Life of the Painted Turtle

I so love baby turtles!! had baby slider a baby painted turtle and alligator snapping turtle 50 yrs ago. I caught a number of baby common snapping turtles in my youth. and kept a couple until they turned vicious typically after their shells reached a couple inches. then I just returned them to where I captured them.

when in HS we went SCUBA diving in a lake that was filled with painted turtles and Blandings turtles. they looked so cool under the water!

I have 3 baby painted turtles, and I'm having a hard time figuring out if they're males or females. :/

You probably won’t be able to tell until they’re a little older but male turtles have longer thicker tails than the females as well as a concave plastron(the underside of the shell).

@boontonwildlife247 thanks. It's funny cause I think the female is the tiny one and the big ones are males. That's what's confusing me! Lol

⁠​⁠@@tzluxlover73the boys are big and the females are small , both will grow to be huge but still the difference in size will still be distinctive. I have two , a boy and girl painted easterns so it made it easier to tell after a year of finding them on a golf course .
by this time your babies should be center palm sized , the boys will cover more of your palm . If by now they’re still center perfect size they are girls . If they almost cover your whole palm ( may even reach your fingers a little ) then they are boys . Boys also appear more husky looking
