sure it gets shade for part of the day and sunlight for part of the day. You do not want to overheat the turtle. Finally, add as much filtration as you can. That is really helpful with any turtle setup.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shania Isais I would recommend trying to feed it a commercial turtle pellet so basically what ever turtle food your pet store has because the pellets have a strong smell but depending on how old the turtle is it may not be eating yet. I would recommend letting it go and looking into rescuing a turtle. I did a video all about this subject-

    Hey thank you I fought a little baby painted turtle it's about 2.5-3 inches this was very helpful. Could you make a video showing you tank set up in detail 25ea far as like the wood for the basking area and like the other types of fish that so I'm with turtles suckers and what not and maybe where you got ur rock and other tank stuff also the type of plants and filters .. sorry I just really want to make my baby a proper home so she can have a healthy long life. 🐢

    • @DIYReptiles

      These two videos might help you a little bit:
      th-cam.com/video/yE76-274Q30/w-d-xo.html
      This one is for a different turtle but it is the same concept: th-cam.com/video/lAJ4DqnyQjQ/w-d-xo.html
      Also to answer some of your questions. I would make sure not to use pine wood for the decor or basking spot. The fish that I think would be fine are goldfish, koi, plecos, siamese algae eaters, and minnows. Basically any fish that is too big or to fast for the turtles to kill. I wouldn’t try to keep any plants in with it because it will destroy the plants. I got the rocks from the field behind my house and the stream that is down the road from my house. I got the gravel from a local landscaping company that my dad works at. I am not exactly sure about filtration. Just make sure the water is clear, the filter is disrupting the waters surface, and that you are changing the filter media out when it gets dirty. If you would like to have plants around the tank then you can let plants grow out of a hang on back filter as long as the turtle can’t get to the plants. I hope this was helpful. Have a great day!!

    Do most pet stores sell painted turtles
    Can I keep a painted turtle in a 20 gallon tank
    Is it ok if water is only on like the bottom 8th of the tank
    How often do I feed it
    Are they docile
    Thanks for helping out!

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Twenty One Memes I would say that most pet stores do not sell them. I think that the only pet store I have seen them at is Pet Smart but I do not recommend buying one from there. If you are interested in getting one, I would recommend looking for one that some else isn’t interested in keeping any longer. I have gotten all of my turtles for free off of Craigslist. A twenty gallon is to small for a full grown painted turtle either male or female. Especially if it is only filled the bottoms 8th of the tank. I would say that a completely filled fifty five gallon is the smallest size I would keep a full grown painted turtle either male or female. I am not saying that you have to go and buy a brand new fifty five gallon aquarium because they are really expensive. Again Craigslist or Facebook marketplace would be the best option because if you are patient you can normally find a fifty five gallon tank for quite cheap on these sites. I feed mine floating pellets and I just drop them in the tank. Any turtle will eventually become used to you doing this and will probably wait at the top for the pellets. When it comes to personality, it completely depends on the turtle. Some turtles are nicer than others but there isn’t a whole lot they can do to you so there is no reason to be afraid. I have been bitten by my painted turtle and it really doesn’t hurt. He isn’t mean he just thought my finger was food. Thank you for the comment and I hope this helps! If you have any more questions just ask.

    Feeder gold fish is pretty much the McDonald's of the fish food world or eating at some shady taco stand,lol. I raise guppies and they are healthy. I do mot do well with bugs at all. So as I understand this fish is similar to feeding insects according to nutrition? I also have a mad ammounts of water lettuce is this better for them? Its something that would be in some of their habits?

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mellé wedin I don’t think that Guppies or water Lettuce are bad foods for turtles in anyway. With anything food it should’ve fine as long as you don’t only feed it alone. I think that Guppies and water lettuce only with a turtle pellet would be quite a good diet for turtles. I would think that guppies my even be better than insects as long as the fish are healthy because turtles are more likely to eat fish in the wild. I don’t really know very much about water lettuce but after quickly reading online it seems like it would be fine to feed to turtles. Thank you for the comment! Have a great day!

      Braden L. That is a good question. Yes you do just like you do for fish so you can use a reptile specific dechlorinator or just a normal aquarium dechlorinator but yes that is very important for the health of your animal. Okay so I found an Eastern Painted turtle around April 2019 and it was around as big as a quarter, I was wondering what other way could you tell a female painter from a male other than the front claws? My angel is so small that I really can’t tell. Also how careful should you be handling a turtle with the whole salmonella deal? I sanitize my hands after any contact with him/her just in case.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are going to have to wait a long time before you will be able to tell. Though the ways to tell gender are males have shorter front claws like you said, males have longer tails, and males are smaller when full grown. When it comes to the salmonella just wash your hands like you would with a dog or a cat or a hamster. You would really want to pet and scratch a dog and then eat go and eat food without washing your hands. Don’t be super worried about it but also don’t be gross if that makes sense. To give you a few examples of things that I know of happening without any repercussions I do a lot with turtles so sometimes my hands are in and out of their tanks for a couple hours during water changes and I don’t go and put my fingers in my mouth but I do scratch my face and whatnot. Also once my friend who doesn’t make the best decisions was getting a syphon going by the method of sucking on the end (which I have never done, never plan on doing, and don’t recommend) and his mouth became filled with with the turtle water. He is fine and I am fine. You are probably safe not being overly cautious because more than likely your turtle doesn’t have salmonella. Good luck and thank you for the comment!

      not 100% if this works for painted turtles, but it does work for other such as box turtles. Males will have a concave plasterdon, and females have a flat one. it helps the males during mating season.

    Hi! I recently got a new baby painted turtle. We found him on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere nowhere near water, super dry and hot. Anyway, it was really quick and I got a new turtle with absolutely no research, which I feel so bad about. I really want to make him/her the best tank I can them, right now I have him in a snake tank with a pretty big sized piece of tupperwhere with tap water (with turtle conditioner in it) I feel really bad because I know this is not the right environment for him/her and I really need help. I have a tank, I just don’t know how deep, how shallow to make it. I saw your tank and it’s a lot bigger than mine and deeper. Really hope you see this!

      Hello, first I recommend releasing the turtle in a local body of water. There are so many turtles already in captivity that need homes. If you are interested in a turtle, I recommend doing a large amount of research on lighting, heating, tank size, turtle size, lifespan, diet, filtration, and basking before getting a turtle. Once you know that aquatic turtles generally live for around thirty years and that they are a huge amount (I mean like a very very large amount) of work and commitment, then I recommend looking for a turtle that needs a home. Wild turtles have the wild. There are a ridiculous amount of turtles already in captivity that need homes. I personally have taking in over twenty turtles at this point. These were turtles that needed homes, and people gave them to me free of charge. This is what I recommend.

      I do not think that is needed. I generally do not hear my turtle tanks, so the water may be a little bit colder during the winter months, but not enough to make them go into brumation.

      African dwarf frogs and Painted turtles definitely should not go together. Painted turtles will happily eat frogs. I strongly recommend not getting a painted turtle if the only tank you have has African dwarf frogs in it.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophia Erickson I am sorry to say I am not completely sure. I would try a bunch of different foods like Roman lettuce, worms, mealworms, dubia roaches, pellets, duck weed, and feeder minnow fish. If it still doesn’t eat anything I would just wait because it will eventually become hungry enough to eat. If you got the baby turtle from the wild I would recommend letting it go because it will have an easier time beginning to eat in the wild. Finally if it is not eating and you are worried about it then you my have to take it to a vet. Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

      Little Lamborghini I am sorry to hear this. Ok I would need to know the whole situation to really be able to help you but I will give a few different suggestions. First of all I am not sure how long you have had it but I normally wait like three days or more before trying to feed a turtle when I get it because they need time to adjust to their new environment. If you got it from a pet store go back and ask them what they were feeding it. If you got it from somebody else who you can’t go back and ask then try other foods like
      roman lettuce, collard greens, maybe some fruit just to get it to eat something, Earth worms, minnow fish ( not feeder goldfish), crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, waxworms, or some different types of pellets. If you got it from the wild I would suggest it would be in the best interest of the turtle to let it go and try to find one someone is giving away on Craigslist. Also you may want to try sinking and floating pellets. I hope this helps. I tried to give the best answer on the little amount the situation I know. Thank you for the comment!

    Romaine lettuce isn’t the best for vegetables, it has very low nutritional value. Red lettuce, aquatic plants, or other leafy greens are a lot better for them!

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alli Thank You for the comment! I will feed them red lettuce this summer when I grow it in my garden. I used to get a mix of lettuces but I haven’t in a while because it was a different brand which seemed to go bad much faster than the Romain lettuce. I do need to make the variety of greens and vegetables that I feed my turtles and Iguana bigger. The main thing I feed the turtles is the pellets and the greens are only a treat so they are still getting nutrients. Again thank you for the suggestion and have a great day!

      I hundred percent recommend letting it go. Turtles are tougher than you think, and I personally think it will do fine if you can not let it go exactly in the same place you found it. There are a ridiculous number of turtles in captivity that need homes. I have been given close to twenty turtles now for free! Please do not take one out of the wild that would do perfectly well in its natural habitat.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boogaloo I would recommend getting a twenty gallon tank. A ten gallon would work too, but it would not last as long. I would recommend getting a Zoo Med mini double fixture with a UVB bulb and a heat bulb. For filtration I recommend a Tetra Whisper 20i In-Tank Filter. This all should fit into your price range. You should not need a heater as long as your house temperature is normally around 65-80 degrees. Above all I suggest letting the turtle go. Find a nice water source (lake, pond, or stream) and let the turtle go. I understand wanting to keep it because it is small and your child wants to keep it, but in the long fun it will better for you and the turtle if you let the turtle go. Turtles get very large, live for a very long time (they live longer than any cat or dog), and are quite expensive to keep, but even if those are not problems, there a huge amount of turtles already in captivity that need homes. If you put a post on Craigslist that you would be willing to take in a turtle, I know you will find one because I have been given close to twenty turtles at this point. Better yet you could probably look for and find a turtle with enclosure on Craigslist for much less than 120$.

      I like the way I do things. Also a script makes oral communication unnatural. The best way to communicate is to talk conversationally to make the viewers feel involved in a way. The best way would be to create an outline of the information which I will probably do in the future. Also, I really see no reason for the videos to be that short. I prefer videos around ten to fifteen minutes long.
